The renal unit at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chitungwiza_Central_Hospital">Chitungwiza Central Hospital (CCH)</a> named after the late former President Robert Mugabe’s late first wife <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sally_Mugabe">Sally</a> has been transformed into a five-bed private ward after years of being useless.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2022/07/sally-mugabe-renal-unit-disappears/">NewsDay</a> reports that the unit tumbled and disappeared years ago.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sally_Mugabe">Sally Mugabe</a> Renal Training Institute officially opened by President Robert Mugabe in 2011 following its establishment in 2008 had eight dialysis machines that served at least 16 people per day. 
By 2015 CCH was offering kidney renal dialysis for free, while other hospitals were charging between US$250 and US$370 for single dialysis secession.
The renal unit collapsed amid plans to start kidney transplants under the banner of the Sally Mugabe Kidney Transplantation Unit announced in 2018 by Moyo. This initiative was sponsored by Mimosa Platinum Mine.
Some dialysis machines were reportedly decommissioned into store rooms while some were transferred to <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Parirenyatwa_Hospital">Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.</a>
CCH board public relations and marketing subcommittee chairperson Lameck Chibvongodze told hospital stakeholders recently that the renal unit was now a private ward. Chibvongodze said:

You know there was an attempt to do kidney transplant and management here. Why can’t we make (the Renal Unit) a private ward rather making it a white elephant? It was opened and it is just opposite the intensive care unit. It is not like the hospital has been privatized, but it is just a facility for those who want to enjoy their privacy. It attracts money that can sustain the hospital.

A CCH employee told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2022/07/sally-mugabe-renal-unit-disappears/">NewsDay</a> that dialysis stopped when Moyo was still the chief executive, and some specialists ended up clandestinely using the facilities following its closure. Said the employee:
<blockquote>
Right now if a patient gets admitted to the private ward, they pay an equivalent to US$50 per night instead of $150 paid in other wards. It was a better way of collecting revenue because the building was just idle. It has about five beds and every person will be in his or her own room.

The only government institutions with dialysis services left are Parirenyatwa and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Sally_Mugabe_Central_Hospital">Sally “Harare” Mugabe hospital</a>, which, however, do not cater for HIV-positive people.

Chitungwiza's Kidney Unit Named After Sally Mugabe Transformed Into Private Ward

A <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chitungwiza_Central_Hospital">Chitungwiza Central Hospital</a> memo on the allocation of ballpoint pens to doctors, nurses, and the rest of staff has set tongues wagging with some observers saying the situation illustrates how standards have deteriorated at the national level.
The memo, issued by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Chiwanga, stated that the staff would be given two pens after every three months. Reads the memo:

Commenting on the memo, Ali Naka, Ali Naka a political activist and Pan Africanist who is allegedly working with the Rwanda government said:

Chitungwiza Central Hospital is a Government institution that opened in 1984 as a provincial hospital and was upgraded to a central hospital in September 2005. 
It is a 500 bedded hospital. The hospital attained ISO (International Organization of Standardization) in 2008.

Chitungwiza Hospital Memo On Allocation Of Pens To Doctors And Nurses Sets Tongues Wagging

The minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Sevices, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa on Tuesday announced that the central government had initiated the process of paying salaries of health workers from all local government authorities.
Addressing a post-Cabinet media briefing, Mutsvangwa said the move was meant to centralise the payment of essential services in order to ensure timely payment. Said the minister:

This is in line with the government’s decision to centralise the payment of essential services in order to ensure timely payment.
To smoothen implementation of the transfer of the health workers, Cabinet resolved that going forward, the implementation of the Cabinet directive be made in a manner that allows the complete absorption of health professionals from all urban local authorities, starting with Chitungwiza, followed by Harare and then moving on to the remaining local authorities.

Mutsvangwa said the adhoc inter-ministerial committee led by Public Service minister Paul Mavima was given a month to engage municipalities in order to deal with issues such as outstanding salaries, conditions of service such as funeral assistance, medical insurance and accommodation.
Minister Mutsvangwa also said measures were being put in place for the City of Harare to speed the implementation of the Cabinet decision by transferring 368 health professionals.
Meanwhile, 60 out of the 65 nurses in Chitungwiza have already been transferred from the municipality’s payroll to the Salary Service Bureau.

