<p>The Southern Africa Regional Climate Outlook Forum predicts that Southern Africa will experience at least 13 cyclones this season, higher than the average of nine per season.</p>
<p>The Government of Zimbabwe has allocated ZWL$37 billion for disaster response and management, as the country is expected to be hit by two tropical cyclones during the rainy season. The Department of Civil Protection (DCP) estimates that around 250,000 people are at risk of being affected by adverse weather conditions, including cyclones, floods, landslides, and hailstorms.</p>
<p>Harsh weather conditions have already caused severe damage, affecting 5,000 people, killing 13 people and injuring 16 this year. In the previous year, Southern Africa experienced 11 cyclones, including one that caused significant destruction and displaced over 100,000 people in Mozambique, Malawi, and Madagascar. Responding to questions from <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-cyclones-forecast-250-000-at-risk-experts">The Sunday Mail</a>, the DCP said:</p>

<p><em>Due to increased cyclonic events, the country is likely to experience at least two tropical cyclones that will make landfall during the 2023-2024 rainfall season.</em></p>
<p><em>The impact of extreme weather conditions is estimated to directly and indirectly affect at least 250 000 people and their livelihoods, mainly in landslide- and flood-prone areas.</em></p>
<p><em>So far, at least 5 000 people have been affected, while 13 deaths and 16 injuries caused by extreme weather conditions have been reported.</em></p>

<p>Areas prone to flooding, such as Mbire, Tsholotsho, Muzarabani, Chipinge-Middle Sabi, Chimanimani, and Gokwe North, are put on high alert before the start of the rainy season. However, it is important to note that flash flooding can occur anywhere in the country depending on the intensity of rainfall and the condition of drainage systems. The risk of landslides is particularly high in the Eastern Highlands.</p>
<p>The government has developed a contingency plan to respond quickly to rain-induced disasters, including activating civil protection structures and providing resources to districts. The Meteorological Services Department will continue to monitor the season and provide timely forecasts and alerts to the Department of Civil Protection. </p>

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in collaboration with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued the Zimbabwe Evening Weather Report and Forecast. This report was released at 1600 HRS on Sunday, 13 August 2023, and is valid until Tuesday, 15 August 2023.</p>
<h3>Preamble</h3>
<p>On the morning of Sunday 13 August 2023, most parts of the country experienced very cold and cloudless weather. Some areas, including Matopos, Gweru, Chivhu, Henderson, and Nyanga, reported slight ground frost. However, temperatures gradually increased to the mild and warm range as the day progressed. Patches of clouds were also observed in Harare metropolitan, Mashonaland East, and Manicaland provinces.</p>
<h3>Forecast for Tomorrow, Monday 14 August 2023</h3>
<p>• A cold morning is predicted countrywide on ‘HEROES DAY,’ with the possibility of ground frost in areas like Matopos, Gweru, Chivhu, Henderson, and Nyanga. The day is expected to be mostly sunny, transitioning to warm in the daytime and becoming mild towards the evening. Cold temperatures are anticipated overnight.</p>
<h3>Impacts</h3>
<p>• Cold weather conditions may have health implications for vulnerable individuals and could trigger respiratory-related illnesses such as colds, flu, hay fever, and asthma.</p>
<p>• Cold mornings can affect animals, particularly day-old chicks and animal litter.</p>
<p>• Ground frost can cause damage to crops from within (intra-cellular frost).</p>
<p>• Dry conditions increase the risk of uncontrollable veld fires, with dry vegetation serving as fuel.</p>
<h3>Actions to Take</h3>
<p>• Stay warm and ensure that vulnerable individuals (such as the young, elderly, and those with existing health conditions) are appropriately dressed or covered.</p>
<p>• If using a brazier or fire for warmth, ensure proper ventilation in the room.</p>
<p>• Frost-prone areas may need to implement frost mitigation measures.</p>
<p>• With the high fire-danger season underway, all members of society, particularly farmers, are advised to create fire guards at least 9 meters wide to protect their property.</p>
<p>• Starting uncontrolled outdoor fires is a punishable offence, so exercise caution even when starting controlled fires to safeguard lives and property.</p>
<h3>Weather Outlook for Tuesday 15 August 2023</h3>
<p>On DEFENCE FORCES day, the weather is expected to start cold with clear skies, and ground frost is anticipated in areas like Matopos, Gweru, Chivhu, Henderson, and Nyanga. Temperatures are predicted to gradually rise to the warm range in the afternoon before lowering to mild in the evening.</p>

MSD Forecasts Continued Cold Weather In Zimbabwe Between 13-15 August 2023

<p>The Meteorological Services Department (MSD), in conjunction with the Department of Civil Protection, has issued a weather outlook for Saturday, August 5th, 2023. The forecast indicates that certain regions of the country can anticipate light rainfall.</p>
<p>According to the MSD, apart from isolated showers in Manicaland on Wednesday, most parts of the country experienced cloudy conditions on Thursday. These conditions are expected to persist primarily in the eastern half of the country over the next few days, with slightly warmer weather predicted for the weekend, particularly on Sunday. Reads the outlook:</p>

<p><em>Brief cloudy periods are expected in provinces such as Masvingo, Manicaland, Mashonaland East, Harare Metropolitan and Midlands with light rain in districts such as Beitbridge, Mwenezi, Chiredzi, and Chipinge as well as parts of the Eastern Highlands. All other areas (Matabeleland North and South, Bulawayo Metropolitan, Mashonaland West as well as Mashonaland Central) should be mild for much of the day, but cold overnight with mostly clear skies.</em></p>
