The ZANU PF War Veterans League has joined other party provinces and wings in calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to reconsider his decision not to seek re-election when his current term expires in 2028.
The Constitution of Zimbabwe allows for a maximum of two presidential terms, meaning Mnangagwa cannot legally seek a third term in office.
On 04 July 2024, Mnangagwa had pledged not to seek a third term, reaffirming his respect for the constitutional term limits.
However, in an with ZBC News on Wednesday night, ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans, Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Douglas Mahiya, said the war veterans’ league will try to persuade Mnangagwa to continue in office beyond 2028.
Mahiya argued that this would enable Mnangagwa to fully implement his Vision 2030 agenda of transforming Zimbabwe into an upper-middle-income society. Said Mahiya:

The question (is not) whether he wants to rest or not, we can beg him to stay so that we benefit from his capabilities.
We don’t go about complying with individual thinking, expressions or understanding, we stick to the original principles of the revolution.

The ZANU PF Masvingo Province was the first to publicly call for Mnangagwa to stay in power beyond his current term, followed by the ZANU PF Midlands Youth League.
Since then, ZANU PF youth leagues in several other provinces, including Mashonaland East, Bulawayo, and Matabeleland North, have also requested that Mnangagwa disregard the constitutional two-term limit and continue as president.

The War Veterans League in Zimbabwe wants President Mnangagwa to stay in power after 2028, even though he said he wouldn't. They think he should finish his plans to make Zimbabwe better. Some other party regions also agree. The Constitution says he can only be president for two terms, but they want him to have a third. They believe he is capable of doing more for the country. President Mnangagwa had promised not to seek another term, but now some people are trying to change his mind.

ZANU PF War Veterans League Pushes For Mnangagwa Third Term

The War Veterans League has pledged loyalty to ZANU PF and expressed commitment to ensuring the ruling party’s sustainable growth.
Speaking at the inaugural two-day War Veterans League National Assembly meeting in Harare on Wednesday, the Secretary for the League, Douglas Mahiya, said:

The league commits itself to ensuring the sustainable growth of our Party ZANU PF. Since the formation of the League in 2022, our department has been seized with the mammoth task of operationalising our structures by educating members on their constitutional mandate as well as on how they should work with other wings of the party…
The league will ensure that ZANU PF builds visible and vibrant structures. In that pursuit, we continue to conscientise the masses on the agenda of the West to undermine ZANU PF and subvert our Government.
The ZANU PF constitution provides that war veterans, ex-political prisoners, detainees and restrictees, protect the party and its leadership.
We also observe with concern, similar efforts by former colonisers to subvert governments that are led by former liberation movements in Southern Africa.
We will remain vigilant to counter such machinations by the West and their surrogates.

The meeting was attended by more than 600 war veterans and ex-political prisoners, detainees and restrictees, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/war-vets-pledge-loyalty-to-zanu-pf/">The Herald</a>.
Mahiya also said the War Veterans League supports the ongoing process of enacting the Private Voluntary Organisations Amendment Bill saying the law will deal with rogue Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs).

War Veterans Pledge Loyalty To ZANU PF

President Emmerson Mnangagwa Saturday reappointed Vice President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Constantino_Chiwenga">Constantino Chiwenga</a> and former VP <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kembo_Mohadi">Kembo Mohadi</a> as the Second Secretaries of the ruling ZANU PF party.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Oppah_Muchinguri">Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri</a> was also <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/president-mnangagwa-appoints-new-central-committee-and-politburo-members/">reappointed</a> as National Chairperson, completing the party’s four-member Presidium.

Members of the ZANU PF War Veterans League have advised opposition political parties to forget about political power, saying their desires were misguided.
Speaking at the party headquarters in Harare during a strategic meeting for the league’s national executive on Friday 30 September 2022, Douglas Mahiya branded the opposition as puppets who were bent on reversing the gains of the liberation struggle. The Herald cites him as saying:

The question of power is not what we should be talking about as Zimbabweans, because the country got the political power from the colonisers.
We got that political power. We were the force behind getting that political power. So any political party that is going to discuss about the desire for political power is misguided.
What opposition political parties should do is to contribute towards economic development, because this is the stage of the revolution in which we are and that way it will be acceptable. Not political power.
No one in this country will ever expect the war veterans to accept anything rather than what we achieved. So we are going to defend that power. We have no option because that is what we yielded out of our own sacrifices.

