A 23-year-old tout from Chivhu, Simbarashe Guvheya, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for engaging in sexual intercourse with a minor, in his case, a 16-year-old girl.
Guvheya was found guilty of the offence stemming from an encounter with the teenager at Masasa Business on February 16, 2023.
The court heard that the girl was stranded at the shopping centre after leaving her home in Wiltshire to look for work but was unsuccessful.
Guvheya, a stranger to her, offered assistance, leading them to profess affection and agree to go to his home, where they lived together as if married for 12 days.
The situation came to light when the teenager sought advice at Masasa Police Station, resulting in Guvheya’s arrest. During his trial at the Chivhu magistrate court, he pleaded guilty to the charges.
During the pre-sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Guvheya was HIV positive, a condition he had since birth.
Despite being aware of his status, he engaged in unprotected sex with the girl, which led to her becoming pregnant and abandoning her job search. Fortunately, after testing twice, the teenager was confirmed to be HIV-negative.
The magistrate subsequently referred the case to the High Court for review. Following a thorough examination, High Court Judge Justice Lucy Mungwari concluded that the trial court’s proceedings aligned with principles of real and substantial justice. She said (via H-Metro):

Moreover, the accused explicitly disclosed that he was aware of his HIV-positive status at the time of the offense, as he was born with the condition.
Finally, I conclude that there are no unique or exceptional circumstances in the offender’s personal situation.
Despite being twenty-three years old and a youthful offender, he is still an adult who knowingly jeopardised the victim’s health by exposing her to the risk of infection.
As previously mentioned, in the absence of special circumstances, the court’s discretion is restricted, and it is mandated by law to impose the minimum sentence of ten years.
Accordingly, the offender is sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.

A 23-year-old man named Simbarashe Guvheya was sent to jail for 10 years for having sex with a 16-year-old girl. They met at a shop, and the girl was looking for work. The girl got pregnant, but she tested negative for HIV. The man knew he had HIV but still had unprotected sex with her. The High Court found that he deserved the 10-year jail sentence. The man is in trouble because he knowingly put the girl's health at risk.

Tout Sentenced To 10 Years In Jail For Bedding 16-year-old Girl

Eighteen villagers from Chivhu who settled on Dagbreck Farm have been sentenced to eight months in prison each, by Magistrate Sharon Nxongo.
<a href="https://masvingomirror.com/18-chivhu-illegal-settlers-jailed/">The Mirror</a> reported that the villagers had settled on the farm without authority from the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development.
However, the magistrate commuted the sentence to 140 hours of community service at different Government departments including Chivhu Magistrates Court, Runyararo Primary School and ZRP Chivhu.
The 18 are Milton Mupfumbi, Blessing Komba, Bright Komba, Jimu Simbi Tinotenda Mutawani, Henry Maphosa, Hillary Shura, Micah Maguma, Miriam Chikodza, Agnes Bhiri, Pepukai Mutsvakiwa, Even Munhande, Lovemore Tipedze, Aisha Murindango, Mercy Takura, Miriam Takura, Memory Kwashirai and Taruvinga Mashata.
It was the State case that the 18 unlawfully occupied Dagbreck Farm in January 2014 and proceeded to build homes and practised farming on gazetted land.
The ZANU PF-led government embarked on a land resettlement programme around the year 2000 but hundreds of thousands of people who need farmland were overlooked.
Instead, the elite, their relatives and associates grabbed most of the prime land, with reports claiming that some individuals took several farms each.

18 Chivhu Illegal Settlers Sentenced

A 17-year-old boy, John Mbano of Chivhu, was found dead in a bushy area after being kidnapped by unknown assailants.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, confirmed the incident, which occurred last Saturday. Mbano and two other commuters had boarded a silver Toyota Noah at Chivhu Chicken Inn, intending to travel to Masvingo. Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200011680/chivhu-teen-dies-in-kidnap-robbery-incident">NewsDay:</a>

The now-deceased has since been identified as John Mbano of Chivhu.
He (Mbano) and two other commuters boarded a silver Toyota Noah at Chivhu Chicken Inn going to Masvingo.
Mahoko said the vehicle already had four occupants, including the driver, three males and one female.
On reaching a point near Blue Gate, the driver made a U-turn heading back to Chivhu using a detour.

Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko stated that the vehicle carrying John Mbano and two other passengers was stopped in a bush by four unknown assailants who demanded money and valuables from them.
The assailants tied their victims’ hands using cables and assaulted them.
The victims were robbed of US$285, R100, two cellphones, and groceries before being dumped in a nearby bush.
A police search led to the discovery of Mbano’s body in the bush with multiple stab wounds.

