Cecilia Chitambo, a 35-year-old woman, faced trial at the Chipinge Magistrates’ Court on charges of attempted murder. Chitambo is the second wife of the complainant, Fungai Nyazana. 
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), On January 1, 2024, Cecilia and Fungai had a heated disagreement because she suspected him of having an extramarital affair.
Amid the heated dispute, Cecilia left their marital home and sought refuge at her parent’s house.
Upon her return the next day, another argument erupted, this time over money. Cecilia disappeared briefly and then reappeared with a container filled with petrol.
In a horrifying turn of events, Cecilia doused Fungai with petrol and set him on fire. Desperate to save himself, Fungai rushed to the kitchen and poured a bucket of water over his burning body.
Fungai was rushed to the hospital for treatment, while Cecilia was subsequently arrested.
The court convicted Cecilia and sentenced her to 18 months in prison, with 6 months suspended for five years. She will serve an effective 12-month sentence.
Domestic violence has seen an alarming increase in Zimbabwe. The government has responded by enacting the Zimbabwe Domestic Violence Act (DVA) in 2007 to address this menace.

Second Wife Jailed 12 Months For Setting Husband On Fire

A lightning bolt killed seven head of cattle in Chipinge at midday on Thursday, while a violent storm left a trail of destruction in Chipinge town.
The cattle belonged to Amos Ngazimbi of Lot 1 of Lelisvlei Farm in Clearwater, Chipinge.
Ngazimbi told <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/new-lightning-kills-7-cattle/">The Manica Post</a> that he was left with 25 beasts following the lightning strike. He said:

It is a terrible loss to me. Losing my cattle like this is really painful. The incident occurred around 12-midday when we received unexpected rains.
There were no signs that a storm would hit us, but things changed over a short time.
My herdboy approached me while I was sitting in my house to inform me that a lightning bolt had struck and killed seven of my cattle. I was left with 25 beasts.

During the violent storm, a huge tree collapsed on three vehicles that were parked in Chipinge’s CBD.
Lightning poses a threat to cattle and other livestock on pasture. Farmers can protect their animals from lightning by installing a lightning protection system, building shelters and enclosures at lower elevations, arranging pastures so that they contain rows of trees, not singles and keeping animals inside during lightning storms to minimize their exposure to lightning.

Lightning Bolt Kills 7 Cattle In Chipinge

Full statement by the Deputy Chief Secretary, Presidential Communications in the Office of the President and Cabinet George Charamba in response to an article by local daily newspaper, NewsDay.
<blockquote>
The front-page article, “ZANU PF ROPES IN MOZA MILITIA”, in today’s issue of NEWSDAY, passes for reckless, malicious, offensive and provocative yellow journalism which Zimbabwe is best without.
Timed to raise political temperatures in the country as we prepare for harmonised elections, and to deliberately impugn our long-standing bilateral relations with the neighbouring sister Republic of Mozambique, this piece of brazen, fake news shows what becomes of journalism when a discredited publisher, backed by an unprofessional editorial team prefers political partisanship to media ethics.
Nothing in Section 61 of our hallowed Constitution protects or condones the publishing of such reckless, politically motivated falsehoods.
We thus hope and expect that the Zimbabwe Media Commission, ZMC, takes a clear and bold position against this flagrant abuse of media freedoms whose impact on national security, and on inter-state relations, are dire and injurious respectively.
That the article repeatedly and self-consciously used the adverb “reportedly”, clearly shows deliberate, gratuitous malice, and a conscious decision to proceed to publish falsehoods regardless, as if to wilfully spite the rules of the craft.
So, too, does the tabloid paper’s decision to proceed on the basis of some spurious video clip anonymously placed and circulated on social media.
The intentions of the video are clear, namely to stir hostilities and to harm harmonious relations between communities on either side of our common border with the sister Republic of Mozambique.
Zanu PF, itself the Party of Liberation campaigning on a solid record of countrywide delivery, need not do anything to violate Zimbabwe’s territorial integrity, including enlisting the support of security arms of a foreign country for its election campaign whose momentum and success on the ground is self-evident.
Government thus demands an immediate public apology from AMH, and an unconditional retraction of this offensive article by the newspaper concerned.
Further, Government expects the apology and retraction to have the same prominence as the offending article.
Failure to publicly apologise, and to retract as demanded and on terms outlined above, automatically invites the injured parties, who include Government, to pursue and seek redress through legal options which are available to them.
As Government voices its protest against such reckless, fringe journalism, it continues to urge the mainstream media to show the way by upholding tenets of professional journalism in the country, especially now as we go through the last stretch of our election campaign programme which, to date, has been remarkably free, fair and peaceful.
Nothing must be allowed to wreck our hard-won national peace.

