A 23-year-old man was killed by a crocodile at Chilo Gorge in Gonarezhou National Park, located in the remote southeast corner of Zimbabwe.
Tinashe Farawo, spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks), confirmed the incident.
He said two crocodiles that had fed on the man’s remains were subsequently eliminated, and body parts of the deceased were recovered from their stomachs. Said Farawo:

It is unfortunate that a 23 year old man was killed by a crocodile at Chilo Gorge in Gonarezhou. 2 crocodiles were eliminated and body parts of the deceased were recovered from the bellies of the crocs.

Crocodile attacks in Zimbabwe are primarily the result of human-crocodile conflicts, with incidents being more frequent in areas such as Lake Kariba.
Many attacks occur when people fish in regions inhabited by crocodiles, putting them at risk, particularly during the dry season when crocodiles are more likely to be found near the water’s edge.

23-Year-Old Man Killed And Eaten By Crocodiles In Gonarezhou

Two women from Jambesi, Hwange, are currently hospitalised at Victoria Falls Hospital following a savage crocodile attack at Matetsi River.
Fanuel Mudimba, the councillor for Jambesi Ward 7, told <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/victoria-falls-hospital-crocodile-attack-victims-decline-interview-amidst-suffering/">VicFallsLive</a> that the women were engaged in illegal fishing at Matetsi River when they were attacked by a crocodile.
One woman suffered severe injuries to her left arm, while the other sustained injuries to her fingers and arm while attempting to rescue her companion.
Initially, the women agreed to speak with VicFallsLive, but later declined, saying they were “sorted” and no longer needed assistance with medication or food.
However, their relatives later revealed that the women were in urgent need of injections and food, both at the hospital and at home.
It became clear that the women had lost trust in organisations and individuals who had promised to assist them.
They reportedly disappeared after conducting interviews and taking records shortly after the women’s admission to the hospital nearly two weeks ago.

Two women were attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Matetsi River in Hwange. One woman's arm was badly hurt, and the other hurt her fingers and arm while trying to help. They were taken to the hospital, but later refused help from a news website. Their families said they needed medicine and food urgently. They didn't trust the people who promised to help them before. The women were admitted to the hospital two weeks ago, but disappeared after interviews and records were taken.

Crocodile Attack Leaves Two Women Injured In Hwange

In the tranquil fishing community of Gatche Gatche, nestled along the shores of Lake Kariba, a chilling legend has taken root.
Residents speak in hushed tones of a crocodile with supernatural powers—a creature that has allegedly claimed the lives of more than 21 people, primarily fishermen.
But it’s not the sheer number of victims that sets this reptile apart; it’s the gruesome manner of their demise.
Locals have christened this elusive giant reptile as “Macheni” because of the crocodile’s peculiar taste for human private parts.
Victims consistently lose these intimate body parts, while the rest of their bodies remain untouched.
Some even speculate that Macheni is no ordinary predator. Instead, it serves as a weapon, wielded by an individual possessing potent “magical powers.”
This mysterious figure allegedly employs the harvested private parts for dark arts.
Kariba residents, who shared their accounts with <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/the-terror-of-kariba-with-a-taste-for-human-private-partszimparks-spokesperson-tinashe-farawo-responding-to-h-metro-enquiries-has-told-this-newspaper-that-residents-of-the-affe/">H-Metro</a>, insist that Macheni is no mere crocodile. They believe it is a phantom, slipping through the murky waters undetected.
Officials from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) have reportedly struggled to track down and eliminate this enigmatic creature.
Residents also allege that most, if not all, of the attacks have occurred in a concentrated region.
Tinashe Farawo, Zimparks spokesperson, acknowledges the community’s belief that Macheni transcends the natural realm. He said:

A total of 32 lives were lost from crocodile attacks in Lake Kariba, between Sanyati River and the Lake Kariba Dam Wall, between 2016 and 2023.
Between 2016 and 2023, 38 crocodiles were eliminated during the same period. Over 40 crocodiles were also captured and translocated.
As from 2019, legal and illegal gill netting fishers in Gatche Gatche area assumed that crocodile attacks taking place in the Tsetse Island general area were caused by one crocodile.
While the fact that the attacks are caused by only one crocodile remains an assumption, efforts have been made by Zimparks to assess the area and to eliminate suspect crocodiles in the general area.
The community has named the alleged crocodile “Macheni.” Reasons for the assumption that the crocodile attacks were caused by one crocodile emanated from the fact that most of the attacks were taking place in one general area.
“The fishers have a belief that the crocodile is a spiritual crocodile and this is the reason they named it “Macheni,” since they claim that the crocodile used to only remove testicles from men after the attack.”

Farawo said that their observations have revealed that the crocodile attacks in this area were generally taking place at night. He added:
<blockquote>
Gill netting at night is not allowed, it is actually conducted by poachers. The area of concern is not a legal fishing ground, which they also called “Macheni Bay”. Illegal fishers usually delay giving reports of attacks and this makes follow up difficult.
The reasons why most of the attacks were taking place in this general area were that many people were flocking to this area to do illegal fishing, this is probably because they were enjoying good fish catches in this area.
It is also a fact that crocodiles also feed on fish and they also tend to flock areas with more fish and this has caused this conflict. 
More than 7 crocodiles have been eliminated in the general area between 2020 and 2023, however, the Gatche Gatche community has maintained that the alleged “Macheni” is still alive. 
Several attempts to eliminate the alleged crocodile were done way after the crocodile attacks, since all reports are received days after the attacks, making the searches difficult. 
We have also called upon the Gatche Gatche community to help to identify the alleged crocodile so that we eliminate it once it has been spotted.
We are continuing working with the fishers association to identification of the alleged crocodile.

Farawo said between December and January this year, Zimparks intensified anti-poaching patrols at Tsetse Island and removed all poachers, who periodically put illegal shelters.
He said since then, no person has been attacked by crocodiles at the alleged “Macheni Bay”.
Farawo added that once the specific crocodile is positively identified, Zimparks will take decisive action to eliminate the threat it poses.

“Macheni”: The Enigmatic Crocodile Of Lake Kariba That Allegedly Feeds On Human Privates

A mother who was saved from the jaws of a crocodile by her courageous two young children in Mhondoro in January this year is happy to have a second chance in life.
Blantinna Magaya was moments away from being dragged under the water by the crocodile when her two children, Luckmore and his sister Peace, attacked the reptile, forcing it to abandon its prey.
Luckmore is 12 years old, and his sister Peace is only 10 years old.
On Saturday, President Mnangagwa met the two siblings and gave them US$5 000 cash each and pledged to cover their educational expenses, up to the university level.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/my-children-are-heroes-mom-hails-super-kids/">H-Metro</a>, Magaya said she was grateful to President Mnangagwa and Mabvuku-Tafara MP, Pedzai Sakupwanya (ZANU PF) for honouring her family. She said:

I want to take this opportunity to thank my children for giving me a second chance at life.
I want to thank President Mnangagwa and Honorable Sakupwanya for everything that they have done for my children and me.
Words alone are not enough but I am grateful for everything that has been done to my family.
</blockquote>
Narrating her encounter with the crocodile, Magaya said she only remembers drowning in water with the crocodile clutching her leg. She said:

I don’t remember anything that happened when these children woke me up, all I remember is seeing them on top of me when I was about to be dragged into the river for the third time by the crocodile.
During that moment the crocodile was clinging onto one of my hands and I instructed them to hit it in the mouth.
I don’t even know how I managed to hold the crocodile’s mouth.
So, when they were hitting the crocodile’s mouth, they were also breaking my leg and when I felt the crocodile letting me go, I told them to stop so that they could pull me out of the water.
Everything else that happened I have no idea. All I remember is that I was drowning in water and I think when we get to the village they will explain to me what really happened.

