The Zimbabwe Embassy in South Africa has deployed a team to assess the needs and ascertain circumstances around a bus accident that claimed the lives of 13 Zimbabweans in the Western Cape Province on Saturday evening.
A Simlex Bus Company coach collided with a commercial truck that was going in the opposite direction, 140km before Cape Town along the Hex River Pass.
The bus was travelling from Harare to Cape Town. The stretch of road on which the accident occurred has sharp curves.
Reports suggest that the driver jumped out of the bus during the collision, but unfortunately, he died as well.
Zimbabwe’s Consular General in Cape Town, Esther Mudambo said the 13 people who perished in the accident were yet to be identified. She said (<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/western-cape-bus-tragedy-latest-zimbabwe-embassy-dispatches-team-to-accident-scene/">via The Herald</a>):

Following the tragic accident that occurred on March 9, about 140 km from Cape Town, South Africa along the N1 highway, involving a Zimbabwe-operated bus company, Simlex Tours, officials from the Zimbabwe Consulate visited the accident scene to offer assistance.
Currently, the Consulate is working flat out to assist the victims of the accident. Preliminary reports indicate that 13 people are confirmed dead, while 12 are still hospitalised, nine are at the Worcester Hospital and three others are hospitalised in Cape Town.
Thirty-eight (38) have since been discharged and further details will be availed in due course.

Zimbabwe Embassy Dispatches Team To Western Cape Bus Accident Scene

A Cape Town Metro Police officer was tragically killed in a drive-by shooting while transporting staff home, according to Safety and Security MMC JP Smith.
The incident happened on Friday night while the officer was transporting staff home. Smith said:
<blockquote>
Sadly last night one of our law enforcement officers was the victim of a drive-by shooting. 
I’m afraid that puts us in a situation where we have to understand what the nature of that hit was.
</blockquote>
The city has not yet confirmed if the shooting is connected to the ongoing taxi strike. Instances of public violence have been reported in various areas, including Khayelitsha, Wynberg, Atlantis, Hout Bay, and Milnerton, where buses, trucks, and private vehicles were targeted.
This incident follows the recent death of a 37-year-old off-duty LEAP officer, Toufeeq Williams, who was fatally struck by a stray bullet in Beacon Valley, Mitchells Plain. Williams, who was caught in gang crossfire, was part of the Hanover Park LEAP deployment team.
Gun violence is a prevalent and pressing issue in South Africa, characterised by high rates of firearm-related crimes, homicides, and gang activities. Cape Town Metro Police Officer Killed In Drive-By Shooting

South African authorities said that a woman identified as a Zimbabwean who was shot dead after leaving the court and heading to the taxi rank was not a witness but an accused person who was facing a murder charge.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/woman-shot-outside-cape-town-court-was-zimbabwean-witness-to-murder/">ZimLive</a>, a local publication had reported that the woman, named Christine Yolanda Gumira who was 30 years old and a mother-of-one, was a witness in the trial of a man who had killed her friend.
But on Monday, 05 June, Western Cape Director of Public Prosecutions, Advocate Nicolette Bell, told reporters that Gumira was not a witness but an accused person in a murder case.
Reports indicate that Gumira was charged with murder and was on the verge of turning State witness when she was gunned down. <a href="https://www.thesouthafrican.com/news/breaking-wynberg-christine-gumera-murder-accused-three-in-court-witness-5-june/">The South African</a> quoted Bell as saying:
<blockquote>
At the time of her death, she was not a witness but an accused person who appeared in a murder matter.
The NPA regards the safety of all witnesses, its staff, court personnel, and all persons who appear in a court of paramount importance.
To this end, a voluntary witness protection service is available to witnesses.

Gumira was shot dead on Thursday, 25 May after leaving the court and heading to the taxi rank.
The incident was captured on CCTV, footage that went viral on social media last week.
It is alleged that two of the accused allegedly sat in on Gumira’s case on the day of the shooting.
The suspects allegedly called the third accused and told him what Gumira looked like.
The shooter fired two shots. One fatally injured Gumira and another hit a car passing by.