Mahiya speaks as Zimbabwe is headed towards the 2023 harmonised elections which some analysts believe will be chaotic <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/here-are-some-of-the-cases-of-politically-motivated-violence-reported-ahead-of-26-march-by-elections/">as intraparty and interparty violence has been escalating</a> in the southern African country in recent months.
This is not the first time War Veterans vowed to guard against a change of power, they made similar remarks in previous elections.

Mahiya Advises Opposition To Forget About Political Power, Says They're Misguided

The ZANU PF war veterans league on Thursday declared that it will do everything in its power to defend the ruling party.
Speaking during a Press conference in Harare, war veterans secretary Douglas Mahiya accused opposition parties and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of being used by Western countries to effect regime change in Zimbabwe. Said Mahiya:

We are going out there to mobilise for the party. We have got political power, the question of power is not what we should be talking about in Zimbabwe, because Zimbabwe got political power from the colonisers… an opposition party that talks of power is misguided.
Our erstwhile enemies have planted their proxies, the opposition parties and NGOs to scatter the organisation… we are going to defend that power because we sacrificed for this.

ZANU PF national commissar Mike Bimha also said the party would use the ZANU PF war veterans conference which started on Thursday in Harare to garner support ahead of the 2023 elections. He said:

As you are all aware the inaugural war veterans league conference is now in motion, which is a wing of the party, we are now witnessing history in the making.
And, therefore, for us as commissariat we welcome the coming on board of this league; it makes our jobs easier joining the youth and women’s leagues, moreso as we face the 2023 elections.

War Veterans Vow To Defend ZANU PF Rule

ZANU PF warned members associating with former national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere that they risk suspension from the ruling party.
The threat comes amid accusations that some party members were putting Kasukuwere’s image as well as that of the late former president Robert Mugabe on party WhatsApp groups.
ZANU PF also wants party members to always denounce Kasukuwere, popularly known as Tyson.
The former commissar relocated to South Africa in the aftermath of the November 2017 military coup that toppled Mugabe and replaced him with Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Tyson has been linked to a plan to challenge Mnangagwa in the 2023 general elections, a move that has reportedly polarised ZANU PF structures.
A party insider told The Standard that secretary for war veterans Douglas Mahiya a fortnight ago told party members that a decision had been taken to suspend anyone, who will be found having links to Kasukuwere.
Mahiya made the announcement during a meeting that was to announce the elevation of Harare Provincial Affairs minister, Oliver Chidawu into the politburo at the ruling party’s Harare headquarters. Said an unnamed party official:
<blockquote>
There is a memo advising party structures that anyone, who is found supporting Kasukuwere will be suspended from the party.
Mahiya told party structures that anyone found with Kasukuwere’s picture on their WhatsApp status or party group icons will be suspended. This also included Mugabe’s picture.
The party wants to dilute Kasukuwere’s perceived support base in the ruling ZANU PF party.
It was made clear that all meetings should denounce Kasukuwere and the G40 cabal without fail and anyone who is seen posting pictures of him, even with Mugabe in that picture, should face disciplinary action.

Mahiya is said to have taken the same message to other provinces to try to destroy Kasukuwere’s perceived support within the party structures.
Reports indicate that ZANU PF is using mostly 2014 party structures that worked with Kasukuwere as the commissar.

ZANU PF Members Ordered To "Always" Denounce Kasukuwere

War veterans Association chairperson for Mashonaland Central province Sam Parirenyatwa has accused war veterans secretary in ZANU PF Politburo, Douglas Mahiya, of defying president Emmerson Mnangagwa’s order of stopping him from spreading and forming a war veterans league in the party.
In a letter that was seen by Bulawayo24.com, Mahiya invited veterans of the liberation struggle in the province for inter districts in the province today and tomorrow at different venues and times. Reads part of it the letter written by Mahiya:
<blockquote>
The Veterans of the Liberation Struggle (VLS) is set to hold inter-district meetings in Mashonaland Central Province from 26 to 27 November 2021.
The meeting will be attended by War Veterans, War Collaborators, Ex political Detainees and Restrictees and Non-Combatant Cadres.
</blockquote>
However, Parirenyatwa said the meeting was meant to mobilize support for incumbent party chairperson Kazembe Kazembe. Reads a leaked chat by Parirenyatwa in ZANU PF provincial group:
<blockquote>
Morning Commanders. There is a meeting being called for today and tomorrow by the veterans league. I have checked with our HQ and am told hakuna such a meeting.  Hanzi the vetersns league yakamiswa na President. Hapana chati chachinja. Zvatinoziva ndezvekuti Cde Mahiya varikuuya kubatsira Cde KK campaigning for Provincial championship zvinova zvisiri pamutemo. Party haisati yadaidzira ma Provincial elections. Zvirikunzi pane bag hombe remari ravapihwa. Please musarenge ma Cdes achishandiswa kuputsa musangano. Kana munhu achirwisana neshoko ra President , isign yekupanduka. Ngatigwarirei kuzodzwa.

It is further alleged that Mahiya allegedly got US$20 000 from Kazembe to make sure he retained the chairmanship post.
Contacted for Kazembe referred questions to war veterans and rubbished the bribe allegations saying “the 20k thing is something you have just cooked in your caucus meetings to create a story.”

War Veteran Mahiya Accused Of Defying Mnangagwa's Order

Zimbabwe is constructing a Museum of African Liberation in Westlea, opposite Warren Park 1 High School in Harare.
Speaking ahead of the ground-breaking ceremony for the project in Harare this Thursday, ZANU PF Secretary for War Veterans Affairs, Douglas Mahiya said the liberation war veterans commit to partner with the Institute of African Knowledge in the project by providing accurate content, and information around the struggle. He added:
<blockquote>The capturing of our liberation, stories of war, information and collection of war artefacts is indeed an interesting African project which we are happy to be associated with.
Our interest is not only legal, emotional or partisan but is indeed formed on a national foundation as veterans of the liberation struggle. As war veterans, we are here to rubber-stamp our commitment to this national and continental project and we would like to declare our role in helping Zimbabweans to tell the liberation story for our future generations.
We will be able to do that with the people because as you know, it should be understood that, the freedom fighters had a relationship that is of fish and water with the people. So the story that we are going to tell is not exclusive as freedom fighters, but an inclusive story with the generality of Zimbabweans who participated in the liberation struggle.</blockquote>

Patrick Chinamasa, the ZANU PF acting spokesperson told reporters in Harare that the ruling party has already won the 2023 general elections.
Chinamasa did not explain how the party “has won” the elections two years before they are held but told journalists that under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Zimbabwe had turned around a corner. Chinamasa said:
<blockquote>2023 is a dead rubber election. It’s over before voting.</blockquote>
Chinamasa also said a lot of developments occurred before and during the November 2017 military coup period but the ruling party was not yet ready to disclose them at the moment. He said:
<blockquote>Behind the scenes, a lot took place, but it is too early to say. The further from November 2017, the more likely we are going to tell you.</blockquote>
During the same press conference, ZANU PF secretary for war veterans Douglas Mahiya said the party did not tell Mugabe to resign in 2017.
Mahiya said they told Mugabe not to mislead the nation or do the wrong thing when his time was up.
He added that Mnangagwa was the most senior person to take over from Mugabe.

"2023 Is A Dead Rubber Election" - Chinamasa

The veterans of Zimbabwe’s war of independence have demanded that the government award them honorary degrees for their role in the liberation struggle.
The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya expressed the ex-combatants’ latest demand while addressing Mashonaland East war veterans and Zanu PF supporters in Marondera over the weekend. He said:
<blockquote>We succeed in educating people about the revolution and that land belongs to them and we succeeded and we got independence.
We were told if you face resistance from the Smith regime soldiers, here is the gun, fight them and we succeeded. The third one was to utilise land, we succeeded, and this is where we are today.
My thinking now is the government must award us degrees because we went to war and learnt principles of the revolution and we made it.</blockquote>
Mahiya also called for the government to consider giving tax exemption to companies that take care of the liberation fighters’ welfare or conduct business with entities owned by war veterans.

<li>Compensation of war victims and veterans of the liberation struggle living with disabilities</li>

War Veterans Say They Are Entitled To University Degrees

Fissures within the ruling ZANU PF party have emerged with factions within the war veterans welfare organisation, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) at each other’s throat over the launch of the party’s war veterans wing.
There is bad blood between ZNLWVA national spokesperson Douglas Mahiya and other officials in the organisation and war collaborators who are accusing him of “unilaterally” launching the ZANU PF war veterans’ wing without further consultations with key stakeholders.
Last month Mahiya launched the Mashonaland Central war veterans’ wing where he presided over appointments into the body — allegedly without consulting his colleagues.
Chairpersons of ZNLWVA from the country’s 10 provinces argued that the league formation was just rushed through the politburo, central committee and (2019 Zanu PF) conference (in Goromonzi) without consulting stakeholders. They said:
<blockquote>Provinces were expecting Mahiya to come to them to explain and update them on the modalities of conference resolutions on the league.
Ever since the period of the conference, Mahiya has not addressed veterans of the liberation struggle in any of the 10 provinces, yet he rushes to launch the league.
One wonders whose interests he is serving, also given the calibre of the people pushing him.
The war veterans demanded the party to reverse the appointments which were made during the (Mashonaland Central) meeting.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, ZNLWVA secretary-general Victor Matemadanda, who is also ZANU PF national political commissar told the Daily News that he was not aware of who organised the meeting. He said:
<blockquote>I don’t know who organised that meeting because the issue of party structures is under the commissariat department and we should have known that there is a meeting to launch the war veterans’ league.
I don’t know what really happened. Maybe he (Mahiya) has special permission to do that.</blockquote>
Vice-chairperson of the Zimbabwe Liberation War Collaborators (ZILIWACO), Josephine Gandiya, accused Mahiya of working against President Emmerson Mnangagwa. She said:
<blockquote>We have nothing to do with Mahiya’s purported launch. He is forming his own league which has nothing to do with the real war veterans.
Mahiya is working against the president. As an association, our duty is to second people who are going to be part of the war veterans’ league.
In our view, the league has not been launched. We totally dismiss what Mahiya did.</blockquote>

War Veterans Clash Over Stake In ZANU PF

The European Union (EU) has dismissed utterances by War Veterans Association’s spokesperson Douglas Mahiya that Western countries are working to destabilise Zimbabwe.
EU ambassador Timo Olkkonen said that the allegations are meant to divert Zimbabweans’ attention from the real issues. He said:
<blockquote>I don’t know where these statements are coming from. I don’t believe them. We have discussed them with colleagues and I don’t believe there is truth behind them.
So I think these issues about, you know, issues of regime change agenda and so on, are distractions.
They are attempts by certain quotas of trying to divert the attention to the real problems to something that doesn’t actually exist but sounds exciting.</blockquote>
Earlier on Wednesday, while addressing a national executive meeting of the Zimbabwe Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZLWVA) in Harare, Mahiya had accused the EU of supporting the opposition MDC and waging a war against Zimbabwe.

EU Advises War Vets Not Distract Zimbabweans From Real Issues

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) said that the European Union (EU) should know that they do not want war but if it comes, they will accept it.
This was said by ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya on Wednesday during a national executive meeting in Harare. He said:
<blockquote>We know why the EU is doing that, we know why the EU is supporting the opposition. It is because it is the same war that they were fighting against us and we are prepared to take it up because it’s a struggle.
We never wanted war, we never want war, but when war comes, you have no option, but to accept it. We want the EU to know that.</blockquote>
Mahiya also said that the war veterans will never sit down to negotiate giving up power at it was attained through struggled. Said Mahiya:
<blockquote>War veterans sat down today to be able to tell the nation, to tell the world that we are there and unmoved.
The question of power, what we went out there to do was nothing else but to get power and the question of power surely will not be negotiated.
It will never be negotiated. It will never be gotten in any other terms other than struggling, and so we struggled and got that power.
It is misdirection to think that the power we got, (that which) other people struggled to get, the African person who get power from the white man … Where it concerns power, we will never stop fighting.

