The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says there is no going back in the fight against drug and substance abuse and, through the National Committee on the Elimination of Drugs and Substance Abuse, will continue naming and shaming drug barons and suppliers in any part of the country.
The ZRP has urged the public to continue forwarding information regarding drug barons and suppliers through the National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.
On Tuesday, 07 May 2024, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi released the names of 27 drug barons and suppliers who were convicted by the courts. These are:
<ul>
<li>Tinotenda Muronzi (24), of Maridale Norton, for possession of unregistered medicines. The suspect was convicted and paid a fine of US$100.00.</li>
<li>Prudence Chinhoyi (29), of Glenview, Harare, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 14 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>George Zacharia (44), of Tynwald South, Harare, for possession of unregistered medicines. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay US$ 100 or 3 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Hubert Murindagomo (42), for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to nine months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Victor Kurai Ngorima, of Belvedere, Harare, for possession of unregistered medicines. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Leeroy Bruice Tungana (28), of Hatfield, Harare, for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Tafadzwa Sankulami (28), of Willdale Old Camp, Harare, for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to perform 280 hours of community service.</li>
<li>Sarah Gomwe (36), of Rujeko, Chinhoyi, for possession of 725 grams dagga. The suspect was sentenced and convicted to perform 255 hours of community service.</li>
<li>Tinashe Gangwa (28), of Glenorah A, Harare, for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Thomas Moyo (41), of Thorngroove, Bulawayo, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to perform 175 hours of community service.</li>
<li>Lwisani Dube (19), of New Luveve, Bulawayo, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to perform 105 hours of community service.</li>
<li>Tarisai Dhliwayo (28), of Dulibadzimu, Beitbridge, for unlawful dealing in dangerous drugs. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 19 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Dean Michael, of Famona, Bulawayo, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$300.00.</li>
<li>Thamsanqa Moyo (23), of Lobengula West, Bulawayo, for possession of 470 grams dagga and 96 X 100mls Benylin cough Syrup. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 24 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Caroline Muingayi (40), of New Lobengula, for possession of 738 grams of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Zororai Mapindure (40), of Runyararo West, Masvingo, for possession of 8 kilograms of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$400.00.</li>
<li>Netsai Nganhira (50), of Glenview, Harare, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$200.00</li>
<li>Takesure Christ (28), for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 17 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Stancilous Mushanga (29), of Glenview 1, Harare, for possession of unregistered medicines. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$100.00.</li>
<li>Melani Gutsire (37), of Warren Park 1, Harare for possession of unregistered medicines. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$150.00.</li>
<li>Nyasha Mpofu (24), of Gail Court, Harare, for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 10 months imprisonment.</li>
<li>Nyasha Nyabunze (23), of Churu Mine, Chiweshe, for possession of 0.56 grams of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$200.00.</li>
<li>Tatenda Vito (29), of Glenorah A, Harare, for possession of dagga. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to perform 420 hours of community service.</li>
<li>Tawanda Sibindi (18), of Mbare, Harare for possession of crystal meth. the suspect was convicted to 12 months imprisonment. Newton Berejena (70), of Adbernie, Harare, for possession of unregistered medicine. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to pay a fine of US$150.00.</li>
<li>Christopher Marambakurwa (42), of Kambuzuma, Harare, for possession of crystal meth. The suspect was convicted and sentenced to 30 months imprisonment.</li>

27 Suspects Convicted Of Drug And Substance Abuse Charges

Police have arrested two suspected drug dealers in Harare, Mai Toga, and Dexter Muteredhe, in separate incidents.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi on Monday confirmed the arrest of Norah Makwavarara (40), also known as Mai Toga, at 13 Marsham Flat along Baines Avenue, Harare.
She was allegedly found in possession of Chrystal Meth with a street value of more than ZWL$5 million. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

On 13th January 2024 detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics, Harare acted on received information and arrested Norah Makwavarara at 13 Marsham Flat along Baines Avenue, Harare for possession of 0.053 kilogrammes of Chrystal Meth with a street value of ZW$ 5 300 000.00.
On 15th January 2024, the suspect appeared at Harare Magistrate Court where she was remanded in custody to 16th January 2024 for bail application.
The suspect has been previously arrested for dealing in dangerous drugs on two different occasions and was on bail pending trial.
In one of the incidents, the suspect was arrested on 25th February 2023 for unlawful possession of 10 X 100 mls Benylin Cough Syrup, 09 X 100 mls Broncleer Cough Syrup, 08 X 100 mls Adco-Salterpyn Cough Syrup and 3 grammes of Crystal Meth.
The suspect appeared at Harare Magistrate Court on 02nd August 2023 where she defaulted court and was issued with a Warrant of Arrest.
In another incident, the suspect was arrested on 06th May 2023 for unlawful possession of Crystal Meth and was taken to Harare Magistrates Court where she was remanded out of custody to 21st March 2024 for continuation of trial.