Zimbabwean Woman Shot Outside Cape Town Court Also Faced A Murder Charge

The City of Cape Town’s Human Settlements Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) Malusi Booi has been suspended with immediate effect.
The suspension followed a police search and seizure operation at the city offices, including Booi’s on Wednesday.
Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis placed Booi on suspension from Mayco with immediate effect from Thursday. <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/capeargus/news/malusi-booi-suspended-as-mayco-member-by-cape-mayor-after-search-and-seizure-raid-7b25ef2a-2b56-4894-9838-3c15721a67b4">IOL</a> cites Hill-Lewis as saying:

The SAPS informed me this morning that the investigation is at an early stage, but is potentially serious and relates to alleged fraud and corruption, and that further details cannot be disclosed at this time.
As a result, I have suspended councillor Booi from his position on the Mayoral committee. In the interim, I have appointed Alderman James Vos as acting Mayco member for Human Settlements.
I have further assured the SAPS of the City’s full support in the ongoing investigation. The City has a zero tolerance approach to fraud and corruption and will not hesitate to act in the interests of good governance.

Booi’s suspension comes after an operation led by the SAPS Commercial Crimes Unit amid ongoing investigations into allegations of fraud worth millions of rands regarding housing tenders.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the raid at the City offices to the Weekend Argus and said it was part of an investigation into fraud and corruption.
Documents, laptops and cell phones were believed to be among the items that were seized.
Infrastructure MEC Tertuis Simmers added he welcomed the investigation into alleged criminal activities involving state officials.
GOOD City of Cape Town councillor Suzette Little said Booi’s office raid was a welcome sign real progress was being made against alleged ongoing fraud and corruption in the City’s housing department.
Little added that mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis needs to come clean on what exactly the Commercial Crimes Unit is investigating and when he became aware that his Mayco member may be implicated.
The city’s mayco member of economic growth, Alderman James Vos has been appointed as the interim human settlements MMC.

Cape Town's Mayoral Committee Member Malusi Booi Suspended

Two United States (US) tourists have vowed not to visit Durban ever again after a daylight robbery in the South African city on Sunday.
Peter Livingston, 71, and George Eighmey, 81, were robbed in broad daylight on Sunday in the Durban CBD while taking in the sights.
The US tourists told <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/elderly-us-tourists-vow-never-to-visit-durban-again-after-being-robbed-in-broad-daylight-54b634ea-58c7-4512-9f76-eea3e33d98af">IOL News</a> that they had arrived in South Africa in December and decided to visit Durban for the weekend.
They had been staying at an Airbnb on the beachfront. Livingston said:

We decided to walk to the Botanical Gardens and hoped to see some of downtown Durban as well.
On our return, as we were walking on Xuma Street, just west of the Workshop Shopping Centre, near an area filled with minivan taxis, we were assaulted in broad daylight, by eight or nine young men.
They forced us to the ground and stole our cellphones and billfolds.
They sat or stood on my friend’s legs and arms to prevent resistance.
They literally tore my pants open struggling for my phone.
There were two police officers across the street. We shouted for help, but no one did anything.
</blockquote>
He said the incident occurred in front of numerous street vendors and a lot of other pedestrians.
Livingston said they were grateful they did not require any medical attention. He added:
<blockquote>
We don’t know how to make a report and the indifference of the police at the scene did not inspire confidence.
Needless to say, this will be our last trip to Durban. We will advise our friends not to come here either. It is too unsafe.

On Friday, Police Minister Bheki Cele painted a grim picture of the country’s crime statistics from October to December, with most crimes on the increase.

