Speaking at the Bursary Induction Programme on Wednesday, Patricia Murambinda, the General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Delta Corporation, urged the students to stay disciplined and resilient when facing challenges. She said:

Delta Corporation says it has spent US$70 million on its projects as it seeks to boost capacity to increase production.
Last week, the company commissioned three projects, which include the Southerton Chibuku Super factory, soft drinks PET line and a high-tech lager beer packaging line.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa officially commissioned the three projects.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony last Thursday, Delta CEO Matlhogonolo Valela said:

Apart from the three new projects that you [President Emmerson Mnangagwa] are commissioning today, I am pleased to advise that we installed yet another line at our subsidiary, AfDIS bringing the total investment in capital expenditure to US$70 million.
These projects, your Excellency, will all be in full production within four months of each other, a record rapid investment programme never experienced before in our business.

President Mnangagwa said the investment by Delta shows business has confidence in the economic policies of his government. He said:

Delta Corporation Injects US$70 Million On Projects

National Breweries (Natbrew), a unit of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Delta_Corporation">Delta Corporation</a>, recorded a 16 per cent decline in its volumes in the year to March 2022, leading to an 18 per cent revenue contraction.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/delta-unit-sees-16pc-decline-in-volumes/">According to The Herald</a>, Natbrew produces, packages and markets traditional sorghum beer products in Zambia. Popular variants of its opaque beer are Chibuku Shake-Shake and Chibuku Super. The company said in a statement accompanying the results:

Volume performance in the current year was affected by the decline of informal exports of Chibuku Super, the increase in excise and general product prices and Covid-19 restrictions which affected product availability in the market.
</blockquote>
Natbrew said it will continue to intensify efforts to drive volume growth by offering quality and competitively priced products to its consumers.
In the period under review, the company’s revenue declined from US$16.76 million in 2020 to US$13.55 million in 2021. 
The decline was attributed to the increased raw material prices in the second half of the year, limited access to the market as a result of COVID-19-induced lockdowns and the resurgence of competition from other bulk beer offerings that do not comply with excise/VAT.
The company ended the year with an operational loss of US$5 million, compared to US$9.8 million the previous year. Similarly, the company reported a loss after tax of US$7 million and a loss per share of US$0.11, compared to US$11.29 million and US$0.11 the previous year.

Delta's Volumes Decline Due To Increase In Excise Duty, Inflation

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of listed beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation, Pearson Gowero has stepped down on retirement after spending over two decades with the group.
Matlhogonolo Valela a chartered accountant by profession who has been the group finance director since July 2011 will take over from Gowero with effect from 1 July 2021.
However, he will now immediately assume the post of chief operating officer to ensure a seamless transition.
Speaking on Gowero’s retirement, the group’s chairperson Canaan Dube said:
<blockquote>Pearson Gowero was appointed as the CEO in June 2012, having joined the group in March 1997. He started at Chibuku Breweries in marketing and rose to become the divisional managing director. He was appointed to the Delta board in 2003 as executive director responsible for the beverages business sales and distribution operations.
Pearson has provided leadership to the group during a period of significant business challenges in the operating environment. The board and management of Delta wish to thank Gowero for his valued contribution to the group and wish him well in his retirement and future endeavors.</blockquote>
Gowero was appointed as the CEO in June 2012, having joined the Group in March 1997.
He started at Chibuku Breweries in marketing and rose to become the divisional managing director.
He was appointed to the Delta board in 2003 as executive director responsible for the beverages business sales and distribution operations.
Gowero was seconded to SABMiller Africa in 2006 where he served as managing director of Zambian Breweries Group until his return to Delta as the chief operating officer in 2011.

Delta CEO, Pearson Gowero Steps Down

Beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation said that its operations are hampered by scarce foreign currency, and the interbank market has not helped at all.
Speaking on the sidelines of Delta’s analyst briefing on Wednesday, the company’s chief executive officer Pearson Gowero said:
<blockquote>There is now an interbank market, so anybody that required forex should go to the interbank market.
But, what is clearly happening is that the interbank market doesn’t have enough dollars for everybody.
We have participated there. I do not have the numbers, but we are not getting as much as we would like.
… There was an initial amount of money available in the interbank market, but this was just in the first few weeks, thereafter, as I speak today there is very little if any that has been made available through that market and businesses have had to devise different ways of sustaining those investments.</blockquote>
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe recently introduced the interbank market where financial institutions can buy and sell foreign currency and Real Time Gross Settlement dollars.

