A man who transported 81 goats from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gokwe">Gokwe</a> is counting his losses after the livestock was intercepted at a roadblock in Selous and the Department of Veterinary Services ordered the destruction of all the animals. 
Gokwe is a high-risk zone for foot and mouth disease.

<h2>DESTRUCTION AND DISPOSAL ORDER</h2>
Information at my disposal indicates that on 19 October 2022, Eighty-one (81) goats belonging to Mr Masiya Muteyaunga, ID Number 26-146754)26 were intercepted by members of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">ZRP</a> and Veterinary Services at Selous Roadblock in Chegutu District. The goats were travelling from a high-risk Foot and Mouth disease area of Karombo Village under Chief Chireya, Gokwe. The goats had Police clearance only and no veterinary movement permit. Mr Masiya MUleyatinga, therefore, contravened the Provisions of Animal Health (Movement of animals) Regulation of 1984.
Now, therefore, under and by virtue of powers vested in the Director of Veterinary Services by Section 7, Subsection (3) paragraph (a) of the Animal Health Art (Chapter 19:01) and as read with Section 7, subsection (2) paragraph (a) and (b) of the said Act, the Director orders the destruction of the eighty-one (81) goats and safe disposal of the carcasses. The Provincial Veterinary Officer for Mash West Province or his representative is hereby ordered to destroy the eighty-one (81) goats and ensure safe disposal of carcasses. The destruction and disposal must be witnessed by Police details.

In March this year, the Veterinary Services Department <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/veterinary-services-department-speaks-on-12-cattle-from-gokwe-north-that-were-shot/">gunned down a herd of 12 cattle</a> after crossing a foot and mouth red zone from Gokwe North to Sanyati.
Speaking in an <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/07/13/veterinary-officers-speak-on-death-of-cattle-in-zvimba/">earlier interview with Pindula News</a> back then, Dr Moregood Spargo, district veterinary officer for Zvimba district, said:

FMD (Foot and Mouth Disease) red zones are areas adjacent to national parks. In national parks, there are buffalos which happen to be reservoirs of the virus. There is Chirisa National Park in Gokwe North so there is a possibility that cattle in that area are interacting with buffaloes. Therefore, allowing them to move to other parts of the country increase chances of having the FMD spreading. It’s possible that the cattle killed did not have the FMD but without vetting we could not know that’s why they were killed.

The symptoms of foot and mouths are wounds on the mouth and hooves. Spargo added that it is rare for grownup livestock to die and they usually heal within two weeks.

Veterinary Department Orders Destruction Of 81 Goats Intercepted At A Roadblock

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Lands,_Agriculture,_Water_and_Rural_Resettlement">Veterinary officers</a> have told Pindula News that the Theileriosis, or January Disease, a tick-borne infection has claimed dozens of cattle in Zvimba, Mashonaland West.
Villagers were afraid that their cattle were dying from COVID-19.

This is a huge blow to the national goal of boosting both the dairy and beef industry.
Dr Moregood Spargo, district veterinary officer for Zvimba district, said the disease, which is caused by the brown ear-tick that usually thrives during the rainy season, has seen some farmers losing livestock.
Asked if any action was being taken to assist farmers, Dr Spargo said farmers were being assisted. He added:
<blockquote>_In Winter, cattle are dipped once fortnightly but due to the outbreak of the disease, they are being dipped every week._
_We also have the Presidential Input Scheme that is assisting farmers with tick grease. Farmers in affected areas are set to get another batch of tick grease, 1kg per household._</blockquote>
Dr Spargo also allayed fears others had over the possibility of transmission of the disease to humans. He said:
<blockquote>_Although we do not encourage eating cattle that are dying from any illness, a January Disease is not a zoonotic disease which means it cannot be transmitted to humans._</blockquote>
He added that the challenge they have in addressing the issue was resistance from ignorant farmers who do not want to bring their cattle to the dips. Dr Spargo added:
<blockquote>_Some farmers believe that their cattle are getting the disease from the dips. They have resorted to spraying their cattle at home and that approach is not effective. As a result, cattle continue to die._ 
_We have requested local authorities and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) that we conduct awareness meetings to enlighten farmers on the disease <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/tick-borne-disease-killing-cattle-around-zimbabwe/">that has affected all regions across the country</a>._
_Another challenge, particularly at Zvimba Farm, is the inadequacy of water to put in dips. They have resorted to dipping once fortnightly which is recommended when there is an outbreak._</blockquote>
Dr Spargo also indicated that some farmers are now selling their livestock at very cheap prices as they fear total loss if they die. He added:
<blockquote>_There are fraudulent buyers who misinform farmers that the disease has no cure. This has resulted in farmers selling their cattle at very cheap prices. We visited one farmer who sold his 6 beasts for a song. Once they see symptoms, they sell the cattle because they believe they can’t treat the disease._</blockquote>
He also said the disease can be treated if measures are taken in time.
He said some of the symptoms are froth from the mouth, blood diarrhoea, tears, and swollen lymph nodes behind the ears.