Teenager Found Dead After Kidnapping By Unknown Assailants

The government has declared the Timboom Coaches bus accident a national disaster.
The accident occurred on Sunday morning at the 5-kilometre peg along the Chivhu-Murambinda Road.
The Harare-bound Timboom Coaches bus that had 40 passengers on board veered off the road and crashed, killing 12 people on the spot including the driver.
Another passenger died while admitted to Chivhu Hospital.
On Monday, 17 April, Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona toured the accident scene.
He was accompanied by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Mashonaland East Apolonia Munzverengi, officials from his ministry, and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, among others.
Mhona also visited the injured who are admitted at Chivhu Hospital and also consoled the bereaved families.
On Sunday, the ZRP said they were yet to ascertain the cause of the accident but preliminary investigations indicate it was caused by speeding.
In recent years in Zimbabwe road accidents have been attributed to speeding, overtaking error, not giving way, following too close, reversing error, negligent pedestrian/ cyclists and fatigue.

Timboom Coaches Bus Accident Declared A National Disaster

Emelda Marizani, a woman from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chivhu">Chivhu</a> who killed all her four children in cold blood in 2020 has been sentenced to life imprisonment by High Court judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi.
Marizani was charged with four murder counts and given four life sentences, <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/just-in-chivhu-killer-mom-slapped-with-four-life-sentences-judge-calls-her-a-highly-dangerous-criminal-undeserving-of-a-second-chance/">NewZimbabwe</a> reported.
The judge described the murder as heartbreaking and shocking and called for a stiffer penalty.
Mutevedzi sentenced her to life imprisonment saying:

The murder was committed in aggravated circumstances; it was a mass murder where the accused killed the deceased simultaneously over a relative period of time without cooling off and on an enclosed geographical location.
She also used multiple fatal methods to kill her victims after she admitted to lacing four cups with poison and instructing her children to drink it. She chose two extreme modus operandi used by murderers.
Cutthroat method was savage and brutal whilst poisoning is considered a more humane way to take life.
Accused is a highly dangerous criminal, the court will show little to no mercy to a mother who butchers her own children.
</blockquote>
Mutevedzi added that Marizani does not deserve a second chance or to go back to society.

Chivhu Woman Gets Life Imprisonment For Killing Her Children

The woman from Chivhu, Chikomba District in Mashonaland East Province, who beheaded her four children in 2020 to spite her cheating husband, has been found guilty on four counts of murder by High Court judge Justice Munamato Mutevedzi, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/chivhu-mom-who-killed-four-of-her-children-convicted/">reported ZimLive</a>.
Emelda Marizani, who was pregnant with her fifth child at the time the crime was committed, murdered all her four daughters to “hurt” her husband Lameck Brande.
In her defence, Marizani argued that she was mentally unstable when she committed the murders.
But Justice Mutevedzi ruled that there was evidence proving that she planned to kill her children long before the incident.
In her statement and oral evidence, Marizani said she wanted to leave Brande “with nothing they had accumulated together”. Ruled the judge:

The accused admits in her statement and oral evidence that she killed her children to spite her husband.
She wanted to leave him with nothing they had accumulated together.
It is very unfortunate she considered her children to be part of their acquisitions.
</blockquote>
Marizani and Brande’s marriage was reportedly on the rocks and prosecutors proved the couple had been fighting all the time.
Brande was allegedly involved in an adulterous relationship with Chelsea Bepete.
Marizani confronted Bepete who told her that she was now pregnant from a relationship with Brande.
Bepete is also alleged to have told Marizani that she was no longer loved because she was failing to bear a son.
Earlier on the day of the murders, Marizani had fought with her husband over Bepete’s issue.
She then went home where she poisoned her daughters’ drink before she cut off their heads and set the house on fire.
Marizani then took funeral policy papers for her children and surrendered herself at the police station.
It was established that the up-to-date funeral policy was for her four children which did not include herself and her husband.
The husband was also not aware of the policy.
Marizani gave birth to her fifth child while in jail. Ruled Justice Mutevedzi:

If she indeed wanted to kill herself, she had all the opportunity but she did not put more effort on that as she did with her children.
She gave herself an opportunity to live. She said she looked for a wire to hang herself.
She could have used any other alternative or would have let herself be consumed in the inferno she had started.
She was clearly afraid of the fire. It is our view that she used her children as pawns to spite her husband. She killed them thinking she will then get even with her husband and girlfriend.
The way she explained everything is shocking and it becomes difficult to accept that she wasn’t aware of what she was up to.
We accept that shedding tears is not the only way to express emotional pain. Your actions typify a woman who is heartless.
One can kill her own child but when one goes to kill four, it shows that she was determined to do so.
From the totality, we conclude that the accused failed to prove she was mentally handicapped when she killed her children. The medical evidence was totally unreliable.
It is on that basis that we are convinced that the State has managed to prove its case beyond any reasonable doubt and the accused is found guilty and convicted in all four murder counts.

Marizani will be sentenced on Friday.