US Tourists Vow Never To Visit Durban Again After Daylight Robbery

A retired teacher has been charged with sexually assaulting a child at a British school where he taught would-be prime minister Boris Johnson.
David Price will face trial in South Africa, where he taught after leaving England in the 1980s.
A former pupil in South Africa contacted the police in December after learning of the earlier allegations in Radio 4’s In Dark Corners series.
Mr Price, 76, denies the charges, according to BBC News.
There are 42 allegations against him in total.
Journalist Alex Renton, who was taught by Mr Price, has spoken to six men who allege they were sexually assaulted by the teacher at Ashdown House in East Sussex in the 1970s. 
After returning to his native South Africa, Mr Price continued to teach. 
He was arrested in the country by British police in 2019 and has since been fighting extradition to the UK.
The latest allegations relate to his time at a prestigious all-boys school in Cape Town in the 1980s.
The alleged victim contacted Mr Renton after seeing South African media coverage of the BBC’s In Dark Corners series – which investigated sexual abuse at Britain’s elite boarding schools.
He claims he was first groped by the teacher in 1985 at the age of about 10 while showering at Western Province Preparatory School in Cape Town.
He said he was made to touch the teacher’s genitals and was told he “can’t tell anyone, they’re not going to believe you.”
Mr Price left the school in December 1987. 
A spokeswoman says the school never received any complaints he sexually assaulted children. 
A court statement from the teacher in 2019 admits to “inappropriately” touching boys in the UK, but he denied having done so in South Africa. A later statement in 2021 appears to retract this admission.

Boris Johnson's Former Teacher Faces 42 Charges Of Sexual Assault, In SA And UK

Four South African cities have been ranked among the top 50 most violent cities in the world, thanks to their high murder rates.
 These are Cape Town, Mandela Bay, Durban and Johannesburg.
Experts say bringing down South Africa’s murder rate will require a significant effort from the police and local governments.
The list was assembled by the Mexican Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice which compared cities that have populations larger than 300 000 and available murder statistics.
It then calculated the murder rate by the number of murders per 100 000 people for the period 2021/2022.

As with previous years, the ranking is dominated by South American cities, with South Africa, Jamaica and the US being the only main regional outliers.

The US city of St Louis and Jamaica’s capital, Kingston, are the only non-Mexican cities featured in the top 10.
While Cape Town has fallout out of the top 10, it still holds the top dishonour of having the highest number of murders overall, with 2 911 murders recorded for the period, giving a murder rate of 62.22 people murdered per 100 000.

A 49-year-old South African man arrested in connection with a fire at the country’s Parliament appeared in court this Tuesday accused of housebreaking, theft and arson.
Zandile Mafe appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Zamekile Mbalo who postponed the case to 11 January.
Mafe, who is being represented by Luvuyo Godla, denied and rejected the charges.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson in the Western Cape, Eric Ntabazalila, said State investigators needed to confirm certain information about the suspect, such as his residential address and whether he has assets. Said Ntabazalila:

Investigators have not been able to go to Parliament to assess the damages. By next Tuesday we will have that information.
</blockquote>
Mafe was arrested by officers from the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks).
The fire broke out on Sunday morning and destroyed the National Assembly and parts of the Old Assembly building.
On Monday afternoon strong south-easterly winds in the city resulted in a flare-up of the fire again. It was finally brought under control around midnight.

SA: Man Accused Of Setting Parliament On Fire Denies The Charges

South African-based Zimbabwean Molecular Biologist, Tapiwa Guzha, has made more than 600 inventive ice cream flavours, ranging from baobab to edible clay and bitter leaf.
According to a recent BBC News report, Guzha who has an ice-cream restaurant in Cape Town, South Africa, said that he wants Africans to be proud of their heritage, hence the creation of these various ice-cream flavours.
Guzha says growing up he ate the fruit and vegetables from his grandmother’s abundant garden.
He was surrounded by indigenous produce such as baobab, fennel, monkey orange, and masawu fruit.
But at school, other kids mocked his food, he told the website Beautiful News.com.
According to reports, Guzha was inspired to experiment with dry ice to create the frozen treat, while using indigenous African flavours such as edible clay and tamarind. 
Through TAPI TAPI Desserts, his ice cream bistro in Cape Town, Tapiwa wants Africans to celebrate their heritage.
In a recent interview with Beautiful News.com he said:

It is my hope that by normalising cultural dishes, I can inspire more positive attitudes and esteem in the African people.

A wildfire in Cape Town has destroyed historic sites and buildings at the University of Cape Town. The fire, which started on Sunday morning near a Cecil Rhodes memorial.
More than 120 firefighters are battling the massive blaze, and four helicopters have been deployed to help with the efforts. UTC  students were evacuated by emergency services as the fire destroyed buildings on campus.
By Sunday night, the fire had not been tamed yet.