New ZANU PF Politburo Appointments

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has described the way in which the late ZIPRA Commander and intelligence supremo, Dumiso Dabengwa was treated during the Gukurahundi as a mistake.
Dabengwa was together with fellow ZIPRA Commander Lookout Masuku incarcerated in 1983 at the height of Gukurahundi massacres for four years on alleged treason. He was later released and installed the Home Affairs Minister in President Robert Mugabe’s administration.
Douglas Mahiya, the spokesperson of the war veterans’ representative body said that the organisation sympathised with the way Dabengwa was treated. He said:
<blockquote>We do sympathize, you cannot have a process where no mistakes are made. Whatever is perfect today is out of a lot of mistakes in the process, so whatever mistake was done is not what we should always highlight and forgetting the good things that would have been done. So we are talking about Dabengwa’s personal life commitment and result which is political independence for the people of Zimbabwe.
When you do not make mistakes you are not doing anything. People who do not do anything do not make mistakes.</blockquote>
Mahiya added that Dabengwa’s national hero status was an obvious thing. He, however, entreated the ZNLWVA Bulawayo Province to formally write to the ZANU PF Politburo requesting the former ZIPRA commander be declared a national hero.
The former Home Affairs Minister passed away yesterday in Kenya on his way back home from India where he was seeking treatment for a liver ailment.

War Vets Describe Dabengwa's Incarceration During Gukurahundi As A Mistake

War veterans have expressed their displeasure over ‘selectively targeted’ land dispossession which the government is currently undertaking.
Speaking to the Daily News, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Douglas Mahiya said:
<blockquote>It was agreed that land which was given to war veterans must not be taken by anyone. It’s Constitutional.
There are some individuals in government who are undermining war veterans and we are not happy they are taking land which belongs to them. This is political mischief and we are not going to allow that. We are going to take action which might be unpopular because our members are suffering.
There are also some people in the party who are trying to undermine war veterans. We heard the incident which happened in Mashonaland central and other provinces during the recent independence celebrations. War veterans were badly treated, we are not happy. Like in Mashonaland central there are some people who are being used by the G40 (former Zanu PF faction) and G40 is very active in Mashonaland Central. These people must not regret in future if we take action against them.</blockquote>
It is reported that war veterans in Mashonaland Central Province recently wrote to the Minister of State for Mashonaland Central, Monica Mavhunga, complaining about land seizures. The letter warned of impending civil unrest if land grabs continued.
War veterans said that their anger is worsened by allegations that senior government officials are the ones taking these lands.

War Veterans Furious Over "Selectively Targeted" Land Dispossession

In an interview with NewZimbabwe.com, War Veterans spokesperson Douglas Mahiya said the MDC should elect a mature leader during its elective congress in May.
Mahiya said war veterans are tired of an opposition leader who opposes Zanu-PF for the sake of opposing. Said Mahiya:
<blockquote>MDC supporters must choose a person who they feel is mature, with political aptness who will be able to take their political party forward. That person must be someone who knows the values of being in opposition, political consciousness of the party; not a leader who just opposes for the sake of opposing. A leader who cannot oppose the ruling party’s good policies for the sake of opposing, but positive criticism. We are tired of an opposition leader who even blames the ruling party for a cloudy day because it was supposed to be sunny. As war veterans, we went to war for everyone to enjoy the freedom to choose who they want to lead them and we will not give the opposition a name to choose. But this is their chance to choose a mature person who will benefit both their party and the country.</blockquote>

War Veterans Urge MDC To Elect Mature Leader During Congress

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWA) has dismissed former President Robert Mugabe’s remarks as an exhibition of “childish” behaviour.
ZNLWA spokesman Douglas Mahiya said that age was taking its toll on Mugabe, hence, his utterances. Said Mahiya:
<blockquote>From the look of things, age is taking its toll on him and he now behaves like a child. Let him enjoy his retirement and his folktales must not be taken seriously.
What I urge Zimbabweans to do is to forgive Mugabe. Whatever he says now, we have to look at various issues, from his days in power, retirement and age.</blockquote>
Mugabe condemned his successor, President Emmerson Mnangagwa for deploying heavily armed soldiers to deal with protestors.
Speaking during his 95th birthday celebrations at his Borrowdale mansion on February 21, Mugabe said:
<blockquote>I did not create the army to kill people, the army does not lead politics.
Now we hear there are countless graves of people killed by the army; who is going to unearth or exhume those bodies?
What you are doing (killing people) is going to catch up with you very soon; just tomorrow, it would have caught up with you.</blockquote>

War Vets Say 'Childish' Mugabe Should Not Be Taken Seriously

War veterans have called on people to stop criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa and to give him enough time to turn around the country’s economy. This comes at a time when prices have been going up following skyrocketing rates for foreign currency on the parallel market.  The war veterans are arguing that Mnangagwa needs time because the economy had deteriorated too much under former President Robert Mugabe.  Veterans’ Association spokesperson Douglas Mahiya yesterday said,
<blockquote>With these few days in power, what kind of miracle can be done to turn around the economy when we had 38 years of waste under Mugabe? We have come a long way and this new dispensation is very young and has been in power for a few days. Why can’t people give it time? Why not allow ED to go a while and look at things positively than to continue the political onslaught against Zanu PF and ED when he has done nothing?</blockquote>

Zanu-PF’s Secretary for War Veterans and spokesperson for the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, Douglas Mahiya has insisted that the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport should be renamed despite former President Robert Mugabe now endorsing President Emmerson Mnangagwa. In an interview with NewsDay, Mahiya said
<blockquote>What Mugabe did to identify himself with the opposition, the enemies of the revolution, at the juncture, he must be judged against that. He misfired…Mugabe will be treated like anyone else who left the party and wants to be readmitted into the party. He has to re-join the party through the cells and rise again through the ranks.
The renaming of the airport was done by Kudzai Chipanga (Zanu PF former national youth leader). It was not after all people who agreed to it. 
It was Chipanga who gave a deadline that if it is not done, and no minister would sit at the high table. Are we going to maintain the G40 vow? The renaming was just a G40 assertion and we are saying: No!

War Veterans Insist RGM International Airport Should Be Renamed Despite Mugabe's Support For Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Douglas Mahiya said the opposition was causing shortages and price hikes in order to force people to rebel against a legitimate Government.
He said the current situation was proof that Zanu-PF is not getting the co-operation of the business community. Said Mahiya:
<blockquote>It is an economic battle between the oppressors and the oppressed. Price hikes and shortage of basic commodities is a battle for the people to be caused to turn against their vote and disapproval themselves from being a justifiable population to have a government which determines its destiny. That is where the antagonism is and that is why I am citing the MDC in the disappearance of these things in order to force society to rebel a legitimate elected government of the people. They failed at the ballot box and now they want to make people suffer and make people listen to them. However, we will not be able to take that.</blockquote>

MDC Causing Shortages, Price Hikes To Force People To Rebel Against Zanu-PF: War Veterans

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) have said that former president Robert Mugabe must retire and avoid speaking on political matters. The former freedom fighters are still angry at Mugabe’s alleged betrayal when he said that he would not vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa, a day before the elections. The war veterans have gone as far as writing a petition to have Mugabe’s name removed from the Robert Gabriel Mugabe international airport. Speaking to the Daily News, ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya said,
<blockquote>Congratulating … Mnangagwa was a good move but not enough. For us war veterans we think it’s irrelevant to engage him. He must just retire and keep quiet. From what he did in the past we saw that he has never been Zanu PF. He said he is supporting the MDC Alliance and by so going he is also calling for sanctions. Mugabe caused the suffering of many Zimbabweans and he has demonstrated that he is a failure.</blockquote>

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Douglas Mahiya has said that the war veterans will never allow MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa to rule the country if he wins the election. Mahiya also went on to say that Chamisa will is not going to win the July 30 harmonised elections. Addressing a Zanu-PF rally in Highfield on Monday, Mahiya said,

We Will Never Allow That "Small Boy" To Rule This Country:  Mahiya

Members of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association (ZNLWVA) have complained that they are still to experience any real change after helping in the fight to oust former President Robert Mugabe. The veterans claimed that they have been discarded by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government. Speaking to NewsDay, ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya said,
<blockquote>The ZNLWVA has noted with serious concern that hardly less than six months, the nation has forgotten the brave and unwavering battles against Mugabe and his wife (former First Lady) Grace’s [Mugabe] endeavour and restless desire to establish a dynasty.  The show is being stolen away from the war veterans… Those who were idling, bootlicking, hiding in trenches got promoted at the expense of the war veterans and the masses.
Those who were staunch supporters of G40 are now starting to congregate around the political leadership and the President, this way not much change will be realised. Political cheating, lip service to both government and the party (Zanu PF), those with political eyes can recognise the ugly face of the former. I pray to God for  new mandate of government. War veterans are waiting eagerly and expecting real change politically, economically and socially.</blockquote>

We Are Still Waiting For Real Political, Economic Change Six Months After Mugabe: War Veterans

Speaking to 263Chat, Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) chairperson for Mashonaland Central Samuel Parirenyatwa said Mnangagwa’s security team is incompetent and seems to have other motives rather than protecting the President.
Said Parirenyatwa:
<blockquote>Our major concern is with our security sector. It would appear (that) the people around the President are not competent enough or they seem to be serving other motives rather than protecting the President. We are demanding as stockholders, that we need men and women of clear credentials, who have been tried and tested in as far as the security of the president is concerned. We would rather prefer, ourselves as war veterans, to be around the president rather than having the youngsters who have proved to be incompetent.</blockquote>
Provincial Chairperson for Bulawayo Cephas Ncube said a war veteran should be appointed Zanu-PF  secretary for security. ZNLWVA Spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya told 263Chat that the war veterans executive and the entire membership was disappointed by the security team failed to foresee the bombing.

War veterans spokesperson Douglas Mahiya has said that the former freedom fighters are unhappy with the way they have been treated by the Zanu-PF party. Mahiya said that after all their efforts in fighting to remove former president Robert Mugabe they should have been given preferential treatment instead of being sidelined. Speaking to The Standard,
<blockquote>As far as I am concerned, war veterans should have been given a chance to get seats. As war veterans who have been disadvantaged for the past 38 years under former president Robert Mugabe, we should have been given a quota as is the case with women.
We have been disadvantaged and we should not be made to stand against these young persons. It is not fair to have us humiliated by these young ones who have the money and relatives at the top as was the case with Harare South…as war veterans, we implore the party to demonstrate a degree of honesty and respect the resolutions of the November 18 central committee meeting that agreed that war veterans should be raised in all structures of the party and government.
They hoodwinked us. They don’t want us to occupy positions in the party and government and we don’t know why…We stood against the Mugabe dynasty. we were jailed and received all sorts of ill-treatment. This is the party we served and why should we be undermined?</blockquote>

We Fought To Remove Mugabe But Now We Are Being Sidelined In Zanu-PF: War Veterans

War veterans spokesperson Douglas Mahiya who lost the Zanu-PF Primary Election for Harare South twice to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s nephew Tongai (pictured), has accused the Zanu-PF elections committee of selective application of rules. In an interview with The Standard, Mahiya said
<blockquote>I think the committee that ran the primary elections did a shoddy job. People are only a party when they respect their own constitution. When this is not done, they have failed. For example, one should have been in the party for five consecutive years, but my opponent in Harare South only joined the party structures in March this year and was allowed to stand. The laws in the party must apply to everybody equally. It is difficult to talk about democracy when laws are applied selectively.
I think it could have been gentlemen enough for those in the committee to resign. Now we have a problem in the party, that the provincial executives are trying to reconcile party members, but the people who created the problems are no longer available in the constituencies.
…The president never summoned me to hear my side of the story. His problem is, he does not intervene when some people under him do something. He gives people [numerous] chances to make sure they expose themselves. The commission that ran the elections had regulations, which they disregarded.  They could have done something sensible. The president acts after receiving the evidence, but sometimes it will be too late.</blockquote>