Govt's Response To Mozambique Militia Report | Full Statement

The Government has dismissed as fake news a report by a local daily newspaper alleging the presence in Zimbabwe, of a militia group from Mozambique.
NewsDay, owned by Alpha Media Holdings, on Tuesday, 18 April, published a front-page article titled; “Zanu ropes in Moza militia”.
The report alleged that a Mozambican militia group had been deployed to Chipinge at the invitation of the Government to campaign for ZANU PF ahead of the 23 August 2023 general elections.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Deputy Chief Secretary, Presidential Communications in the Office of the President and Cabinet George Charamba described the report as “reckless”. He said:

A video clip has been circulating on social media platforms showing a FRELIMO official, whose name is not given, telling ZANU PF supporters in Chipinge South’s Ward 28 that businesspeople who fail to support ZANU PF in upcoming elections risk being shot and killed.
The official claimed he was in the company of an army commander adding that if ZANU PF loses to MDC and CCC, that will be the end of Zimbabwe’s relationship with Mozambique.
FRELIMO is the ruling party in Mozambique and has been in power since the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
Charamba demanded an immediate public apology from Alpha Media Holdings and an unconditional retraction of the article.
He warned that the Government will pursue and seek redress through legal options if no apology is forthcoming and the article is not retracted.

Govt Rubbishes Report Alleging Deployment Of Mozambican Militia To Campaign For ZANU PF

The government has announced that it is working with various stakeholders to secure alternative markets for macadamia nuts.
Macadamia nuts are dubbed the green diamond of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chipinge">Chipinge</a> due to their high rewards.
However, prices of the nuts have fallen down to US$0.80 cents from US$3 per kilogramme causing a sour relationship between macadamia nuts producers and buyers, with producers calling for a win-win situation.
China was the major destination for local macadamia nuts but the oversupply of the nuts in that country led to a decline in prices.
Secretary for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Edgars Seenza said Government has intervened to save the macadamia nuts industry from collapsing.
Mr Seenza said the nuts industry is a critical sector for the provincial economy as well as the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/alternative-markets-for-macadamia-nuts/">Manica Post</a> quotes him as saying:

The issue of low prices for macadamia nuts is being addressed by Government.
At the moment, there are five buyers of macadamia nuts from South Africa, China and India in Chipinge District and these buyers told us that the prices of macadamia nuts are depressed on the international markets.
However, the country’s trade promotion board, ZimTrade, has made commendable efforts in establishing new markets for our macadamia nuts which are critical in the GDP equation and they are liaising with buyers from Netherlands, United Kingdom and Germany to come on board as alternative markets for macadamia nuts.
We are waiting for the finalisation of their discussions and farmers will be trained to produce thein Chipinge District quality nuts required by the international markets in order for them to fetch meaningful prices for their nuts.

Macadamia Producers Association of Zimbabwe (MPAZ) secretary, Mr Lazarus Dhliwayo said macadamia nuts farmers are optimistic that they will get new markets in the alternative countries.
 Scores of indigenous farmers in the Eastern Highlands took up macadamia nuts farming at the turn of the millennium.

New Markets On Cards For Macadamia Nuts

The Civil Protection Unit of Zimbabwe has given an update on Tropical Cyclone Freddy which was anticipated in the southern African nation on Friday 24 February 2023. 
In an update seen by Pindula News, the Civil Protection Unit said Cyclone Freddy failed to make it to Zimbabwe. 
The report contradicts a live report by Zoom Earth which suggests that Cyclone Freddy has since entered Zimbabwe. Zoom Earth’s report seen by Pindula News shows that as of Monday 27 February 2023, at around 2000 hours, Freddy was headed back to Mozambique.
We present the Civil Protection Unit’s update on Cyclone Freddy:

1.0. INTRODUCTION
Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall on Wednesday 22 February 2023 in the Mozambique channel. It remained in the channel for two days and made landfall on the Mozambique coast around Maxixe (about 400km from the southeastern border of Zimbabwe) on Friday 24 February 2023. Because of the distance, the cyclone failed to make it to Zimbabwe.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department</a> provided information that Cyclones are weakened by two main factors which are; (a) frictional surfaces due to mountains and other land objects which disturb the smooth flow of winds within the system, (b) lack of moisture especially when outside the ocean waters. Nevertheless, Cyclone Freddy made a delayed landfall in Mozambique thus weakening its magnitude and also reducing its severity hence delayed it from reaching Zimbabwe on 24 February 2-02-3 as initially projected.
 In light of the anticipated cyclone, Civil Protection Organizations, Provinces and Development partners were on high alert and were activated. Provincial and District Command Centers in the districts likely to be affected were manned 24 hours. The Department continues to receive updates from Provinces and districts that were most likely to be affected by Tropical Cyclone Freddy as follows;
2.0. Mashonaland Central Province 
2.1. <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mazowe">Mazowe</a> District 
Eight (8) classroom block had its roof blown off by strong winds at Musarara Primary school in ward 9. In ward 11, five (5) houses had their roofs blown off and furniture damaged. 
2.2. Shamila District 4 heavy wind storm was witnessed on 26 February 2023 in Shamva urban in the afternoon around 1400 hours which uprooted a Mukuyu tree at Cross junction along Chakonda road and this resulted in one death.
3.0. Manicaland Province 
3.1. Chipinge District 
The district received heavy rains and strong winds on 26 February 2023. Roofs of staff houses were blown off at Simudzai Primary school in Chipinge and Checheche Primary school in Chisumbanje 
4.0. Masvingo Province
4.1. Bikita District 
One thatched but was struck by lightning on 2-5 February 2023 in Kutsirai Village Ward.
4.2. Zaka District 
In Marimira village Ward 13, a house was completely destroyed by rainfall on 2-6 February 2023.
4.3. Chiredzi District 
In Ward 19 Hippo Valley Estate, sugar cane plantations were extensively damaged,
5.0. Conclusion 
The country is still in the cyclone season and is also prone to other extreme weather events hence it is imperative that all national and sub-national structures remain vigilant in the same spirit that was prevailing in preparation for Cyclone Freddy. Given the unpredictable nature of Tropical Storm Freddy in the ensuing days after the original forecast regarding its trajectory, the Department in collaboration with MSD and other stakeholders has scheduled for a mission to give feedback to the nation and particularly communities. This will build confidence in future early warning programmes, alerts amongst the citizens.

Zimbabwe Govt Update On Cyclone Freddy

Tropical Cyclone Freddy entered Zimbabwe on Sunday causing some minor damages to infrastructure in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chipinge">Chipinge</a>, Manicaland Province.
The Herald reports that Tropical Cyclone Freddy lost its energy after making landfall in Mozambique and by the time the remnants entered Zimbabwe there was nothing much left.
Chipinge and some other parts of Manicaland and Masvingo provinces experienced some showers and winds yesterday.
The winds blew off roofs from a couple of huts and a teachers’ house at Chichichi Primary School in Chipinge.
Secretary for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mr Edgars Seenza told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/roofs-blown-off-in-chipinge-as-weakened-tropical-storm-freddy-enters-zim/">The Herald</a> last night that the showers and winds were not as serious as forecasted. in the province, but said no major damages were reported. Mr Seenza, who is also chairman of the Manicaland Civil Protection Committee, said:

I am actually on my way from Chipinge; I have been going around the province checking on the situation. Some parts of the province such as Chimanimani, Hot Springs and Chipinge had some meaningful showers.
A few huts and some school buildings were affected by the strong winds but I will get detailed information from the command centre and share with you tomorrow (today).

In its update yesterday, the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department (MSD)</a> said <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/02/26/zimbabwe-weather-report-and-forecast-26-february-2023/">cloudy and windy conditions prevailed</a> in the southern provinces namely Matabeleland South, Masvingo, southern parts of Midlands, and Manicaland provinces.
Today, the eastern and southern provinces — Mashonaland East, Manicaland, Masvingo, Matabeleland South and southern parts of Midlands are expected to be mostly cloudy, rainy, and mild during most parts of the day.
Thunderstorms have a chance to occur in the afternoon while it should be windy in Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, Masvingo and Manicaland provinces.
The windy conditions could blow off rooftops and loose debris as well as break tree branches.

Cyclone Freddy Enters Zimbabwe

A 55-year-old man from Chindikumiri Village under Chief Garahwa’s area of Chisumbanje was sentenced to 15 years in jail for raping a mental patient.
Blessing Banxa was convicted and sentenced to 15 years in prison when he appeared before Chipinge regional magistrate, Noel Mupeiwa, on Tuesday.
However, 3 years were set aside on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
Prosecuting, Themba Dhliwayo said on 6 November 2022, Banxa approached the complainant who was playing alone about 70 metres from their homestead. Said Dhliwayo:

Banxa grabbed the complainant’s hand and dragged her into a toilet which is about 10 meters away from where she was playing. He raped her once and was only released after biting Banxa on the chin.
After the act, Banxa vanished from the scene. The complainant went home crying. 
She met Mr Calvin Mucheri and Mr Allen Khumbula along the way who asked her why she was crying.
She revealed to the two that Banxa had raped her in the toilet.

Mucheri and Khumbula confronted Banxa, but he denied raping the complainant.

Man (55) Gets 15 Years Imprisonment For Raping Mental Patient

A Chipinge man was on Wednesday sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old daughter.
The man (name withheld to protect the identity of the girl) is from Maadza Village under Chief Musikavanhu.
He appeared before Chipinge regional magistrate, Noel Mupeiwa facing rape charges.
The man pleaded not guilty but was convicted due to overwhelming evidence.
The court heard that sometime in May, the girl was seen roaming around Maronga Business Centre by a pastor with Pentecostal Assemblies of Zimbabwe (PAOZ), Pastor Elliot Mangwayana.
Magwayana and his wife took custody of the child after learning that her father had neglected her after he separated from the girl’s mother.
The girl stayed with Pastor Mangwayana’s family until last month when the father visited her at the pastor’s home. Prosecutor, Themba Dhliwayo, told the court:

On November 2, the man approached Pastor Mangwayana’s wife, Mrs Batsirai Mashava-Mangwayana requesting to see his daughter. 
He told Mrs Mangwayana that he wanted to buy fish for her daughter at a business centre in Chibuwe.
The father told Mrs Mangwayana that he would return the child on the same day.
On their way to the shopping centre, they passed through a forest and the father raped his daughter once.
The complainant cried for help, but the father threatened her with death.

After raping his daughter, the father abandoned the journey to the business centre and instead, took the girl to his homestead and raped her again during the night. Sad Dhliwayo:

The man raped the complainant again at his homestead. On November 3, the man decided to return the child to Pastor Mangwayana’s home in Maronga area. On their way, the man raped the girl again.

The matter came to light when Mrs Mangwayana asked the girl why she failed to return the previous day.

Chipinge Man Jailed 20 Years For Raping Daughter (10)

Four men from Chipinge have been sentenced to eight months in prison each for selling leaked ZIMSEC examination papers to prospective candidates across the country.
Ashard Sibiya aged 22 and Brian Kossam (22) had their sentences wholly suspended on the condition of good behaviour, while Tazwa Zibuke (22) and Musuthu Sithole (21)’s sentences were commuted to 108 hours of community service.
The four pleaded guilty to selling and circulating the November ZIMSEC Maths Ordinary level paper 1 and 2, Advanced level Mathematics Paper 2, and Advanced level Accounts paper 2 and 3, <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2022/11/23/eight-months-jail-sentence-for-leaking-zimsec-papers/">ZBC News</a> reported.
It is not clear how they got the papers.
Earlier this month, the same court sentenced three Gaza High School students; Takudzwa Muboera aged 19 and Thabo Sigauke (17) to community service after they pleaded guilty to selling leaked examination papers and fraud.
The trio was charging at least ZWL$20 000 per paper which was paid into their Ecocash accounts. 
Meanwhile, ZIMSEC says candidates who had pre-access to question papers continue to be identified and in line with the ZIMSEC Act, Section 34, will have examination results cancelled. 
Examination papers have been leaking over the years raising questions about the integrity of the certificates and qualifications.

Four Men Sentenced To 8 Months In Prison For Selling Leaked ZIMSEC Exam Papers

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister, Anxious Masuka, said villagers who benefit from government programmes should vote for President Emmerson Mnangagwa in the 2023 general elections. 
Masuka said this while addressing villagers in the Chinyamukwakwa area of Chisumbanje, Chipinge, over the weekend while handing over 250 plots from ethanol producer, Green Fuel to the villagers.
He told the villagers that when they vote in 2023, they “must return the favour” to President Mnangagwa because he was the one who gave them free farming inputs. He said:
<blockquote>
Right now we see the rains are coming and we are busy ensuring that we organise and provide all inputs for you on time.
That is what we call Rural Development 8.0 so that you will be able to get the inputs on time.
The electoral campaign period is still way ahead. I am not a campaign manager, but let me try it here.
When you are given these agricultural inputs, you must think of one person in your mind — and that is the person who has given you the inputs — President [Emmerson Mnangagwa].
When you are given goats, think deeply of the person who has remembered you — you must return the favour and remember him too in 2023.

Masuka also told the villagers that farming inputs come from ZANU PF, even though they were bought using taxpayers’ money. He said:
<blockquote>
I now want to speak on the issue of Members of Parliament (MPs). We had a situation whereby the inputs disappeared before they got to the beneficiaries. So the MPs should be witnesses during distribution to oversee it.
This is because these inputs come from ZANU PF, which is the ruling party that forms the government, and government acts on what ZANU PF says. So, the party must not be excluded.

Masuka said traditional leaders will be given more fertiliser than ordinary villagers because, in the past, they would assist those who were starving. He said:
<blockquote>
You will be given enough fertilisers and other inputs for three plots. Village heads are in the distribution committees because they will know all of you.
We will give village heads more than everyone else — for seven plots, because long back when there was drought, the village heads would assist those who would be starving.
The headmen will also be given inputs for nine plots while the chief will get inputs for eleven plots.
Don’t think that these have been favoured, we have all been given by President ED.

ZRP spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo, confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/poachers-kill-black-rhino/">The Manica Post</a> saying the decomposing carcass of the black rhinoceros was found on 12 October. He said:

Poachers sneaked into Chipinge Safari Camp armed with unknown rifles. They proceeded to one of the water points along the Chidimayi River on the safari where they shot and killed a black rhinoceros.
On October 12, the informant who was on patrol in the company of fellow game rangers discovered the carcass of the black rhinoceros about 500 metres along Chidimayi River.
A trail of blood was seen emanating from the water point along the river to the place where the carcass was discovered.
The carcass was inspected and it was discovered that it was notched on both ears. 
It was also observed that the poachers used an unknown sharp object to remove the horn.
Checks were made with Zimparks records and it was established that the black rhinoceros had a Notch Number 1481, first recorded in 2015.

An accountant with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in Chipinge lost all his household property after his four-roomed cottage was razed by fire on Wednesday morning.
Maxwell Dumba of Kelvin suburb told <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/new-fire-leaves-chipinge-family-homeless/">The Manica Post</a> that the fire started after he had left for work. He said:

I left my home early in the morning to go to work as usual at Chipinge Government Complex. There was no electricity as a result of the ongoing power cuts. My wife was also not around.
While at work at around 8:30 AM, I received a call from my builders working on the main house, telling me that there was smoke coming from my cottage. Power had been restored.
I called the fire brigade which reacted swiftly, but they had a torrid time reaching my house as the shorter route is not accessible due to the poor road network.
They failed to cross a makeshift bridge on that road and had to use a longer route; otherwise, we could have managed to salvage something from the house.

He said he was only left with the clothes he was wearing.

Civil Servant Loses All Property In House Fire

CCC “Change Champion in Chief,” Nelson Chamisa said President Emmerson Mnangagwa usurped power from the late former President Robert Mugabe only to use his new-found powers to destroy the country.
Addressing opposition supporters in Chipinge at Kondo business centre during the weekend, Chamisa said the 2017 military coup was taboo and Mugabe died a bitter man. He said:

Mnangagwa stole power from his elder. Mugabe died a bitter man after power was grabbed from him. Chasing away your elders is taboo.
This is why you see Mnangagwa struggling to rule the country because he angered his elder (Mugabe). Ini ndakasiirwa naSave [Tsvangirai chose me to lead].
I’m giving Mnangagwa nightmares as he hears that Chipinge was filled with people without any money spent or anyone beaten.
It’s just love. I see that you came on your own. No one gave you money. If you look around there is not even a single ZUPCO bus.
If it was Mnangagwa’s rally, you would have all been forced to attend it and shops and vending areas would be closed.
People fought to liberate the country from white bondage and not a single political party had ownership of the country.

Chipinge District Hospital has been operating without an X-Ray machine for almost five months now.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/no-x-ray-machine-at-chipinge-district-hospital/">The Manica Post</a>, the hospital’s X-Ray machine broke down in April and patients seeking X-Ray services are being turned away.
The digital machine reportedly broke down in April when the hospital was attending to Chimanimani Bus Disaster victims which claimed the lives of 43 Zion Church of Christ (ZCC) followers.
Chipinge District Hospital receives at least 20 patients seeking X-Ray services daily but they are being referred to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital in Mutare.
Chipinge District Medical Officer, Dr Brian Makumbe confirmed the dire situation at the hospital. He said:

Our X-Ray machine is not working. The part that broke down is very expensive to replace.
The money we are receipting is not enough to repair or buy the new part.
We are engaging our superiors to have this issue addressed.

Chipinge District Hospital’s catchment area is quite huge, covering Chipinge rural, Birchenough Bridge, Rusitu and neighbouring Mozambique.
A patient, Tenson Semwayo, told The Manica Post that he had to fork out US$40 at a private surgery in Mutare to access X-Ray services after travelling all the way from Manzvire in Chipinge South last week.
He implored authorities to urgently repair the X-Ray machine at Chipinge District Hospital.

The government has called for applications from newly qualified teachers to fill vacancies in 13 districts, in a bid to balance the teacher-learner ratio in schools.
In a joint vacancy announcement dated August 23, 2022, the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education said:

Sugar beans farmers in Chipinge have threatened to withhold their produce until they get acceptable prices from buyers.
The farmers accuse middlemen of ripping them off, taking advantage of the scarcity of buyers and offering them only US$0.70 per kg.
Farmers in Middle Sabi, Chibuwe and Musikavanhu Irrigation Schemes have started selling their sugar beans but are not happy with the prices being offered by middlemen.
One of the leading producers of sugar beans, Saymore Majuta of Musikavanhu Block Five, said the production of sugar beans is now an expensive venture and farmers need a fair price. He said:

As farmers, we agreed that we will not sell our beans for a song. These middlemen are getting more than what the actual farmer is pocketing and we are saying no to that daylight robbery.
We are looking for serious buyers and we hope to strike a deal soon. Growing sugar beans is now an expensive venture.
Imagine a 50kg bag of top dressing fertiliser is going for US$70 and then someone wants to buy a kilogramme of our produce for less than a dollar.

Chairperson of Middle Sabi Farmers Association, Skumbuzo Thondlana warned middlemen against shortchanging farmers and urged buyers to come up with realistic prices.

One person died and three others were injured in Chipinge after they were hit by a speeding motorist who had three passengers aboard his Honda Fit vehicle.
Mahlanganise Chiedzo (47) of Gaza E, Chipinge was recently arrested for running over four pedestrians along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road in Chipinge.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the arrest of Chiedzo. He said:

The driver was speeding with three passengers aboard his Honda Fit vehicle. He lost control of the car near the 243km peg, veered off the road and ran over four pedestrians.
Sylvia Makuyana (34) died upon admission at Birchenough Bridge Hospital, while Chipo Mtisi, Brandon Sithole and two-month-old Kelvin Tembo sustained injuries.

World Vision Zimbabwe has donated computers, laptops, printers and other Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessories to seven schools in Chipinge District.

World Vision Donates ICT Equipment To 7 Chipinge Schools

Cash-strapped Chipinge Town (CTC), which is owed $243 million by ratepayers, has acquired three top-of-the-range vehicles for its executives.
This comes at a time the local authority is struggling to ensure efficient service delivery for residents.
Just over a week ago, CTC took delivery of a Nissan Navara single cab worth US$29 000 which was allocated to the Engineering Department.
Three double-cab vehicles for the executives are expected in the near future.
The vehicles were purchased using the council’s internal funds.
However, Chipinge residents want the council to also prioritise the acquisition of service delivery vehicles.
Amato Rungano of Chipinge Town Residents Association (CTCA) said:

While it is not in dispute that heads of departments need to have vehicles as part of their package, council should also prioritise the acquisition of service delivery vehicles.
We need skip bins, road compactors as well as street lights. As residents, we take great exception to delays in acquiring these important vehicles considering the poor service delivery and the state of our roads.
Improving service delivery will encourage ratepayers to settle their outstanding bills.
This will also see the council improving its revenue collection efficiency as residents will be seeing value for their money.

A stores controller at Grain Marketing Board (GMB) Chipinge Depot appeared in court on Monday on allegations of stealing 34x50kgs bags of Compound D fertiliser last year.
Tinashe Mafashu (49) of Usanga suburb in Chipinge appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Elizabeth Hanzi facing theft charges.
Mafashu pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to yesterday (Wednesday).
Prosecutor Delia Kathaziye told the court that from 17 May 2021, Compound D fertiliser deliveries were made to GMB Chipinge under the 2021 Presidential Farming Inputs Scheme. Said Kathaziye:

The fertilisers were released into Mafashu’s custody as the stores controller.
His duties include receiving and dispatching stocks and making daily, weekly and monthly stock counts.
From the period extending October 8 to October 29, Mafashu stole 34x50kgs of FSG Compound D fertiliser.

Khataziye added that from 11 October, Mafashu started making excuses not to carry out physical counting of the stock on a daily basis with the security guard, Zebediah Moyana as they were supposed to do. She said:

On October 29, Mafashu noticed that the bags of fertiliser were now few and reported that 34 bags were missing.
The manager carried out a stock check and discovered that they received a total of 14 108x50kgs of compound D, they dispatched 13 283 by 50kgs and they had a remaining stock of 791x50kgs bags, instead of 825x50kgs bags, giving a shortfall of 34x50kg bags of Compound D fertiliser.

The total value of the missing fertiliser is $108 000 and nothing was recovered.
Meanwhile, Mafashu argued that he could not steal the property under his custody, saying maybe a mistake was made while loading some of the dispatched fertiliser.
But one of the witnesses, Pauline Jani, said Mafashu has a case to answer since no unlawful entry case was reported at the depot.

GMB Employee In Court Over Missing Presidential Inputs

An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 struck Chipinge and the surrounding areas at around 11:30 PM on Sunday.
Chipinge District meteorological officer Lydia Masengu on Monday confirmed the occurrence of the earth tremor to The Manica Post. 
Masengu said that the epicentre is in Zimbabwe close to the Mozambique border near the Mt Selinda area. She said:

I confirm that a tremor occurred last night. The preliminary location shows that the earthquake occurred at Latitude -20.494 and longitude 32.632 and the magnitude was determined to be 4.4.
It was widely felt in Chipinge and the surrounding area and the local people called our offices to enquire about the tremor.

The epicentre is the point on the earth’s surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.
Masengu said the Zimbabwe-Mozambique eastern border area shows high earthquake activity.
Most of the earthquakes in the area are a result of plate tectonics attributed to the East African Rift System which extends into Mozambique.

