On Wednesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) released road traffic accident statistics for the 2024 Easter Holiday.
Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, ZRP Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations), stated that 286 road traffic accidents occurred in 2024—a slight decrease from the 288 incidents in 2023.
Fatal road accidents increased to 26 during the 2024 Easter Holiday, up from 16 in the previous year.
During the 2024 Easter holidays, 27 people lost their lives in road accidents, compared to 29 fatalities in 2023.
This year, 159 people were injured, as opposed to 145 injuries in 2023. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

A comprehensive analysis by the Police has revealed that most accidents recorded during the Easter Holiday are attributed to speeding, inattention, misjudgment, overtaking error, and failure to observe road rules and regulations by drivers.
The Police did not record major fatal road accidents during this year’s Easter holiday as most fatal road accidents involved private motor vehicles and in some instances pedestrians were victims.
In one of the fatal road traffic accidents recorded on 30th March 2024 along Percy Iboston Road near rail crossing, Cowdray Park, Bulawayo a yet-to-be-identified man was killed after being hit by a Honda Fit vehicle.
In another fatal road traffic accident, a yet-to-be-identified woman was hit by a Nissan NV 350 vehicle whilst crossing Seke Road near Delport Road on 29th March 2024 at around 1230 hours.
Meanwhile, a serious road traffic accident was recorded on 29th March 2024 at the 302-kilometre peg along Harare-Chirundu Road where 14 people were injured when an Andile Coaches bus carrying 19 passengers veered off the road, overturned before landing on its roof.
In, another serious road traffic accident which was recorded on Easter Monday 1st April 2024 at about 0220 hours at the 119-kilometre peg along Mutare-Masvingo Road, 62 people were injured when a Passion Link Coaches bus carrying 72 congregates veered off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its roof.
There is a need for motorists and stakeholders to have a total change of mindset when it comes to road safety during holidays.
The Police implores drivers to avoid speeding in situations which are clearly not safe to do so and overtaking when road conditions are not favourable to them.

Accidents And Deaths Decrease During 2024 Easter Holiday Compared To 2023

<h2>Full statement by the Commissioner-General of Police Tandabantu Godwin Matanga on the 2024 Easter Holiday:</h2>
<blockquote>
As the country braces for the 2024 Easter Holiday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police takes this opportunity to assure Zimbabweans and visitors that Police deployments have been enhanced to curb crime and road traffic accidents.
My office has implored Police Commanders across the country to take decisive action against illegal pirate taxis or mushikashika and buses which are not licenced or authorised to carry passengers from one point to another.
Therefore, no pirate taxis or buses with no permits will be allowed to pass through Police checkpoints and roadblocks.
The public service vehicles’ speed limiting technology which is at Harare Central will be effectively monitored to account for all speeding bus drivers who are openly exceeding the stipulated speed limits in line with Statutory Instrument 118/2023.
May I take this opportunity to urge other bus operators who are yet to join or implement the speed limit mechanism to do so for the effective maintenance of law and order in the country and the safety of travellers?
Police will impound all unroadworthy vehicles and arrest any driver found to be driving under the influence of alcohol.
As pilgrimages and church leaders gather at various centres throughout the country to commemorate the Easter Holiday.
I discourage them from night travelling to minimize road traffic accidents. Church leaders should ensure that the form of transport used by congregates is suitable and secure without compromising road safety.
As school children undertake various social activities during this holiday, parents should guide and properly monitor them to curb cases of drug and substance abuse.
Police officers will patrol both residential, industrial and shopping centres to ensure drug peddlers are brought to book.
My office has also directed Officers Commanding Police Provinces to ensure that liquor outlets fully comply with the provisions of the Liquor Act Chapter 14:12.
In this view, all unlicensed liquor outlets and shebeens will be closed while the operators will be arrested for the law to take its course.
In order to minimise chances of robbery cases, the public is again advised not to carry or keep large sums of money at home or business premises.
In fact, business people or families should only keep small amounts for specific transactions and bank the rest with financial institutions.
Companies are reminded not to share information on financial transactions or status with each and every employee. This will assist to curtail the leakage of information to criminals.
Above all, the motoring public is urged to plan journeys and assist in the maintenance of law and order in the country by complying with all road rules and regulations.
Drivers should cooperate with Police Officers at Police checkpoints and patrols to promote road safety for the public.
My office will also take stern action on corrupt elements on the country’s roads as reiterated by the Honourable Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage on the 27th March 2024.
I have directed Police Commanders to effect arrests on those who offer and receive bribes on the roads and in the process put the safety of passengers at risk.

