In 2024, Zimbabwe saw a big increase in divorce cases, with 3,214 cases compared to 2,149 in 2023. Out of these, only 1,562 cases have been finalised.
In Harare, 1,945 divorce cases were recorded, with 996 completed. Bulawayo had 825 filed cases and 383 completed.
Masvingo recorded 179 cases, with 70 finalized, while Mutare had 157 cases, with 78 completed. The High Court in Chinhoyi recorded 108 cases and finalized 35.
Counsellors and social commentators are concerned about the rising divorce rates. They believe that infidelity, misuse of social media, poor communication, lingering grudges, and gender-based violence are the main reasons.
Bishop Rocky Moyo, president of the Council of Churches in Africa, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/sharp-rise-in-divorce-cases/">The Herald</a> that these statistics represent more than just numbers. He said:

These figures embody the heart-wrenching stories of families torn apart. Whether due to modern life pressures, financial strains, or communication breakdowns, the causes of these divorces are complex and multifaceted.
</blockquote>
Moyo said there are several factors contributing to the rise in divorces, including infidelity, financial difficulties, lack of intimacy, and unresolved disputes.
He warned that divorces can leave lasting emotional scars, leading to feelings of unhappiness, anger, and long-term personal turmoil.
Moyo said that praying and connecting spiritually from the beginning of a relationship can help reduce the likelihood of divorce. He believes that when couples are united in Christ, they understand each other better. He added:

As we reflect on this alarming trend, deeper discussions around mental health, relationship education, and support systems for couples are essential.
As Zimbabweans grapple with this reality, it’s essential to foster environments where love, understanding, and communication can thrive, ultimately leading to healthier relationships and, hopefully, happier families.

Zimbabwe Women Lawyers Association (ZWLA) regional director, Sethulo Ncube, said:

In our work handling women’s affairs, we see that most divorces are linked to GBV, infidelity, or financial concerns.
While some disagreements can be resolved, often the outcome is divorce, a situation that adversely affects children who end up caught between parents.

Bulawayo lawyer Tinashe Runganga advised potential spouses to take the time to truly understand each other before marriage. Said Runganga:

People often rush into marriage without fully knowing the person they intend to share their lives with. It’s advisable to date first and build a strong foundation. Unfortunately, many are marrying for the wrong reasons, including arranged or forced unions.

Divorce Cases In Zimbabwe Reach New High In 2024

Chief Makoni recently overturned the ruling by a headman’s court that had found a villager guilty of having an affair with his neighbour’s wife.
The complainant, Taurai Nyamukachi, claimed that his children informed him that their mother was having an illicit affair with a neighbour, Arthur Mugoti.
Nyamukachi of Maparura Village approached Chief Makoni’s court after Mugoti allegedly reneged on his pledge to compensate him for having an affair with his wife when the matter was brought before Headman Maparura’s court.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/children-sell-out-cheating-mom/">The Manica Post</a>, Nyamukachi told Chief Makoni’s court that his children and other villagers tipped him off about the alleged affair between Mugoti and his wife, which led to their divorce. He said:

Whenever I was away from home, Mugoti would visit my homestead. He would take my wife away and bring her back in the evening.
I was informed of this development by my own children who were fed up with their mother’s unbecoming behaviour.
Fellow villagers whom I had contracted to sink a well at my homestead also informed me of Mugoti’s frequent visits to my homestead during my absence.
At one time Mugoti came during the evening when I was around and my wife rushed to the door to inform him of my presence. My son who is doing Form Four saw him.
My son and his sibling informed me that their mother and Mugoti were seeing each other.
I reported the matter to Headman Maparura’s court. Mugoti pleaded guilty before the court and was fined a beast and three goats but he is now refusing to pay the fine.
Before the matter appeared at the village court, my mother-in-law gave me a divorce token and took her daughter away.
We are divorced now. I want Mugoti to compensate me with eight cattle for ruining my marriage.

However, Mugoti denied the allegations, saying he only visited Nyamukachi’s homestead to buy tomatoes and was never in a relationship with his wife. Said Mugoti:

I visited Nyamukachi’s homestead twice to buy tomatoes. He later called me to his homestead and confronted me about dating his wife and I denied that.
He took the matter to the headman’s court, but he failed to provide evidence of my alleged affair with his wife.
He later shifted goalposts and said I should pay him for setting foot on his homestead. I was fined a beast and two goats and I am disputing the ruling.

In its ruling, Chief Makoni’s court cleared Mugoti of any wrongdoing, saying Nyamukachi had failed to provide evidence to prove the alleged illicit relationship between Mugoti and his ex-wife.
The court quashed the headman’s ruling and said visiting someone’s homestead does not constitute cheating, adding “One cannot be fined for visiting a neighbour’s homestead”.