Chipinge Hit By 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake

Farmers in drier regions of the country have been urged to plant small grains which are more drought tolerant.
A Chipinge farmer, Charles Sithole Mhlahlayazi of Chinyamukwakwa in Chipinge South (Ward 26), is expecting a bumper harvest from his sorghum crop.
Mhlahlayazi said he grew a new red sorghum seed variety – Rakodzi – on his 10-hectare plot and is expecting between four and five tonnes per hectare.
Speaking during a field day hosted by seed breeders, Klein Karoo (K2) Seed Marketing Company at his farm recently, Mhlahlayazi said:

The idea of growing this type of sorghum came after listening to a radio programme from a local radio station.
From what I heard during the programme, I did not hesitate to grow the red sorghum variety despite some discouragements from fellow farmers.
I went to local shops where I bought a 10kg bag of seeds. I got basic knowledge on how to grow it since no one had ever tried it here.
Despite receiving low rainfall this season, my crop performed very well. I am expecting more than four tonnes per hectare. I am expecting high returns on my investment.

The producer price for a tonne of sorghum is pegged at $70 263 and the red sorghum is in great demand, especially from those in the brewing industry.
Speaking at the same event, K2 regional manager, Petros Nyamande outlined the advantages the new sorghum seed variety has for farmers. He said:

Farmers in areas that received low rainfall should grow this variety to ensure food security. lt is also in high demand from breweries.
The crop cannot be attacked by birds like other small grains and once it germinates, you cannot make losses.

An outbreak of theileriosis, popularly known as January Disease, threatens to wipe off cattle in Chipinge District, with cases having been recorded in Wards 16, 20 and 22.
Chipinge District Livestock Promotion Officer, John Mwandifura confirmed the development, saying a team from the Veterinary Services Department is on the ground to assess the situation.
Chipinge Rural District Council’s Ward 20 Councillor Charles Mugidho told The Manica Post that a number of cattle have already succumbed to the disease but few farmers are reporting cases to the Vet Department. Said Mugidho:

We have received a number of cases where cattle are succumbing to January Disease.
The situation needs urgent intervention as villagers are losing their cattle to the disease every day.
We were told by a local Veterinary Services Department officer that the disease is caused by not dipping our cattle.
We have discovered that only a few farmers are reporting the outbreak of the disease to officials.
Some of them are selling their sick animals to local butcheries for a song.
Others are slaughtering the beasts and selling the meat to fellow villagers, thereby risking so many people’s lives.

January Disease Hits Chipinge District

A Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Councillor in Chipinge has been arrested for allegedly fondling a ZANU PF female member’s breast at a polling station.
Chrispen Rambu, who was elected councillor for Chipinge Town Council’s Ward Eight in the 26 March by-elections, is accused of fondling Jenipher Mpofu’s breast. Mpofu is a member of ZANU PF in Chipinge District.
Rambu (40) is facing indecent assault charges as defined in Section 67(1) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
He pleaded not guilty to the charge when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Alfred Chinembiri early last week.
He was remanded out of custody to 5 April on $10 000 bail.
Prosecutor Isaac Tangwena told the court that the incident took place on 26 March at around 8 PM.
It is alleged that Mpofu was walking along the road which leads to Makocheredze Polling Station where she wanted to cast her vote when she met Rimbu. Said Tangwena:

The complainant met Rambu who was coming from the opposite direction. Rambu blocked her way and accused the complainant of disturbing some of his party members from voting. The complainant denied the allegations.
Ms Mpofu placed the book she was holding in her jacket and Rambu grabbed her by the collar. Rambu tried to get the book from Ms Mpofu, but she resisted.
Rambu fondled the complainant’s breasts during the scuffle. He later grabbed the book and shoved Ms Mpofu to the ground.

Mpofu allegedly reported the matter to a police officer who was manning the polling station and was referred to the charge office for assistance.

Chipinge District Hospital is experiencing a severe water shortage, raising fears of an imminent outbreak of diarrheal diseases at the health institution.
The water crisis at Chipinge District’s referral hospital has been caused by the constant breakdowns of the water reticulation system, worsened by a breakdown of one of the main water pumps.
The hospital and staff residents are supplied by one borehole and this has forced admitted patients’ relatives to bring them water for use.
A hospital staff member who declined to be named in the report told The Manica Post that the hospital’s system needs a complete overhaul to end the perennial water challenges. Said the worker:

The hospital’s water system needs a complete overhaul. We are struggling to get adequate water supplies at the hospital, mainly because of the ageing pipes which need a complete overhaul.
When we engaged the council, they told us that their role is to supply water to the main pipe and the water reticulation at the hospital is done by the Department of Public Works.

Assistant District Development Coordinator, Teddius Beto confirmed the water situation at the hospital and pleaded with stakeholders to help. Said Beto:

Chipinge District Hospital Hit By Water Shortages

A 38-year old man from Chipinge is on the run after he allegedly shot and injured his girlfriend in the early hours of this Monday.
The suspect, Freeman Sithole, shot 30-year old Shingai Magazi from Panganai Village under Chief Mutema, four times in both hands and in the chest.
Magazi was ferried to Birchenough Bridge Hospital where she is currently admitted.
Reports suggest that Sithole and Magazi had a misunderstanding over their relationship status, which resulted in the suspect assaulting the victim before shooting her as she tried to escape.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident saying investigations are underway.