Police said Muteredhe (34) was arrested at Alban Court, corner Blackstone and Fife Avenue, Harare after a tip-off,  and he was found in possession of 48 grammes of Crystal Meth. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

Meanwhile, on 13th January 2024 detectives from CID Drugs and Narcotics acted on received information and arrested Dexter Muteredhe (34) at Alban Court, corner Blackstone and Fife Avenue, Harare, for unlawful possession of 48 grammes of Crystal Meth.

Police Arrest Two Suspected Drug Dealers In Harare's Avenues Area

Police have launched a manhunt for ten (10) suspected drug kingpins in Harare who are believed to have been supplying illicit drugs to the public.
<a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/manhunt-for-10-drug-kingpins/">The Sunday News</a> reported that over the past two weeks, law enforcement agents have arrested over 1 500 drug dealers across the country under a multi-agency operation codenamed “No to dangerous drugs and illicit substances: See something, say something”.
Secretary for Harare Metropolitan Provincial Affairs and Devolution Tafadzwa Muguti said the Government will ensure that all drug dealers are brought to account. He said:
<blockquote>
Once the police have reasonable suspicion that you are dealing in drugs, they have no choice but to call you in for questioning.
In Harare Province, I understand at least 10 well-known drug lords are on the run and police are looking for them.
As Government, we will continue to pour resources into the operation to make sure all those responsible for selling drugs are brought to book.
</blockquote>
Muguti added that about 40 percent of those arrested during the operation were from Warren Park. He said:
<blockquote>
For the benefit of those who may not understand our position on drugs, it’s very simple: If you buy drugs, you take drugs, you sell drugs or you transport drugs, this means you are part of the value chain of the drug industry. All of the above are illegal activities.
No fish is too small or too big; as long as you play a role, you will face the music.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said:
<blockquote>
We can neither deny nor confirm that specific individuals are wanted for questioning, but police have intensified investigations into several suspected drug kingpins.
Some have gone into hiding, but police will not leave any stone unturned as we continue with the operation across the country.
To date, about 1 500 people have been arrested in connection with their involvement with drugs across the country.
So far, police have recovered large quantities of mbanje, crystal methamphetamine — commonly referred to as mutoriro — and bottles of banned addictive cough syrups such as BronCleer, Benylin with Codeine and Adco-Salterpyn syrup, among other illicit substances in a recent raid in Mbare.
Some of the houses we raided were being used by people as waiting rooms, but are now being occupied by some families who were engaging in criminal activities such as brewing illicit and dangerous substances, which promote drug and substance abuse and related criminal activities.

Police Launch Manhunt For 10 Suspected Drug Kingpins

Drug abusers will no longer be treated as victims but as criminals, a senior government official has said.
Harare Metropolitan Affairs and Devolution secretary Tafadzwa Muguti on Friday said treating drug users as victims will not help in ending the scourge of drug abuse.
He was speaking at the launch of a national anti-drug operation dubbed No To Dangerous Drugs And illicit Substances; See Something Say Something. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200006999/govt-declares-war-on-drug-abusers">NewsDay</a> quoted Muguti as saying:
<blockquote>
We have stopped looking at rehabilitation first before arrest because that is the mistake we were doing.
If we find someone who is under the influence of drugs, the law says that you can be arrested for being drunk and intoxicated in public.
So as it is, anyone who is found under the influence of drugs is eligible to arrest and they will tell us when they get sober where they would have bought the drug.
If we continue treating drug users as victims while they know exactly where the drugs are coming from, we won’t stop this pandemic.
</blockquote>
Police in Harare on Friday arrested 10 drug users and peddlers, with one of them found in possession of 50 bottles of Bron Cleer cough syrup.
During the raid yesterday, several drug users were nabbed at police roadblocks in Southerton.
Muguti said drug dealers are operating mainly from high-density suburbs and transporting the drugs using passenger vehicles. He said:
<blockquote>
As you saw today, we have captured a number of drug lords who were actually transporting drugs using passenger vehicles.
We are now aware that drug lords are now using high-density suburbs as safe havens. 
Government raised concern over the increasing involvement of schoolchildren in drug and substance abuse and implored school heads to treat drug offences as criminal offences, not as disciplinary offences.