Delta Struggling To Get Forex From Interbank Market

Economic commentators reckon that month on month inflation will go down by mid-year due to low demand.
Prices of goods and services continue to skyrocket caused mainly by a rapid fall in the value of the local currency against the United States dollar on the black market.
However, salaries have remained stagnant, reducing the buying power of ordinary citizens.
Africa Economic Development Studies (AEDS) executive director Gift Mugano said that business is pricing itself out of the market. He said:
<blockquote>Inflation is going to go down because of decline on the demand side, products are being priced using inflated exchange rate (and) by that business is placing itself out of the market because customers are out of money.
We are already seeing indications of slow demand. By mid-year there should be negative month on month inflation because people will not be buying, businesses can’t continue to raise prices because the salaries have not gone up.</blockquote>
Beverages manufacturer Delta Corporation last week reduced the price of coke and other carbonated drinks, which could be an indication that businesses could become averse to increasing prices willy nilly.

Beverages manufacturer Delta Corporation has marginally slashed prices of its carbonated soft drinks.
Delta virtually shut down its soft drink business in the last quarter of 2018 due to the ongoing foreign currency crisis.
The soft drinks market has of late been dominated by Pepsi, whose prices are reasonable by current standards.
Of late Delta, Corporation products have, however, slowly started to reappear on shop shelves.

Delta Slashes Price Of Coke & Other Carbonated Drinks

The recent hike in the price of beer has resulted in increased joblessness as sales volumes plummet.
In Zimbabwe’s second largest city, Bulawayo, beer selling outlets and night clubs have started laying off workers.
A manager of a local hotel who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on condition of anonymity had this to say:
<blockquote>Since the latest beer increases, our daily beer sales have drastically gone down. On this other day, we sold only a crate of clear beer. Before this increment, we used to sell more than 30 crates a day.</blockquote>
An owner of a bottle store situated along the city’s Robert Mugabe Street, Jealous Ncube told NewZimbabwe.com that:
<blockquote>The situation is very dire. I am now making a loss from my business because my monthly beer sales can no longer sustain my rentals and wages. A lot of my clients have switched to opaque beer and spirits.</blockquote>

High Beer Prices Force Night Clubs To Lay Off Workers

Delta Corporation’s corporate affairs director Mr Alex Makamure said the firm received foreign currency from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe and managed to buy raw materials sufficient to cover a month.
Speaking to journalists during a tour of the company by Industry’s and Commerce Minister Nqobizitha Ndlovu, Makamure said Delta has closed three factories because the firm has run out of key raw materials. He said the raw materials will be shipped sometime next week towards the first week of February. Said Makamure:
<blockquote>There is a structure that we are working on which will allow us to bring some kind of raw material supply in the next week or so, but won’t be enough maybe until we get to the tobacco marketing season. The order we are talking about will be shipped sometime next week towards the first week of February and will only cover one month. Facilities that we are working on, will benefit our sparkling beverages business which is currently limping. As we speak the Graniteside plant has not been running for about two weeks. If you saw our trading update, soft drink business was down 60 percent on prior year. It’s a catastrophe from that perspective, we are making losses in soft drink business as we speak. We understand that forex is in short supply in the country and this is tough. For soft drinks, as we speak, three factories are on shutdown because we have run out of key raw materials. So for the past four months, we have been limping along at about 30 percent capacity because of lack of raw material.</blockquote>

Delta's 3 Soft Drink Factories Closed, Govt Avails Forex Enough For One Month's Supply Of Raw Materials

Delta Corporation released a Trading Update for the third quarter and nine months to 31 December 2018.

<h3>TRADING ENVIRONMENT</h3>
Demand for the Company’s products was buoyant driven by consumer perception of favourable pricing as the Company has maintained stable prices since 2013.
The economy experienced resurgent inflation spurred by the market reaction to the changes in the monetary and fiscal policies announced in October 2018. This triggered price hikes premised on factoring in foreign currency premiums.
The acute shortage of foreign currency led to disruptions to business operations particularly the soft drinks business. The Board is concerned about the company’s ability to meet its foreign currency obligations and access to imported raw materials. It is hoped that the ongoing engagements with key stakeholders will result in improved access to foreign currency.
<h3>VOLUME PERFORMANCE</h3>
Lager beer volume grew by 27% over prior year for the quarter and is up 43% for the nine months. The business has endeavoured to meet the high consumer demand in spite of the challenges in accessing some imported raw materials and services.
The Sorghum beer volume in Zimbabwe grew by 15% above prior year for the quarter and 6% for the nine months. There were supply gaps due to frictional shortages of packaging materials and extended plant breakdowns mostly occasioned by lack of foreign currency for spares and contractual services. Chibuku Super contributed 85% of the volume.
National Breweries Plc Zambia (Natbrew Plc) recorded a volume growth of 4% for the quarter and 9% for the nine months. There are positive volume trends following the relaunch of Chibuku Super in the 1,25 litre pack.
The Sparkling beverages volume declined by 66% compared to prior year for the quarter and decreased by 26% for the nine months’ There were extended production stoppages arising from limited access to foreign currency required for importing key raw materials and the failure to clear arrear payments to The Coca Cola Company.
Group revenue increased by 5% for the quarter and 24% (19% • organic growth) for the nine months reflecting the growth in the beer businesses which was weighed down by depressed outturn in soft drinks. The business remains profitable and continues to generate positive cash flows. There is however need to note the disruptions to operations arising from limited access to foreign currency.
<h3>ACQUISITION OF UNITED NATIONAL (PTY) LIMITED SA</h3>
The company announced on 21 December 2018 that it had entered into binding agreements to acquire the 100% stake currently held by Diageo Plc in United National Breweries Proprietary Limited (South Africa), (UNB). UNB is the leading brewer of traditional beer and owns the Chibuku brand in that country. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of 2019 and is subject to regulatory approvals in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

<h3>REMINDER ON CAUTIONARY STATEMENT</h3>
Shareholders are reminded that the Company is trading under a cautionary issued with respect to the notice received from The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) advising of an intention to terminate the Bottler’s Agreements with the Group entities (Notified Intention). Constitutional lawyer and academic Alex Magaisa has said Government’s quick response to stop Delta Corporation from selling its products in US dollars shows it does not value the health of its citizens.
Acting President Constantino Chiwenga convened a meeting between Delta and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) where the central bank assured the beverage making firm of steady allocation of foreign currency for critical inputs. On Tuesday, Delta announced that its products will be charged in US dollars with effect from Friday the 4th of January 2019. Reacting on Twitter, Magaisa said Government’s quick response to Delta shows they value fizzy drinks and beer more. Said Magaisa:
<blockquote>If authentic, then as argued yesterday, Delta played the hard-bargaining game. And the quick resolution, RBZ agreeing to allocate forex to Delta, suggests the government values beer and fizzy drinks more than the health of its citizens.</blockquote>

Govt's Quick Response To Delta Suggests It Values Beer And Fizzy Drinks More Than The Health Of Its Citizens- Magaisa

Beverages manufacturer, Delta Corporation said that it owes foreign suppliers US$41 million. This was revealed in November by Delta chief executive Pearson Gowero and finance director Matts Valela while announcing the Company’s financial results for the six months to September.
Delta also revealed that it owed dividends worth US$30 million to Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer that holds 40% of Delta.
The company said that its annual foreign currency needs range from US$60 million to US$100 million. Delta’s major imports include raw materials for beverage manufacture and packaging.
Delta chief executive Pearson Gowero said at the time:
<blockquote>We faced a number of constraints, mainly due to outages in imported raw materials because of limited access to hard currency. We also found that, because of the perception that our products are going for a discount relative to what is happening elsewhere in the economy, that drove consumption and put our facilities under pressure as we were not able to cope with the demand.</blockquote>
Delta has made headlines recently when it announced that starting on Friday, it will be selling its products in foreign currency. The government has since summoned the company officials and warned them that the move is illegal.

Delta Owes Foreign Suppliers US$41 Million As Foreign Currency Remains In Short Supply

Industry and Commerce Minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu said Delta Corporation’s announcement it will start selling all its products in foreign currency with effect from tomorrow is illegal and against the spirit of fairness.
Minister Ndlovu said Government had tried to ensure businesses operate in a free atmosphere, but companies were now acting in bad faith. He said if Delta does not stop selling in foreign currency only the law will take its course. Said Ndlovu:

This is not only against the spirit of fairness, but it is also an illegal practice. In return, Government has expectations that business will operate in good faith and responsibly. At the centre of the relationship between Government and business is the spirit of engagement and a two-way communication between all parties. That spirit is defeated when one of the parties decides to unilaterally pronounce decisions against both the text and spirit of agreed principles.</blockquote>

The Ministry of Information and Publicity announced that the Minister of Trade and Commerce Mangaliso Ndlovu met with Delta Corporation executives today. The government assured the public that Delta is not shutting down and that there will be enough beverages this festive season.