Veterinary Officers Speak On Death Of Cattle In Zvimba

Members of the public have been cautioned about infected beef that is being sold in some butcheries nationwide. Zim Morning Post reports that some butcheries have suspiciously lowered the prices of beef, a development that shocking considering that the economy is hyperinflationary.
The publication further reports that some butcheries buy cheap and ill cattle and then sell the meat to unsuspecting members of the public at a shockingly low price.
The development is worrying considering that there are people who lost lives after contracting some diseases after they ate infected meat.
The executive director of Veterinarians for Livelihood Development Trust Tafara Shumba urged farmers and retailers to strictly adhere to regulations pertaining to the slaughter and consumption of beasts in the country.
Shumba said that it was disturbing that some individuals were putting profit ahead of public safety. He added that deaths registered last year after some people ingested anthrax-infected meat should have knocked sense into those selling infected meat. 

Last year, some farmers lost a considerable number of their cattle to anthrax, tick-borne disease and others and this could be the reason why they are selling their sick cattle at a giveaway price which is irresistible to owners butcheries.

Farmers have expressed hope following the recent rains. Crops and livestock were, in that order, showing signs of moisture stress and dying due to a prolonged dry spell.
Dr Josphat Nyika, the Department of Veterinary Services chief director, has however said farmers should be on guard as the rains are likely to bring more diseases for their livestock. Nyika said:
<blockquote>With these rains, we also expect poverty deaths to decline. However, rains also mean that we should expect more anthrax outbreaks, therefore, farmers should continue to vaccinate their cattle against anthrax.
The department has vaccines to see us through to the second quarter of 2020. On tick-borne diseases, there has been an improvement in the supply of chemicals. Dipping should increase further because the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development has released funds.</blockquote>
Many farmers lost lots of <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/01/18/midlands-lost-6000-cattle-due-to-the-2019-drought-report/">livestock last year due to drought and a number of diseases</a> whilst crop farmers had a poor harvest thereby ushering the country into severe starvation.
There is severe maize shortage in the country, the result of a combination of drought and poor agricultural policies which have depreciated the country’s food production capacity over the past two decades.

More Anthrax Outbreaks Expected Due To Rains - Veterinary Services Department

A village head in Victoria Falls, Mr Jaheliduna Ndlovu of Sidobe village has appealed for an urgent solution as lions have since last month been killing livestock.
Reports suggest that the lions, some of which are collared, have so far killed about 35 cattle and an unquantified number of goats and donkeys. The headman said:
<blockquote>A fortnight ago, lions killed eight cattle in one day and last Monday they killed five belonging to one villager.
Last December they killed 18 cattle from our area and the village head Zikhali’s cattle were attacked in the grazing area.
This is a situation which needs everyone’s input. We once suggested that we set up scout teams that will be stationed in the community to protect livestock, but some stakeholders didn’t buy the idea.</blockquote>
The Herald reports that Monde, Mvuthu, Ndlovu, Mpumelelo, Sidobe and Chikandakubi are some of the most affected villages.
The development comes when the country is already losing a lot of cattle to drought and diseases including anthrax and tick-borne disease.
