The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) has recalled a batch of YAZ PLUS contraceptive tablets due to a manufacturing mistake that could affect safety.
Richard Rukwata, MCAZ’s director-general, said the affected batch (WEW961J), made by Bayer in South Africa, had incorrect tablet arrangements.
Instead of 24 pink hormone tablets and 4 orange hormone-free tablets, some packs had 24 orange tablets and 4 pink tablets. Said Rukwata:
<blockquote>
This recall is a precautionary measure to protect public health. Non-compliance with product quality specifications can lead to a loss of efficacy and the affected contraceptive may not provide the intended protection. We urge all stakeholders to take immediate action.
</blockquote>
Rukwata urged wholesalers, pharmacies, clinics, and hospitals to isolate the affected batch and work closely with Bayer and local distributors.
He also advised consumers using the contraceptive to check the batch number on their packs. He said:
<blockquote>
If you find batch WEW961J, stop using it immediately, return it to your pharmacist, and consult a healthcare professional for alternatives.

The MCAZ in Zimbabwe recalled YAZ PLUS contraceptive tablets because some packs had the wrong tablets. Instead of pink and orange tablets in the right order, some packs had them mixed up. This mistake could make the contraceptive less effective. The director-general of MCAZ, Richard Rukwata, asked everyone who has this batch (WEW961J) to stop using it, return it, and talk to a healthcare professional. Pharmacies and clinics were also told to isolate this batch and work with the company to fix the problem. The recall is to protect people's health.

Batch Of Family Planning Pills Recalled In Zimbabwe Due Incorrect Tablet Arrangement

Trinity Children’s Rights (TCR), a rights group, has thrown its weight behind Vice-President and Health minister Constantino Chiwenga’s stance barring girls under 16 years from accessing contraceptives.
Chiwenga last week rejected a proposal by legislators to allow young girls to access medical treatment, including contraceptives without parental consent.
He was responding to a report by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health, which advocated for rights to sexual reproductive health services (SRHS) for underage girls.
Speaking to NewsDay on Tuesday, Trinity Children’s Rights spokesperson Tarisai Dongo said allowing underage girls to access SRHS services would encourage them to engage in early sex. She said:
<blockquote>At 16, some girls are likely to be engaging in sexual activities, but that does not mean we should give them the leeway to access contraceptives.
It’s like we are saying they may begin to indulge in sexual activities at such a young age.</blockquote>
Last week, the Health Portfolio Committee led by Ruth Labode (MDC Alliance) called for the removal of age restrictions for SRHS to curb early child pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases like HIV and Aids.
But Chiwenga shot down the idea, saying girls under the age of 16 cannot be given contraceptives as they cannot legally consent to legal sexual activity.

Rights Group Backs Chiwenga On Contraceptives For Children

The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has introduced a new contraceptive called Sayana Press.
The new contraceptive, which is manufactured in Belgium, is an injection that should be administered every 13 weeks.
Unlike, Depo-Provera which must be injected by a health care provider, Sayana Press can be self-administered at home.
The other difference between the two injections is that Depo-Provera is injected into a muscle, usually in the buttocks or in the arm, while Sayana Press is injected beneath the skin at the front of the thigh or abdomen.
ZNFPC executive director Dr Munyaradzi Murwira said the rollout has since begun. He said:
<blockquote>It is safe and has been approved by the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ).
It is currently registered and approved by regulatory authorities in more than 50 countries worldwide, including in Europe and the USA.</blockquote>

A Gweru-based youth coach, Orga Nkala, said it was unfortunate that Zimbabwean culture had been eroded by globalisation.
Nkala was speaking during a public meeting held at Mkoba Hall in Mkoba Village Two suburb in Gweru by the Senate HIV and Aids thematic committee.
The Senate wanted to get the views of members of the public on the issue of allowing children aged 12 years and above access to contraceptives.
Nkala, who is aged 22 and has a 12- year old younger sister, said the very idea that her sister should be allowed access to contraceptives was repulsive. She said:
<blockquote>The main problem is that we have allowed our culture to be eroded by Western culture. Now children are walking naked and we say it’s their right.
Children are allowed to kiss each other in schools and on the roads and parents turn a blind eye, we watch and applaud them and we say it’s their right.
Corporal punishment was removed, and we have these rights we give them. As parents or guardians, we need rights too to protect them hence I am against the idea of giving contraceptives to children without our consent.</blockquote>
She added that local authorities like Gweru City Council should provide recreational facilities such as safe spaces and playgrounds to keep young people’s minds off sex.

Youth Coach Says 12-year-olds Should Not Access Contraceptives

The Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) has revealed that the country is facing an acute shortage of contraceptives, with current stocks likely to run out next month.
ZNFPC director Munyaradzi Murwira told NewsDay that male and female condoms are the only forms of contraception that are adequate. He said:
<blockquote>There is an acute shortage of family planning pills, Depo Provera and Implanon, but we, however, have adequate male and female condoms.</blockquote>
Murwira also revealed that ZNFPC is working with donors and suppliers to expedite shipments with some commodities expected in the coming weeks.
Zimbabwe has a contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) of 67% and an unmet need of 10% that is the proportion of women aged 15-49 using family planning. This is a significant improvement from 2010 when it was at 59 per cent.

Zimbabwe Runs Out Of Contraceptives

Zimbabwe has become the first African country to meet the 2020 deadline to ensure that at least 68 per cent of women have access to family planning services.
This was revealed by Zimbabwe National Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) regional manager Blessed Gumbi during the World Contraception Day commemorations last Thursday. He said:
<blockquote>We have done so well as a country and managed to meet the 2020 target before the deadline. However, we still have challenges with men who make it difficult for women to access family planning services which often leads to unwanted pregnancies.</blockquote>
Gumbi however, expressed concern over some men who have refused to fully embrace the use of contraceptives.
He assured men that it has been scientifically proven that none of these contraceptive methods leads to infertility.
