Zimbabweans living in South Africa want to be represented in Parliament, arguing that they contribute immensely to economic development through remittances.
This call comes as the Zimbabwean consulate in South Africa has issued a public notice for a final call for Zimbabweans in the neighbouring country to submit their input for the review of the 2016 National Diaspora Policy by May 17, 2024.
The review of the 2016 National Diaspora Policy is scheduled to begin during the week of June 17 to 21, 2024.
In an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zimbabweans-in-sa-push-for-parliamentary-representation/">CITE</a>, the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Community in South Africa, Ngqabutho Nicholas Mabhena, said:

Last year or the year before, we made our submissions towards the National Diaspora Policy and asked for parliamentary representation.
Given the number of Zimbabweans in South Africa who contribute to the economy in Zimbabwe through remittances and purchasing building materials, which boosts the construction industry and creates employment, we said there is no proper linkage between the diaspora community and Zimbabwe at a legislative level.

Mabhena stated that people in the Diaspora must be personally represented since the embassy or ambassador represents the president of the home country in the host country. He said:

Therefore, with a huge population of Zimbabweans in South Africa, we felt there was a need to have one of them sitting in the National Assembly as a diaspora MP.
Having legislative representation will enable Zimbabweans in the diaspora to contribute through their representative in Parliament regarding legislative discussions…
Measures on trade or imports affect the Diaspora community because we import goods from South Africa to Zimbabwe. We felt there was a need for the Diaspora to be represented in Parliament.

Mabhena argued that if the government can allocate quota seats for women and youth, “surely they can do so for its citizens based abroad.” He added:

We said if you have a quota for women and youth in the Zimbabwean Parliament, it is also possible to have the Diasporans elect one of their own to represent them in the National Assembly.
While we recognise the embassy and the consulate, these arms at a legislative level don’t represent the Diaspora because the embassy represents the president.

Last week, the Zimbabwe Consulate in Johannesburg, South Africa, extended an invitation to Zimbabweans residing in South Africa, urging them to contribute their input to the review of the 2016 National Diaspora Policy. It said:

Zimbabwean Expatriates In South Africa Want Representation In Parliament

Two videos of a bullying attack on a boy identified as Zimbabwean in the UK has gone viral on social media. The bullying incident itself is said to have happened this week, in a place called Carlisle, Cumbria in the UK. 
In the two videos that were <a href="https://twitter.com/Oluomoofderby/status/1768752973042037239/">posted on Twitter</a>, a white boy rushes to the Zimbabwean boy and punches him several times, pushes him, and then asks him “Get on your knees and kiss my shoes”.
The visibly frightened victim gives in.

As the incident happens it seems there are several onlookers commenting and some of them laughing. It is not clear who recorded the video. The bully was not in school uniform so it is also unclear if he is a student at the same school as the Zimbabwean boy.
One source has told Pindula that he’s familiar with people known to the boy and that they are Zimbabwean. He also said that people close to the situation have suggested that the boy has always been bullied at school because of his visibly strong Zimbabwean accent.
<h2>Arrest of the bully</h2>

<h2>Racism or just Bullying?</h2>
As the video circulated, there have been arguments on social media with some claiming it’s just regular bullying, while others said it’s a race issue.
The bully is a white boy. The Zimbabwean victim is an African.
The Twitter user who posted the videos, Olumo of Derby, commented:

“Racism in the UK is getting worse everyday. A black child was racially abused and beaten up today at St John Henry Newman Catholic School in Carlisle. Are black people not safe in Carlisle?”
</blockquote>
Another user commented:
<blockquote>
Was this racially motivated or was it just a horrible bully picking on a class mate? I see many videos of black kids beating up white kids, I never immediately jump to racism.
</blockquote>
And another who claims to live in Carlisle posted:

I live in Carlisle and have done my whole life. I one hundred percent believe that this is racist. Carlisle is stuck in the 70s with regards to race, gender equality and so on. I feel awful for this boy. But almost worse for the bully because his parents are poisoning him.