Statement By The Commissioner-General Of Police On The 2024 Easter Holiday

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has revealed the identities of five (5) of out the six (6) victims of a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 5-kilometre peg along Mvuma – Gweru Road on the 9th of April 2023.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims were positively identified by their next of kin. The names of the deceased are as follows:

<li>Nompumelelo Dube, a female infant aged 1 year of Cowdray Park, Bulawayo,</li>
<li>Fisani Gumbo (31) a female adult of Cowdray Park Bulawayo,</li>
<li>Dinha Mabhena (45) a female adult of Pumula South Bulawayo,</li>
<li>Kudzai Mbirimi (56) a female adult of Emganwini, Bulawayo,</li>
<li>Thembeletu Nkomo a male adult of Nkulumane 5, Bulawayo.</li>
</ol>
The accident at around 11 PM when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter with 24 passengers on board side swiped with a UD truck carrying 31 passengers.
Police said the truck driver did not stop after the accident and was involved in another accident at the 192-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road.
The truck veered off the road resulting in the injury of three passengers aboard the truck.

Six Easter Holiday Crash Victims Named

The number of people killed in road traffic accidents during the 2023 Easter Holiday, that is, from 07 to 10 April, was low compared to the 2022 Easter Holiday.
On Tuesday, 11 April, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi released the 2023 Easter Holiday road traffic accident statistics.
The statistics showed that the total number of road traffic accidents rose to 288 in 2023 from 264 in 2022.
The total number of fatal road accidents fell to 16 during the 2023 Easter Holiday compared to 32 such accidents recorded during the 2022 Easter Holiday.
The number of people killed this year also fell to 30, from 73 recorded during the 2022 Easter Holiday.
The number of injured people also declined from 202 to 153. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

It is disturbing to note that some of the accidents recorded during the period are attributed to human error, which includes speeding, inattention, misjudgment, and failure to observe road rules and regulations, by drivers.
Most fatal road traffic accidents recorded occurred during the night when travellers were moving in numbers with vehicles overloaded, mixing goods and passengers, in the process ignoring safety measures.
On 7th April 2023 at around 0600 hours, ten people were killed, while 31 others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 192 kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Highway when a Toyota Caravan kombi collided with a minibus.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 09th April 2023, at around 2300 hours at the five kilometre peg along Mvuma -Gweru Road, six people died while five others were injured when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter with 24 passengers on board side swiped with a UD truck carrying 31 passengers.
The truck driver did not stop after the accident and was involved in another accident at the 192-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road where the truck veered off the road resulting in the injury of three passengers who were in the truck.
Meanwhile, two people died while two others were injured when a Honda Fit vehicle with four occupants on board veered off the road and landed beneath the bridge at the 213-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on 9th April 2023 at around 2300 hours.
As the country prepares to commemorate Independence Day on 18th April 2023, the Zimbabwe Republic Police implores all motorists to be responsible on the roads and lead by example when it comes to road safety.
Let us all play our part to make roads safe and not death traps, above all drivers, should comply with all road rules and regulations in order to safeguard lives.

30 People Killed In Accidents Over The 2023 Easter Holiday

Police have intensified patrols countrywide to curb the violation of traffic rules and regulations and curb criminal activities during the Easter Holiday.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said the police will be out in full force to combat criminal activities, especially those that affect the economic and social well-being of the country. He said:

As the nation commemorates the Easter Holiday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has intensified its operations against all forms of road traffic breaches and criminal activities, especially those that affect the economic and social well-being of the country, such as drug and substance abuse, murder, robbery and rape.
Records have shown that speeding, human error, misjudgment, overloading and defective motor vehicles contribute to accidents.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police, therefore, urges drivers to be considerate on the roads and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
Reckless driving conduct especially overtaking in situations that are not safe should be avoided.
Motorists are implored not to exceed the loading capacity of vehicles when carrying goods and passengers.
Above all, operators of passenger public service vehicles are advised to adhere to the dictates of their route permits and timetables and avoid being dragged into dangerous and reckless road races for passengers.

Asst Comm Nyathi also urged members of the public to avoid boarding Mshikashika or unregistered vehicles and instead, use public transport. He said:

Police would be checking for various traffic violations, stolen motor vehicles, smuggling of minerals, criminal movements, cattle rustlers and drug traffickers on all major highways and roads in the country.
Police will impound all defective or un-roadworthy vehicles in order to safeguard lives.
Members of the public are urged to avoid boarding Mshikashika or unregistered vehicles as they risk being mugged.
Stakeholders such as the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and Vehicle Examination Department will be working closely with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to ensure that the holidays are accident- free through awareness campaigns and blitz on errant motorists.
Let us all remember that road safety is a collective responsibility. Criminal elements often take advantage of holidays to intensify their criminal enterprises such as committing unlawful entry, theft and robbery.

This year, Good Friday falls on 7 April, Easter Sunday, is on 09 April, and Easter Monday (a continuation of the Easter celebration, for some Christian denominations), is on 10 April 2023.