Chief Makoni's Court Quashes A Headman's Ruling In Adultery Case

At least 30 per cent of new marriages are collapsing within five years, reported <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/30-percent-of-unions-collapse-within-five-years-marriages-under-attack">The Sunday Mail</a>.
The Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) has said the number of divorce cases filed in courts across the country increased by more than 100 per cent in the 12 months through to December 2022.
The JSC revealed that in 2022, 2 735 divorce applications were received, while 1 351 were received in 2021.
The couples who were divorcing were married either under the Marriages Act Chapter 5:11 or the Customary Marriages Act Chapter 5:07.
Reasons cited in the divorce files include abuse, lack of communication, financial challenges and infidelity.
Harare recorded the highest number, 981, and Bulawayo was in second position with 403 cases.
Chief Ndima Chimareketa of Chimanimani told The Sunday Mail that there is a need for counselling young couples who lack a basic understanding of marriage. He said:

Divorce cases involving customary marriages are on the rise. We deal with most of them at community level because they were never legally registered.
However, in some cases, where properties are involved and where the two parties cannot reach a mutual agreement, we then refer them to courts.
Depending on the case, sometimes, we try to counsel the couples first. If they still insist on divorce, we then let them be.
We came up with the counselling strategy after noting that some of these young couples lack a basic understanding of marriage and they simply need to be taken through the steps.

Shelter Shenjere, a marriage counsellor, said at least two out of an average of seven marriage-counselling cases she handles per week end up in divorce. She said:
<blockquote>
People no longer respect the sanctity of marriage. Divorce has been normalised as one of the “best” ways of revenge or money-making schemes.

Roman Catholic priest Father Paul Mayeresa told The Sunday Mail that most couples are now marrying for the wrong reasons. Said the clergyman:

These days, most couples marry either for money or fame. As a result, most of these marriages lack affection and end up in divorce.
The priest said in the past, marriage was considered sacred but that’s no longer the case. He said:
Divorce was not common in Zimbabwe, hence it was highly stigmatised. However, society has evolved and separation is no longer a surprise.
Although this is not new, traditionally, families had ways of resolving issues behind closed doors, but it is no longer the case these days as most couples lack patience.
Children could even be born out of wedlock, but dirty linen was never washed in public, and because people married out of love, issues were solved, couples forgave each other and they peacefully continued with life.

Psychologist Nisbert Mangoro believes mental health issues are taking a toll on several marriages.
He said due to mental health issues most people now seek solace in drug and substance abuse, which has adverse effects on their marriages or families.
Social commentator Rebecca Chisamba said most marriages are now “business arrangements”, where people get married for benefits, and not love.
She encouraged couples to seek the advice of an independent counsellor as this may help save and strengthen the union.

Divorce Cases Spiked By Over 100% In 2022

A Mutasa couple was reportedly married for a few minutes before the bride’s parents broke off the union after finding out that the man was not a virgin, and was in fact, a divorcee.
The man, Prince Stefano (30) of Mandeya Village, told <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/marriage-lasts-a-few-minutes/">The Manica Post</a> that he paid a bride price of US$345 for 21-year-old Chiedza Mudzedze who is said to be a virgin. He said:
<blockquote>
I paid US$345 as the bride price. That is what had been communicated to me. However, when we went for the bride price-paying ceremony, they demanded US$800, which I did not have.
They said they would only give me my wife after paying the full amount, but these were only delaying tactics.
They did not want me to marry Chiedza because they had found out that I have a nine-year-old son.

Stefano said he paid the bride price on 3 March this year but the Mudzedze family recently informed him that they would refund him his money. He said:
<blockquote>
Chiedza is a virgin, I understand, but her family is just bitter. Her bitter sister sent me voice notes saying I was a pauper and that as a family, they had agreed that I will not be able to take care of her sister.
</blockquote>
He said he has approached Chiedza’s family to get a reimbursement, but they seem reluctant to refund him.
Chiedza, who is from Nyatsuro Village, Honde Valley, told The Manica Post that she is worth more than US$345 as she is a virgin. She said:

I am a virgin and where in this world have you heard of a virgin being married for that lousy amount? I am still young.
I am only 21 and will eventually find someone worthy of me, someone who has never been with another woman.
Prince wasted my time and lied to me that he was a virgin too. Had I not probed him, he would not have told me of his previous marriage.
I will not compete with another woman for him. Do you think his ex-wife will be happy if she hears that he married me?
We will give him his money but on our own terms. He should stop sending people here. You can also tell him that he is a loser.

Chiedza’s sister, who refused to identify herself, said Prince disrespected her family for showing up for the lobola ceremony dressed in a pair of ripped Denim trousers, a work-suit jacket and some crocs slippers. She said:
<blockquote>
It was shameful for him to show up like that. What sort of dressing is that? We will not have it as a family.
It shows that he is very disrespectful. We will refund him when we feel like it.
As it is, we feel as if we deserve that money because they did not even bring any groceries, save for one chicken.
We prepared them our food, yet they had come with a car. They pretended to be well up, yet they are not.

Prince’s aunt, Tsitsi Munyebvu Stefano said her family is planning to report the matter to the traditional leadership of the area so that they get a refund. She said:
<blockquote>
This is a family of crooks. They should have told us that they had decided otherwise before accepting Prince’s money.
I don’t know why Prince went for the lobola ceremony while donning a pair of ripped jeans and informal shoes.
What I know is that he is a good man. He did not know that he had a son until last year when his ex-wife told him.
Can that really be held against someone? I do not think so.
The families should find each other so that we can move forward. We love our daughter-in-law and I believe she also loves Prince.

In Zimbabwe, virginity is highly valued as a sign of purity, chastity, and moral fortitude but in most cases focus is on the bride rather than the bridegroom.
It is believed that a virgin wife will be more faithful, loyal, and submissive to her husband.