There has been increased migration of Zimbabweans to the UK since the 2000, with many seeking greener pastures. Zimbabwe has seen at least 2 prolonged periods of hyperinflation and is currently in the middle of one. Professionals in the health sector have migrated the most in recent years especially following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The opposition ZAPU party has demanded that Zimbabweans living abroad should be allowed to vote as their remittances back home are helping to keep the country economically afloat.
ZAPU national organiser Ndodana Moyo told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zimbabweans-in-the-diaspora-must-be-allowed-to-vote-zapu/">CITE</a> that Section 67 of Zimbabwe’s constitution grants the right to vote to all Zimbabweans, including those living in the diaspora.
He said even those Zimbabweans living in South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are not able to return home to vote due to their work circumstances. Said Moyo:

They have a right to choose which president they want to lead them. It is important to appreciate people in the diaspora, who are sending their remittances to this country.
When you go to Mukuru, Western Union, and other platforms daily, people queue there daily for money sent by relatives in the diaspora.

He argued that Zimbabweans abroad were equally paying taxes to the government via their remittances and should therefore be allowed to partake in civic processes. Moyo said:

The government wants their money but not their vote, how does it work? The Diaspora is a special component of Zimbabwe, which sends money to assist in the development of their families and Zimbabwe as a whole, so they deserve and should have a right to shape the course of this country.
Every Zimbabwean who wishes to vote and participate in the polls must do so including those in the diaspora.

Moyo said the Electoral Amendment Bill should not be about “trivial” issues such as whether people can use their driver’s license to vote or not, but on important issues such as the diaspora vote among others.

CBZ Offers Diaspora Mortgages. (PDF Download)

This week <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Operation_Dudula">Operation Dudula</a> announced its intention to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/operation-dudula-plans-to-camp-outside-gauteng-schools/">camp outside schools in Gauteng</a> to prevent undocumented foreign children and teachers from accessing education in the country.
The targeting brought to light the typical problems faced by foreigners in the country, particularly Zimbabweans.
Many Zimbabweans in South Africa are economic migrants who have left their country in search of better opportunities but often find themselves living in poverty and facing discrimination in the labor market. 
The following is a list of the things the Zimbabwean diaspora in South Africa, especially the undocumented ones, have to deal with:
<h2>Xenophobia</h2>
Zimbabweans, along with other African immigrants, have been targeted in violent attacks in South Africa in the past. In recent memory is the April 2022 brutal killing of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwean-man-brutally-murdered-by-vigilantes-in-sa-was-not-a-criminal/">Elvis Nyathi</a> who was murdered simply for having attempted to flee from a vigilante mob.
Analysts have however often highlighted that it’s not necessarily Xenophobia (a dislike of or prejudice against foreigners) but Afrophobia (a dislike of black Africans) as evidence suggests that non-African foreigners are tolerated by the locals.
<h2>Economic struggles</h2>
Many Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa are underemployed or unemployed and struggle to make a living. Those without legal documents are often exploited by employers who take advantage of their illegal status.
Those that managed to get some employment also live in fear of losing their jobs if authorities and vigilante groups like Operation Dudula push for the locals to be given the jobs instead.
In 2022 one of the actions of Operation Dudula was to move from company to company searching out foreigners and demanding that the employers terminate their contracts and offer the jobs to locals instead.
<h2>Legal issues</h2>
Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa often face difficulties obtaining legal documentation, such as work permits, which can make it harder for them to find employment or access services.
Many are undocumented and may be hesitant to seek legal help for fear of being discovered and deported. Even those who do have documentation may struggle to navigate the legal system and understand their rights, due to language barriers and cultural differences.
Additionally, many Zimbabweans in South Africa may not have the financial resources to afford legal representation, which can make it difficult for them to assert their rights or seek justice in cases of discrimination or abuse.
This lack of access to legal support and protection can leave them vulnerable to exploitation and abuse, and can make it difficult for them to resolve disputes or seek remedies for wrongful treatment.
<h2>Discrimination</h2>
Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa may face discrimination based on their nationality, which can make it more difficult for them to access services or find employment.
Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa may face challenges in accessing basic services like healthcare, education and housing due to a lack of legal documents.
For those that eventually get permanent residence or citizenship, their ID cards are distinctly different from local South Africans making it easy for public service providers, employers, and potential clients to discriminate against them.
In 2022, a South African health official was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-doctor-tells-zimbabweans-to-get-medical-treatment-in-zimbabwe/">filmed accusing a sick Zimbabwean woman on a hospital bed</a> that people like her were unfairly burdening the South African healthcare system.
<h2>Mental Health and Homesickness</h2>
Many Zimbabwean immigrants in South Africa are separated from their families and communities, which can be emotionally difficult. Many therefore wish they could return home but find it hard to restart a life in Zimbabwe after spending a considerable amount of time in South Africa.
Another cause of stress for undocumented Zimbabweans is living in fear of arrest and deportation.
In addition, newly arrived Zimbabweans especially may face difficulty navigating the cultural and language differences between Zimbabwe and South Africa.
<h2>Targeting by criminals</h2>
One serious issue is that of being targeted by criminals due to perceptions of being vulnerable.
Zimbabweans in South Africa may be seen as easy targets for crime because they are often living in poverty and may be unfamiliar with the area and its dangers.
Additionally, they may be reluctant to report crimes to the police due to fear of deportation or mistrust of the authorities. This can make them more susceptible to crimes such as theft, mugging, and extortion. It can also make them more vulnerable to human trafficking, as they may be lured by false promises of work and then forced into labor or prostitution.