Central Govt Moves To Pay Salaries Of Health Workers From All Councils

The Cabinet has announced that nurses at Chitungwiza Munifacility ad Harare City Council have been placed under the Public Service Commission and will be paid through Salary Service Bureau (SSB).
The development was announced by Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services minister, Senator Monica Mutsvangwa during this Tuesday’s Post-Cabinet briefing in Harare. Said Mutsvangwa:
<blockquote>Following the failure by Chitungwiza Municipality and Harare Council to pay nurses resulting in reduction in service delivery, Cabinet has directed that nursing staff in the two municipalities be placed under the Public Service Commission &amp; be paid through SSB.
Risk allowances for the affected workers will also be paid. Further, Cabinet tasked the Minister of Finance to ensure the municipalities account fully for the resources that they were allocated for Covid19 response.</blockquote>

The two local authorities have witnessed mass desertion of health caregivers who cited poor remuneration and potential exposure to the Coronavirus.

Chitungwiza And Harare Council Nurses Now Paid Through SSB

Fifty babies were born on Christmas Day at Harare’s three main hospitals, Sally Mugabe Central Hospital, Chitungwiza Central Hospital and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
Sally Mugabe Central Hospital recorded 22 deliveries, followed by Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals’ Mbuya Nehanda maternity wing, where 20 babies were born while Chitungwiza Central Hospital had 13 births.
Sally Mugabe Central Hospital matron Mrs Dade Pedzisai said a set of twins were among the babies delivered at the hospital. Said Mrs Pedzisai:
“The first delivery was recorded at 12 midnight on Christmas Day,” said Mrs Pedzisai.
<blockquote>We had a total of 22 babies and of these, 15 were boys while seven were girls and among them was a set of twins.
We have discharged all mothers, except for seven who delivered through operations.
We usually keep them for at least four days before we can discharge them.
We did not record any cases of complications but we have one baby who had breathing problems, but he is now stable.</blockquote>
Parirenyatwa public relations manager, Mr Linos Dhire, said 11 girls and nine boys were delivered at the institution.
Chitungwiza Hospital spokesperson Mrs Audrey Tasanarwo said a total of 13 babies – seven boys and six girls, were born at the institution on Christmas Day.
She added that there were no complications during any of the deliveries.

Staffers at Harare Hospital (Sally Mugabe Hospital) and Chitungwiza Hospital are reportedly taking bribes from desperate travelers wishing to travel out of the country and issuing them fake COVID-19 certificates without conducting tests, The Heralds.
The syndicate which reportedly involves laboratory staff, nurses, and security guards at both hospitals is charging between $20 and $40 for a test that usually costs anything between $60 and $70 at approved laboratories.
The matter came to light when the publication embarked on an investigation following a tip-off. 4 reporters were deployed to both hospitals where they discovered they could obtain the COVID-19 certificates from the syndicates.
The reporters managed to get the COVID-19 free certificate from the syndicate without being tested and after just paying $20.
When contacted for comment the Deputy Health Minister Dr. John Mangwiro said those who are involved in the scandal will face the full wrath of the law:

Harare And Chitungwiza Hospital Staffers Issuing Fake COVID-19 Certificates - Report

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chitungwiza" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chitungwiza</a> General is reported to be operating normally after 19 of its dismissed 20 doctors returned to resume their duties.
The hospital’s chief executive officer, Dr Enock Mayida confirmed that the 19 doctors who were been fired had rejoined the 17 consultant doctors who provide specialist services to the hospital and had never declared incapacitation.
All the other central hospitals are also operational, contrary to reports on social media, although they continue to operate well below capacity.
Harare Central Hospital chief executive officer Dr Tinashe Dobbie told reporters that the hospital was never closed and no patients had been turned away.
Meanwhile, officials from <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Parirenyatwa_Group_of_Hospitals" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals</a> said they were still compiling figures on the number of doctors who have resumed duties by Monday.

More than 80 junior doctors are reported to have returned to work on Monday across the country, with another 282 expected to join them by January 2020.

"Leaked Audit Memo" Exposes Massive Corruption At Chitungwiza Hospital When Health Minister Was CEO

Chitungwiza Central Hospital has announced the dismissed almost all the doctors following the disciplinary hearing which found them guilty of absenting themselves from work. In a memo dated 14 November 2019 addressed to all directors, doctors, principal nursing officer and all wards, the medical institution upheld the dismissal of the doctors. FULL TEXT: Chitungwiza Central Hospital Fires Almost All Doctors Over Strike

Ongoing exercise to bring sanity to public health institutions have resulted in the suspension of Chitungwiza Central Hospital director Dr. Patrick Dhliwayo by the government with immediate effect. The government has also transferred principal nursing officer Mrs. Mirriam Mangeya over misconduct allegations.
Dr. Dhliwayo was suspended for allegedly verbally abusing fellow doctors. Last year, he was sentenced to six months imprisonment with an option of a fine after he was found guilty of physically assaulting nurses at Zengeza Clinic. Meanwhile, Mangeya has been transferred to head office awaiting transition to a new work station.
Dhliwayo’s charge sheet signed by the Acting Secretary for Health Dr. Gibson Mhlanga reads:

Chitungwiza Hospital Director Suspended Over Abuse Of Workmates

New Minister of Health and Child Care, Obadiah Moyo <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/09/07/full-list-of-president-emmerson-mnangagwas-post-election-cabinet-ministers/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">who was appointed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday</a>, has been alleged to be a fraud who fabricated academic qualifications he does not possess. This was revealed by online publication Zimlive.com which quoted diplomatic cables sent by the United States Embassy.
One such cable from 2008, which was leaked by whistleblowing website, Wikileaks reads,
<blockquote>Mr Moyo told us that drug supplies and infrastructure have declined in recent years, and foreign currency is needed to replenish stocks. In the meeting with donors and other CEOs on November 18, Mr Moyo began his remarks by first explaining that the problem is a lack of cash because the RBZ cannot print enough, and he asked donors to support the hospitals and health infrastructure in a “big way”. (NOTE: Moyo’s business card indicates he has both a PhD and a medical degree. After our initial meeting, we learned that he earned neither. Rather, he was Sally Mugabe’s dialysis technician at Parirenyatwa throughout her long struggle with a kidney disease. Moyo does not seem to be registered with the Medical and Dental Practitioners Council of Zimbabwe (MDPCZ) although his predecessor David Parirenyatwa is listed together with details about his medical qualifications. Without the MDPCZ registration, Moyo’s pathology laboratory in Harare is not operating according to the law.

New Minister Of Health Alleged To Have Fabricated Qualifications

The Chitungwiza Central Hospital has published a list of 34 people who died and have been unclaimed at the mortuary for almost 12 months. The Hospital is appealing to relatives of the deceased to come forward and claim the bodies. It warned that people have 21 days to claim the bodies before it conducts a pauper burial.  Some of the bodies are those of people who died in Old People’s Homes.

THE FOLLOWING DECEASED PERSONS HAVE BEEN UNCLAIMED IN THE CHITUNGWIZA MORTUARY FROM 13TH APRIL, 2016 TO 31 DECEMBER, 2017. THE HOSPITAL IS THEREFORE MAKING ITS LAST APPEAL TO THE RELATIVES OR MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC OF THE DEARLY DECEASED PERSONS TO COME FORWARD AND CLAIM THE BODIES AND GIVE THEMA DECENT BURIAL

Matrons and nurses in Chitungwiza called off a strike and resumed working on Tuesday after meeting with management. The nurses had started their strike on Friday over resource shortages.
In an interview with The Herald, Chitungwiza Central Hospital’s chief executive officer Dr Obadiah Moyo said Government had availed a $60 000 rescue package that will cater for pharmaceuticals, food and other provisions. Said Dr Moyo:
<blockquote>We have had a situation at the hospital where our nursing staff went on strike over shortage of resources. The situation was resolved after we convened a meeting with them and this follows another emergency meeting last Thursday with the Ministry of Health and Child Care permanent secretary, Dr Gerald Gwinji, to request for more resources for the hospital. Dr Gwinji managed to rescue the institution by allocating funds ($60 000 as a rescue package). The funds will cater for pharmaceuticals, food and other provisions.</blockquote>

Chitungwiza matrons and nurses call off strike

Doctors at Chitungwiza Central Hospital (CCH) yesterday joined their striking colleagues and nurses at public hospitals, who are demanding a review of their working conditions.
In a letter to CCH by Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association (ZHDA) dated March 1, government medical officers announced they have withdrawn their services to pile pressure on the government to review their working conditions. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>ZHDA would like to inform you that general medical officers will not be able to discharge their duties from March 1, 2017 until further notice.</blockquote>
