A kombi driver, who was allegedly involved in the Dzivaresekwa accident that killed eight people, has been remanded in custody by Mbare magistrate Batsirai Madzingira after the State opposed bail.
The driver, Gaylord Hunda (27), is facing charges of culpable homicide and is being represented by Stanley Matandadzi.
Hunda is expected to return to court on Tuesday for a ruling on his bail application.
The State alleges that on March 19, 2024, along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway, Hunda was driving a Toyota Hiace omnibus en route to the city centre.
Hunda allegedly failed to yield to oncoming traffic from the right at an intersection on the highway.
In an attempt to avoid an accident, Hunda swerved to the left side of the road, where he collided with a truck that was parked on the roadside.
He also allegedly struck a person who was standing near the road.
The kombi Hunda was driving was subsequently hit by another truck coming from the right side, resulting in the deaths of eight people.

Dzivarasekwa Accident Kombi Driver Faces Culpable Homicide Charges

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared the Dzivarasekwa accident a National Disaster. Eight people were killed and eleven others were injured when a kombi, driven by an unlicensed driver, collided with a haulage truck and a UD truck.
The accident happened at the intersection of Bulawayo Road and Dzivarasekwa Road on 19 March 2025, around 5:30 AM.
In a statement issued on Thursday, 20 March, Mnangagwa announced that the victims of the accident would receive state-assisted funerals. He said:

Government has declared this horrendous accident a National Disaster and will offer state assistance to the victims. 
I express my heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families and relatives who have lost their loved ones, and I pray for a speedy recovery for all those injured and hospitalised.

Mnangagwa urged all public transport operators and motorists to remain cautious at all times, especially when approaching intersections. He said:

I implore the commuting public and transport operators to avoid using intersections and other dangerous spots along the roads as pick-up and drop-off points.
I also appeal to all motorists to avoid reckless driving and to exercise extreme caution for the safety of all road users.

As of Thursday, seven of the eight victims had been identified by their families. One of the victims, an adult male, had not been identified. His body is at Sally Mugabe Mortuary, waiting for a post-mortem.

Mnangagwa Declares Dzivarasekwa Accident A National Disaster

The death toll from the Dzivarasekwa accident has increased to eight after one of the injured victims died from their injuries.
The crash, involving a Toyota Hiace kombi, a haulage truck, and a Nissan UD truck, occurred at the intersection of Bulawayo Road and Dzivarasekwa Road on 19 March 2025, around 5:30 AM.
Earlier, police had reported seven deaths and eight injuries. However, on Thursday, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the death toll had risen to eight, with eleven people now reported injured.
Police have released the names of seven of the eight victims, who have been identified by their families. They are:

<li>Blessing Banda, a male of number 1143/B, Gunyava Sreet Dzivarasekwa 3, Harare,</li>
<li>Takudzwa Musekiwa, a male adult of number 1034, Dzivarasekwa 3, Harare.</li>

Nyathi said that one of the victims, an adult male, has not been identified yet. His body is at Sally Mugabe Mortuary, waiting for a post-mortem.
The 11 injured victims are being treated at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Added Nyathi:

Dzivarasekwa Accident Death Toll Rises To Eight

The driver of the kombi involved in the March 19 accident in Dzivarasekwa, Harare, lacked the necessary qualifications to operate a passenger vehicle. The accident left seven people dead and eight others injured.
In his condolence message, Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona (MP) also revealed that the kombi was neither roadworthy nor authorised to carry passengers. He said:

The road traffic crash is yet another clarion call to all transport operators, motorists, and members of the public to adhere to road traffic rules and exercise caution on the road.
It is concerning to note that the commuter omnibus was not certified to be roadworthy and not authorized to carry passengers and the driver did not have the requisite competences to drive a passenger service vehicle.
The failure by the commuter omnibus driver to give way was reckless and thus a blatant violation of our road traffic rules and regulations.

Mhona warned transport operators, motorists, and the public that the Ministry will take stern measures to ensure the safety and security of commuters.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the accident occurred at the intersection of Bulawayo Road and the Dzivarasekwa turn-off, near Thuli Service Station.
The crash involved a Toyota Hiace kombi, a haulage truck, and a UD 70 truck.
It is alleged that the kombi driver failed to yield at the traffic light-controlled junction, resulting in the accident.