Crocodiles are found in swamps, marshes, lakes, rivers, and estuaries, therefore people need to use extreme caution around these water bodies.
The reptiles are said to be most active and dangerous at dusk and night.
If you encounter one, crouch down and back away while keeping your eyes on it.
If attacked by a crocodile, aim for its eyes or nostrils. Gouge, pierce, and do whatever it takes to discourage further aggression.
However, the best option is to stay alert, avoid risky situations, and respect their territory to minimize the chances of encountering these powerful reptiles.

Mhondoro Crocodile Attack Survivor Hails Her Brave Kids

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has awarded US$10 000 and scholarships to two courageous siblings from Mhondoro who rescued their mother from the jaws of a crocodile in January this year.
The President met the two children, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, on Saturday, 02 March at State House in Harare where he lavished them with gifts for their rare act of bravery.
Posting on social media site X (formerly Twitter), the Head of State said it is imperative to teach bravery and compassion to the youth. He wrote:

Today I met two brave young heroes, Peace and Luckmore Magaya, from Mhondoro. They saved their mother from a crocodile attack. Inspired by their courage, I’ve taken on their education fees and awarded them $5,000 each. Let’s nurture such bravery and compassion in our youth.

In January this year, the brother and sister, aged 12 and 10, took on the reptile as it dragged their mother into a river.
A video of the siblings recounting the encounter went viral on social media early this year.
Narrating the encounter, one of the children explained how they instinctively challenged one of the world’s most powerful and dangerous reptiles to save their mother’s life. Said the boy:

We saw her being dragged into the river by a crocodile. This is when we found a long stick which we stretched towards her and pulled her out. It tried to attack her on the leg and I blocked the crocodile by inserting a hand in the mouth, preventing it from pulling her into the river.
</blockquote>
The younger sister then placed a leg on the crocodile’s head and attacked its eyes with a stick, forcing it to let go and retreat into the water.
The children managed to drag their mother out of the water and after noticing injuries to one of her legs, they called for help, and a villager assisted her back home.
In a post on X, the Office of the President said the scholarship awarded to the siblings covers their education needs up to tertiary education. Reads the post:

ED Rewards Young Siblings Who Saved Mum From Crocodile... US$10 000 Plus Scholarships

Villagers in Tsholotsho district, Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe, are concerned about the increasing population of lions, hyenas, and jackals that are killing their livestock. They also mentioned that the number of elephants is growing, and these animals are destroying their crops. According to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/human-wildlife-conflict-lion-hyena-and-jackal-population-balloons-in-tsholotsho-district/">Chronicle,</a> the issue was raised during a meeting between Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu and the Sipepa community, where the minister engaged with communities to understand their challenges regarding the environment, forestry, and wildlife.
Human-wildlife conflict is a growing problem in Zimbabwe, with climate change-induced droughts being identified as a major cause. As droughts occur, wild animals like elephants, lions, buffaloes, hyenas, and wild dogs stray into communities in search of food and water. This leads to conflicts where villagers lose their livestock, crops, and other properties, while some people have been injured or killed. The situation is particularly prevalent in Lupane, Binga, Hwange, and Tsholotsho.
During the meeting, community members expressed their concerns. Mr. Dumisani Nkomo mentioned that hyenas and jackals were killing their livestock, forcing them to keep the animals in pens for most of the day. He was quoted as saying:
<blockquote>
Wild animals like hyenas and jackals are killing our livestock here. We have been forced to keep our livestock in pens for the greater part of the day because of these wild animals. How can we have good co-existence with hyenas and jackals? These animals do not benefit us at all unlike elephants which can be sold for the benefit of the community.