Chivhu Woman Who Killed Her Four Daughters Convicted

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> is investigating a plane crash, which happened in the Featherstone area in Chivhu on Monday afternoon. 
National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi">Paul Nyathi</a>, confirmed the crash and said two people were injured and were rushed to Beatrice Hospital where they were stabilised. He told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/two-survive-plane-crash/">The Herald</a>:

Two people on the plane survived the crash and were taken to Beatrice Hospital. They were transferred to another health facility for further treatment.
</blockquote>
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the police were by late last night still working on establishing more details on the plane crash. 
The latest information suggests that the plane had five people on board and all survived.

Five People Survive Plane Crash In Chivhu

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced that three children from Chivhu died after eating poisonous mushrooms. Two children received treatment and survived, according to a police statement obtained by Pindula News. Reads the report:

<h2>DEATH OF THREE JUVENILES DUE TO MUSHROOM POISONING IN CHIVHU</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating the circumstances in which three girls, Prudence Mhangami (12), Leona Zarura (2 years 8 months) and Mazvita Taderera (1 year 8 months) of Village 10 Magamba, Chivhu, died after consuming some mushrooms, while Tatenda Mhangami (9) and Tendai Mhangami (7) survived after being treated at Sally Mugabe Hospital, Harare.
The Police got to know about this sad incident through the media as the relatives had not bothered to report.
Prudence Mhangami died on 14th January 2023 whilst admitted at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, while Leona Zarura and Mazvita Taderera died upon admission at Sally Mugabe Hospital.
The post-mortem conducted on the bodies of Mazvita Taderera and Leona Zarura concluded that death was due to mushroom poisoning, while post mortem report for Prudence Mhangami is yet to be received.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned that Prudence Mhangami’s relatives intended to bury her without a post-mortem being conducted, as such the police had no option but to stop the burial process to allow the post-mortem to be conducted. 
Investigations carried by the Police have established that on 10th January 2023 the victims, who were staying with their grandparents, consumed some mushrooms which were picked by Prudence Mhangami from a neighbouring homestead, despite her grandfather warning her against cooking the mushrooms.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores parents and guardians to monitor the food being consumed by children in order to safeguard their lives. The public should not pick wild mushrooms indiscriminately without due regard for safety. We urge traditional leaders, school authorities and communities to educate both adults and the youths on the dangers of picking mushrooms in bushes.
In view of this unfortunate incident, the Police urges the public to be cautious with mushroom vendors who offer wares along street corners and highways.

Three Kids Die After Eating Poisonous Mushrooms

A Chivhu woman who beheaded her four children in 2020 recently told the court that she wanted to kill herself and feared that they were going to be abused by a stepmother after she was gone.
Emelda Marizanhi is accused of feeding her four children with rat poison before cutting off their heads following a dispute with her husband.
Through her lawyers, Marizanhi told the court that she was mentally unstable when she committed the offence.
She argued that her condition is hereditary since there is a history of mental illness in her family.
Marizanhi’s mother, Marai Mupini and her maternal aunt, Eunice Mutukwa also defended her telling the court she was in fact a loving mother.
Relatives also claimed that there is a history of mental illness from her paternal side.
As the trial concluded on Wednesday, Marizanhi said she did not regret the crimes.
In her defence, she told the court that she killed her children to save her children from the abuse they were going to get from their father’s new wife after her death. She said:

I also wanted to die. That day I first took rat poison… the pills and called my children to take them as well before I instructed them to go to bed.
I was not breathing well and I realised there were survival chances; so to avoid that, I had to finish them (my children) off.
So, I decided to cut their throats with a knife.
I did this because I did not want my children to suffer and grow up miserable in my absence as I did when I was growing up.

Marizanhi also told the court her own parents separated when she was still very young and had a tough upbringing.
She said when she met her husband Lameck Brande, the two were happy in their earlier days of marriage and acquired immovable and movable properties including a flourishing business. She added:

We started from scratch. We had nothing when we got married but we were happy.
The problems started when we started amassing wealth. My husband became abusive and was involved in extramarital affairs with several women.
</blockquote>
She then decided to kill herself the time she was expecting her fifth child.
Marizanhi however did not die from an attempted suicide after she was rushed to the hospital for treatment.
A State witness, Dr Patrick dismissed claims that Marazanhi was unstable when she killed her children as supported by his medical affidavit.

Chivhu Woman Says She Killed Her Four Daughters To Protect Them

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has appealed to members of the public who may help in the identification of three accident victims. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi says the accidents happened in Harare and Chivhu. Reads the statement:

<h2>APPEAL FOR INFORMATION IN RESPECT OF THREE UNIDENTIFIED BODIES</h2>
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing to the public with missing relatives to assist in identifying two victims, a man and a woman, who died in two separate road traffic accidents which occurred in Harare and Chivhu.
The first victim Is a male adult, approximately 30 years old, who was hit by an unknown motorist along Rotten Row Road, opposite Harare Magistrate court in Harare on 21st July 2022 at around 2145 hours. The body is at Parirenyahva Hospital mortuary.
The second victim is a female adult who was a passenger in a Freightliner truck which was involved in a road traffic accident at the 106 km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on.25th June 2022 at around 1930 hours. The victim died on the spot and the body is at Chivhu Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating a case in which the body of an unknown woman was found floating in Inyagui River, Juni, Murewa, on 20th May 2022. The body, which was in its advanced stage of decomposition, had a yellow floral dress and a black top. The body is at Murewa Hospital mortuary. The Police appeals for Information which can assist to identify the victim. Police Appeal For Information For Identification Of Three Accident Victims

A 32-year-old <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Epworth">Epworth</a> man was Wednesday sentenced to 20 years in jail at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chivhu">Chivhu</a> Magistrates Court for stealing and vandalising ZESA infrastructure.
Wellie Maribha, who was on the police wanted list in Hwedza, was arrested on Monday at his girlfriend’s place in Epworth, southeast of Harare.
NewsDay Zimbabwe reports that Maribha was being sought for vandalism of transformers and theft of copper cables at Chimowa primary and secondary schools in Hwedza.
ZESA Holdings spokesperson <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/George_Manyaya">George Manyaya</a> said the power utility was working with law enforcement agents and communities to fight infrastructure damage. Manyaya said:

Meanwhile, three Harare men were on Monday caught vandalising ZESA infrastructure as they dug up a three-core armoured cable in Mt Hampden.

Copper cable theft has grown into a pandemic in Zimbabwe, particularly for the electricity, telecommunications, and railway parastatals.
Organisations such as ZESA, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/TelOne">TelOne</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Econet_Wireless_Zimbabwe">Econet</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Telecel_Zimbabwe">Telecel</a>, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/NetOne_Zimbabwe">NetOne</a>, and the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/National_Railways_of_Zimbabwe">National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)</a> tell tales of loss of business due to the effects of copper cable theft that has been spreading uncontrolled.
Households too are affected as they are left to spend days without power and sometimes asked to pull resources together for the purchase of copper cables.
ZESA is losing more than $2 million annually to copper cable thefts and vandalism of transformers. 
It is suspected most of the stolen cables are being smuggled to South Africa and they are then shipped further to countries that use the metal in the construction and manufacturing industries.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa early this year said the government is crafting legislation to <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/03/22/copper-cable-thieves-will-be-shot-on-sight-president-mnangagwa/">allow law officers to shoot to kill</a> all who will be seen stealing copper cables.

Copper Thief Sentenced To 20 Years In Prison

A Zimbabwean court has criticised some Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers and ruled that foul play could have been committed which led to the death of Sharai Mukaro, a Chivhu woman.
Mukaro, a mother of two, died in September 2021 from injuries sustained as a result of the severe assault and torture inflicted upon her by Detective Steven Dondo and some police officers in a “Darkroom” at Chivhu Police Station, where she was detained after being accused of stealing US$1 000.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights report that on 30 March 2022, Chivhu Magistrate Henry Sande began presiding over an inquiry to establish the cause of death of Mukaro.
Detective Dondo testified and claimed that Mukaro’s husband Pastor Abinel Mukaro had told him that she had some heart problems.
However, three witnesses namely Pastor Mukaro, the deceased’s husband, her daughter Ivy Mukaro and Pastor Mukaro’s workmate Pastor Nelson Chirambadare, told the court that Sharai was assaulted under her feet by ZRP officers while in police custody. 
According to a medical report, the cause of the death of Sharai was a result of blood clots and indicated that several blows were inflicted upon her.
The inquest was only instituted after Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights issued a notice of intention to sue Detective Dondo, ZRP Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Hon. Kazembe Kazembe.
 In the notice of intention to sue, Chinopfukutwa stated that Dondo fatally assaulted Mukaro after having threatened to kill her.
Chinopfukutwa protested that the conduct of police officers who tortured Mukaro to death is a breach of the constitutional obligation of the Police Service to protect and secure the lives of Zimbabwean citizens as provided for under Section 219(1)(c) of the Constitution.
The human rights lawyer also formally requested that the criminal investigations on the death of the deceased which were being handled by police officers from Chivhu Police Station be conducted by law enforcement agents from another police station. 
He said he does not reasonably expect police officers at Chivhu Police Station to investigate themselves and accord justice to his clients, who are Pastor Mukaro and Ivy.
On Friday 8 July 2022, Magistrate Sande found that there is a possibility of foul play having been committed by some ZRP officers which led to the death of Mukaro.
Magistrate Sande ruled that there is a likelihood that the late Mukaro was assaulted by some police officers based at the Criminal Investigations Department at ZRP Chivhu Police Station.
The Magistrate noted that investigations to ascertain the death of Mukaro were done unprocedurally as they had been conducted by the same ZRP officers stationed at Chivhu Police Station who are being implicated in causing the death of the late Chivhu woman and hence the probe must be done by police officers outside Mashonaland East province.
Magistrate Sande, who noted that according to the testimony of the medical doctor, assault under the soles of feet was done to conceal evidence of assault, said there is need to investigate if the offence of culpable homicide was not committed.

