The driver of a kombi who is accused of kidnapping 25 pupils from David Livingstone Primary School in Harare on 20 January this year has died.
Pindula News has learnt that Samuel Honde, who was out of custody on bail, died on Friday morning (today) after he suffered a stroke several weeks ago.
It is believed he experienced a mental lapse which resulted in him driving the minibus to Macheke, Mashonaland East, instead of Kuwadzana in Harare.
Following Honde’s arrest in January, Harare magistrate Letwin Rwodzi ordered a mental examination to be conducted on him. She directed the State to proceed in terms of Section 26 of the Mental Health Act.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Honde was contracted by various parents, since 2016, to ferry learners to and from David Livingstone Primary School to their homes in greater Harare.
He was residing at a Seventh-Day Adventist church in Kuwadzana, Harare.
On the day the alleged kidnapping occurred, Honde, after picking up the 25 learners (14 girls and 11 boys) at the school, drove towards Macheke instead of driving the learners to their respective homes in Kuwadzana and surrounding areas.
The vehicle was spotted by other motorists who reported to the police after seeing the minors crying in a stationary Nissan Caravan on the busy highway. The vehicle had stopped after running out of fuel.
Honde was then arrested for kidnapping and taken to Macheke Police Station.
The children were reunited with their parents after they were referred to Marondera Provincial Hospital for medical examination.
Honde suffered a stroke whilst he was still on remand, and was undergoing various medical tests.
Unfortunately, he did not recover from the stroke and died this morning at Harare Hospital.

Driver Accused Of "Kidnapping" 25 ECD Learners In Harare And Dumping Them In Macheke Has Died

The kombi driver who is accused of kidnapping 25 pupils from David Livingstone Primary School in Harare was on Saturday, 20 January, remanded in custody by a Harare magistrate who further ordered a mental examination to be conducted on him.
Samuel Honde (60), was arrested in Macheke on Thursday in an alleged kidnapping attempt on 25 David Livingstone Primary School learners.
Honde appeared before Harare magistrate Letwin Rwodzi who directed the State to proceed in terms of Section 26 of the Mental Health Act, reported <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/mental-examination-ordered-on-david-livingstone-school-kidnapping-suspect/">ZimLive</a>.
He is now set to be examined by two State doctors before he returns to court.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Honde was contracted by various parents, since 2016, to ferry learners to and from David Livingstone Primary School to their homes in greater Harare.
He lives at Seventh Day Adventist church in Kuwadzana, Harare.

Magistrate Orders Mental Examination On Kombi Driver Who "Abducted" 25 ECD Learners

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested Samuel Honde on allegations of kidnapping 25 learners from David Livingstone Primary School learners. Honde who is a driver of a commuter omnibus that picks the learners to and from school, picked the learners around 1 pm yesterday, as usual. He was destined from Kuwadzana but drove along Harare-Mutare road until the vehicle ran out of fuel in Macheke, some 91 kilometres outside Harare. In a police report seen by Pindula News, the police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations are in progress to establish the motive behind the kidnapping. The arrest follows a tip-off received by ZRP Macheke from a passer-by that there was a Nissan Caravan kombi registration number, AFN 0198, with children on board parked by the road side. The informant suspected foul play as some of the children were crying.
Investigations by the Police established that the suspect had parked the vehicle after it had ran out of fuel. It was established that the suspect was contracted by various parents, since 2016, to ferry learners to and from David Livingstone Primary School to their homes in greater Harare. On 18th January 2024 at around 1300 hours, the suspect picked 25 learners (14 girls and 11 boys) at the school and drove towards Macheke instead of driving the learners to their respective homes in Kuwadzana and surrounding areas.
The learners have since been reunited with their parents after they were referred to Marondera Provincial Hospital for medical examination. 
Investigations are in progress to establish the motive behind the kidnapping.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns parents and guardians to ensure their representatives are present as children are picked to and from school by contracted transporters. The representatives will assist to monitor the movement of the hired transporters.

The students were taken to Marondera Hospital to get a thorough check-up to see if they were physically or emotionally hurt. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/19/update-david-livingstone-primary-kids-found/">According to a police report</a>, the driver, Samuel Honde, had been hired by parents to transport the students to and from David Livingstone Primary School in Harare since 2016. When the police asked Honde where he was going, he said he was heading to Kuwadzana Extension in Harare. He was arrested for kidnapping and taken to Macheke Police Station. The children’s families were informed, and the students were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital for a medical examination. When the police arrived, they found 25 children in the van, consisting of 14 girls and 11 boys aged between 4 and 8. Honde, who is 60 years old and lives at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kuwadzana Extension, will soon go to court.
According to one of Mr. Honde’s church friends who spoke to Pindula News, the driver was not hired by the parents to transport the children. Instead, he is only a driver of a minibus owned by one of his church friends who has a contract with the parents. He spoke to Pindula News:

He also mentioned that the owner of the omnibus had been hired a long time ago to transport the children when he had a small truck. Later, he bought a minibus, and that’s when he hired Mr. Honde to be the driver.