Drug Abusers To Be Treated As Criminals, Not Victims - Muguti

The leader of the Diplomatic Intelligence Party (DIP) Ashley Zhou has claimed that dangerous drugs are being sold to young people in Bulawayo’s central business district and law enforcement agents are doing nothing to curb the vice.
Ndlovu said that the selling of dangerous drugs to the youth of Bulawayo is becoming a provincial security threat. He said:
<blockquote>
There are certain individuals who are operating along Sixth Avenue. The continued selling of dangerous drugs to the youth of Bulawayo is slowly becoming a provincial security threat.
Benylin with codeine is sold to schoolchildren. This is highly unacceptable and immoral because this medicine may lead to drowsiness and impaired concentration which may be aggravated by the simultaneous intake of alcohol or other central nervous system depressant agents.
Furthermore, exceeding the prescribed dose, together with prolonged and continuous use of this medication may lead to dependency and addiction.
The most heartbreaking thing is that law enforcement people turn a blind eye to such criminal activities.
The victims are our kith and kin. High school pupils and the youths. These illegal drug dealers are not pharmacies hence, cannot sell medication to people.

Responding to the allegations raised by Zhou, ZRP spokesperson in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, said they had not received reports on drug peddling.

Opposition Leader Claims Drug Peddling Is Rampant In Bulawayo CBD

Criminal organizations are now using food delivery services to transport drugs and other illicit goods as countries lockdown during the global COVID-19 pandemic, Interpol has revealed.
The practice has been reported in countries such as Ireland, Malaysia, Spain and the United Kingdom where delivery drivers have been caught transporting drugs such as cocaine, marijuana, ketamine and ecstasy.
In Ireland, Gardai officers (the police service of the Republic of Ireland) recovered 8 kilograms of cocaine as well as two handguns hidden in pizza boxes.
In some cases, delivery riders work in cahoots with drug dealers for financial gain while in others they have been used as unwitting drug mules.
In one Malaysian case, a food delivery rider contacted police and asked for his food package to be inspected after he became suspicious.
The alert rider had been tasked with delivering a single order of Indian flatbread yet the parcel weighed approximately 11 kilograms.

Dealers Using Food Delivery Services To Transport Illicit Drugs During Lockdowns

The selling and consumption of illicit drugs is reported to be rife in Bulawayo, the country’s second-largest city.
According to a Sunday News report, the drugs, which comprise prescription medicines and other illegal substances, are smuggled into the country from South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and Tanzania.
Drugs peddlers get their supplies from drug lords in the stated countries. The drugs are then sold within the city’s CBD, residential areas and even at schools.
A Sunday News source who is said to be an addict is quoted as saying:
<blockquote>They can be found at clustered parts of the CBD, areas such as 6th Avenue where there are touts and vendors.
At 12th Avenue, you can find them operating near a Honda Fit taxi rank. At 1st Avenue, there is a lot of activity there as there are brothels and prostitutes and also the market area.
Some operate near the city centre swimming pool. Some of them have invaded places like recreational parks, and schoolchildren are not spared.
Some mostly rely on regular clients who call them when they want to get high. If you are a new customer you have to be referred by someone.
So they keep their drugs in cars and deliver them to clients to avoid being arrested.
They also even have runners at schools who supply schoolchildren with drugs.</blockquote>
In Western suburbs, cheap drugs are mostly peddled. These include broncleer and mbanje. Added the publication’s source:
<blockquote>There are cheap drugs found in the ghetto such as broncleer and mbanje. These are very common among the youths and also the unemployed.
They can mostly be found at drug dealers’ houses and points such as shopping areas, where vendors operate from. This is where cheap drugs such as broncleer, mbanje and some prescription medicines are found.</blockquote>
Some youths reportedly go as far as prescription drugs such as diazepam, affects chemicals in the brain that is used to treat anxiety disorders.
