The director of radio services at ZBC, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Robson_Mhandu/">Robson Mhandu</a>, has been suspended following allegations of sexual harassment. Mhandu reportedly demanded sexual favours from a female presenter, Farai Juliet Magada, in exchange for approving her transfer request.
Audio recordings and WhatsApp messages shared as evidence suggest that Mhandu used his position of power, and threatened to send Magada back to Bulawayo if she refused, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zbc-suspends-robson-mhandu-in-bombshell-sexual-harassment-probe/">ZimLive</a> reported. He referred to Magada also known as Farie Jules as his wife and constantly pestered her for sex.
He told her that she needed to “motivate me by work and number two, the obvious… it’s a combination of the two.” Mhandu told Magada in an audio recording of their meeting in his office at Pockets Hill:

Tell me if you don’t want to do it and you’ll go back to Bulawayo.
</blockquote>
When Magada asked Mhandu if her transfer should depend on sex, he told her that “we don’t separate the two.” He threatened:
<blockquote>
I will send you to Bulawayo, I have the power.
In our tradition one mustn’t give their woman space. Shumba (lion) is a military management animal, no letting go, never ever.
</blockquote>
Magada asked Mhandu if giving him sexual favours guaranteed her transfer, and he responded:
<blockquote>
It’s one million percent guaranteed… Remember you moved from Khulumani FM to Classic 263 on my signature MaMoyo. Your talk of guarantees is purely a sign of disrespect from a typical Zimbabwean woman.
</blockquote>
Mhandu repeatedly used terms of endearment like “honey,” “darling” and “sweetheart” while persistently pressuring Magada for sex through WhatsApp. 
During their meeting, Mhandu expressed concerns about Magada’s work performance stating that she was only employed because of his protection and support. Mhandu referred to himself as a lion and insisted that work and personal matters cannot be separated and urged Magada to “do the right things right“.
After Magada firmly rejected Mhandu’s request for sexual favours on WhatsApp, Mhandu angrily responded by abruptly closing the topic. He declared:

Case closed, no further discussion on this issue. It’s now work and work. SIMPLE.
</blockquote>
When he was at ZIMRA and the Zimbabwe Open University, Mhandu also faced similar allegations of misconduct.
During a workshop attended by information minister Jenfan Muswere, sexual harassment in the media industry was discussed, with efforts made to develop a common policy for media workers. The minister said the government views sexual harassment as a violation of human rights that affects everyone.
ZBC CEO Adelaide Chikunguru claimed to be unaware of Mhandu’s suspension, but an insider accused her of lying. The insider told ZimLive:

She’s lying. She has always thought Mhandu wants her job, she’s careful not to be seen as instigating his downfall.
</blockquote>
According to ZBC workers who spoke to ZimLive, Mhandu has a long-standing history of demanding sexual favours from female subordinates. One anonymous employee said:

This is just a tip of the iceberg. The ZBC should actually be conducting a wider inquiry, led by an independent panel. What they will find is a sickening sexual bullying culture that has permeated the organisation for many years.
</blockquote>
Despite the substantial evidence, Mhandu plans to contest the charges during an upcoming internal disciplinary hearing.

ZBC Director Of Radio Services Robson Mhandu Suspended Over Sexual Harassment Allegations

<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) condemns the violation of human rights by Capitalk 100.4 FM. On 25 June 2020, the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) held a sponsored radio programme on Capitalk 100.4 FM on Torture and Ending Impunity.
The programme featured the Forum’s Chairperson and torture survivor Jestina Mukoko, Counseling Services Unit Executive Director Dr Frances Lovemore, NTJWG Thematic Leader for Survivors of Political Violence, as well as the ZimRights National Director Dzikamai Bere.
While the programme was live on air, the studio was invaded by a ma ascertained at the time of compiling this statement.
The invader started verbally abusing the show host, asking him why he had brought people to talk about torture on the radio.
The clearly angry invader did not give the host time to explain as he went on an unrestricted verbal attack. Without any warning, the radio programme was terminated as chaos took over the studio.
We were to learn later that the Capitalk 100.4 FM station manager Nyaradzo Makombe was suspended for allowing the anti-torture show.
The Chairperson of the Zimpapers Group, Pikirai Deketeke in a statement alleged that the programme was not balanced.
ZimRights notes that this is the second documented time that Capitalk 100.4 FM has victimised media practitioners over coverage of human rights issues.
In August 2018, Capitalk 100.4 FM allegedly fired the then station manager Napoleon Nyanhi over a programme which covered the August 2018 shootings.
ZimRights believes the behaviour by Capitalk 100.4 FM is not only an unfair labour practice but is also in violation of the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.
Section 61 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression which includes freedom of the media. Section 67 of the Constitution protects the right to fair labour practices.
The Zimpapers broadcasting division, which also runs Star FM, Diamond FM and Nyaminyami FM has benefitted immensely from sponsored programmes run by civil society actors aimed at raising awareness of human rights.
The group cannot choose what human rights to be respected and what rights they want to violate.
Section 44 of the Constitution says that the State and every person, including juristic persons, and every institution and agency of the government at every level must respect, protect, promote and fulfil the rights and freedoms set out in the Bill of Rights.
The repeated violation of human rights by Capitalk 100.4 FM is what defines impunity. This conduct thrives when there are no consequences.
The High Court of Zimbabwe, in the case of Jestina Mukoko v AG, has found that Jestina Mukoko was tortured by the State.
Capitalk 100.4 FM’s attempt to throw this fact into doubt and unfairly punish media practitioners who give victims of torture a voice is a celebration of the culture of torture and a re-victimisation of the torture victims who seek to tell their stories.
In response to this shameful conduct by Capitalk 100.4 FM (silencing torture victims), ZimRights calls for the reinstatement of Nyaradzo Makombe and the reversal of any sanctions upon employees of Capitalk 100.4 FM who participated in the preparation of the ‘Ending Torture Programme’.
ZimRights calls upon Capitalk 100.4 FM to air the full programme and issue an apology to the torture survivors who voices were quashed by the abrupt end to the programme.
To push for the enforcement of these demands and the respect for the Constitution by Capitalk 100.4 FM, ZimRights will be setting in motion a series of protest actions against Capitalk 100.4 FM.
With immediate effect, ZimRights will stop any business with Capitalk 100.4 FM. All ZimRights media products will bear this message, making it clear that the association will not do business with an institution that is implicated in human rights violations and glorifies torture.
ZimRights will be mobilising all its partners, business associates, the diplomatic community and international organisations to stop doing business with Capitalk 100.4 FM. Media products emphasising this message will be rolled out on social media as well as in the streets.
Condemning human rights violations is everyone’s obligation. The human rights community and the business community must not invest in businesses that violate human rights because that is equal to funding human rights violations.

ZimRights Condemns Capitalk 100.4 FM For Violating Human Rights {Full Text}

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday said that the government will not resort to price controls but threatened businesses that are in the habit of increasing prices willy-nilly.
He also blamed the past 20 years of stagnation for the uncompetitiveness of local industry which he said now requires massive retooling.
Speaking during a wide-ranging interview on Harare-based Capitalk 100FM radio, President Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>. . . what we wish, for the economy to grow, we must not prescribe prices to say ‘you have grown your orange, it shall sell at $2; coming up with a law in Parliament that it shall be $2 or this cup (which was in the Capitalk studio) shall be this much.
No, we don’t do that. The forces of the market must determine the price. There must be competition.
We need more people in our commerce and industry so that there is competition but to do that again, as a result of a partial history of 20 years or so, our machines are old; they are almost obsolete so we need to retool our manufacturing sector so that we become competitive.</blockquote>
On businesses engaged in wanton price increases, President Mnangagwa warned that such a practice will not be tolerated;
<blockquote>That is bad. The time shall come when we make the life of their businesses difficult.</blockquote>

Talent Chademana Has Passed Away

Paul Mavima, the newly appointed Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, has said that the New Curriculum which was implemented by his predecessor, the much disliked Lazarus Dokora, was here to stay. However, Mavima said that the New Curriculum was going to be reviewed after listening to the concerns of parents, teachers and other stakeholders. In an interview on CapitalkFM Radio,  Mavima said that a policy review of the New Curriculum was already away as the Ministry wanted the curriculum to be realistic. Said Mavima:
<blockquote>The New Curriculum gets reviewed, but it stays. We have started reviewing it already and listening to concerns.</blockquote>
The Minister admitted that there were teething problems which need to be addressed. He also said that the tasks which are assigned to students have to be reviewed to ensure that they were realistic and that they made learning fun for the students without overburdening them. The minister also said that his ministry was working on fixing infrastructure at primary and secondary schools to ensure that rural schools, in particular, had adequate infrastructure to meet the minimum requirements.
Addressing a question from a listener on whether it was wise to implement a new curriculum without first capacitating rural schools, some of which do not have classroom blocks or furniture, Mavima said that resources will never be enough. The minister said that if the ministry was to wait for adequate resources, nothing would ever get done.
He also said that the government was working on a proposal to ensure that the schools were going to become economic units which contribute to the national coffers. He said that this would happen if schools are able to do water retention projects which will then be used to facilitate horticulture projects.

Radio and television personality Ruvheneko Parirenyatwa is set to join the Zimpapers owned Capitalk 100.4 FM for a weekly one hour talk show. She made the announcement via a tweet which read:

Ruvheneko set to join Capitalk 100.4 FM

Popular radio and television personality <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Napoleon_Nyanhi">Napoleon Nyanhi</a> who is known as Napster has announced that he will be leaving <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Star_FM">Star FM</a> for Capitalk 100.4 FM where he will be the station manager at the new premium talk radio station which is meant for a Harare audience and the city’s 40km radius.
Nyanhi will officially be off air on 30 November and is currently holding auditions for presenters for the newly established station.
