A woman from Chief Mutasa in Mutasa District, Manicaland Province, allegedly misrepresented herself as the mother of her deceased grandson and stole his corpse from the mortuary.
The woman, Dropper Makwanza, reportedly “stole” the body of the late Denver Makwanza (14) from Bonda Mission Hospital mortuary and fast-tracked the burial without the knowledge and consent of the deceased’s mother, Lisa Mafunga.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/corpse-stolen-from-mortuary/">The Manica Post</a>, Makwanza allegedly falsified information and impersonated the deceased’s mother to collect a burial order for her grandson without informing and agreeing with the mother.
Chief Mutasa, who presided over the matter last Saturday at his traditional court, was shocked by the incident and referred it to Ruda Police Station for criminal investigations.
He adjourned the matter to June 8, 2024.
Arguing his case before the traditional court, Lisa’s father, Peter Mafunga, claimed his family only discovered that Denver had been buried through the grapevine. He said:
<blockquote>
We only discovered the truth after rumours started circulating, and it devastated us. Moreover, my grieving daughter was waiting for the arrival of the deceased’s father from South Africa so that they could bury their late son together. She did not know that her son had already been buried without her knowledge.
My daughter and the deceased’s father had separated, and I was the one looking after their two children all along. To hear that they buried one of the children I have been taking care of behind my back and without my grieving daughter’s knowledge or consent is shocking.
My family lives just a village away from theirs. This unthinkable act subjected my grieving daughter to emotional and psychological trauma, torture, unimaginable pain and suffering.
Her son’s death was tragic, and the events that followed rubbed salt and hot pepper on a bleeding wound, and such a scar will take ages to heal.
She is emotionally and psychologically paralysed, and I hope justice will be served, with those responsible facing the full wrath of the law for their despicable actions.

Mafunga further claimed that Dropper Makwanza forged documents, and misrepresented herself as the deceased’s mother to collect the corpse from the hospital mortuary for burial.
Lisa, with tears rolling down her cheeks throughout the court session, said that she did not even know where her late son was buried. She said:
<blockquote>
I am in pain, and as I speak, I do not know where they buried my son. I did not bid him farewell. They manipulated the whole process and collocated his corpse and buried it behind my back.
</blockquote>
However, Makwanza disputed all the allegations, arguing that she informed Lisa about Denver’s death and the Mafungas then demanded US$500 to attend the funeral. She said:
<blockquote>
They demanded that we pay them US$500 before they would allow the burial of their grandchild. We were in the process of looking for the money and had raised about US$250, but could not raise the whole amount.
I then contacted the deceased’s father in South Africa, who sent us some money for the burial and instructed us to bury his child, and there was nothing we could do.

She also said they collected the corpse from the hospital with the aid of letters from the police and their village head. Said Makwanza:
<blockquote>
The letters stated that the deceased’s mother and her family were refusing to take part in the funeral proceedings.
Those are the same letters together with my identity card that we used to obtain the burial order. Everything was done above board.
I never forged any documents and never misrepresented myself as the child’s mother.
</blockquote>
Chief Mutasa criticised both families for their conduct and vowed to get to the bottom of the matter.
He said it was culturally unacceptable to connive to bury the deceased without the knowledge and consent of the grieving mother.
The traditional leader also said it was unconscionable for any bereaved family to demand payment as a condition for participating in the funeral proceedings of a relative. He said:
<blockquote>
How could you stoop so low as to steal a corpse and bury it without the grieving mother’s knowledge or consent? And what kind of family would demand payment to sanction the burial of their loved one?
Why did you not just let them bury the child according to the Burial and Cremation Act, and deal with any other outstanding issues afterwards?
Both families were wrong, and we will deal with this matter to its logical conclusion.
First, we need to ascertain how you got the burial order without any identity particulars to prove that you were the mother of the deceased as well as how you collected the corpse from the mortuary.

The Burial and Cremation Act provides regulations related to the burial of deceased persons and stillborn children.
The Act covers provisions for both burial (in earth, interment, or other forms of sepulture) and cremation (burning of human bodies).

Grandmother "Steals" Boy's Corpse From Mortuary

Rescue operations are underway in Penhalonga, Manicaland province, to locate the bodies of two illegal miners who are feared dead after a mine shaft collapsed on Wednesday.
James Mupfumi, Director of the Centre for Research and Development, confirmed the search and revealed that open-cast alluvial gold mining was taking place along the Mutare River in Penhalonga.
Mupfumi stated that a representative from Chief Mutasa had conducted a ritual at the site seeking guidance, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200015529/2-illegal-miners-feared-dead-as-mine-collapses">NewsDay</a> reported. He added:
<blockquote>
We discovered that there is an open cast alluvial gold mining taking place in Mutare River, where Russians were stopped by the government in 2013. There are some well-known politically connected individuals who own the mine.
</blockquote>
Clinton Masanga, Director of the Penhalonga Youth Development Trust, expressed deep sorrow over the mining disaster, emphasizing the need for a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the collapse and hold those responsible accountable. Masanga said:

It is imperative that a thorough investigation is conducted to determine the causes of collapse, identify any negligence or misconduct and hold those accountable to book.
The political and environmental factors surrounding the tragedy demand urgent attention and action. By addressing the shortcomings in regulation, accountability and community engagement, we can strive for a safer and more sustainable future for mining operations.