Mr. Msitheli Sibindi raised the issue of lions attacking their livestock and noted that some of these lions had collars, indicating they were being used for research. He called for action to address this problem, suggesting that those conducting research take measures to mitigate the conflict. He said:

What is of concern to us is that some of the lions attacking our livestock have collars which shows that they are being used for research. Can’t those who are doing research do something about them because Campfire has failed us.
</blockquote>
He also emphasised the need for a strong boundary fence to keep wild animals away from communities, as well as culling to manage the animal population.
Mrs. Florence Nkomo shared her personal experience of losing four cattle to lions in January and urged authorities to address the problem. Councillor Gift Tshuma reported that 21 animals had been killed by wild animals since the beginning of the year, leading to concerns about the safety of children walking long distances to school.
Minister Ndlovu acknowledged the challenges and highlighted the issue of the blanket ban on ivory and elephant trade imposed by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). He said:

I am troubled because the CITES treaty is now being used to dictate what countries like us which have animals can and cannot do by countries that do not have animals.
We have a serious fight within CITES because through them we are not allowed to sell ivory of even animals that died of natural causes.
</blockquote>
In Zimbabwe, the conflict between humans and wildlife is causing serious harm. Over the past five years, approximately 400 people have lost their lives due to human-wildlife conflict, according to ZimParks, the country’s parks and wildlife management authority. In 2020, there were 60 deaths and 40 injuries. In 2021 alone, more than 80 people were killed by elephants, and many others were injured by animals like crocodiles and hyenas. This makes Zimbabwe the country with the highest rate of human-wildlife conflict deaths in the Southern Africa region.
The number of human-wildlife conflict cases is increasing, with 68 people killed in 2022 as they entered wildlife areas or when animals strayed into villages. This conflict is a result of the growing populations of both humans and wildlife. In the first quarter of 2023, there were 22 deaths and 43 injuries related to human-wildlife conflict.

Villagers Live In Fear As Human-Wildlife Conflict Rises In Zimbabwe

The Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) has managed to account for a crocodile that recently attacked and seriously injured two teenage boys in the Chivake River in Gutu.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimparks-kill-problem-gutu-crocodile/">The Herald</a> that the crocodile was shot and killed by rangers and its carcass taken to Masvingo. Said Farawo:

We eliminated the crocodile in the Chivake River in Gutu after it attacked and injured two boys who were taken to Chivhu Hospital for treatment. Their condition is stable.
Every time there is a problem animal, Zimparks attends to such situations and either kills the animal or animals or just scares them away and in this case we killed the problem crocodile in Chiguhune.

Farawo implored members of the public to treat water bodies with caution as they risk being attacked by crocodiles.
Cases of human-wildlife conflict have been on the rise in recent years and this has been attributed to a population increase of both humans and wildlife, the effects of climate change, deforestation, illegal cutting of grass, and general mismanagement of natural resources.

Zimparks Rangers Kill Problem Crocodile In Gutu

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Authority (ZimParks) says a man believed to be in his early 40s was killed and eaten by a crocodile while fishing with his colleague in the Runde River around the Chiredzi area at night.
Zimpark rangers then hunted down the killer crocodile, almost 4 metres long, and eliminated it before ripping open its stomach to recover the remains of the victim, who is yet to be identified.
Zimparks spokesperson Tinashe Farawo confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimparks-rangers-kill-runde-croc-after-reptile-eats-fisherman/">The Herald</a> and warned members of the public to be wary of crocodiles on water bodies. Farawo said:

We have received an unfortunate incident where a man in his 40s was attacked and killed by a crocodile while fishing in Runde River. Our team of alert rangers trekked and killed the problem animal.
We want to encourage people to treat every water body with suspicion, especially during the current rainy season.
Information that we have at the moment is that the deceased fisherman was in the company of another colleague and the pair was fishing in the Runde River at night when the problem crocodile pounced.