The Difficult Life Of Zimbabwean Immigrants In South Africa

The scheduled <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/there-will-be-no-forever-extensions-for-zeps-motsoaledi/">mass deportation of Zimbabweans living in South Africa in June 2023</a> is anticipated to increase pressure on the infrastructure of this country.
According to the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Statistics_Agency_(ZIMSTAT)">Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT)</a>, South Africa is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimstat-says-south-africa-botswana-and-uk-are-the-major-destinations-for-zimbabweans/">officially home to 773 246 Zimbabweans</a> although some estimates put the figure at around three million.
The mass deportation would become a burden to the already failing infrastructure such as roads, electricity and the health sector, The NewsHawks reported quoting economic analyst <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Prosper_Chitambara">Prosper Chitambara</a>. He is cited as saying:

The government then needs to enhance spending on hard infrastructure for that infrastructure to be able to support the influx of the Zimbabweans that are coming back from South Africa.
Social protection will become critical because most of them will not be able to find meaningful employment so they don’t find themselves living in absolute poverty.
</blockquote>
<h2>Some Context:</h2>
The South African government is scheduled to depart thousands of Zimbabweans after 30 June 2023 following the termination of Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEPs). 
The ZEP programme began when the South African government granted “special dispensation” for Zimbabweans who were in the country illegally, many of them having fled violence and instability in Zimbabwe. 
The South African government replaced Special Dispensation for Zimbabweans with Zimbabwean Special Permits in 2014; then it replaced Zimbabwean Special Permits with ZEPs in 2017.
ZEP holders who are unable to secure a different visa after the grace period elapses will be deported and will pile pressure on the ailing infrastructure.
While the Zimbabwean government says it is ready for mass deportation, Political analyst Rejoice Ngwenya saysZimbabwe does not have the capacity to cater for  Zimbabweans living in South Africa as it is struggling to cater for 1 million jobless graduates in Zimbabwe.

Mass Deportation Of Zimbabweans In South Africa Will Increase Pressure On Zimbabwe - Analysts

Seven Zimbabweans facing rhino poaching charges in South Africa escaped from the Grahamstown Correctional Facility in Eastern Cape yesterday.
South Africa’s Department of Correctional Services (DCS) spokesperson Singabakho Nxumalo confirmed the escape in a statement, saying a manhunt has since been launched.
The seven were identified as;

1). Nhamo Muyambo, 
2). Francis Chitho, 
3). Trymore Chauke, 
4). Lubuyo September, 
5). Abraham Moyane, 
6). Simba Masinge and 
7). Bennet Kwarrile.
</blockquote>
Reads the statement released by Singabakho Nxumalo:
<blockquote>
The DCS, working with the South African Police Services has launched a manhunt following the escape of seven remand detainees at Grahamstown Correctional Facility in Makhanda in the early hours of October 18. Investigations have been instituted and the circumstances relating to the escape will be confirmed in due course.
</blockquote>
Nxumalo also said that the escapees are considered dangerous and should not be confronted if spotted urging members of the public to approach the nearest police station if they have information that can lead to the apprehension of the escapees.
He added that the images of the escapees would be shared during the course of the day.