Manicaland Provincial Mining Director, Elton Shingirai Makumbe, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations were underway.
Over the years, Zimbabwe has witnessed numerous incidents of disused mine collapses, as artisanal miners endure challenging conditions in pursuit of precious metals. Despite the risks, they argue that life’s hardships push them to prioritise potential rewards over safety.

Search For Two Illegal Miners Continues In Collapsed Mine Shaft In Penhalonga

Acting Chief Mutasa (67) is among the first 20 students that have enrolled for the Bachelor of Law Degree at Africa University (AU).
The United Methodist Church-run institution opened its School of Law early this week.
Chief Mutasa, born Lovemore Mutasa, expects to complete the LLB programme when he turns 72. He said:
<blockquote>
I am looking forward to helping my fellow chiefs in getting a better understanding of the law processes in the country.
I really want to urge traditional leaders across the country to take up Law. Age is nothing but a number.
We can do it with determination and willpower. It will help us in our line of work.
My thinking is that at some point, I will be able to open my own law firm.
That law firm will help many children to train and enhance their understanding of the law.

Chief Mutasa has already undertaken training as a presiding officer of community courts with the University of South Africa (UNISA), as well as the University of Zimbabwe Magistrates’ Admission examination.
He is looking to further his education when he completes his Bachelor of Law Degree at AU. He said:

I want to attain a Masters’ Degree in Child Rights. I am very passionate about ending child marriages and this is one sure way of enhancing my understanding of the dynamics around child marriages.

Chief Mutasa has written a book on child marriages entitled “A collection of articles on ending child marriages”.
In January 2018, Chief Murinye, born Ephias Munodawafa, obtained a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Zimbabwe.

Age Is Nothing But A Number, Says Chief Mutasa (67) As He Enrols For Law Degree

A double tragedy struck a family in Chikomba Village in Chief Mutasa’s area on Friday last week after a family member committed suicide at the funeral of another family member.
28-year-old Forget Mutunhu stripped naked and hanged himself at his uncle’s funeral after accusing his relatives of killing the latter.
Forget’s clothes were found near the homestead, while his body was found hanging from a tree in the same village.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Manicaland Province Inspector Norbert Muzondo said Forget, who was among the mourners, had threatened to take his own life if his relatives did not confess that they were behind his uncle’s death.
Insp Muzondo further revealed that Mutunhu was drunk during the funeral wake and verbally attacked his relatives. He said:

Mutunhu was drunk during the funeral wake and shouted at his relatives, accusing them of having a hand in his uncle’s death.
He told mourners that he would take his life if no one confessed to killing his uncle.
Later on the same day, Mrs Doreen Mutunhu saw the deceased’s shirt, trousers and a shoe on the ground and informed other relatives.
Mutunhu’s naked body was then found hanging from a tree branch the following day.

A report was made at Ruda Police Station and his body was conveyed to Hauna District Hospital.

Man (28) Commits Suicide At Uncle's Funeral

Police in Manicaland Province have launched investigations into the murder of two minors in Sambaza Village, Chief Mutasa in Nyanga.
The duo went missing on Tuesday after lessons at Saint Robert Mbaza Primary school and their bodies were found on Wednesday with deep cuts on the necks and their uniforms were blood-stained but all their body parts were intact.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the bodies of the two minors were found in a disused toilet pit yesterday.
They had been missing since Tuesday when they left home for school and villagers began searching for them when they did not return home. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating two cases of murder which occurred at Sambaza Village, Chief Mutasa, Nyanga on 14th April 2021.
On 13th April 2021, the two (2) minors both aged seven (7) years old, left home for school at Mbaza Primary, Nyanga at about 0530 hours and never returned prompting a search in all surrounding areas.
Their bodies were found in a toilet pit at a deserted homestead with tall grass on the 14th of April 2021 after a frantic search by the whole community.
The community discovered uprooted grass and a trail of blood stains which led to the toilet.
Police retrieved the bodies from the pit and observed deep cuts on the necks. All other body parts were intact but with blood stained uniforms.
The bodies were ferried to Nyanga Hospital awaiting post mortem.
Police urges members of the public to cherish the sanctity of human life and report all perpetrators of murder cases. The motive behind this gruesome murder case is not yet known.</blockquote>
Asst Comm Nyathi has appealed to members of the public who might have information to come forward so that swift and comprehensive investigations can be conducted.
