EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s leading mobile money platform, has announced a partnership with MultiChoice Zimbabwe to offer customers a convenient and secure way to pay their DStv subscriptions.
This collaboration allows EcoCash users to pay their monthly DStv fees directly from their EcoCash wallet, enabling instant activation of their DStv account.
With this partnership, EcoCash customers can access a wide range of international sports, entertainment, news, and current affairs from the comfort of their homes.
The mobile money firm aims to simplify the payment process, making it easier for customers to enjoy their favourite TV shows and sports.
DStv, offered by MultiChoice, provides exclusive content, including the latest movies and live sports, such as the English Premier League.

EcoCash encourages customers with smartphones to use the EcoCash app for fast and easy payments.

EcoCash Partners With MultiChoice Zimbabwe For Convenient DStv Payments

EcoCash has reduced its US dollar transfer charges following the government’s reduction of the Intermediated Money Transfer Tax (IMTT) to 2%, down from 4% effective from 1 January 2023.
In a notice to its customers, EcoCash said the 2% tax only applies to transactions higher than US$5. It also said all cash-in transactions were free.
EcoCash US dollar transfers are done via the EcoCash US dollar wallet, accessible by dialling *153# on an EcoCash registered Econet line.
The EcoCash wallet allows users to cash in, cash out, send money, receive money, make payments and buy airtime in US dollars. A company spokesperson said:

The beauty about the EcoCash USD wallet is that there is no need to register a new wallet, as all existing registered EcoCash customers have the USD wallet by default on their profile, which is accessible by simply dialling *153#.

Cash-in can be done at Econet Shops, OK Supermarkets, and Steward Bank branches throughout the country, or at over 500 EcoCash branded merchant outlets across the country.
Following the reduction in transfer charges, a registered EcoCash customer will pay a total of US$0.33 (US$0.20 IMT tax, and US$0.13 EcoCash fee) when sending US$10.
Those cashing out US$10 will be charged US$0.17 in transaction charges.
Sending US$50 now attracts a 2% tax of US$1.00 and a US$0.65 transaction charge, bringing the total transfer fees to US$1.65, while those cashing out US$50 will be charged US$0.85.

EcoCash Lowers Its US Dollar Transfer Charges

The number of Zimbabweans with bank accounts has increased by 1.2 million to 3.3 million this year, according to a Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) survey.
In its 2022 report, FinScope also said financial inclusion in the country had generally improved. The FinScope survey read:

About 3,3 million or 46% of Zimbabweans are banked — this represents about 1,2 million adults (who) have been brought into the banking sphere between 2014 and 2022.
Youth (less than 25 years), senior adults (66+ years) and adults residing in rural areas are less likely to use bank services. Compared to 2014 there has been a notable increase in uptake of transactional accounts (either mobile money and or bank accounts) among all the groups, however, adults residing in rural areas and senior adults still lag in having formal accounts in their own name.
Overall, more adults are financially included in 2022 compared 2014, in all areas of access to formal financial products or services.

The FinScope Consumer Survey 2022 is the third such report following previous studies conducted in 2014 and 2011.
It interviewed about 3 000 people.
In August, RBZ deputy governor Jesimen Chikipa said while the number of financially included Zimbabweans had increased, it was still below the 90% target set by the central bank in 2016.
She attributed the rise in financial inclusion to a “robust” mobile money transfer system, although authorities were worried about the low uptake in Matabeleland provinces.
Chipika said the survey revealed that:

i). the most banked provinces were Bulawayo and Harare.
ii). Rural areas were riding on mobile money platforms.
iii). more efforts were still required to improve financial inclusion in Matabeleland North and South provinces.

She said this is likely to be a key target in the second phase of the National Financial Inclusion Strategy, which is underway.
Chipika said improved financial inclusion would be crucial in ironing out inequities between rural and urban populations in the country, which she traced back to colonial times.
However, the RBZ’s <a href="https://www.rbz.co.zw/index.php/publications-notices/publications/quarterly-reports-mfis/37-quarterly-industry-report/1158-quarterly-microfinance-report-june-2022">Quarterly Microfinance Report for Q2, 2022</a> revealed a decline in active bank accounts in Zimbabwe.

