Driving trucks on the dilapidated Harare-Chirundu Highway has become a nightmare for drivers as robbers pounce on slow-moving trucks even in broad daylight.
Jonas Kabasa, a 41-year-old truck driver who uses the route frequently, told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200013425/highway-robbers-cause-havoc">NewsDay</a> that the highway is now regarded as a death trap for local and regional travellers.
Kabasa, who was born and raised in Chinhoyi, drives trucks from South Africa to Zambia, Malawi or the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). He said:

Of late, many travellers have been forced to sleep over along the highway, especially when travelling during the night after hitting deep gullies and potholes that are now permanent features along the way.
The road is no longer easy to travel on due to potholes.
Of late, some cars have been left on the roadside due to tyre punctures, malfunctioning engines affected by water from big potholes along the highway, especially during the rainy season.

Machete-wielding highway robbers popularly known as “Makaramata”, derived from how they get on top of a moving vehicle with ease because of the slow speeds, have also become a menace. Said Kabasa:

The Harare-Chirundu Highway is now a double tragedy for night drivers as we battle to navigate the potholed road from Chinhoyi to Chirundu which is now a death trap.
The worst is that we have to endure highway attacks by robbers, especially from Mapinga, Chikuti and Kasimure areas.

Tapera Rukambwa, a resident at Mapinga business centre said a masked robber has attacking people during the day when they stop to relieve themselves while enjoying the Mapinga scenery of the Great Dyke.
Speaking to NewsDay, a member of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from Bindura said they had to open fire to apprehend a robber a few years ago. Said the detective:

A Bindura gold dealer lost some cash after he was raided at Mapinga lay-by by the suspect.
He provided us with transport as we investigated the matter.
We ambushed the robber around the area and spotted him in the bush, but he outran us all while ignoring warning shots.
He was finally shot in the leg. He led us to the place where he keeps his loot.
He had several thousands of US dollars in stolen money.

In April, a truck bound for Zambia was robbed at Chikuti about 180km from Harare.
Two suspects, armed with machetes and knobkerries, forced the driver to stop and confronted him and three other passengers demanding money.
The truck driver was robbed of US$1 500 while we surrendered at least US$500.

Machete-wielding Robbers Target Motorists

A guide was trampled to death by an elephant on Tuesday while on a tour with a client in the Rifa Conservation Education Camp area, Chirundu.
A bull elephant ambushed Dave Winhall, a professional guide and hunter while walking through with a client in a bushy area.
Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) spokesperson Tinashe Farawo said investigations were in progress. Farawo said:
<blockquote>
There was an unfortunate incident in Rifa where a guide was attacked by an elephant that emerged from the bush and he died on the spot.
Investigations are currently underway to establish the full details of the incident. No one else was affected in the attack.
</blockquote>
The Herald reported sources as saying Winhal had people on an educational tour at the camp when the incident took place.

The Government has identified three settlements, namely Figtree, Melfort and Chirundu, as places in the country to be transformed under the smart city concept.
Addressing a forum on Zimbabwe Smart Cities and Rural Communities Infrastructure in Bulawayo this week, National Housing and Social Amenities minister Daniel Garwe said:

The Ministry of National Housing and Social Amenities has endeavoured to move with time and adopt strategies that conform to the dictates of the digitalised world and globalisation.
This has culminated in the adoption of the Smart City concept. We have prioritised three pilot projects to kick-start the whole process, that is, Melfort in Mashonaland East province, Figtree in Matabeleland South province and Chirundu in Mashonaland West province.

Garwe said the settlements would be completely new cities that are to be anchored on digitalisation and green energy where people “live, work and play”. He said:

The Smart City Concept is at the core of the Ministry’s desire to see a transformed urban setting across the length and breadth of our beautiful nation, where we are desirous to have modernly sustainable and affordable human settlements for Zimbabwe by 2030.

He said local authorities and the private sector are expected to play a critical role in making the smart city concept come to fruition. Said Garwe:
<blockquote>
Local authorities and the private sector are the prime movers of the concept when it comes to implementation and stakeholder participation.
There is an insatiable appetite in the private sector for such investment opportunities, especially from the insurance and pension funds, the financial sector, asset management entities, realtors and other investors.
… A case in point is that Bulawayo City Council is working on the regeneration of Makokoba, Mutare is working on Sakubva, Harare is working on Mbare and Victoria Falls is working on Chinotiba and the low density, to mention but a few.
We do not expect a replica of the pre-colonial Makokoba, Sakubva, Mbare or Chinotimba with the tired designs and service provision post-urban renewal.