Wanted Person Alert: Tinashe Nyamande Over Theft Of $63m

A self-proclaimed prophet from Chivhu, Mashonaland East, has lost his appeal against his conviction for unlawful entry and malicious damage to property.
Tinashe Mukote was handed an 18-year jail sentence after he connived with his wife to break into their landlord’s house, where they stole cash and other valuables.
Mukote later set the house on fire to destroy the evidence.
The self-styled prophet used some of the stolen money to purchase a vehicle and some to spoil his wife and relatives.
Mukote was convicted by the Chivhu Magistrate on 29 October 2021. He was sentenced to 8 years in prison for the unlawful entry, and 10 years for malicious damage to property.
He then approached the High Court seeking to note his appeal out of time but Justice Benjamin Chikowero ruled that the appeal was of no use.
Mukote was linked to the offence after some of his landlord’s belongings were found in his bedroom. Reads the judge’s findings:

The recovery of the complainant’s driver’s licence from the applicant’s bedroom, a black satchel, English Exercise book, Covid exemption letter, in respect of the complainant, as well as the complainant’s CABS bank account statement, and a Sunrise Readers book from Moses Mafukidze’s residence (where the applicant had taken them to) inexorably connected the applicant to the commission of the offences.
There was overwhelming evidence against the applicant.
The intended appeal against the conviction is certain to fail.

Chivhu Self-proclaimed Prophet Loses Appeal

Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco) said part of the US$100 million worth of equipment for its steel plant in Chivhu that arrived in Durban, South Africa, will be transported to Zimbabwe by 1 000 heavy trucks. The company said:

This is part of the US$100 million worth of the steel plant’s equipment and machinery that will be brought into the country after docking in South Africa (and will be carried) by 1 000 haulage trucks.

The first batch of the equipment and machinery comprises general blast furnace components.

Disco is constructing a US$1 billion steel-manufacturing plant in Manhize, Chivhu, Mashonaland East.

The Government is working on awarding town statuses to three settlements in Mashonaland East Province, which currently has just one town, Marondera.
Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo said a survey of Chivhu, Murewa and Mutoko centres, which are under rural district councils, showed that they are expanding.
Moyo revealed this while addressing ZANU PF members during the Mashonaland East Provincial Coordinating Committee meeting held in Marondera over the weekend. He said:

The President has asked us to make a survey on areas which are growing and can be awarded town statuses and can have a town board. We have come up with Chivhu, Murewa and Mutoko.

Darlington Manjokota (28) is admitted to Chivhu General Hospital after Police in the town unleashed dogs on him on Wednesday last week.
Medical sources told The Mirror that Manjokota’s hand may be amputated.

The Policeman who unleashed the dog on Manjokota identified as Taurai Ruziwa accused Manjokota of throwing a stone at him.
 National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Mirror that he was not aware of the incident.
Chivhu Residents and Ratepayers Association (CHRRA) chairman, Collen Zvarevashe expressed disgust at the excessive abuse by Police. 
The Mirror visited Manjokota at Chivhu General Hospital where he is admitted. He told the publication:

I was leaving the bar and suddenly people started fleeing in different directions. I ran away trying to find a place to hide but I did not realise that I was going in the direction of the Police.
They then let loose their dog and it attacked me. It dragged me 8 metres towards the police officers. They picked me up and dumped me at the hospital.
I confronted Ruziwa the next morning over the matter and he threatened to throw me into the cells. He accused me of having thrown a stone at the Police.

He added that CHRRA responded swiftly with medical bills but the immediate decision was for his hand to be amputated. Said Manjokota:

Am not sure whether I am now safe from that since I am receiving treatment from the hospital ward.

Zvarevashe who is already mobilising resources to assist Manjokota said police have rendered Manjokota unable to fend for his family.