Cape Town Fire Destroys University Buildings, Historic Sites

A Zimbabwean mother, daughter duo based in Cape Town have been trending for their veggie farm in Mfuleni in Cape Town which they started after they lost their business due to COVID-19, GroundUp.Org reports.
Jane Hozheri, 46 and Ennetty Chikukwa, 21 her daughter are selling some vegetables popular in Zimbabwe like rape, Covo and other varieties of Kale.
Prior to their venture which they said is very profitable right now, the pair used to make and sell duvet covers,  curtains and order online items from China, sell brooms door-to-door in Mfuleni.
Hozheri who is a mother of 2 narrated how she started the business of farming and selling vegetables and said after the first lockdown last year she walked around and stumbled on a farm that was vacant as part of it was being used by someone else.
She then decided to start farming with very little experience leading to the birth of Signature Queen Farm. Narrating her story Hozheri said:
<blockquote>We pay R1,000 monthly for rent. I sold my two sewing machines to buy planks for fencing and seedlings from Pretoria. We then dug a well and used buckets for watering the plants until we saved enough to buy pipes and a sprinkler
We sell a bundle for R10 and bulk orders for resale. Our customers are from Wynberg, Khayelitsha, Eerste River and here in Mfuleni. We are making more money now because there are few people doing these gardens in the township</blockquote>
She said she works in the farm 7 days a week from 8 AM to 5 PM and her time is spent watering the crop, pruning, tilling the soil, adding manure and spraying pesticide. South Africa is home to over 1 million  Zimbabweans who left Zimbabwe for a number of reasons, chief among them, Zimbabwe’s economic crisis.

Cape Town Based Zimbabwean Mother & Daughter Duo Start Veggie Farm After Losing Business Due To COVID-19

A Zimbabwean gay couple has implored the government of Zimbabwe to abolish the Section in the constitution that criminalised same-sex relationships, The Zimbabwean reports.
According to the publication Elton Chibhebhe (23) and Shingirai Musekiwa (32) who are currently based in Cape Town fled Zimbabwe because they could not be free to live and love freely in their motherland.
The couple has turned to activism to implore the Zimbabwean government to repeal section 73 of the constitution that criminalises same-sex relationships. Using their activism vehicle branded Zimbabwe LGBTQ+ Crusader the gay couple said:
<blockquote>We are demanding that the section of the Zimbabwean Constitution that criminalise gay people be abolished. It doesn’t allow us to be who we are and to love one another.</blockquote>
The Zimbabwean gay couple also told the publication their stories, Musekiwa said he was disowned by his uncle a pastor who raised him since his parents died while he was still young when he came out:
<blockquote>Instead of talking to me openly at home my uncle would say horrible things and attack me during his sermons. Fearing that the [Pentecostal] church may attack or report me to the police, I ran away</blockquote>
While Chibhebhe’s father is yet to accept his lifestyle even though his mother has accepted him for who he is:
<blockquote>Growing up, I used to think I am the only gay in Zimbabwe. Some of the gay people have confessed that they [only have] wives and children because the environment forced them.</blockquote>
The Zimbabwean gay couple which works as bartenders in Cape Town, has revealed that had to take in some people in their apartment who lost their jobs during the COVID-19 pandemic and they are currently housing 5 people at their apartment right now.
The issue of gays and lesbians is still a hot topic even on social media as many Zimbabweans are still to accept and or tolerate same-sex relationships.

Zimbabwean Gay Couple Demands Gay Section In The Constitution Be Abolished

Capetown was yesterday and today hit by 2 earth tremors, one that was reported yesterday that had a 2.5 magnitude that rattled parts of Cape Town just after 5 pm yesterday and it was suspected to have originated 1,600 kilometres south-east of the country, eNCA reports.
A resident who wrote about the tremor on Discover Volcano’s website said:
<blockquote>Deep bass rumbling and air felt as if it was vibrating through my chest. We did not experience objects moving though. Fascinating that the sense of something being wrong was not altogether incorrect. At first we wondered if it could be thunder, then an explosion far away, then perhaps a Harley Davidson driving past. Never would have imagined an earth tremor</blockquote>
This morning, the same publication said earth tremors were reported in parts of Capetown and the Western Cape.
According to the Publication:
<blockquote>The South African Seismograph Network recorded the first tremor at around 8.40 pm. It says this had no link to an offshore event after 7pm, 1,600 kilometers south-east of the country.</blockquote>
<blockquote>Some residents posted on Twitter they felt a faint rumbling that lasted about five seconds. The network says no tsunami warning has been issued and there’s no need for panic.</blockquote>
No reports of injuries, fatalities or damage to property have been reported, so far. Cape Town Hit By 2 Earth Tremors

