The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported on various crimes that have occurred across the country including murder, hit-and-run accidents, and drug possession.
In Dotito, Mashonaland Central Province, the police are investigating a murder case where the body of an unidentified 4-year-old girl was found dumped in a pit toilet on 8th December 2023. The police are appealing to anyone with information to come forward and report it at the nearest police station.
In Gutu in Masvingo Province, a man named Collen Mawere (43) has been arrested for the murder of his brother-in-law, Afinos Museka (59). The incident occurred on 8th December 2023 at Chihambakwe Business Centre in Gutu. Mawere allegedly assaulted Museka during a heated argument about childcare, causing Museka to fall and subsequently die.
On 9th December 2023, in Chikombedzi in Masvingo Province, four individuals named Godfree Sibanda (28), Last Lisenga (62), Cosmas Mazvetera (45), and Cephas Siziba (22) were arrested in connection with a murder case. The victim, Peterson Chitsengo (40), was assaulted by the suspects during a drinking session on 7th December 2023 at Mateke Business Centre in Mwenezi. Chitsengo sustained head injuries and was admitted to the hospital, where his condition worsened and he passed away.
In Gwanda, Matabeleland South Province, the police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that occurred on 9th December 2023 along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road. A male adult was killed after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident. The police are urging anyone with information to report it at the nearest police station.
Furthermore, on the same day, detectives from the CID Drugs and Narcotics in Harare arrested a man named Collen Nyakarenga (35) for the unlawful possession of 1,530 kilograms of dagga (marijuana) with a street value of ZW$50,000,000. The detectives pretended to be potential buyers and arranged a meeting with the suspect at Skyline tollgate along Masvingo Highway. Nyakarenga was apprehended after producing a sack of dagga from his vehicle. The detectives also discovered an additional 16 sacks of dagga at the suspect’s residence. The police are reminding the public about the dangers of drugs and urging people to say no to drugs.

Crime Watch: 4-year-old Girl Found Dumped In A Pit Toilet

The woman who died in the company of a NetOne technician when the vehicle they were travelling in was washed off a bridge across the Runde River was buried on Thursday, 5 May, at Lawn Cemetery in Masvingo.
Loice Maradze (40) was in the company of Samson Zvarimwa, the NetOne technician who also died when the vehicle, which belonged to NetOne, drowned after it was washed off Chilonga River Bridge in Chiredzi on Saturday last week.
Maradze was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with Zvarimwa, according to mourners who spoke to The Mirror at her funeral.
Her relatives collected the body from Chiredzi District Hospital after clearing with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Wednesday.
Maradze’s body was taken to her uncle’s place in Majange before it was ferried to Nyaradzo mortuary in Masvingo where it laid in state before burial on Thursday.
Maradze, who was a money changer at Pick n’ Pay in Masvingo, stayed with her three children, two girls and a boy, in Runyararo West suburb.
Reports suggest that Zvarimwa and Maradze left Masvingo on Friday afternoon for Chiredzi.
Zvarima was on a mission to deliver diesel to power generators at NetOne base stations (boosters) in Chilonga and other parts of Chiredzi.
The duo travelled to Chiredzi using the longer route through Mupapa Bridge which is safe from floods.
But on their return, they decided to use the shorter Chilonga Bridge route assuming that the water level at the bridge had subsided.
Their car, a Landrover was swept off the bridge around 9 AM on Saturday and efforts to retrieve the vehicle went on for two days.
On Monday, people from the community used a rope to pull the vehicle out of the water.
Maradze and Zvarimwa’s bodies were found trapped inside the vehicle. Zvarimwa was buried in Zaka on Wednesday.
Maradze’s friend, Abigail Moyo, who spoke at the graveside, failed to finish her speech as she broke down in tears. She said:

When Loice went to Chiredzi she bid me farewell. It never crossed my mind that this was the last time that I was talking to her.
I was shocked by the news of her death which reached me on Monday.

In 2022 alone, 10 people have died at Chilonga Bridge including several Government officials and a member of the Police Sub Aqua Unit.
Earlier this week, Chiredzi District Civil Protection Unit chair and district development coordinator Lovemore Chisema announced the temporary closure of the bridge.
He said that the bridge will only be reopened once it is deemed safe to cross after water levels go down.

Woman Killed In NetOne Vehicle Accident Buried

State-owned telecoms firm NetOne has consoled the Zvarimwa family following the death of Samson Zvarimwa, who was employed as a technician by the mobile network operator.
Zvarimwa died when the NetOne vehicle he was driving was swept off the low-level Chilonga Bridge across the Runde River on Saturday last week. NetOne said in a statement:

NetOne wishes to advise of the untimely death of Samson Zvarimwa our valued technician, in a tragic accident.
We are saddened by the loss of our hardworking member of the NetOne family.
The Board, Management and Staff wish to express their deepest condolences to the Zvarimwa family.

May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.

Reports indicate that Zvarimwa (48) worked at NetOne, Balmain Building in Masvingo and stayed in the Runyararo North West suburb.
When the accident occurred, he was reportedly travelling with an alleged lover identified as Loice Maradze (40), a money changer in Masvingo.
Zvarimwa and Maradze reportedly travelled together from Masvingo to Chiredzi South, a journey of more than 200km.
The tragic incident occurred as they were coming back from Chikombedzi after filling a diesel-powered generator at a mobile base station in the area.
They used a longer route to Chikombedzi through Mupapa which is not prone to floods but decided to use the shorter route assuming that the water level at the bridge had subsided.
The deceased were found trapped inside the car after villagers used a rope to pull the vehicle out of the flooded Runde River.
Zvarimwa is survived by his wife, Diana and 2 children.
Zvarimwa’s sister Jessie Mandebvu said Zvarimwa will be laid to rest in Jichidza, Nhopi area in Zaka on Wednesday, 4 May.
Mandebvu, however, said that she did not know the woman who was in the company of her brother.
Meanwhile, vehicles have been temporarily banned from using the Chilonga Bridge following a spate of drownings as vehicles trying to cross the river have been swept away by floods and submerged in water.
Chiredzi District Civil Protection Unit chair and district development coordinator Lovemore Chisema announced the temporary closure of the bridge on Monday. He said:

We have decided to temporarily close Chilonga Bridge following a spate of drownings caused by vehicles that either fall into the river after drivers lose control while trying to negotiate the low-lying submerged structure or are swept away by floods.
The bridge will only be reopened once it is deemed safe to cross after water levels go down.
Mupapa Bridge is the current viable alternative for those travelling from either Chiredzi to Chikombedzi or vice versa. It’s a longer, but safe route.

NetOne Mourns Technician Who Drowned In Runde River

Full Statement by National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on the drowning incident at Malibangwe Bridge, Chikombedzi
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the death of two people and the missing of three others in Chikombedzi on 22 March 2021 after the vehicle they were travelling in was swept away by water currents.
A DAF AVM truck that had twelve (12) people on board and was travelling from Chiredzi to Chikombedzi got stuck in the mud upon reaching Malibangwe Bridge at 0300 hours on the 22nd of March 2021.
Seven (7) people disembarked intending to assist the driver to push the trapped motor vehicle from the mud.
Whilst outside, the water level began to rise prompting them to seek safety leaving the other five passengers in the vehicle which was subsequently swept away.
Searches made led to the recovery of two bodies whilst three persons are still missing. Investigations and searches are still underway.
Members of the public are urged to avoid crossing flooded rivers, bridges and water streams, especially where visibility is poor.
Drivers should take heed of safety and precautionary measures in order to safeguard lives.
Above all, people should not travel during the COVID19 curfew period which runs from 2200 hours to 0530 hours the next morning.</blockquote>