Man Eaten By Crocodile While Fishing At Night

A 13-year-old boy from Checheche narrowly escaped death after he was attacked by a crocodile recently while crossing Save River with his friends.
Danmore Gwenzi fought the reptile with bare hands after it had grabbed his thigh.
He poked his hand into the mouth of the crocodile and it let loose its grip but removed a chunk of his flesh.
His friends ran away and alerted villagers who then rushed to the scene where they found Danmore on the riverbank.
The teenager was rushed to St Peter’s Hospital in Chisumbanje where he was admitted.
Danmore and his mother spoke to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/boy-13-fights-crocodile/">The Manica Post</a> about the attack. The boy said:
<blockquote>
We were crossing the Save River with my friends. The water was ankle high and we thought no crocodiles would be lurking there.
As we were about to reach the riverbank, the crocodile suddenly latched on me. It grabbed me on the thigh and I gathered some courage and poked my hand into its mouth.
The crocodile loosened its grip and I managed to wobble to safety. Other villagers then came to my rescue.

His mother Marita Gwenzi said they were struggling with paying the hospital bills. She said:
<blockquote>
My son had a brush with death. I am happy he managed to survive. Danmore needs to be stitched and have a skin graft on his thigh. However, we are struggling to pay the bills.
</blockquote>
Last week, Cabinet adopted the establishment of a relief fund to cushion victims of human-wildlife conflicts but it is not clear if the Fund is now operational.

Boy (13) Fights Crocodile In Save River

A man from Zhombe, Midlands Province, has been missing since Monday this week after a crocodile dragged him into the Gweru River.
Mutsa Muchenje, whose age was not given, was reportedly fishing in a makeshift canoe with friends at a dam at ARDA Fair Acres in Dendera when he was attacked by the reptile.
Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit Chairperson, Fortune Mpungu, confirmed the incident to the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zhombe-man-mauled-by-crocodile/">Chronicle</a>, saying Muchenje’s remains are yet to be located. Said Mpungu:

We received a report of a man who was mauled by a crocodile on Monday while fishing with others. They were using a makeshift canoe when the crocodile attacked.
Others managed to escape unhurt but Muchenje could not and was dragged into the water.

He added that the community together with the Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management (Zimparks) as well as Zibagwe Rural District Council rangers are conducting a search for Muchenje’s remains.

Zhombe Man Dragged From Makeshift Boat By Crocodile

A Binga man escaped death by a whisker after being attacked by a crocodile while allegedly running away from a charging elephant.
His left arm and leg were amputated following the crocodile attack. 
Winders Sianene (34) was attacked by a crocodile as he tried to run away from an elephant that was charging at him when he was on his way to Mlibizi River where he was going for a fishing expedition.
Mr Fanikiso Mkombwe, brother to Sianene confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/chased-by-elephant-caught-by-crocodile/">Sunday News</a>. Said Mr Mkombwe:

Winders was on his way to Mlibizi River when he saw an elephant charging towards him. It was then that he decided to run and jump into the river trying to evade the elephant. Unfortunately, he was attacked by a crocodile in the process. He was going to do fishing in Mlibizi River. He has since been admitted to Mpilo Hospital while his leg and arm have been amputated.

It’s not stated how he escaped from the crocodile.
Zimparks spokesperson Mr Tinashe Farawo also confirmed the incident and warned the public to stay away from water bodies and treat them cautiously.
Meanwhile, Victoria Falls-based poet, Obert Dube has donated a wheelchair to Sianene through his wheelchair donation programme.

Man Caught And Attacked By A Crocodile While Fleeing From An Elephant

A fisherman died on Thursday morning after being attacked by a crocodile while fishing at Lomagundi Lakeside in Lake Kariba.
Reports suggest that hippopotamuses tried to save the man from the reptile attack after he was snapped by a huge crocodile while fishing knee-deep in the waters of Lake Kariba.
The man, however, died several minutes after being retrieved. He had sustained a deep gush on the hand which was nearly severed from the body and a wound to the rib cage.
His body was taken to Kariba District Hospital mortuary.
