The city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second-largest city, has extended water rationing by an additional 48 hours, bringing the total rationing time to 120 hours. Authorities say this decision was made due to a significant drop in water levels in the key reservoir, which currently stands at only 4% of the desired level.
The shortage of rainfall has been attributed to the El Niño weather pattern, a natural climate phenomenon that causes changes in ocean temperatures and atmospheric conditions. This particular El Niño is predicted to be historically strong and among the most intense since 1950, according to the US Climate Prediction Center. It has been associated with extreme weather events around the world, including storms, droughts, and wildfires.
The water crisis in Bulawayo is not a new problem. The city has been grappling with water shortages for many years due to a combination of factors, including rapid population growth, ageing infrastructure, and limited water resources. The situation has been exacerbated by climate change and the unpredictability of rainfall patterns.
To address the long-term water shortage, the Gwayi-Shangani Dam was proposed in 1912 as part of the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project (MZWP). However, due to a lack of political will and insufficient funding, the dam has yet to be completed. The project was recently awarded to the China International Water and Electric Corporation. 
Once finished, the Gwayi-Shangani Dam will be the third-largest inland water body in Zimbabwe, following Tokwe-Mukosi and Lake Mutirikwi. The dam is located in Region Four, which experiences low rainfall and high temperatures. The government has invested over US$122 million in the project. In 2012, the government took over the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Project (MZWP) from the Matabeleland Zambezi Water Trust, led by the late Dumiso Dabengwa. The government had promised to accelerate the project’s completion but had limited success.

Bulawayo City Has Extended Rationing Water To 120 Hours

Zodwa, the widow of the late liberation stalwart and national hero <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dumiso_Dabengwa/">Dumiso Dabengwa</a>, has died. According to a family spokesperson, Sijabuliso Dabengwa, Zodwa died in the early hours of Thursday morning in the United Kingdom due to suspected COVID-19 complications. He said:

We have not started arrangements for the funeral yet, we will see from Monday. She died in the United Kingdom from suspected COVID-19 complications. The UK closes offices during weekends.
She had an operation long back in South Africa. After her husband died, she was invited by her children to the United Kingdom and went to stay there in 2019. She could not come back since then after she was affected by COVID-19 regulations until she died on Thursday.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been made as she died in a foreign country where offices are closed during the weekend.
Dumiso, Zodwa’s husband, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2019/05/23/zimbabweans-react-liberation-war-hero-dumiso-dabengwa-dies/">passed away in 2019</a> at the age of 79 while en route to Zimbabwe from India, where he had gone for medical treatment. He died in Kenya, and upon his passing, he was declared a national hero. He was buried at his rural home in Ntabazinduna, which is located in the Matabeleland North province of Zimbabwe.

Dumiso Dabengwa's Widow, Zodwa, Dies In UK From Suspected COVID-19

Opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> interim president, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Nelson_Chamisa">Nelson Chamisa</a>, has said he was endorsed by many founding leaders of Zimbabwe, the living and the departed to be the president of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
Chamisa, a former Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services (ICTPCS), made the remarks while addressing CCC supporters at a rally held on Sunday at Mkoba, Gweru. He said:

(<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dumiso_Dabengwa">Dumiso) Dabengwa</a> endorsed me, Save (<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Morgan_Tsvangirai">Morgan Tsvangirai</a>) endorsed me, (former President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robert_Mugabe">Robert) Mugabe</a> endorsed me. Until the anointed one is on the throne, Zimbabwe will not have peace, the economy won’t stabilise.

He said the CCC is the only hope and solution to the country’s economic, humanitarian and political crises.
CCC was formed in 2022 after MDC-T leader, Senator <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Douglas_Mwonzora">Douglas Mwonzora</a> claimed ownership of the MDC Alliance, a name that was also being used by the party that was being led by Chamisa. 
Chamisa said if he is elected president in 2023, he and the CCC government will restore the dignity of all civil servants including teachers, nurses, doctors, and other government workers.  
His remarks come as government workers have periodically clashed with authorities in the past two years over poor working conditions and paltry salaries. 
In the midst of ululations and whistles from supporters, Chamisa said he will defeat President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> and force him to go into retirement. He added:

If anyone wins, we will congratulate him, but there is no party in Zimbabwe that can beat us. Victory is certain.
</blockquote>
He also denounced violence adding that his party’s main weapon was the mind. 
Chamisa said there will be no rigging of elections “this time” as he has informers at several government institutions including the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electoral_Commission">Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC)</a> which has often been accused of conniving with the ruling ZANU PF to manipulate election outcomes. 
Chamisa also said ZANU PF does not own the country adding that fighting in the liberation struggle does not make the country its property. He added that every citizen contributed to the independence of Zimbabwe in one way or the other.

ZAPU’s elective congress commences this Thursday in Bulawayo, with the main events of the congress running from 28 to 30 October.
The opposition party’s congress was postponed several times last year and this year due to the COVID-19 lockdown regulations.
ZAPU is set to elect its new president to replace the late former intelligence supremo and party president, Dumiso Dabengwa, who died in May 2019.
Party acting president Isaac Mabuka yesterday told Southern Eye that they were finalising the accreditation of members, with 2 000 delegates expected at the congress. Said Mabuka:

All is in order, and we will start with the accreditation of our members tomorrow (today), then on the second day, we will hold a closed-door meeting.
We expect about 2 000 delegates at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre for the congress.

Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of the late nationalist and Vice-President Joshua Nkomo, is leading in the nominations for the party presidency after bagging nine out of 10 provinces.
Other presidential candidates include secretary-general Strike Mkandla, Mark Mbayiwa, ZAPU former Matabeleland South chairperson Matthew Sibanda, Bernard Magugu and Sithembiso Mpofu, who is based in the United Kingdom.

ZAPU Elective Congress Gets Underway

The late former ZIPRA supremo and national hero, Dumiso Dabengwa, never forgave ZANU for the torture of Lookout Masuku, another liberation war stalwart, who died in detention on allegedly trumped-up charges for plotting to overthrow the government.
This was said by ZAPU treasurer-general Mark Mbayiwa at Dabengwa’s memorial service held on Sunday in Emanxeleni, Ntabazinduna where the late national hero’s family, ZAPU members, gathered to commemorate his death and celebrate his life.
Dabengwa died on 23 May 2019.
Dabengwa was arrested together with Masuku on allegations of plotting a coup against then Prime Minister Robert Mugabe’s government in 1982.
Although the High Court cleared them of the allegations, the ZANU government arrested them as soon as they stepped outside the court and detained them illegally.
Mbayiwa told the gathering that Dabengwa refused to be buried at Heroes Acre as he was angry at ZANU for the injustices they committed including his torture with his friend, Masuku. He said:
<blockquote>I am proud to speak of Dabengwa who I knew from childhood. Dabengwa saw everything that happened in the country.
He would say when he died he wanted to be buried next to his parents and relatives, not the thugs who have destroyed this country.
It’s not a secret that Zanu-PF has destroyed this country and we are struggling because of that.
Dabengwa refused to go to Heroes acre because of the pain that he experienced in his life.
That pain came from the death of his friend, Lookout Masuku with who he was incarcerated.
It’s unfortunate that Masuku died before he could be released by his tormentors and because of that Dabengwa was very angry.</blockquote>

‘Dabengwa Never Forgave ZANU Over Lookout Masuku Torture And Death’

Mmusi Maimane, the former leader of the Democratic Alliance, an opposition party in South Africa has said the recent arrest of government critics in Zimbabwe reminds of the late Dumiso Dabengwa and General Lookout Masuku whom he said were wrongfully detained in the early 1980s by the Zanu PF regime.
He speaks when a number of government critics including journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition leader Jacob Ngarivhume were arrested and detained for encouraging the public to participate in anti-government protests. Maimane added:
<blockquote>We have seen this tactic. To report on corruption, on upcoming protests, to personally express disgust at corruption, none of these are acts of treason in a free country.</blockquote>
He urged the president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa who is also the current chair of the African Union to do more to address the Zimbabwe governance and human rights crisis. Maimane said:
<blockquote>… we truly need a better action from you (Ramaphosa) than the envoy which was not even afforded a chance to speak to other critical role players from the opposition and civil society. As SA we carry the cost.</blockquote>
Opposition MDC Alliance and some members of the diplomatic call believe that the state is sponsoring the abuse of human rights in the country.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwean authorities deny allegations of human rights violations saying they are being created by the country’s enemies to damage its image.

"Detentions Remind Of Dabengwa, Masuku Whom ZANU PF Wrongfully Arrested" - Maimane

Opposition ZAPU has recalled its Bulawayo provincial executive amid reports that the party once led by the late former Vice President Joshua Nkomo is submerged under a fierce intraparty conflict.
This comes ahead of the party’s elective congress scheduled for the October to replace its departed liberation war stalwart Dumiso Dabengwa, who passed on in May 2019.
Notice of recall addressed to Twala and copied to Mbayiwa and Muhlwa suggested that the duo was not performing its duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. The notice read:
<blockquote>The reasons for relieving you of your duties are non-performance, which has resulted in our province being the worst performing nationally.
When we raised the issue of the state of our province, you clearly indicated that you were financially incapacitated to act and would only act when the party availed the resources. Cdes, the range of ICT tools available today have the capacity to bring you to the people.</blockquote>
The notice reminded that grassroots were “the most important” thing in the political field without which the party would cease to exist.
Meanwhile, the two dismissed the recalls saying those who purportedly recalled them did not follow due process.

ZAPU INFIGHTING: Bulawayo Provincial Executive Recalled Ahead Of Congress

The Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation has claimed that the late former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe clashed with the then Minister of Home Affairs, Dumiso Dabengwa over the arrest of Agriculture Minister Kumbirai Kangai.
Kangai was being accused of abusing US$4,6 million grain fund causing severe famine in the country and Dabengwa authorised his arrest.
The Foundation reports that Kangai’s wife approached Dabengwa in a bid to convince him to release her husband but Dabengwa refused to release him saying only courts would exonerate him.
In a recent social media post, DDF said Mrs Kangai then called Mugabe indicating that Dabengwa had refused to release her “innocent” husband. The DDF added:
<blockquote>Mugabe did call Dabengwa to explain that Kangai’s arrest is an embarrassment to the government and that the police must release him.
He argued that a minister cannot spend a night in holding cells.
He also told Dabengwa that Kangai’s wife called, worried.
Dabengwa refused. He insisted that the bigger embarrassment is to have a corrupt cabinet minister.</blockquote>
DDF added that Dabengwa reiterated that none is above the law and spent the night in holding cells and went to court the following day.
The DDF also alleges that Dabengwa insisted that the late vice president Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo was against corruption so he would not betray Nkomo’s legacy.

Mugabe, Dabengwa Clashed Over The Arrest Of Kangai  - DDF

The city of Bulawayo in the recent roads renaming exercise honoured <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chimurenga">2nd Chimurenga</a> known friends Dumiso Dabengwa and Lookout Masuku by naming 2 roads after the late heroes, The Chronicle reports.
According to the publication:
<blockquote>Basch Street is now Dumiso Dabengwa Road, Fort Street has been renamed Lookout Masuku Street.</blockquote>

BCC Honors Friends Lookout Masuku And Dumiso Dabengwa By Naming Roads After Them

The resident of Bulawayo have questioned the leaving out of iconic figures like the late <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dumiso_Dabengwa">Dumiso Dabengwa</a> and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thenjiwe_Lesabe">Thenjiwe Lesabe</a> from the street naming done earlier this week.
In an interview with the Chronicle, historian, Pathisa Nyathi said that the government should have consulted with the people first before renaming streets.
Said Nyathi:
<blockquote>The name that keeps popping up is that of Dabengwa. They are saying: ‘ungaphi uDumiso Dabengwa?’ Some are also saying: ‘ungaphi u Thenjiwe Lesabe?</blockquote>
Government renamed several roads and buildings after Zimbabwe liberation war fighters and other iconic figures in Zimbabwe and Russian history. The government has been criticised for naming a total of 8 roads after the current president Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

'Ungaphi uDumiso Dabengwa? Ungaphi uThenjiwe Lesabe?' Bulawayo Residents Question Street Naming

Team Pachedu, an opposition political activism online group has brought to remembrance the tactics that the state uses to bring blame onto its opponents. The group posted on Twitter some events that triggered Gukurahundi saying:
<blockquote>In 1982, months before Gukurahundi, arms caches were discovered on ZAPU-linked Ascot Farm. Mnangagwa told a press conference that a plot to overthrow the GVT by ZAPU had been uncovered. Dabengwa was arrested, the GVT took over ZAPU assets and then a genocide followed.</blockquote>
The above remarks got some observers thinking that the police helmets which were <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/10/13/picture-police-find-helmets-stashed-in-basement-office-in-harare/">reportedly discovered in a basement office at Robinson House, Harare</a> are a mere smokescreen by the government to justify its intended crackdown on the opposition MDC.
The discovery of the helmets comes when the MDC has announced intentions to embark on nationwide demonstrations over the deteriorating state of affairs.

Former South African president Thabo Mbeki is seen addressing a congregation he tells he has never met a single Zimbabwean who wanted Mugabe deposed. Referring to the November 2017 that saw Mugabe being toppled from power by his lieutenants, Mbeki says the fact that he doesn’t know anyone who wanted Mugabe deposed shows the matter was complicated.

WATCH: Nobody Wanted To See Mugabe Deposed - Mbeki

Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), an opposition and Zimbabwean socialist political party has resolved to retire all veteran leaders from the leadership as part of the party embarks on renewal and rebranding exercise.
ZAPU’s intended rebranding exercise comes after the party has for the past decade been performing dismally in local elections.
Speaking to the Southern Eye last week, the party’s southern region spokesperson, Patrick Ndlovu confirmed the development. Ndlovu said that the rebranding exercise was being spearheaded by the party’s acting president, Isaac Mabuka. Ndlovu said:
<blockquote>His (Mabuka) mandate is to organise congress and to carry out the renewal and rebranding resolution of our national people’s council (NPC).
Party members, especially the younger members, felt that the average age of our leadership was too high. New blood is needed at the top to bring in new ideas. 
The current scenario of having them as deputies was not bearing fruit as the blending was felt to be cosmetic rather than practical, hence the party needed new blood at the top.</blockquote>
Mabuka was endorsed as acting president until the party’s 2020 congress following the death of party president, Dumiso Dabengwa in May.

ZAPU Resolves To Retire All Veteran Leaders

ZAPU officials are said to be on the run after they were allegedly stalked by suspected State security agents since the death of party president Dumiso Dabengwa.
The director of the Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation, Mthulisi Hanana has reportedly skipped the border after he was followed for several days soon after Dabengwa’s burial.
Hanana made some stinging remarks at Dabengwa’s funeral in which he berated the country’s military for shooting at armed civilians. He said then:
<blockquote>Tell Father Zimbabwe (late Vice President Joshua Nkomo), (Josiah Zanla defence chief) Tongogara and (Solomon) Mujuru (late former Commander Defence Forces) that the army now assists in political transitions and now shoots civilians.</blockquote>
ZAPU spokesperson Iphithule Maphosa told New Zimbabwe that Hanana had indeed fled and was not sure of his whereabouts. Said Maphosa:
<blockquote>It is true that the director of DD Foundation has been a target of suspected state security agents, following his speech at DD’s memorial at White City.
While we are not sure of his whereabouts, we are hopeful of his and his family’s safety.
… We have received complaints from a number of Zapu leaders who are being followed around and monitored since the death and funeral of president Dumiso Dabengwa.
It is a precarious situation but we are not deterred.</blockquote>

Even at his funeral, his stance remained the same. He would never join Zanu PF- a failed, oppressive, violent and dictatorial party.
The ZIPRA supremo, Dumiso Dabengwa was buried in Ntabazinduna yesterday.
The family and ZAPU were clear on their distaste for Zanu PF. In fact, the banner of the day read, “OVER MY DEAD BODY, I WILL NEVER JOIN ZANU PF”.
This was a quote from Dabengwa during his incarceration at Chikurubi Maximum Prison in 1986.
The pathetic attempt by the government MC, Rev Damasane, to sideline President Chamisa and Chief Ndiweni backfired big time as the family demanded their space and used it to allow the People’s President Adv Chamisa and the firebrand Chief Ndiweni to address the mourners.
In fact Dabengwa’s widow, Margaret demanded that President Chamisa be given the floor and an opportunity to lay his wreath of flowers.
The president left the crowd captivated with his strong message of love, tolerance and respect. He vowed to finish the unfinished business of the real freedom fighters.
Vice Presidents Hon Lynette Kore, Hon Tendai Biti and Prof Welshman Ncube accompanied the President.
More than 40 MDC MPs attended the burial.
A South African delegation composed of Umkhonto weSizwe retired Generals and emissaries from President Ramaphosa and former President Jacob Zuma raised the profile of the funeral from a national to a regional one.
Dabengwa got a befitting send-off.
He was indeed a national hero who remained humble and connected to his community.
He was buried among his people.

FULL TEXT: Dabengwa Vowed Never To Rejoin ZANU PF

Zapu secretary-general, Strike Mnkandla told mourners at Dabengwa’s burial in Ntabazinduna on Saturday that the Zapu leader tried to influence a national transitional authority but his efforts were in vain. Mnkandla said:
<blockquote>In the area of governance, Dabengwa was committed to promoting democratisation and peaceful change.
In-spite of the fact that he knew what to do when there was no peace. Dabengwa also tried other peaceful elements. He tried to push for an NTA. He tried to show that there was soft landing after President Mugabe left, but that was not to happen.</blockquote>

Dabengwa Died A Bitter Man After His Push For A National Transitional Authority Was In Vain

The late Dumiso Dabengwa’s friends have described him as a visionary and peaceful leader. One of his friends in the video below said that Dabengwa was against the oppression of black people, particularly by black people.