Chipinge Man On The Run After Shooting Lover 4 Times

A 40-year-old member of the End Time Church in Chipinge on Sunday last week stormed out of a church service and killed herself because she was tired of staying with an unemployed and broke husband.
Precious Mushunje’s body was found a few metres from the church’s premises at Chipinge Government Farm after a search by her husband, Edwin Chikwanha (54) and fellow church members.
She left a suicide note revealing that she was living a stressful life because her husband who was unemployed was not helping her with anything.
Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Sergeant Vimbai Mangundu confirmed the incident to The Manica Post. She said:

Mushunje of medium-density area of Chipinge left home proceeding to a church service at End Time Church near her residence.
Around midday, her son realised that her mother had stormed out of the church and tried to locate her without any joy.
He informed his father, Mr Edwin Chikwanha (54) who proceeded to make a report at Chipinge Police Station.
Searches were done with the help of church members before she was found lying dead a few metres away from the church premises.
A suicide note was recovered near her body and it stated that she was not happy because her husband was broke and unemployed.

Woman Storms Out Of Church And Kills Herself

A Chipinge teacher who was transferred from Chimana Secondary School after she was accused of being the ring leader of an alleged satanism cult at the school is suing the School Development Committee (SDC) and village heads for $5 million for defamation.
The teacher, Mercy Mutando approached the Chipinge Civil Court on Tuesday accusing the Chimana SDC led by Tafara Sithole, and village head, Walter Mushavanhu, and the other 12 members of the community of calling her a satanist.
Chipinge magistrate, Elizabeth Hanzi presided over the case, while Tariro Tazvitya, of Bere Brothers Legal Practitioners, represented the defendants.
In her submissions to the court, Mutando claims that she lost her dignity in the community as everyone accused her of initiating pupils at the school into satanism.
She said her name was tarnished all over the world because of the allegations raised by the defendants. Mutando said:

My name was tarnished and was all over social media because of the unfounded allegations raised by the defendants.
They gave false information to the District Schools Inspector, police and Chief Mapungwana that I was responsible for the mysterious happenings that were reported at the school.
I was disturbed by these allegations, and my employer had to transfer me to another school since my life was in danger at the school.

In April this year, bizarre incidents took place at Chimana Secondary School, with some pupils collapsing, while some fell into trances.
As a result, three school inspectors visited the school and recommended its closure.
The village head and the community staged a demonstration at the school resulting in Mutando being transferred from the school.

Teacher Accused Of Satanism Sues SDC For $5 Million

Noria Dhliwayo has refused to see her newly-born baby as it reminds her of her abusive spouse Kennedy Shambare who assaulted her when she was pregnant with the baby.
The Standard reports that Dhliwayo has only seen a photo of the child she delivered at Murewa General Hospital on the phone. 
Dhliwayo, who resides in Zihute village, Murewa, was married to Shambare and they lived in Uzumba until January last year when she was forced to relocate after being severely beaten by Shamabre for condemning his thievery. 
Dhliwayo alleges that Shambare stabbed her with knives and was also beaten with sticks causing her to bleed while pregnant.
She was also subjected to police torture as Murewa criminal investigations detectives came to seize property stolen from her. 
Dhliwayo did community service from March to September at Hurungwe Primary School for a crime committed by her “loved one”. She said:

I suffered a lot in the name of love. Despite beating me several times, I loved him and hoped that he would pay lobola to my family. The situation became worse when he severely beat me while I was pregnant causing me to bleed after threatening to report him to the police. Subsequently, he accused me of trying to abort. That incident forced me to relocate from Uzumba in January. I came with no clothes and property because he had sold them. When he started to visit me frequently I complained that I needed property for the house I rented. This prompted him to rob a house early in March. Two weeks later two police officers came to interrogate me and ordered the confiscation of all the stolen property.  In the process I was beaten, arrested and stayed in prison for more than a week with my three-year-old daughter. I then paid US$100 and did community service at Hurungwe Primary School for six months, from March to September.

All the traumatic experiences Dhliwayo endured and Shambare’s rejection of her pregnancy caused her to hate her new baby who is believed to be at Kadenge Children’s Home in Murewa. 
Dhliwayo, who is also a mother to three other children aged 15 years, 11 years and three years from her previous marriage, said many people do not understand the circumstances that made her abandon her two-month-old baby.
The baby is at Kadenge Children’s Home. Social workers said Dhliwayo can get the baby if she changes her mind and when her life improves. 
Social workers said they realised that Dhliwayo was still in denial, depressed and bitter and didn’t want her child due to pain.