Delta Is Not Closing Its Plant And There Will Be Adequate Beverages During Festive Season - Trade And Commerce Minister

In a written response to questions from The Chronicle yesterday, Delta Corporate Affairs executive Mrs Patricia Murambinda acknowledged the shortage of soft drinks and maheu brands across the country due to foreign currency shortages to import critical raw materials.
Murambinda said their maheu factory was operating at low capacity. She added that Delta’s banks and the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe are doing the best they can to ration the available foreign currency. Said Murambinda:
<blockquote>As reported in our previous trading updates, Delta relies on a number of critical imported raw materials. The limited availability of foreign currency has particularly affected soft drinks and maheu. We have not been able to source enough foreign currency for these imports as foreign currency is currently scarce in the nation. Products supply may continue to be disrupted by low foreign currency availability and we always keep our customers informed at all times on the product lines which will be available. Our maheu factory is currently running lower than capacity, with significant shortages of product on the market due to a shortage of packaging material.</blockquote>

Shops Run Out Of Soft Drinks, Maheu As Delta Faces Foreign Currency Shortages

Delta Technical Institute 2018 Apprenticeship Intake

Speaking to The Source, Delta Corporation Corporate affairs director Mr Alex Makamure said that they will be closing the Victoria Falls distribution depot at the end of July and direct store deliveries will be handled from Hwange.
Makamure said that collection customers will be serviced by the wholesalers in Victoria Falls. He did not mention the fate of the depot’s workers.

Delta Corporation closes Victoria Falls depot

Beverage manufacturer Delta Corporation recorded reduced revenues in the last quarter and full year to March this year. Delta Corporation reported group revenue dropped by 15 percent and 10 percent for the quarter and the full year respectively.
The company attributed the drop to a combination of imports, cash shortages and inaccessibility of markets due to heavy rains. In a statement Delta said:
<blockquote>The fourth quarter recorded a particularly depressed volume and revenue outturn. In addition to the constrained aggregate demand, the outturn was impacted negatively by heavy rains that reduced market access and outdoor consumption occasions.
The pronounced shortages of bank notes and limited availability of alternative payment platforms also affected demand,
There was a marked increase in imports of soft drinks mainly from Zambia and Mozambique in the second half of the year</blockquote>

Delta Beverages blames cash shortages, heavy rains and imports for reduced revenues

<a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Stock_Exchange">Zimbabwe Stock Exchange</a>-listed beverages maker Delta Corporation has said that it will not be retrenching in  Zimbabwe. This is despite the recent announcement by its new parent company  AB InBev that it will be cutting  5 500 jobs worldwide.  In South Africa, more than 1000 employees are set to lose their jobs as a result.
Delta Corporation company secretary Mr Alex Makamure, told the Sunday Mail that in Zimbabwe jobs are secure as they are not determined by the parent company but by the prevailing situation in Zimbabwe. He said if any job losses were to occur, it would be as a  result of the prevailing economic hardships in Zimbabwe.  Said Makamure:
<blockquote>As far as we can read from the AB InBev statements, the anticipated global job losses referred to did not cover associate entities. As Delta we are not privy to the circumstances giving rise to the retrenchments in South Africa that you allude to.
Any job losses in Zimbabwe will be driven by the unavoidable review of our business given the difficult trading environment and not as a consequence of the changes at shareholder level</blockquote>

Delta Corporation will not be cutting jobs in Zimbabwe

Delta Corporation has recorded a 10 percent decline in revenue during the quarter ended 31 December 2016, attributed to the depressed demand and product shortages due to water supply disruptions.
Figures released by Delta show that sorghum beer volume declined by 4% for the quarter, owing to the disruptions to production expressed due to water cuts. The disruptions affected production at Chitungwiza and Fairbridge plants. Lager beer volume was also down 8% for the nine months to December 31, 2016. Sparkling beverages volume was down 11% for the quarter due to the adverse impact of the increased imports from neighbouring countries.
Meanwhile, Delta Corporation confirmed that discussions are ongoing between the board and the other parties following the AB Inbev and Sabmiller deal with no specific position having been reached with respect to Zimbabwe.