South Africa: 7 Zimbabweans Escape From Prison

A Zambian national and his Zimbabwean counterpart have been jailed in the United Kingdom after they were convicted of fraud at Durham Crown Court, United Kingdom earlier this year, Northern Echo reported.
The two leading members of the gang, Raphael Munemo and Tendai Dlamini, who both have previous convictions for mail theft, denied charges of conspiracy to defraud and fraud, but were found guilty following a trial in February.
Munemo, (34), a Zambian national living in Nottingham, received a three-year prison sentence, and his 41-year-old co-accused, a Zimbabwean refugee, of Wakefield, West Yorkshire, was given a one-year prison term.
Their three accomplices, all Zimbabwean nationals living in the UK, each admitted conspiracy to defraud at an earlier plea hearing. The trio were sentenced as follows:

i). Vincent Zwoushe-Zhanje, 32, of Banbridge, County Down, in Northern Ireland, was given a two-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, with 250-hour unpaid work order and 30 probation-led rehabilitation days.
ii). Gray Gwewo, 28, from Leeds, and 28-year-old Ndhlovu, of Bedford, each received 14-month prison sentences, also suspended for two years. Both were also ordered to perform 180 hours of unpaid work and take part in 30 rehabilitation days with the Probation Service.
</blockquote>
Munemo and Dlamini appeared again at the court on Friday September 30, via video link from HMPs Northumberland and Leeds, respectively.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
The court heard the accused were intercepting postal deliveries to remote addresses, many of them farms, with exterior mailboxes.
Letters would be removed enabling gang members to use the identities of the victims to take out credit, while newly dispatched debit cards, containing PIN details, were removed and used.
Available credit illegally obtained was often transferred onto high-value gift cards, as bank cards could be stopped at short notice.
The court was told the value of credit obtained by the gang was estimated to be in the region of £164,000, not all of which was used, while the trial judge said that figure may only be, “the tip of the iceberg.”
Victims were left shocked when their own genuine transactions were cancelled, while their credit ratings were also affected, although the banks involved eventually largely withstood the losses.
Investigators from the North East Regional Special Operations Unit (NERSOU) established a hierarchy within the gang.
<h2>Benefits and Confiscation:
</h2>
Tom Bennett, for Zwoushe-Zhanje, said it was agreed he benefited by £37 123 from his involvement in the fraudulent activity, but the available amount for confiscation is just £150.
He said the £150 was from a now-closed Bitcoin account in the defendant’s name.
Recorder Alex Menary, therefore, ordered the confiscation of the £150, to be paid within three months, with seven days in prison in default.

South Africa’s Social Development Minister and chairperson of the ANC’s international relations subcommittee, Lindiwe Zulu has said Zimbabweans residing in that country should be in their home country.
The senior ruling African National Congress (ANC) party official has added that all nations need to take responsibility for their citizens.
She made the remarks on Monday during a discussion on party policy documents. Zulu was reported as saying by jacarandafm.com:

When it comes to the issue of Home Affairs, and you were saying maybe we are sending Zimbabweans back to starve, as the African National Congress we believe that all countries need to take responsibility of their citizens. 
First and foremost, we take responsibility of our citizens, we make sure that despite the challenges that we have of poverty, unemployment and inequality, we shouldn’t be having South Africans leaving South Africa with almost nothing,
… leaving South Africa and going to neighbouring countries to go and look for greener pastures when they aren’t even that much of the greener pastures that we can talk about.

South Africa: Minister Zulu Says Zimbabweans Should Be In Their Country

A Dubai-based Zimbabwean businesswoman, Hanna Mutsenhu, has asked President Emmerson Mnangagwa to make it mandatory for all Zimbabwean citizens living abroad to pay a US$50 fee when they visit Zimbabwe.
Mutsenhu said that she has been in the United Arab Emirates for six years and runs a nursery in Dubai.
She said the US$50 contribution by every diasporan whenever they visit Zimbabwe will be used to develop the country.
Mutsenhu made the remarks during an interface with Mnangagwa on the sidelines of the World Expo being held in Dubai. She said:

Why can we not engage all diasporans when they are coming back home to contribute a certain amount on entry, for example, US$50.
Some countries are doing that; that will mean when I come back home I should leave US$50. It needs accountability towards the development of Zimbabwe.
You can take into consideration countries like the Philippines. When one goes back home they have to contribute something.

Mutsenhu’s comments sparked debate on social media with critics arguing that she was offside as the Government has refused to recognise diasporans’ right to vote in national elections even though they contribute to the country’s economy through remittances.
Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said in 2021, diaspora remittances were more than US$1 billion.

'Returning Diasporans Should Be Levied US$50'

A 28-year-old Zimbabwean national has been handed six life terms and 192 years behind bars by the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria for a string of crimes.
Wellington Kachidza pleaded guilty to 34 counts – six counts of murder, three counts of rape, eight counts of kidnapping, eight counts of extortion, eight counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and being in the country illegally.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Kachidza’s crime spree took place in Pretoria, between January 2018 and December 2019.
Kachidza’s murder victims were men whom he’d lure under the guise of seeking assistance with driving before kidnapping them and demanding ransom money from their families. He would then kill the men after the monies were paid. 
The reported cause of death based on post-mortem for the victims was head injury or trauma to the head. Said NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana:

With the three female victims, he pretended to be offering employment opportunities, he would lure them to a close-by bush or veld, rape them and rob them of their belongings and walk away. Kachidza was arrested on the 15 of January 2020, based on an intelligence-driven operation and was later linked by DNA evidence to the rape counts. He has been in custody since his arrest.

The lead prosecutor in Wellington Kachidza’s case, Prosecutor Adv. Pieter Coetzer argued in court, that the motive behind his crimes was pure greed – and that his evil deeds have had a severe impact, particularly on his rape victims and the families of the men he murdered.

The United Kingdom Parliament has urged the Zimbabwean Government to ensure that all eligible citizens based in the diaspora are allowed to vote in elections.
This follows petitions filed by Zimbabweans based in the diaspora, including by former Ntabazinduna Chief, Felix Nhlanhlayamangwe Ndiweni, requesting to vote in the country’s elections from their host countries.
The issue of the Zimbabwe diaspora vote was raised in the UK parliament by a current member of the House of Lords, the Baroness Lister of Burtersett CBE, Ruth Margot Aline Lister.
The question for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, UIN HL5134, was tabled on 5 January 2022. She said:

Reform Electoral Laws, UK Parliament Tells Zimbabwe

A ZANU PF youth leader from Masvingo Province said the ruling party does not need the votes of Zimbabweans living and working in the Diaspora in the 2023 elections as it is content with the local votes.
Charles Munganasa, a ZANU PF Masvingo youth league executive member, said the national Constitution does not provide for Zimbabweans abroad to vote in local elections from their host countries.
Munganasa was speaking during a Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) discussion held in Masvingo city on the state of preparedness by political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections.
Responding to an MDC Alliance member and former Masvingo Central legislator, Jeffreyson Chitando, who has asked whether the ruling party was considering citizens living abroad to vote in the next harmonised elections during the question and answer segment, Munganasa said:

ZANU PF is a party that respects the Constitution of Zimbabwe. We move with what is in the Constitution of the country. It is up to you (MDC Alliance) because you are the ones who want the Diaspora vote.
The people who are voting for us, the people who are in rural areas, the people who are in cities, we are content with those people. We have not yet got to the time to say ZANU PF we need the Diaspora vote.
There are also other African countries that are having very successful elections without the Diaspora vote. Maybe, if you think that will add to your numbers, you can advocate for that.

ZANU PF has previously said it will only consider giving Zimbabweans in the diaspora the right to vote if western powers remove the targeted sanctions that they imposed on Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweans In The Diaspora Urged To Apply For Jobs Back Home