The report notes that as of March 2021, the total number of Bank Accounts was 9.06 million while the number of low-cost accounts was 5.82 million.
June 2021, bank accounts fell to 7.17 million; low-cost accounts dropped to 4.41 million.
September 2021, bank accounts further dropped to 6.69 million; low-cost accounts went up to 4.45 million.
December 2021, bank accounts went up to 8.17 million; low-cost accounts went up to 4.78 million. 
March 2022, bank accounts dropped to 7.76 million; low-cost accounts went up to 4.83 million.

Number Of Zimbabweans With Bank Accounts Increased To 3.3 Million In 2022

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> has authorised <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/EcoCash">Ecocash</a>, Zimbabwe’s largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service, to exempt <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sirizani_Butau?utm_source=PindulaArticle&amp;utm_campaign=PindulaArticle">Mr Sirizani Butau</a> from Ecocash limits till the end of March next year.
<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/12/25/man-burnt-while-retrieving-victims-of-harare-mutare-highway-accident/">Mr Butau was burnt while trying to rescue people from a Beta bus</a> that was in flames after a head-on collision with a fuel tanker about 20 km outside Mutare on Christmas Eve.
He has been receiving donations from well-wishers and his Ecocash account had reached the limits set by the central bank.
Ecocash then approached RBZ seeking permission to exempt Butai from the limits. Pindula News spoke to Fungai Mandiveyi, EcoCash Holdings Zimbabwe Spokesperson who confirmed the development. Mandiveyi told this reporter:

RBZ Authorises Ecocash To Exempt Sirizani Butau From Limits Till End Of March

Dominant mobile money service provider, EcoCash, has announced an upward review in transactional charges starting next month after obtaining the green light from regulatory authorities.
The company, which last reviewed its charges at the beginning of the year in January, said it will increase its charges effective September 19, 2021.

There was no immediate comment from the company on the price adjustment. The increase comes at a time the prices of goods and services in the country have been escalating despite the stability in the official foreign currency exchange rate since the beginning of the year.
The EcoCash tariff schedule made no reference to the ZW$5 000 daily transaction limit imposed on mobile money transactions in May 2020.
Although the monetary authorities last year promised to review the EcoCash weekly limit of ZW$35 000 “continuously, in line with the requirements and convenience of the transacting public”, there has so far not been any changes made to the transaction limits.

Ecocash Reviews Transaction Charges Effective 21 September

EcoCash, Zimbabwe’s largest mobile money platform has warned members of the public against Ponzi schemes that are in the market.
The Cassava Smartech subsidiary speaks amid reports that some founders of these schemes have disappeared with huge volumes of participants’ money. Reads the alert:

Fraudulent Investment Schemes 
Beware of FAKE investment schemes operating in the market. Some of them are offering unbelievable returns. 
All deposit-taking institutions and investment schemes must be licensed by regulatory authorities and have an obligation to display their licenses to the public. Make sure to verify and confirm that you are dealing with a licensed institution before parting with your HARD EARNED money.</blockquote>
Earlier this year, national police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the police in conjunction with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ), is conducting an operation to apprehend institutions behind some Pyramid and Ponzi schemes in violation of the country’s banking regulations.
The RBZ said all institutions offering financial services must be issued with licences before operations commence adding that entities involved in Ponzi and Pyramid schemes were carrying out banking activities in breach of the Banking Act (Chapter 24:20) and Section 5 of the Banking Act.

Beware Of FAKE Investment Schemes - Ecocash

Ecocash has reiterated that its customers can reverse transactions and reset their Ecocash pins without visiting the mobile money operator’s physical offices.
Posting on its social media pages, Ecocash Zimbabwe said:
<blockquote>Ever blocked your EcoCash Pin or sent money to the wrong number? You don’t need to visit a physical shop to fix any of these problems. Simply dial *150# and access the EcoCash Self Help services such as PIN resets, Transaction reversals and so much more.</blockquote>
This is a relief to customers especially when Ecocash Agents who used to assist customers are no longer available after the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe ordered that they all be blocked.
Customers were left with the option of visiting physical shops or call the customer care service agents, who take ages to respond, which is inconvenient.

TIPS: Reverse Ecocash Transactions, Reset Blocked Pin

ECOCASH, the largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service in the country has removed transfer fees for COVID-19 relief cash from the government and Non-Governmental Organisations.

