Police in Kadoma have arrested five suspects in connection with a case of theft of copper cables at Ngwarati Mine, Turf, Kadoma on Sunday morning.
The arrests were confirmed by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi in a statement on Monday. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Donald Magaya (23), Onismo Magaya (26), Takudzwa Mango (25), Rabson Mandini (23) and Innocent Chafera (38) in connection with a case of theft of copper cables which occurred at Ngwarati Mine, Turf, Kadoma on 14th April 2024 at around 1030 hours.
On 14th April 2024, police in Kadoma acted on received information and intercepted Donald Magaya, Onismo Magaya, Rabson Mandini and Takudzwa Mango who were travelling in two white Toyota GD6 motor vehicles registration number AFU 4025 and AGH 4138, near Ngezi Services Garage, Turf, Kadoma.
On seeing the police, the suspects’ accomplice, Kupakwashe Mutizira, fled from the scene. The police conducted a search and recovered copper cables weighing 2 572 kilograms valued at US$48 360.00. Subsequently, the four suspects were arrested.
The four suspects were interviewed and implicated Innocent Chafera as their accomplice, who was arrested while hiding in a disused mining shaft.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of the outstanding suspect, Kupakwashe Mutizira who is being sought in connection with this case.

In an unrelated incident, police have launched a manhunt for a foreign national, Francis Chikopa (45) over the alleged theft of copper late last month. Asst Comm Nyathi said:

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of a foreign national, Francis Chikopa (45) who is being sought in connection with a case of theft of copper which occurred between 30th March 2024 and 31st March 2024.
The suspect was driving a white Howo Sinotruk loaded with 36 tonnes of copper which was in transit from Zambia to Mozambique.
He offloaded the copper at an unknown place and later dumped the truck at Macheke Business Centre, Macheke.

Police Recover Copper Cables Worth US$48 000 Stolen From A Mine

Two Zimbabwean nationals, Colin Mlambo and Andile Alfonso Ndlovu, have been sentenced to 20 years in prison for tampering with essential infrastructure and stealing copper cables in Limpopo, South Africa. The Thabazimbi Regional Court found them guilty of cutting and stealing 100 meters of Transnet overhead cable at Kilkenny train station. Security guards from Isidingo Security Company apprehended them after spotting their vehicle near the crime scene. The stolen copper cables were found in their possession.
Limpopo provincial spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi told <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/two-zim-men-sentenced-to-20-years-in-jail-for-stealing-transnet-cables-in-limpopo-b2449120-65ab-4af4-8274-41215dadf823">IOL</a> that the accused denied the charges. Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi was quoted as saying:

Both accused (men) pleaded not guilty to the charges. In aggravation of sentence, state Advocate Milton Setlhako submitted to the court that these types of copper cable theft are prevalent in this jurisdiction and there is a huge impact to the economy of this country and Transnet had suffered a huge loss.

During the trial, a Transnet senior investigator testified that Kilkenny train station had experienced 32 incidents of copper theft between February and July 2021, resulting in the loss of over R3 million. The frequent thefts caused disruptions to train services and significant financial losses for Transnet. The state prosecutor emphasized the economic impact of these thefts and requested a substantial sentence.
The court sentenced Mlambo and Ndlovu to 20 years imprisonment for tampering with essential infrastructure, 15 years for theft of copper cables, and an additional two years for violating immigration laws. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning they will serve 20 years in total.
The Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Ivy Thenga, welcomed the sentence and expressed hope that it would send a strong message that such offences would not be tolerated. She emphasised the importance of protecting essential infrastructure for the public’s benefit.
In South Africa, there have been numerous cases of both foreign nationals and locals being arrested for stealing copper cables and committing various other crimes. This problem has persisted over the years and has affected the country. Copper cable theft is a significant issue because it disrupts essential services, such as electricity and telecommunications, and causes financial losses for businesses and the economy as a whole.

South Africa: Two Zimbabweans Sentenced T 20 Years For Copper Cable Theft

A police officer was arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables and solar panels from President Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm and neighbouring Brownland Farm in Kwekwe, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/cop-arrested-for-stealing-from-president-mnangagwas-farm/">reported the Chronicle</a>.
The suspect, Musa Mukuli (40), is a police intelligence member based at the Nehanda Police Camp.
It is alleged that Mukuli and three other accomplices who are on the run, stole copper cables from the two neighbouring farms in the Sherwood Block.
The suspects pounced on Precabe Farm and stole copper cables but Mukuli was nabbed by alert security details when the gang tried to steal the solar panels from Brownland Farm.
Mukuli appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate Samukelisiwe Gumbo for contravening provisions of the Electricity Act and was remanded in custody to 22 September.
Prosecuting, Michelle Daraja said that on 07 September, Mukuli and three accomplices, Brandon Ncube, William Wurayayi and one Jameson went to Precabe Farm where they stole copper cables from a water pump house.
While in the act, they were interrupted by alert security details but three others managed to escape.
Mukuli was apprehended but he wrestled with and overpowered the security details until he managed to escape.
On 14 September at around 11 PM, the gang connived to steal solar panels from Brownland Estate Farm. Said Daraja:

The four accused persons went to the mentioned farm and removed and took 3×335 watts solar panels supplying power to the borehole. They hid the panels in a nearby bush.
They were, however, spotted by the security details from neighbouring Precabe Farm who tracked them down.

The court also heard that as the suspects attempted to board their getaway Honda Fit vehicle, the security details pounced and managed to apprehend Mukuli while three others escaped.
Mukuli indicated that they had hidden the solar panels in a bush near the scene and this linked them to the copper cables theft.
The security details handed over Mukuli to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kwekwe leading to his subsequent appearance in court.

Police Officer Steals From Mnangagwa's Farm

The Zimbabwean National Assembly which is the lower chamber of the bicameral Parliament of Zimbabwe has approved the Electricity Amendment Bill.
Clause 2 of the Bill introduces harsher penalties for the illegal abstraction or diversion of electricity and removes the option to pay a fine, except in special cases.
Clause 3 introduces heavier penalties for the transportation of material used in electricity generation, transmission, distribution or supply, and removes the option to pay a fine. Instead, a person convicted of such a crime will be liable to a minimum of 10 years’ imprisonment.
However, the Court can consider special circumstances that might justify a lesser penalty. <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">The Bill</a> aims to discourage illegal activities related to electricity and promote the sustainable supply of electricity in <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe</a>.
Electricity property theft remains a significant problem in Zimbabwe, with copper cables being a common target due to their high value on the black market. This problem is driven by high unemployment and economic hardship. It is suspected that most of the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">stolen cables</a> are smuggled to neighbouring <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">South Africa</a> and then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.
Theft of copper cables from power and <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">telecommunications infrastructure</a> results in significant financial losses for companies and can lead to widespread power cuts and communication disruptions. Vandalism to electricity infrastructure such as transformers and cables has also been reported to contribute to power cuts across the country.