A Zimbabwean illegal immigrant in the UK was arrested for getting a job with a fake residence permit.
The immigrant, Grace Jinjika, was this week (October 2019) tried and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after she pleaded guilty to one count of fraud and one of ‘having an identity document with improper intention’.
Said a judge during her sentencing:
<blockquote>“In this case I have heard that you worked caring for other people and you were considered to be an extremely good worker.
Nonetheless as you know you should not have been here, you should have not have been taking these jobs.”</blockquote>
Jinkika, who has been in the Uk for 20 years, was first jailed in 2015 for fraudulently claiming benefits to the value of about £70,000. She was released in 2018, after which she got a carer’s job using fake papers.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has told Zimbabweans based outside the country that they should come back home if they are interested in voting. The president claimed that the country did not have the resources to allow foreign-based Zimbabweans to vote outside the country. Addressing Zimbabweans in Kigali, Rwanda, Mnangagwa said,
<blockquote>We are not there yet in terms of resources, we do not have the resources to make sure that you vote from where you are. Voting won’t take you 10 minutes, so if you want to vote, just come home and in less than 10 minutes you will have finished voting and go back to your work.</blockquote>
However, this was criticised by MDC-T secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora who said,
<blockquote>That is unfair, resources have to be availed to ensure Zimbabweans outside the country to vote. They are allowed by the Constitution to vote, fortunately, a case has been argued in the courts on the Diaspora vote and we are waiting for a response.
His statements have an effect of influencing the judgment and it also says even if the courts rule that they should vote his government has taken a stance.</blockquote>
The Constitutional Court reserved ruling on a legal challenge to the government’s decision to bar Zimbabweans based outside the country from voting.

Come Back Home If You Want To Vote, We Do Not Have Resources: Mnangagwa Tells Diaspora

In an interview during his tour of Arda Antelope Estate in Maphisa, Matabeleland South, last Friday, Acting President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that Zimbabweans in the diaspora are expected to invest over a billion dollars in three projects.
Mnangagwa said that the deals were a result of an investment conference he spearheaded in South Africa. The projects include a National Railways of Zimbabwe recapitalisation programme, purchase of agricultural equipment and construction of fuel pipelines from Harare to South Africa, Botswana and Zambia.
According Mnangagwa South Africa’s Transnet and the Diaspora Infrastructure Development Group bid $500 million to rehabilitate NRZ. He also said that there is a group of white Zimbabweans based outside the country who want to build a pipeline from Beira to Mutare or from Mutare to Harare, Harare to Botswana and Harare to Lusaka.

Zimbabweans in the diaspora to invest 1 billion dollars in projects

President Robert Mugabe has appealed to skilled Zimbabweans in the diaspora to come back home in order to help rebuild and develop the country. Mugabe even went as far as saying that he was willing to make a plan to ensure that skilled workers were remunerated adequately if they were worried about wages. Speaking at a Zanu PF Youth Interface Rally at Somhlolo Stadium in Lupane, on Friday, Mugabe said:
<blockquote>We have a lot of minerals in Zimbabwe, every province has minerals, gold is in every province and we hope our mines ministry will work hard so that we can explore underneath the ground and our youth can be employed in the process.
We would want blacks to be employers so mining engineers can team up and form their own companies. We have so many skilled Zimbabweans living outside the country and they should come back home and use their skills here so that we help each other to develop our nation.
If their problem is on low wages, we can work a plan and ensure that they are properly remunerated for their skills.</blockquote>

Come back home and help us to develop the country: Mugabe appeals to Zimbabweans abroad

The government has said that it needs to establish the exact number of Zimbabweans in the diaspora in order to maximise remittances. This comes as the government, supported by the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) is woking on creating a Diaspora Policy in order to allow all those people to participate in Zimbabwe’s development. However, a 2010 report by the UNDP put the figure of Zimbabweans outside the country at 3 million.
Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Macro-Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, Dr Judith Kareera said:
<blockquote>We do not actually know how many people are abroad. The figure could have increased and this is what we want to actually establish hence this engagement meeting.
As part of our efforts to lure our citizens living abroad, we are establishing a website that showcases the work that the Diaspora has done in order to acknowledge their efforts
We want to take stock of everything that our citizens are doing out there in the areas of health, education and everything else … and come up with a data base of Zimbabwe Diaspora organizations in order to encourage Diaspora participation in our economy.</blockquote>

More than 3m people are in the diaspora, govt says it needs to maximize remittances

In the first quarter Treasury bulletin released on Thursday, the Ministry of Finance revealed that diaspora remittances had gone down to $180, from $193 million in the corresponding period last year. The Ministry attributed the decline to a depressed global economy. Diaspora remittances are a major source of foreign currency for the country.
Part of the bulletin reads:
<blockquote>The decline in diaspora remittances is partly attributed to the sluggish performance of the global economy as well as errors and omission arising from conduct of remittances through informal channels</blockquote>
However, the Ministry expects the remittances to pick up as it is projecting $1,2 billion in 2017 compared to $870 million in 2016.