Nelson Chamisa spoke at the graveside of late Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa in Ntabazinduna. He was given the opportunity to speak apparently after Dumiso Dabengwa’s widow, MaKhumalo, told the Master of Ceremonies that the programme could not conclude before Nelson Chamisa was allowed to speak.
Said Chamisa:
<blockquote>Baba Dabengwa, you instructed as a commander, we’ll execute your mission. We’ll finish what you started. We’ll complete the journey. You told us to bring everyone together, we’ll be united. We will not disappoint you.
We know that you were talking about the ZAPU properties. They will come back to ZAPU. You were talking about the files that disappeared, those files will come back. You were talking about devolution being our revolution, indeed it shall be our revolution.
You told us about Gukurahundi. We should not shy away from it. Let’s talk about it, apologise and make sure that we do what has to be done, to restore those who lost their lives and also those who lost property. How do we restore the lives lost? Just an apology, and frankness and truth of what happened is a way of honouring those who lost their lives.
Those are the words I have, I was not ready to say anything. I thought just coming here was my speech. I didn’t want to say words because tina sifuni kuhlonipa avadhala vethu.
This struggle is a struggle of all Zimbabweans. Baba Dabengwa we thank you. Mama Dabengwa we thank you. We thank the entire family. I also was to thnk my comrades who are not here present.
Is it not a sad indictment that you have President Cyril Ramaphosa sending somebody to represent, yet we have our vice presidents and our president not coming to honour this man. Is it not a sad thing.
I’m really heartbroken that they have decided not to give the honour that is required to this man. This man was a princpled man, and you know in our country fighting for principle can earn you ostracisation, marginalisation or being killed. But he remained with his principle. We salute you.</blockquote>

The military was openly criticised for its role the current problems faced in Zimbabwe at Dumiso Dabengwa’s funeral on Friday. Present at the funeral were General Phillip Valerio Sibanda the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander,  Commissioner General Paradzai Zimondi, and some Zanu-PF Minister including Mangaliso Ndlovu and Victor Matemadanda.

Military Leaders Openly Criticised For Role In Zimbabwe's Current Problems At Dabengwa Funeral

A <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2019/05/30/why-its-a-mistake-by-dabengwa-and-others-to-shun-national-heroes-acre/">ZimLive opinion</a> contends that the refusal by some National Heroes to be buried at the National Heroes Acre is a mistake.
<blockquote>Heroes do not and must not reflect our emotive and transient national political moment. Heroes are for posterity. The great great descendants of Dumiso Dabengwa, who, in 50 years’ time will know little or nothing of the personal feud between one Robert Mugabe and his/her heroic, iconic, freedom-fighting great grandpa must not be punished to digging up explanations for why the warrior lies not at the only national shrine.
Dabengwa must be where he will be most useful to future generations, there where the historical glare of future cameras shall focus.
Lady Stanley Cemetery, where many lie, is potentially a future suburb landscaped over dry bones. Even as I write, the great Chief Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni is battling back and forth to retain control of iNtabayezinduna. And Dabengwa’s grave there could soon be inside a front-end loader.

"Dabengwa's Refusal To Be Buried At Heroes Acre A Mistake"

The late ZAPU Dumiso Dabengwa felt that Gukurahundi was supposed to never become a closed chapter in the same way that the war for independence is. This was revealed by the director of the Dumiso Dabengwa foundation, Mthulisi Hanana, at the late National Hero’s funeral.

Dabengwa Wanted Gukurahundi To Never Become A Closed Chapter

Norton Legislator lamented today that South African ANC officials were more “prominent” at the funeral of the late ZAPU leader Dumiso Dabengwa, than were Zanu-PF officials. He said he was particularly disappointed that fellow “ZIPRA Cadre”  Kembo Mohadi did not attend the funeral.

This absence got me thinking…If one can’t come to bury one of the most revered Commanders of the struggle, we have a long way to go.
Even in Parly, Madam Speaker failed to recognise a minute of silence in respect of Dr. Dabengwa’s passing….it’s sad, but you can’t put a good man down, it was a great send off for a great man!

The Director of the Dumiso Dabengwa Foundation, Mthulisi Hanana came out guns blazing in defence of the late national hero Dumiso Dabengwa’s legacy.
Hanana was speaking during a memorial service held in honour of the departed hero on Friday at Bulawayo’s White City Stadium.
He called on Dabengwa’s spirit to tell other departed heroes, the likes of Tongogara, Masuku, Mujuru and Lesabe of the misery being experienced by Zimbabweans at the hands of rogue elements. Said Hanana

'ZIPRA Veteran Gives Dabengwa Message For Tongogara, Mujuru & Masuku'

MDC leader Nelson Chamisa said that the late national hero Dumiso Dabengwa died on the right side of history.
He said this to New Zimbabwe after reports claimed that he had been barred from sitting in VIP tent at the memorial service held in Dabengwa’s honour at White City Stadium on Friday. He said:
<blockquote>Dabengwa stood for values of Ubuntu and respected human beings not on the basis of age of class but on a people to people level. He was a principled man in a country in which such a stance invites scorn, derision or death.
This national hero believed in young people and that is why he endorsed us. That endorsement is permanent and irrevocable.
Dabengwa was a hero of two struggles, the liberation and democratic struggles. He understood that political independence without economic independence is hollow and meaningless. Dabengwa understood that.
He remains a towering giant in the emancipation of our people and we are ready to carry the torch forward to its logical conclusion.</blockquote>
Dabengwa left the ruling ZANU PF party a few years ago and sought to revive ZAPU party. In the runup to the 2018 general election, he threw his weight behind Chamisa, who at the time was leading the MDC Alliance.

Dabengwa Died On The Right Side Of History - Chamisa

The late national hero, Dumiso Dabengwa’s widow, Zodwa, suffered double tragedy within a month as she lost her mother on April 24 and her husband on May 23.
Zodwa, known to friends and family members as MaKhumalo, could not attend her mother’s funeral as she was by her husband’s side who was undergoing treatment for a liver ailment in India.
Her mother, Janet Khumalo nee Ndiweni, died on April 24 and was buried on April 29.
A family friend who spoke to ZimLive said:
<blockquote>She could not attend her mother burial on April 29 because her husband really needed her, the disease was overwhelming him. MaKhumalo has had the worst possible 30 days imaginable.
She has a large family, they will rally round to support her but only she will bear the pain, only she feels the enormity of it.</blockquote>
A memorial service was held for the late national hero on Friday at Bulawayo’s White City Stadium.
Thousands of people from all walks of life thronged the venue to pay their last respects to the former ZIPRA supremo.
Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Phillip Valerio Sibanda, one of the men commanded by Dabengwa during the war of independence, was in attendance, as were former ZIPRA cadres and a delegation from South Africa’s Umkhonto weSizwe.

Dabengwa's Widow Suffered Double Tragedy, Lost Mother & Husband Within 30 Days

Thousands of people from all walks of life filled the White City Stadium on Friday to bid farewell to the late national hero Dumiso Dabengwa during a memorial service conducted in his honour.
Speaking at the occasion, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs Bulawayo Judith Ncube said:
<blockquote>Many people have spoken about ubaba uDabengwa’s remarkable contributions to the national cause.
Dabengwa has not anointed a hero, he worked for this accolade that no one can erase or take away from him.
What happened in declaring him a national hero is that there wasn’t a meeting to deliberate about what honour suits him.
But the President soon after learning that he had died, that a hero had died, he (President Mnangagwa) adjourned a meeting that he was holding and had to make a Press briefing quickly thereby confirming that a hero of heroes had died.
The President was observing ubaba uDabengwa’s works.</blockquote>
Dabengwa passed away on Thursday last week in Nairobi, Kenya on his way back home from India where he had gone to receive treatment for a liver condition.
He will be buried this Saturday at his home area in Emanxeleni, Ntabazinduna in Matabeleland North.

Thousands Of People Throng Stadium To Honour Dabengwa

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has revealed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa will not attend the burial of national hero Dumiso Dabengwa set for Saturday (today) in Ntabazinduna.
Charamba said that Mnangagwa made the decision in the spirit of respecting the bereaved family’s request for privacy. Said Charamba:
<blockquote>If a national hero’s family accepts the designation of national hero but opts for a private burial, immediately the State President cannot participate directly except through delegated authority.
The moment the President gets to that, it means we take over and that breaches the privacy and control of the family. So he will be represented at an appropriate level.
In short, the President doesn’t go. This is for the purpose of upholding the privacy and control preferred by the bereaved family but more critically to also protect the National Heroes’ Acre because the moment we allow people to have a bite of the cherry then we are undermining the national shrine.</blockquote>