Govt Mulls Creation Of Smart Cities

A light aircraft on a Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) mission crashed in the Zambezi Valley on Friday, killing one of the four people on board.
The Cessna 182 with two South Africans and two Zimbabweans onboard was reported missing on Friday.
A search was launched in a mountainous and densely forested area between Chirundu and the Zambezi Valley and it was only on Sunday that another pilot spotted the wreckage.
Tinashe Farawo, the ZimParks spokesperson on Sunday told ZimLive that one person died on the spot, while two were injured.
A third, described as a spotter, is reported to have walked away from the wreckage to seek help – but has not been seen or heard from since. Said Farawo:
<blockquote>The two South Africans usually help us with our wildlife management, they are experts in the field.
On this particular mission, they were following animal trackers as part of a wildlife survey.</blockquote>

Small Aircraft Crash Kills One In The Zambezi Valley

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the improvement of the North-South corridor at Hell’s Gate near Chirundu. The project is aimed at improving steep gradients on the Makuti-Chirundu section of the North-South corridor.
A statement by the Ministry of Publicity and Broadcasting Services reads:
<blockquote>President Emmerson Mnangagwa today officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the improvement of the North-South corridor (Highway No. 3) in Makuti. The road is part of the Pan African highway which is critical for domestic transportation and connects ports in South Africa and Mozambique.
The project, a Japan Grant Aid programme, aims to improve traffic safety and shorten the travelling time. Around 250 local workers will work on the project, which is expected to be completed by December 2020. Japanese experts will also transfer knowledge to their local counterparts.
The financing of the project by Japan, to the tune of US$21 million, falls under the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), which was launched in 1993 to promote Africa’s development, peace &amp; security. President Mnangagwa will attend TICAD7 this week.</blockquote>

ED Officiates At The US$21 Million Japan-financed Road Project In Makuti

Opposition politician and MDC Alliance principal Tendai Biti was briefly arrested before being released at the Chirundu border post between Zambia and Zimbabwe today. Here is an account of how it happened according to the ZRP’s Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Chirundu,

On 8 August 2018 at around 0600 hours, wanted person Tendai Luxton Biti no further particulars supplied arrived at Chirundu One Stop Border Post, Exit Side, Zambia. He was in a Toyota Hilux Double Cab, White in colour, registration number ADA7273 which was being driven by Tawanda Blessing Chitekwe NR 48-112236-H-48 DOB 14/01/82 and Residential address not supplied.
He was also in the company of two other male occupants whose identity has not been established.
Upon arrival at the border, which is geographically located across the Zambezi River on the Zambian soil, the wanted person then gave a Zambian agent their passports who avoided Zimbabwe Immigration formalities and presented the passports to Zambian Immigration Officials.
The Zambian Immigration Official grabbed the passports and informed Zimbabwe Immigration official by the name Shingirai Chimedza about the issue since Zambia Immigration was aware that accused Tendai Luxton Biti was wanted in Zimbabwe.
Members of Criminal Investigation Department, Chirundu who were manning the vehicle clearance desk on the Zambian side were also notified about the issue. The team then sought for reinforcement from the station.
The information was reacted upon by police officers and President’s Office. The accused person and his associates were approached and he strongly resisted arrest arguing that he was protected by International law since he had already crossed the Zambezi river and was in the process of applying for Asylum.
He went further to state that police officers had no right to interview him on foreign soil hence all the accused persons refused to furnish their full particulars.
At the same time, Tendai Luxton Biti shouted on top of his voice saying he was being abducted and called for assistance from Zimbabwean travellers going to Zambia numbering approximately 300 people.
Members of the public joined in and refrained security agents as they were effecting arrest on the accused person and his associates.
Since there was commotion, Zambia authorities joined in and assisted Zimbabwe authorities and took the accused person and his associates to Immigration offices, Zambia.
The Zambian state agents then had an interview with the Wanted person and his associates. They ordered the Zimbabwe security agents not to enter their office.
After some time, the Zambian authorities being led by number 10961 Detective Inspector Mwaba who is the Officer-In-Charge CID Chirundu Zambia without considering the Chirundu One Stop Border Post Concept then threatened Zimbabwe authorities with arrest for executing their mandate on Zambian soil.
The Zambian authorities then refused to hand over the accused persons citing that they wanted to consult with the superiors in Lusaka, Zambia since the accused person had indicated that they were running away from political persecution.
They also refused to have an urgent D-JOC meeting with Zimbabwe authorities.
A team of Zambia Para Military Troop armed with AK 47 Rifles came to the border and escorted the accused person, his associates and the Toyota Hilux vehicle which had not been tendered for clearance by Zambia Police Service, Chirundu.
Matter is being investigated by CID Law and Order Harare under DR 16/08/18.

Speaking to NewsDay during the official opening of a roadside wellness centre in Chirundu, Cross Border Health Solutions director, Amon Tisibhele said that sexually transmitted infections are on the increase.
Said Tisibhele:
