The Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona, has appointed former TelOne Managing Director, Chipo Mtasa, as the Chairperson of the Air Zimbabwe board.
In a statement, Mhona said Mtasa’s appointment is with effect from 06 February 2023 and that she will be deputised by Edmund Murambiwa Makona, who is said to be an aviation expert who has worked in the aviation industry for more than two decades. Said Mhona:

Dr. Mtasa is a top-level Executive with more than two decades of experience in devising and executing strategies and leading team efforts that have produced significant business turnaround in telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, tourism, hospitality management and many other sectors.
She is an accomplished Chartered Accountant who holds a Bachelor of Accountancy (Honours) degree from the University of Zimbabwe and several other postgraduate qualifications and certifications.
I wish Dr. Mtasa and her Board, great success as they lead Air Zimbabwe’s recovery process, through the implementation of the Air Zimbabwe 6-year Strategic Turnaround Plan, with the view to developing a dependable airline, with a robust hub and spoke network; with Harare and Victoria Falls as the main and tourist hubs respectively.

Chipo Mtasa Appointed Chairperson Of The Air Zimbabwe Board

Telecommunications giants, TelOne, are in the process of laying off 423 of its workers, the majority of whom still had Grade 7 and Zimbabwe Junior Certificate (ZJC) as the highest educational qualification in their CVs.
TelOne head of corporate communications, Melody Harry Friday said the company was laying off workers who did not have the skills required to propel the parastatal to greater heights. She said:

TelOne is transforming into a digital entity in line with its new strategic thrust. For this drive to succeed, relevant skills and qualifications emerged as the main driver of the company strategy.
As such, individuals whose skills set were rendered redundant in line with global technological demands and digitalisation market trends are the ones who were affected.
The affected individuals have Grade 7 and ZJC as their highest educational qualification.

NewZimbabwe reports that TelOne urged the now affected individuals as back as 2016 to upgrade their qualifications to a minimum of Ordinary Level but have not done so to date.
The affected employees have, through their unions, raised the red flag against what they find to be an unfair labour decision surrounding their fate.
The Communication Workers Union of Zimbabwe (CWUZ) secretary-general, Mbuso Jubane accused TelOne of foul play alleging the exercise was not being undertaken procedurally.
The union added that they were finding it difficult to accept the reasons behind the laying off since TelOne did not share the information in a transparent manner.

TelOne Laying Off Workers With Grade 7 And ZJC Only

The current foreign currency shortage threatens to negatively impact the country’s internet connectivity.
An internet blackout in the near future is now a distinct possibility as TelOne has failed to settle its financial obligations with companies from Africa, Asia and Europe. In total, TelOne owes $22 million dollars. This was revealed by TelOne’s managing director Chipo Mutasa. She said
<blockquote>TelOne is in receipt of demand letters from the following service providers; TDM of Mozambique — $5,7 million for backhaul services, Telecom Capital Finance — $1,1 million for loan repayment, Duraline — $845 000 for network material, WIOCC — $6,2 million for internet bandwidth.
TelOne continues to be crippled by the escalating arrears on a monthly basis with no meaningful allocations received since July 2018.
We continue to plead for the telecommunications sector to be prioritised for foreign currency allocations and this needs your urgent intervention as the situation is now out of control.
Withdrawal of services will result in a standstill of our operations and a major internet blackout for the country.
As reiterated in our past correspondences, Telecom Capital Finance secured a default judgment against TelOne in Mauritius.
The continued delayed remittances will result in seizure of TelOne shares in WIOCC any moment from now (while) Telecom Capital will be reinstating $1,6 million that was written off when refinancing was negotiated in 2014, if TelOne fails to pay the balance of US$1,1 million by December 20, 2018 (today).</blockquote>