"Marriage" Ends After In-laws Demand Lobola Top Up

The late former President, Robert Mugabe’s daughter, Bona, is demanding US$8 100 per month in child maintenance from her estranged husband Simbarashe Mutsahuni Chikore (46) as maintenance for their three minor children.
Bona Nyapudzai Ouma Mugabe (32) is divorcing her husband of nine years on the grounds that their marriage has irretrievably broken down with no prospect of restoration.
She filed the papers at the High Court on Tuesday, 07 March 2023 under HC 1521/2023 seeking an order for a decree of divorce.
According to the court papers, Bona and Simba have lost all love and affection for each other and have been living apart for more than nine months.
The couple has three children aged seven, five and two.
Bona is claiming custody of the children and demanding US$2 700 per month for each child. She said:

In the event of the granting of the Divorce Decree by the honourable court it will be just and equitable that the Defendant be ordered to pay maintenance for the minor children in the sum of USD2, 700.00 per child monthly, until attaining of majority status or they become self-sustaining whichever occurs first.

Bona and Simba married in 2014 and the ceremony was attended by the political and business elite in Zimbabwe and outside the country.
The wedding was also broadcast live on the country’s only television channel, ZBC-TV.

Bona Mugabe Claiming US$8 100 Monthly In Child Maintenance

Renowned marriage counsellor Dr. Herbert Ndlovu says happy and successful marriages are still possible in Zimbabwe despite the 100 percent increase in divorce cases recorded in 2022.
According to statistics released by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), in 2020, 1 117 couples filed for divorce and the figure went up to 1 351 in 2021.
In 2022, the figure doubled to 2 735 cases against 13 436 recorded marriages.
Commenting on the rise in divorce cases last year, Ndlovu told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/out-with-marriage-in-with-divorce-100-rise-in-cases-at-high-court/">Chronicle</a> that couples need to respect and accept each other and also pray to God to have a successful marriage. He said:
<blockquote>
In my 27-year marriage, I have learned that acceptance plays a major role. We should stop trying to remodel our partners as that often causes strife in marriage.
Couples who also have high expectations of each other suffer disappointment since we are all humans hence the need for us to be tolerant and strive to bring the best.
Christians are chief culprits in this as they like imposing their convictions on others, successful marriages need both partners to accept differences and live in harmony.
We need to pray together and connect spiritually from day one so that when troubles emerge, we can draw inspiration from the Creator of marriages.
Couples should never relax even for a day and think that because they are married, it will stay like that.
Marriage is hard work, nothing comes automatically hence we must do everything and put a lot of effort to keep marriages thriving and happy.

Ndlovu said married people should also avoid infidelity at all costs and never discuss their partners with any third party even parents, pastors, family or friends. He said:
<blockquote>
I urge spouses to be loyal to each other, be honest and easily communicate everything.
Do not discuss your partner’s faults or any disagreements with anyone.
Loyalty means sticking with each other even in bad times.
Even when our spouses are at fault we should never discuss them with any third party even parents, pastors, family or friends.

"Successful Marriages Still Possible Despite 100% Increases In Divorce Cases"

Zimbabwe recorded a 100 percent increase in divorce cases in 2022, statistics from the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) show.
In 2020, 1 117 couples filed for divorce and the figure went up to 1 351 in 2021.
In 2022, the figure doubled to 2 735 cases against 13 436 recorded marriages.
This means that twenty (20) percent or one in five Zimbabwean marriages are likely to end in divorce.
Of the 2 735 divorce cases filed last year at the High Court in Bulawayo, Masvingo, Harare, Mutare and Chinhoyi, 1 561 were completed.
Bulawayo recorded 613, Harare 1 731, Masvingo 145, Mutare 156 and Chinhoyi 90 divorce matters.
Family lawyer Shepherd Chingarande told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/out-with-marriage-in-with-divorce-100-rise-in-cases-at-high-court/">Chronicle</a> that one of the factors pushing up the divorce rate is that some people marry for the wrong reasons. He said:
<blockquote>
People marry for the wrong reasons and that is how many get it all wrong. Some are under pressure from parents and friends based on the biological clock and they just marry whoever comes into their lives first.
Compatibility is key and when two do not have anything in common after sex, the relationship is likely to end in divorce.
Others ignore red flags with the hope that marriage can change a person and upon disappointment, they opt out.
Marriage at a young age or lack of skills to deal with tough situations can be stressful

Chingarande cited domestic violence and addictions related to drug abuse as the other factors behind the breakdown of marriages. He added:
<blockquote>
Infidelity or adultery, ethnic differences and even high expectations driven by social media can also be another source of friction leading to divorce.
</blockquote>
Psychologist Jacqueline Nkomo said that though the breakdown in marriages often comes with several consequences for the couple, children, extended family and community, in some instances, divorce is necessary. She said:

Although divorce is not commendable, sometimes it’s necessary to deliver abused spouses from toxic relationships.
However, whenever people choose to go separate ways they must go through counselling and be equipped with coping strategies to handle after effects which are more negative than positive.
Divorce disturbs the order of what has become normal to us as humans and once two people separate, children and family members suffer.
Children whose parents divorce also battle low self-esteem and may develop depression coupled with anxiety emanating from the changes that the development brings into their social, emotional and sometimes financial lives.

Zimbabwe Records A 100 Percent Increase In Divorce Cases

A man from Mutasa, Manicaland Province, claims his in-laws defrauded him by marrying off his wife of six years to another man behind his back.
Livingstone Chimombe (36) told <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/double-dipping-in-laws-marry-off-daughter-to-new-man/">The Manica</a><a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/double-dipping-in-laws-marry-off-daughter-to-new-man/"> Post</a> that his wife, Pamela Nyarukuwa (30) was married off by her family on 17 December after he was made to believe that she was only visiting her family for a traditional rite. He said:
<blockquote>
Pamela was my wife for six years and we have a five-month-old baby together. In December, she told me that she was travelling to her maternal grandparents’ home as her brothers wanted to pay chiredzwa for her to her grandparents who looked after her as she grew up.
I gave her US$40 to buy drinks for my in-laws and US$20 for her well-being. Little did I know that she was going to get married to someone else.
She would tell me that everything was going on well because I had failed to accompany her due to work commitments.
I honestly thought she was talking about the chiredzwa (thank you token) proceedings, but instead, she was talking about her marriage.
After her marriage, she went back to the house I was renting for her in Sakubva and stayed there while I was at work in Old Mutare.

Chimombe further claimed that he only got to know of Pamela’s new husband after her uncle informed him. He said:
<blockquote>
The uncle told me that they were shocked when a new man appeared on the day as they expected me as they had been told.
When I went to Sakubva to confront her, Pamela called the police and I was arrested.
I am so heartbroken that I do not know what to do. She even changed goalposts and claimed that the child was not mine.
She should come back and collect her belongings that are still at my house in Old Mutare.

Chimombe said that he was in the process of reporting the matter at Chief Mutasa’s court so that the Nyarukuwas will reimburse his roora.
However, the Jerera and Nyarukuwa families denied that Chimombe was their son-in-law.
They said that during the course of the six-year-old partnership between Chimombe and their daughter, no bride price was paid to them.
Pamela said she was never married to Chimombe but was only dating him saying they were not staying together. She said:

I left this man some months back. I even blocked all his numbers as he keeps pestering me, asking me to rekindle our lost love.
I never stayed with [him]. He stayed elsewhere while I stayed in Sakubva. He only paid my rent because we were dating.
</blockquote>
Nyarukuwa’s uncle, Billy Jerera, confirmed that his niece stayed with Chimombe for six years but that he did not pay the bride price.
Chimombe confirmed not paying the bride price for Pamela, saying she always denied him access to her relatives. He said:
<blockquote>
I would have paid lobola for her in 2017, but she refused, saying that chiredzwa had not yet been paid to her grandparents.
I took this woman to school with my money, but she is now paying me back in this manner.

Mutasa Man Accuses His In-laws Of Marrying Off His Wife Behind His Back

Former health deputy minister Edwin Muguti’s marriage has been dissolved by the High Court after his wife filed for divorce in 2019.
<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/former-health-ministers-marriage-collapses-claims-wife-denied-him-conjugal-rights/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> reported that Muguti’s ex-wife, Tapiwa Mercy Mukandi, accused the former government official of having an extra-marital affair.
Mukandi averred there were no chances of reconciliation but Muguti wanted to keep the marriage.
Harare High Court judge, Justice Amy Tsanga, granted the relief sought by Mukandi also awarding her custody of the couple’s minor child. Ruled Justice Tsanga:

Whereupon after reading documents filed of record, examining the plaintiff and hearing counsel, who applies for a decree of divorce and other relief on the grounds of irretrievable breakdown under the provisions of Section 5 of the Matrimonial Causes Act (Chapter 5:13), it is ordered that:
A decree of divorce be and is hereby granted.
Maintenance for a minor child (name supplied) shall be regulated by the order of the Maintenance Court granted on the 16th of July 2019 under Case Number M2673/19.
Custody of a minor child shall be with the plaintiff and the defendant being afforded reasonable access rights to the child during alternate weekends, public holidays and two weeks during school holidays at his own expense.

Mukandi demanded to be awarded 100% share of the couple’s Vainona property and a stand in Manresa measuring 4 000 square meters, among other properties.
However, Muguti opposed the demands saying what she wanted in shares was not due to her.
He said he acquired the Vainona stand on his own using proceeds from his previous divorce settlement.
Muguti also stated that he acquired the property independent of Mukandi for the benefit of his second wife and children from his second marriage.
The parties signed a consent on the 15th of December 2022 and filed early this year agreeing on their differences.

Former Deputy Minister's Marriage Collapses

A man from Mutasa District in Manicaland Province was divorced by his wife during their son’s funeral, a development described as a bad omen by the area’s traditional leadership.
Samuel Dube was handed a divorce token by his wife, Chipo Mapuka during their son, Lazarus Dube’s funeral on Monday last week.
The couple had two children together before Lazarus’ death.
Lazarus, who was waiting for his Grade Seven results, died following an ear infection after he had visited his mother in Odzi.
The boy’s funeral was characterised by the confiscation of the corpse, arguments with in-laws, and demands for lobola, according to Samuel Dube’s brother, Titus Sithole-Dube during an interview with The Manica Post.
Lazarus was buried in Odzi, at her mother’s home after his father failed to raise the funds to ferry the corpse back to Mutasa.
The Dubes were made to pay US$25 and a goat that was to be slaughtered at the funeral by their in-laws before they were allowed to bury Lazarus.
After the goat was slaughtered, Mapuka announced to the gathered mourners that she was divorcing Dube, and then gave him the divorce token. Said Sithole-Dube:

She took everyone by surprise. As everyone was paying attention to her bombshell, dogs came and stole the meat which had been put in a dish.
Mouths were left agape. We were forced to buy another goat as the in-laws demanded a replacement before Lazarus’ burial.
They said failure to provide another goat would result in us finding an alternative place to bury our child.

The village head, Toringepi Mapuka, told The Manica Post that it was unheard of in his area for dogs to steal meat at a funeral. He said:

My thinking is that the late Lazarus was against his burial here. A lot of mishaps were witnessed at his funeral wake.
Maybe, all these were signs that the late Lazarus wanted his body to be repatriated to their Mutasa home.
Yes, they had no money, but they should have done something to ensure that the boy was buried at his father’s rural home.
… He (Dube) was divorced in front of the mourners even though he publicly stated that he still loved his wife.
The wife alleged that he is abusive and neglects his family.

Dube said he was willing to make things right with his wife because he still loved her. He said:

I am yet to pay her lobola. Even though she divorced me in public, I still love her.
We still have a child together and if she no longer loves me, then I should have the child’s custody, lest we will lose her in the same manner as Lazarus.

Man Divorced During Son's Funeral

Former ZBC-TV news presenter Oscar Pambuka’s nine-year marriage is on the rocks after his wife, Nyasha Pambuka nee Makota, filed for divorce.
The couple’s marriage was solemnised on 21 June 2013, in terms of the Marriages Act Chapter 5:11.
In her summons for divorce, Nyasha claims their marriage had no prospects of them getting back together.
She is applying for a decree of their divorce, an order of maintenance for her two minor children and their custody. She said:
<blockquote>
The defendant (Oscar is required) to pay a monthly contribution of US$100 per child and continue paying school fees for both minor children.
An order for custody, in favour of the applicant (Nyasha), with Oscar having access during weekends from Friday 1600hrs to Sunday 1200hrs.

Nyasha reveals that she and Oscar have been separated for over a year and that she has lost love and affection for the self-styled prophet.

A Harare woman was so humiliated that she collapsed several times after her white wedding was stopped by the groom’s first wife in Harare on Saturday.
The groom, Everisto Mukura, who has four wives, intended to wed Anne Ntini Dube.
However, Everisto’s first wife, Sheron Chitowa, stopped the wedding after coming with her two children to the ceremony, and had their birth certificates, to prove her marriage.
Pastor Mathias Madzivanyika and his wife Mildred, who were among the guests, tried to console the bride and spoke to Sheron first before meeting Anne and Everisto.
Some of the invited guests wanted Everisto to hand a token of divorce (gupuro in Shona) to Sheron, so as to continue with the wedding ceremony.
Other guests blamed Everisto for preparing a wedding fully aware that he was attached to four other women. Said a guest:

Everisto deserves to be treated that way because he knew that he has four wives.
We have different types of marriage Acts in our country and he should have chosen one that goes with his beliefs or preferences.
A white wedding is for men who are comfortable with one wife, kwete vebarika (not polygamists).
As for Anne, she wasted our time in preparing two bridal showers when she was aware that Everisto had four wives.
The two have shamed us. They invited us to a shameful wedding.

Reverend Shirichena who was the presiding marriage officer said Everisto and Anne were not his congregants. He said:

The two are not my congregants but engaged me to officiate at their wedding.
They never said anything close to the issues that is why I asked with confidence if there was anyone among guests who had queries about the two.

Bride Humiliated As Groom's Wife Stops Marriage

A Kwekwe man was seriously injured when his 13-year-old stepson stabbed him in the chest for ending his relationship with the boy’s mother.
Absolom Muzanharo (45) was rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital with the knife still stuck in his chest last week.
Confirming the incident on Saturday, Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said:
<blockquote>Circumstances are that the complainant Absolom Muzanharo (45) arrived home from work and demanded his belongings from his wife Flora Nkomo (46) saying he was no longer interested in their relationship.</blockquote>
A misunderstanding arose and Muzanharo struck Nkomo with a stone once on the chest and she ran out leaving the former with his stepson in the house.
Insp Mahoko said Muzanharo tried to strike his stepson with a stick and the boy drew a knife and stabbed him once in the chest.
Muzanharo fell down with the knife stuck on his chest before Nkomo reported the matter to the police. Said Insp Mahoko:
<blockquote>The scene was attended and the suspect was arrested. Muzanharo was ferried to Kwekwe General Hospital and later transferred to Gweru Provincial Hospital for further management.
We appeal to members of the public to solve disputes amicably and avoid the use of violence. Common sense should always prevail in determining ways of handling disputes.</blockquote>

Boy (13) Stabs Stepfather For Divorcing Mum

Exiled former minister Saviour Kasukuwere’s daughter, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Natasha_Lucian_Nyasha_Kasukuwere">Natasha Lucian Nyasha</a> is divorcing her husband, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Shingirai_David_Zinyemba">Shingirai David Zinyemba</a>.
Natasha and Shingirai were married in terms of the Marriage Act Chapter 5:11 on December 6 2019 and the marriage still subsists. Natasha told the court that there was no hope to reconcile. She said:
<blockquote>The marriage between the parties has broken down irretrievably to such an extent that the parties can no longer live together as husband and wife more particularly in that the plaintiff and defendant have irreconcilable differences which are incapable of resolution.
The plaintiff has lost love and affection towards the defendant and the parties have been living separately and have not shared the matrimonial bed since March 2021.
The defendant has specifically told the plaintiff that he has grown out of the marital union and he does not wish to continue forcing the relationship.</blockquote>
Natasha went on to say that each party has got the capacity to take care of itself and to that end, the issues of maintenance did not arise.
She also asked to be awarded the couple’s Mercedes Benz GL350d and a chandelier, art pieces, utensils and household furniture currently in their kitchen, dining room, lounge.
The matter was then set down for hearing on an unopposed roll on April 14 2021.
A court ruling is pending.

Kasukuwere's Daughter Divorces Husband After One Year Of Marriage

Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa, a prominent TV and radio personality, who is a daughter to former health minister David Parirenyatwa, is divorcing her husband of seven years, Tendai Basil Mafara.
Ruvheneko has filed for divorce through the High Court stating that she has not been living with Mafara since 2016.
She told the court that she and her estranged husband have lost love for each other and there were no prospects of reconciliation. She said:
<blockquote>I married defendant out of community of property and according to the matrimonial laws of Zimbabwe in Harare on the 19th of April 2014 and this marriage subsists.
My marriage relationship with defendant has irretrievably broken down to the extent that there is no reasonable prospect of the restoration between us of a normal marriage relationship.
Defendant and I have been unable to maintain common interests or a loving relationship as should subsist between husband and wife and defendant and l have been living apart since October 2016 and have no intentions of resuming cohabitation with each other.
This is confirmed by defendant who signed an affidavit of waiver consenting to the divorce.</blockquote>
While according to court papers the parties also agreed that each will retain some matrimonial assets in their respective names, Ruvheneko said she wanted possession of the couple’s Mercedes Benz ML 350.
Ruvheneko and her estranged husband did not have any children together during the subsistence of their marriage.
The summons was filed on March 31, 2021, and set down for hearing on April 15.
Mafara did not oppose the summons.

Ruvheneko Leaves Husband Of Seven Years

Florence Ziyambi, the estranged wife of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, has accused the Cabinet minister of engaging in an extra-marital relationship with an official from the Sheriff’s office.
Florence alleged that Minister Ziyambi has been using her lover to falsify information on return of services in the couple’s on-going divorce matter.
She said Ziyambi was lying before the court to please his mistress as he was fond of embarrassing her [Florence].
Florence made the remarks in her opposing founding affidavit after Ziyambi approached the High Court seeking leave to serve her with divorce summons through publication in local newspapers.
In his application before the High Court, Ziyambi argued that he had attempted several times to serve the divorce summons to Florence, in vain.
High Court judge Justice Jacob Manzunzu granted Ziyambi’s application on 2 November 2020 and allowed him to serve the divorce summons through the newspapers.

A Mutare woman who was allegedly divorced by her husband because of her “obsession” with an extravagant lifestyle has demanded 160 litres of fuel as part of her nine-year-old son’s monthly maintenance.
Victoria Manyange told the court that her estranged husband, Mirai Manyange, used to fill her Mercedes Benz twice in a month and she wants to maintain that lifestyle.
She also said Mirai is a co-owner of a fuel station as a silent partner in the company and therefore it would be difficult to prove his proprietorship. She said:
<blockquote>We are used to luxurious life and we are entitled to that kind of life regardless of the fact that we are no longer together. Our lifestyle should not change.
I used to get more than two full tanks a month from him. I am actually being lenient with him.</blockquote>
Mirai, however, denied that he owns the fuel service station in Marondera, saying he is employed by his friend as a manager.
In her initial maintenance application, Victoria had demanded US$600 as monthly maintenance for her son but was granted US$100 which Mirai said he could afford to pay.
She said some of the money will be used for WiFi, DStv subscription and her son’s swimming and tennis sessions.

Mutare Woman Demands Fuel As Maintenance

An opinionist writing for the ZimMorning Post says women are being left vulnerable as divorce cases go up. The opinionist shared 2 cases of some divorced women he spoke to and wrote the following opinion piece:
<blockquote>Multiple divorce cases that have thronged Zimbabwe in recent years have caused a spike in the rate of prostitution, particularly among women.
Divorced women have mostly fallen victim to economic marginalisation.
Normally, when a couple divorces, their children are left in the care of by their mothers, who more often than not may find it difficult to fend for the children, thereby being forced into prostitution.
After the couples divorce, because of unfavourable economic conditions, they may end up paying very little towards the upkeep of their children, with many of them unemployed due to the current economic disaster the country is going through.
Chipo Madziri (not her real name) says she did not venture into prostitution by choice but because she and her three daughters from the former marriage had found themselves without the economic muscle to survive.
“I decided to become a sex worker after my husband left me with the children for another,” she said.
Chipo is now operating as a sex worker at a popular night spot in Dzivarasekwa, Harare.
“After I and my husband separated, I became vulnerable and could not pay rentals since I had no other means of generating income,” she added.
Like many divorced women, Chipo approached the maintenance court where she was awarded ZWL350.00 for the upkeep of the three children as the husband did not earn much as a security guard.
According to Chipo, the maintenance money was not enough to take care of the rentals, clothing, school fees and food for the three children.
“After I was evicted from where I was staying for failure to pay rentals, I went on to stay with my friend who was into prostitution,” she said.
Chipo also had this to say: “Observing how my friend was surviving through prostitution, I decided to join her. The ‘bar’ became my new way of life.”
Prostitution is generally viewed as a dangerous profession as it is usually associated with certain risks, among them physical assults by drunken clients, including the risk of contracting the deadly HIV and Aids disease and other sexually transmitted infections.
“In this line of work, I have to be extra careful everyday if I am to continue to look after my children because there are a lot of risks associated with it,” Chipo says.
Even at the rate at which sex workers get attacked and sometimes brutally murdered, Chipo still has no choice but to continue to gamble with life as she has the welfare of her children to think about.
“If it was not for the children, I would not have found me dicing with my own prostituting.
“I encounter a lot of problems in this trade, including sleeping around with everyone who comes up with money,” she added.
In Zimbabwe, prostitution has become the plight of so many women in economically marginalised areas, in particular those who go through divorce and are left in the care of the children.
Stella Chingwe (also not her real name), a divorcee and mother of two who plies in vegetables in Dzivarasekwa, said life was difficult for her and the children as money granted her by maintenance court to look after the children following the divorce was much too little for their upkeep.
“The worsening economic conditions in the country mean I cannot find a job.
“I am also not adequately educated so that I can get an opportunity for a job where education is the requirement.
“My only other option is to vend for my children,” she said.
Chingwe added: “Vending has also never been easy as we are constantly chased by the municipal police, who say we are not selling at designated points.”
Zimbabwe has seen an increase in divorce cases, with most men being the ones to initiate divorce proceedings. Statistics from civil courts indicate an increase in the number of divorce cases.
Social scientists and other experts have attributed this development to the general erosion of cultural values due to urban migration, domestic violence, adultery and other social ills.
According to the Zimbabwe Labour Committee 2020, more than half of the adult population in Zimbabwe earns less than US$35 per month, which is not enough to cater for a family of four as economic challenges persist in the country.
Single motherhood is a worldwide issue; research shows that there are about 10 million single mothers in the world today.</blockquote>

OPINION: Women Mostly Affected By Divorce

Retired High Court judge, Justice Lawrence Kamocha said that newlywed and fairly young couples were dominating in divorce cases.
This is attributable to the economic challenges in the country, which have forced couples to live separately, thus pushing them into infidelity.
Justice Kamocha also opined that interference by parents is another cause of the high divorce rate among newly-weds. He said:
<blockquote>You also have family-related issues such as young couples who would not have been weaned off by their parents. Parents should let their children run their families and learn from each other so that they don’t rely too much on them.
Once a child is married, he or she must be weaned off and parents should let them start their home independently without any form of interference. They should just offer them guidance.</blockquote>
A cleric, Bishop <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Johannes_Ndanga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Johannes Ndanga</a>, the president of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Apostolic_Churches_Council_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe</a>, said most family disputes revolve around financial issues.

In her divorce papers filed at the High Court, Samantha stated that the relationship had irretrievably broken down and that there are no prospects of restoration of a normal marriage relationship. She said:
<blockquote>There are no prospects of restoration of a normal marriage relationship, more particularly in that: the parties have lost love and affection for each other, the parties have not lived together as husband and wife for a continuous period exceeding 24 months.
It would be fair and equitable, in the event that this honourable court grants a decree of divorce, that the immovable property be sold and the proceeds are divided with each party being awarded 50 per cent of the net proceeds. Either party would be free to buy the other out …</blockquote>
The couple tied the knot eight years ago under the Marriage Act (Chapter 5:11) and they have two children.
Meanwhile, Nengomasha has not yet responded to the divorce summons.

Oliver Mtukudzi's Daughter Divorces Ex-football Star

Rebecca Matangaidze (nee Chimbera) has filed to divorce his husband, Tapiwa Matangaidze, claiming that the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Marriage" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">marriage</a> has irretrievably broken down.
The two, who have been married for 24 years, have come up with a consent paper, but the court had raised a query regarding the sale of their matrimonial house and use of their farm.
The estranged couple had already agreed that Rebecca will be awarded custody of their two minor children and that Matangaidze will have access to the children on alternative holidays, weekends and on special occasions.
The Daily News furthers reports that Matangaidze will contribute towards the maintenance of the two children in the sum of $500 per month for each child and $500 towards Rebecca’s maintenance.

Former Minister Divorces Wife Of 24 Years

A losing presidential candidate in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_2018_Harmonised_Elections" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">2018 harmonised elections</a>, Joseph Makamba Busha, is involved in a divorce wrangle with his South African wife.
Busha owns a company called JM BUSHA Investment Group (Pty) Ltd which reportedly manages over R5 billion in retirement funds and was ordered by North Gauteng <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/High_Court_of_Zimbabwe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">High Court</a> judge to pay his wife, Nomakhwezi, R30,000 monthly maintenance pending a report by a family lawyer on child access rights and custody of their three children. Nomakhwezi alleged that Busha cut off their Wifi and Dstv:
<blockquote>Since he cut us off, it has been very tough. I had to seek relief from back home in KwaZulu-Natal even though he was still buying a few items for the kids. I have been a stay-at-home mom with the children.</blockquote>
Nomakhwezi is demanding R14,000 for food, R6,000 for entertainment, R4,700 for a domestic worker, R10,000 for clothing, beauty and haircare (R4,000), cellphone and landline (R1,000), data (R1,000), gym (R800), petrol (R3,000), magazines and periodicals (R500), parking (R300) and medical aid (R8,000) for a total of R69,000.
Busha is the leader of FreeZim Congress party and came fourth in the 2018 presidential polls behind Emmerson Mnangagwa, Nelson Chamisa, and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thokozani_Khupe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Thokozani Khupe</a> with 17,566 votes.