<blockquote>As Zimbabwe and the rest of the world battle the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, EcoCash has moved to remove all processing fees for cash transfers designated as COVID-19 relief, to enable the Government, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO)s and any other relief organizations to freely give the support to vulnerable groups and communities at no extra cost for the transfers.
The CEO of Cassava Smartech Zimbabwe, the holding company of EcoCash, Mr Eddie Chibi, said the goal of the company was to use their digital solutions to address the current epidemic.
“We are a digital capability company and our goal is to create as many digital solutions as possible to address the current COVID-19 crisis so that lives are saved, first and foremost,” said Mr Chibi.
“The wide distribution of some of our products and services means that we can use our platform and smart data network to reach even the most vulnerable in our country, and create services that bring convenience to millions of citizens.”</blockquote>
<blockquote>Mr Chibi said his company was currently working with the government and development agencies to avail their platform and digital services network to deliver relief where its needed most “as quickly as possible”.
Mobile money and digital electronic transfers become a vital mechanism through which help can be extended to vulnerable groups in times of crisis, speedily and in a convenient and safe manner.
The EcoCash platform has over 11 million customers registered in Zimbabwe and accounts for the bulk of transaction volumes processed in Zimbabwe. It has over 200 000 outlets, accounting for the country’s largest distribution network of agents, merchants and partners for the payments of good and services.
During the COVID-19 epidemic, the ability for people to send money and pay merchants (shops, pharmacies, hospitals, and many others) through their mobile phones minimizes the need for physical contact, and therefore lowers the risk for potential transmission of the virus between individuals.
Zimbabwe is among the countries with the highest level of digital financial inclusion in Africa.
EcoCash launched proximity payments two years ago, a proposition that allows shop till operators to enter a customer’s number on a point of sale (POS) machine and the customer receives a push message at ‘far proximity’ confirming the payment on their mobile phone. EcoCash is currently working with supermarkets to increase the adoption of proximity payments, according to its CEO Ms Natalie Jabangwe.  
Ms Javangwe said: “Customers should be able to order over the phone or online and make a proximity payment from the comfort of their home without the need to travel to the shop. Our partnership with Vaya makes goods delivery safe and convenient”.
She said so far Food World and Spar shops were piloting the proximity payments at scale, before a full telesales and proximity scale-up operation is launched across the country with other retailers.

FULL TEXT: EcoCash Removes Transfer Fees For Covid-19 Relief Cash From Govt & NGOs

A Bulawayo man, Bruce Chafa has appeared before the courts facing fraud charges after he allegedly defrauded Reekays Supermarkets of $20 000 by faking Ecocash payment messages on separate occasions.
Bulawayo magistrate, Ms Nomasiko Ndlovu did not ask the accused to plead to fraud and then remanded him in custody to January 2, 2020.
Chafa is said to have committed the alleged crime between August and September this year. He is said to have approached the employees at the supermarket with fake EcoCash messages purporting to have paid for some groceries and the employees allowed him to take the groceries.
The matter reportedly came to light in September when the supermarket conducted an audit which revealed a mismatch between Ecocash transactions and those recorded manually in the books.
The company reported the matter to the police who conducted investigations leading to the arrest of the accused.

Man In Court Over Fake $20K Ecocash Payments

EcoCash Chief Executive Officer Eddie Chibi has said that transactions on the Ecocash platform were now going through normally adding that they were working on clearing a backlog of transactions.
His remarks come after the largest mobile phone-based money transfer, financing and microfinancing service in the country embarked on a scheduled system upgrade which unexpectedly resulted in system glitches.
The new system came without some functions, was lethargic whilst in worst scenarios, customers’ money would be consumed with transactions not reflecting whether they were successful or not.
Customers bombarded Ecocash with complaints on various platforms including its social media pages to which the company responded saying that they were working on rectifying the issues. Techzim reports that over the last few hours some users who had their EcoCash accounts blocked due to faults were now regaining access to their accounts.
Speaking to the publication, Chibi said:
<blockquote>I’m pleased to say that transactions on our new EcoCash platform are now going through normally.
We are however currently seized with clearing a backlog of transactions particularly those arising from third-party integrations, and continue to ask for our customers’ patience as we work to clear this last hurdle.</blockquote>
The Ecocash “web” touches almost every sector of the Zimbabwean economy and a minor glitch has the potential to bring the whole country to halt.