Chivhu Resident Could Be Amputated After Police Unleashed Dogs At Him

A vendor in Chivhu was severely mauled by police dogs on Sunday and then made to pay a fine of ZWL$1 000 for allegedly violating current Level 4 COVID-19 lockdown regulations.
Police officers on patrol allegedly unleashed dogs on Enerty Chimedza, accusing her of remaining at her vending stall after the 3:30 pm business cut off time.
Chimedza is appealing to members of the public to assist her with money to buy prescription medicine given her by the doctor for the wounds. The drugs prescribed for her treatment cost US$140.
Speaking to Masvingo Mirror, Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Simon Chazovachiii said he was yet to receive the report. He said:

I am yet to receive that report however what the police officers did is not acceptable and why could they hide the Memo pertaining to such a tragic incident.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) spokesperson Kumbirai Mafunda condemned the police brutality describing the incident as a true sign of human rights abuse by the law enforcement agencies. He said:

We condemn this kind of brutality by the police on this poor woman.
We are concerned about increasing cases across the country where the police are not executing their duty professionally.
They should not take the law into their hands and they should respect human rights.

Chimedza said that vendors at the market stall close at 3.30 pm but they leave one person to guard their wares until 6 pm when a security guard comes for the night shift. She said:

On this day I was on duty to guard the wares until the guard came. Police details found me at the market and accused me of violating COVID-19 regulations by doing business after 3. 30pm. They assaulted me before unleashing their dogs on me.

After her arrest, Chimedza was taken to Chivhu Police Station. She was made to pay ZWL$1 000 despite having been injured.
Chimedza said she was only given a letter by the police on Monday to get treatment at Chivhu General Hospital.
She went to see Chivhu General Hospital nurses on Monday and got a prescription for injections which cost US$140. The nurses told her that there were no drugs at the hospital.

Police did not bother to get her treated for the wounds and the spokesperson Chazovachiii said he was going to make a follow up on the issue.
Ward 9 Councillor Christopher Muchenje described the Police action as barbaric and lamented the concerned cops for showing no remorse for their heavy-handedness.
Meanwhile, vendors in Chivhu also accused cops of demanding sex from the women that they arrest and this is one of the conditions for getting one’s freedom.
They also accused Police in Chivhu of corruption and in particular they go around the small town taking bribes.

Police Fine Vendor $1 000 After Unleashing Dogs On Her

Forty- three vendors were vaccinated against COVID-19 at the Chivhu Town Rank on Friday and some against their wish, Masvingo Mirror reported.
The vendors were inoculated following an order given by the Deputy Minister of Health and Childcare, John Mangwiro.
Mangwiro gave the instruction when he attended a function at Chivhu District Hospital where he received personal protective equipment (PPEs) from Chandiwana Foundation.
He reportedly said all vendors must be vaccinated in order to keep trading. Mangwiro also warned farmers that they will not be allowed to deliver their maize to the Grain Marketing Board if they were not vaccinated. He said:
<blockquote>We want to make sure that every vendor is vaccinated because they mix with different people when selling their products.
Our District Taskforce and Joint Operations Command (JOC) should make sure that this is enforced immediately.</blockquote>
Masvingo Mirror was told by several vendors that they were being vaccinated against their will because they wanted to save their jobs.
The vendors, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals, said that a team from Chivhu District Hospital arrived and told them that there was an instruction to vaccinate all of them.
One of the vendors, who preferred to be named Mai Tee, said she was left with no choice after the instruction was given for them to be vaccinated. She said:
<blockquote>I have no choice my son, We were told that if we are not vaccinated we would be chased from our markets.
We just followed the instruction for us to continue doing business. We have families to look after.
Before I got the jab I just said… So help me God…</blockquote>

43 Chivhu Vendors Vaccinated, "Some Against Their Will"

A Chivhu woman who made headlines sometime in <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/11/11/chivhu-woman-beheads-her-4-kids-sets-home-ablaze/">November last year for killing her four children</a> following a dispute with her husband was this Thursday granted bail by the High Court.
The woman, Emelda Marazani, 29, beheaded her four children and set her home on fire before surrendering herself to the police in Highview suburb, Chivhu.
The incident around midday following what police described as a “marital dispute” with her husband, Lameck Brande.
Police reported that when Emelda Marazani’s husband left for work in the morning, she locked the children aged nine, five, three and one in the house.
She then took a rope and tied the two elder children before slitting open their throats with a knife. She also went on to kill the other two children with the knife before setting the house on fire.
Her bail has triggered a conversation on social media with some saying, like any other accused person, she is entitled to freedom until she has been proven guilty.
Others observed that the crime she allegedly committed was so gross, therefore, she was not entitled to freedom.

Chivhu Woman Who Beheaded Her Children Freed On Bail

A 40-year-old man from Chivhu sustained life-threatening injuries after he was trampled by a stray elephant on Sunday midnight while walking home.
Talent Shara from Tsaurai Village under headman Mudavanhu, in Chief Chivese’s area was rushed to Murambinda General Hospital where he is admitted.
The incident was confirmed by Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo.
Farawo revealed that Zimparks rangers were dispatched to the area to search for the marauding jumbo. He said:
<blockquote>Talent Shara (40) from Tsaurai Village under Headman Mudavanhu of Chief Chivese near Nharira Business Centre is battling for life at Murambinda hospital after being trampled by an elephant. Zimparks rangers on the ground.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Mashonaland East police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza has warned Chivhu villagers to desist from moving around aimlessly until the elephant has been located.
In 2020, Zimparks put down another stray elephant in the same area after it had destroyed crops in people’s fields.

Stray Elephant Critically Injures Chivhu Man

A 29-year-old man from Chivhu, Mashonaland East province, has been arrested for allegedly printing and selling fake COVID-19 travelling exemption letters bearing a Delta Beverages logo for US$5.
The suspect, Tatenda Mabara, of 109 Ephraim Blank Street, was arrested after police laid a trap, posing as potential clients.
According to Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza, police in Chivhu received a tip-off and proceeded to set a trap pretending that they wanted exemption letters.
Police officers contacted Mabara on the pretext that they wanted an exemption letter and he unknowingly asked the police officers to supply the details of the person who wanted the exemption letter.
On 18 January, the suspect was supplied with the details through WhatsApp and he then forwarded a soft copy of the exemption letter through one of the police operatives’ mobile phones.
The suspect then told the police to bring the US$5 or R100 payment to a bottle store in central Chivhu.
When Mabara met the police officers, he was given 100 rands and then produced two exemption letters, claiming that the issuer of the exemption letters was a Delta Beverages employee.
He was subsequently arrested and upon being interrogated, he revealed that he produced the exemption letters at his home.
A search was conducted at the suspect’s home and an HP Compaq desktop set was recovered which had soft copies of exemption letters for Chivhu Delta Beverages depot’s six employees.
Mabara also told police that he was once employed as a merchandiser at the same depot before his resignation.

Chivhu Man Arrested Over Fake Delta Beverages COVID-19 Exemption Letters

The mother who allegedly beheaded her four children last week in Chivhu before setting her home on fire told a magistrate on Friday that she did not need legal representation.
Emelda Marizani (29) appeared before Magistrate Batanai Madzingira facing murder charges.
The court was held on her hospital bedside at Chivhu General Hospital where she is recovering from a failed suicide attempt by gulping rat poison. Marizani told the court:
<blockquote>I have understood the charge read to me and everything else that has been said but I don’t need a lawyer to represent me.</blockquote>
She was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody to November 27, 2020.
Marizani’s four children were buried at the local cemetery on Saturday in her absence despite informing Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care, John Mangwiro that she wanted to witness the burial.

Woman Who Beheaded Her 4 Kids Refuses Lawyer

The father of four children who were killed by their mother in Chivhu on Tuesday, Lameck Brande, said it would have been better if his wife had killed him instead.
In an interview with The Herald in Chivhu on Thursday, Brande narrated how he was told of a fire at his Hillsview home and later saw the carnage that had been left behind by his wife Emelda Marazani. He said:
<blockquote>When I heard that the house was in flames, I was at the shop and I quickly rushed home. I looked everywhere for the children but could not see any.
Together with my friends, we managed to break burglar bars of one of the windows and I rushed in. When I entered one of the rooms, I found two of my children covered in blankets and as I tried to pull them out, I discovered that their throats were slit. Vaiva vakachekwa muhuro nebanga zvakare vaiva vatofa.
I managed to pull them out. I proceeded to the other rooms and found my two elder daughters already burnt, they were tied with a rope.
When I heard that their mother had gone out running, I drove to the police station to make a report, thinking that after making a report I will then start searching for her.
I was surprised to see her already at the police station. She told me there that she had killed our children. She then said that she had drunk poison.
In no time, she collapsed and I poured her some water and she regained consciousness. I then used my car to rush her to the hospital.</blockquote>
The couple’s children are Amanda (9), Yolander (5), Ayender (3) and Galender (1) and two of them were burnt beyond recognition.
Bande revealed that tension between them started when his wife saw a suspicious message on his phone, which also led her to destroy his mobile phones.
He said he thought the issue was over and did not suspect she would kill the children.
The four bodies are all in Chivhu General Hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Lameck Brande, the husband of the woman who killed their four children at their home in Chivhu on Wednesday said he is still to come to terms with what transpired as he never expected that his wife would harm their children.
Speaking from his Highview residence in Chivhu this Thursday, Brande said whenever he had an argument with his wife, she threatened to leave him with nothing but he never suspected that “nothing’ meant no children. He said:
<blockquote>We had our misunderstandings but they were petty. At one point during our misunderstandings, she told me that she would leave me with nothing.
I never imagined that she would go to the extent of killing our children. I am in pain.</blockquote>
Brande said the burial of the quartet will be done once all processes have been completed.
The four bodies are at Chivhu General Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.
Meanwhile, Brande’s wife, Emelda Marazani, has blamed him for the unfortunate incident though she regrets killing the children.