Losing Presidential Candidate In Divorce Wrangle With South African Wife

Founder of the Zimbabwe Assemblies of God (ZAOGA) Forward in Faith (FIF), Ezekiel Guti’s daughter Ethanim, is involved in a divorce wrangle with her estranged husband, Lindsay Nyajeka.
It has been revealed that Ethanim Perfect Munamato Nyajeka (nee Guti), who is married to Lindsay Nyajeka, last year instituted divorce proceedings saying their marriage had irretrievably broken down. She is also seeking to be awarded full custody of their two minor children.
After initially consenting to the settlement, Nyajeka changed his stance, claiming that he was being pressurised by third parties to sign the papers.
He revealed that his mother-in-law, Eunor Guti recorded a video which was delivered to him, warning him to sign the papers or risk being sent to jail.
In his amended plea, Nyajeka claimed that he was concerned about their children’s safety if they were left in his wife’s custody. He said:
<blockquote>The respondent (Ethanim) is staying with her parents and I fear for the minor children as there is a history of physical and sexual abuse done but concealed by relatives.</blockquote>
However, Ethanim said that Nyajeka initially admitted that their marriage was over and that there was no more affection between the parties consenting to have the divorce granted. His change of plea was meant to prolong matters, she argued.

ZAOGA Founder, Guti's Daughter In Divorce Wrangle

Former Warriors striker, Shingi Kaondera is suing his former wife, Mary Chiwenga, for irregular divorce after she used forged documents to terminate their marriage.
Mary, a former model, divorced the former Darryn Tornadoes striker and married Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.
Kaondera is demanding US$700,000 from Mary, accusing her of “grabbing” all their matrimonial property and impoverishing him.
Through his lawyers, Kashangura Law Chambers, Kaondera revealed that his marriage to Mary was dissolved by a decree of divorce granted by the High Court on May 19, 2011.
Kaondera filed papers on July 15, arguing that Mary never served him with the summons as required by the rules of court. His lawyers said:
<blockquote>Plaintiff (Kaondera) was not in the country but was in Cyprus where he was a professional footballer at the relevant time.
Mary fraudulently caused a return of service to be issued by the deputy sheriff at Harare, falsely claiming that plaintiff had been personally served with the summons on June 22, 2010, at Harare.
Further to that, the defendant (Mary) also fraudulently issued with the honourable court a consent paper dated July 7, 2010, wherein the plaintiff’s signature was forged. Plaintiff never entered into a consent paper with the defendant regarding the divorce proceedings under HC 3805/10.
… As a result of the irregular and fraudulent obtaining of a divorce order by the defendant, the plaintiff was seriously prejudiced in that the defendant remained with all the immovable and movable properties that the parties had acquired during the subsistence of the marriage.
… As a direct result of the defendant’s fraud, plaintiff has been impoverished as the defendant unjustly grabbed all the matrimonial assets that the parties had acquired together contrary to the laws of Zimbabwe.
Wherefore plaintiff prays for an order that the defendant is ordered to pay damages to the plaintiff in the sum of US$700,000 as well as plaintiff’s costs of suit on a higher scale.
Mary has not yet responded to the summons.</blockquote>

TV personality, Oscar Pambuka’s wife of six years Nyasha Makota has filed for divorce.
Makota argues that her marriage with Pambuka has broken down to such an extent that there was no prospect of restoration of a normal relationship. According to court papers, the two got married on June 21, 2013 in Harare under the Marriage Act (Chapter 5:11) and their marriage was blessed with two children. Nyasha wants custody of the children with Pambuka enjoying reasonable access to them every weekend. She wants Pambuka to pay US$150 per child for maintenance while she covers school fees.
The matter is pending.

Socialite Pokello Nare has filed a notice of opposition after she was served with divorce summons by her husband of three years, Ghanaian Elikem Elikem Kumordzie. Though his lawyers, Mahuni Gidiri Law Chambers, Elikem told the High Court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down such that there are no prospects for reconciliation. He also offered to pay maintenance of $500 per month for the upkeep of the couple’s minor child and asked for reasonable access to the child.
Part of Elikem’s court papers read,

Pokello Files Notice Of Opposition To Elikem's Divorce Petition

Ghanaian Elikem Kumordzie has filed for divorce from wife of three years, socialite Pokello Nare. Though his lawyers, Mahuni Gidiri Law Chambers, Elikem told the High Court that the marriage has irretrievably broken down such that there are no prospects for reconciliation. Part of Elikem’s court papers read,

Elikem Sues For Divorce, Offers To Pay $500 Maintenance

Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) television presenter Jefferson Muserera and his wife Melisa Tendai Muserera (nee Mudzi) are set to part ways after 10 years of marriage over irreconcilable differences.
In January this year, Melisa filed divorce papers at the High Court claiming their marriage had irretrievably broken down. On May 10 this year, Melisa filed her affidavit of evidence claiming they had resolved to divorce through consent. In response, Muserera said he had not agreed to the divorce and urged the court to consider their consent papers. The matter is yet to be set down for hearing.
Melisa wants the court to grant her custody to their minor child born in 2009 and that Muserera be given reasonable rights of access. She also wants the ZBC TV presenter to pay $100 maintenance for the child’s upkeep and that the amount be reviewed after three years.