The woman from Chivhu who allegedly killed her four children in cold blood on Wednesday had blamed her husband for her misdeeds.
Emelda Marazani told Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care John Mangwiro that her husband, Lameck Brande provoked her when he said all the four children were not his.
Deputy Minister Mangwiro had visited Marazani at Chivhu General Hospital this afternoon where she is receiving treatment after she attempted suicide by drinking poison soon after killing her children.
Marazani told the deputy minister that she regrets killing her children. She said:
<blockquote>He said all the children were not his. Anogarondiudza kuti haaite vana vasikana asi vakomana chete (He always told me that he does not sire girls but boys only). This hurt me and yesterday he repeated that the children were not his. He is also a womaniser and that is hurting me.</blockquote>
Marazani, who is more than six months pregnant, said she will take care of her baby and protect her at all costs.

A Chivhu woman beheaded her four children and set her home on fire before surrendering herself to police on Wednesday in Highview suburb, Chivhu.
Emelda Marazani, 29, went on a murderous rampage at around midday on Wednesday following what police described as a “marital dispute” with her husband, Lameck Brande.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Marazani committed the crimes after her husband had left for work. Nyathi said:

Chivhu Woman Beheads Her 4 Kids, Sets Home Ablaze

One of the two gunmen who shot and killed a soldier in Chivhu and critically injured another was a Democratic Republic of Congo war veteran, it has emerged.
The family and friends of Elliot Chihambakwe (45), of Gutu, said the now deceased often spoke of “freeing Zimbabwe” and used his Facebook page to write of his aspirations.
Chihambakwe and his 20-year-old neighbour Ephain Jani were killed on September 6 in a gunfight with a combined team of Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers.
The firefight happened about 16km from Chivhu where a day earlier, they had shot dead Lance Corporal Lorance Mupanganyama and wounded Corporal Peter Zvirevo inside a small police cabin in the town.
The motive for the attack remains unknown.
Chihambakwe and Jani were buried in Mukandatsama Village under Chief Mazuru on September 10.
Chihambakwe left the army in 2008 and spent at least two years in Cape Town, South Africa, working as a security guard, friends and family told ZimLive.com.
A friend of Chihambakwe revealed that the now deceased nursed deep anger over the mismanagement of Zimbabwe by the ZANU PF government and always told them that one day he would free Zimbabwe. In one of his Facebook posts in November 2012, he wrote:

Chihambakwe was married and had two children.

Four government employees in the Chikomba district development co-ordinator (DDC)’s office were hauled before the courts on Thursday on allegations of stealing various items donated to victims of a hailstorm which hit Chivhu in November 2019.
Wadzanai Chikudza, Gertrude Murwa, Gladys Masaire and Farai Mabhunu pleaded not guilty to theft charges when they appeared at the Chivhu Magistrates’ Court before magistrate Batanai Madzingira for the commencement of trial.
They are being represented by lawyer Tafara Nsingo of Nsingo and Associates, and Bothwell Kativhu.
Prosecutor Mike Choto told the court that on November 28 2019, the accused connived to steal second-hand clothes and tents worth $7 600 from a consignment which had been delivered at the DDC’s office from the Department of Civil Protection.
They entered the offices where the goods were kept and allegedly selected items of their choice.
The following day, Murwa filed a police report for a break-in at her office where the donations were kept. Police investigations, however, implicated the four.
Some of the stolen goods worth $181 were found at Murwa and Masaire’s residences.

Civil Servants Arrested For Stealing Donated Clothes

An 18-year-old female Advanced Level student from Chivhu says she has turned to prostitution to raise school fees for her final term and money for university.
Mercy (not real name), told Health Times that she completed her Ordinary Level studies in 2018 in Chivhu and passed 10 subjects including Mathematics, English, and science subjects.
When coronavirus forced the closure of schools in March, Mercy came to Harare to live with her unemployed sister.
Mercy thought she could raise fees and enrol for extra lessons since she will be writing her final ‘A’ Level exams later this year.
However, her mother lost her reliable source of livelihood – vending – after the government imposed an indefinite lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Said Mercy:
<blockquote>I am from Chivhu but these days I live with my sister here in Harare. My mother’s vending business has been bad, she can no longer afford to pay for my fees. Even food, she can’t afford to feed us.
I was left with no option, I wanted money for food, school fees and to raise money for University as well.
The only easy option I found was to get into sex work since almost every other avenue seem to have been closed by the coronavirus.
I will be writing my final examinations this year and I am optimistic that I am going to pass.
I also want to go for extra lessons since I am towards writing my final examinations this year and unfortunately, I have no one to assist me financially at the moment.</blockquote>
Mercy is afraid that she may contract HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in the process as some of her clients demand unsafe sex.
She is planning to return to Chivhu on September 16. She said her first term fees were pegged at ZWL$1 210 but the new fees structure for the final term has not been shared as yet.