The Zimbabwean consulate in Cape Town, South Africa will reopen for more services on 7 September after having suspended other operations at the beginning of the lockdown in that country.
In a public notice on Friday, the Cape Town consulate said it will gradually restore services in compliance with the host government and the WHO’s health protocols. The notice read:
<blockquote>We wish to advise the public that consular services will be gradually restored with effect from Monday, September 7.
The consulate is taking all possible measures to reduce the risk of transmission of the Covid-19 to our valued clients and our staff.
In taking these steps we are guided and are compliant to the advice given by the South African Government and World Health Organisation.</blockquote>
The consulate will open between 9:30 am and 1 pm and all those seeking services will have to make prior bookings on online platforms.
Some of the services offered by the consulate include:

Controversial Harare-based pastor, Walter Magaya, who is the founder and leader of Prophetic and Healing Deliverance Ministries (PHD), says the COVID-19 pandemic has affected his ability to deliver houses for his “partners”, as per agreement.
This comes after hundreds of his Zimbabwean followers resident in Cape Town, South Africa, besieged his offices demanding refunds for a botched stands deal.
Magaya, through Planet Africa, the investment arm under his church, invited his followers to pay varying deposits into a housing scheme.
The deposits ranged from US$1 000 to US$4 000, depending on the size of the stands, with the partners obliged to pay monthly subscriptions towards the scheme.
The scheme was meant to provide the first batch of stands early this year but nothing has been delivered.
Magaya’s spokesperson, Admire Mhango, said they were aware of the situation and will deliver as per promise once the COVID-19 pandemic eases. He said:
<blockquote>The lockdowns, not only in Zimbabwe but across the world, have affected all spheres of life. Once business returns to normal, we will continue with our housing project as we had planned.</blockquote>
Magaya has made headlines in the past with several female congregants claiming that he s_xually abused them.
However, most of them retracted their confessions a few days after making them, with critics suspecting that Magaya bought the women’s silence.

A Christmas collection has started for Zimbabweans who lost their goods after a bus they were travelling in caught fire on South Africa’s N1 earlier this month.
In a message to Fourways residents, two of the organisers of the collection, Greg and Liesl Milne said:
<blockquote>There were 46 passengers who were travelling back home to Zimbabwe to visit their families.
Many of these passengers only go home once a year, and some only every few years, after working and saving up to provide much-needed clothes, food, toys, money and school stationery to their families in Zimbabwe.</blockquote>
The bus was travelling from Cape Town when a tyre burst sparked the fire on December 11 on the N1 near the William Nicol off-ramp in Johannesburg.
No one was injured in the incident but the passengers, mostly women and children, lost all their possessions.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) last Thursday wounded and arrested suspected hijackers in Harare, Kayelitsha in Cape Town.
A shootout ensued between the two alleged hijackers and police, with the duo wounded and arrested.
Western Cape police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said:
<blockquote>Our endeavours to clamp down on hijackings paid off when vigilant members of the K9 unit spotted a hijacked VW Polo at Foni Street, Harare and arrested two suspects aged 30 and 36 for possession of two prohibited firearms and ammunition and possession of a hijacked vehicle.</blockquote>
van Wyk said that incident happened on Thursday night around 8:45 pm when police officers spotted the hijacked vehicle.
He added that the two suspects will appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court as soon as they were discharged from hospital. Said Van Wyk:
<blockquote>With the recent spate of shootings and murders on police in the Western Cape, particularly on the Cape flats, police management expressed their relief with this success and applauded the SAPS members for their bravery.</blockquote>

A Zimbabwean woman escaped a life of perpetual sexual exploitation after she allegedly refused submission to two men who had trafficked her from Johannesburg to Cape Town, two South African cities.
Sowetan Live reports that the woman’s captors, Lebogang Molapo‚ 33‚ and Ndubuisi Andy Okafor‚ 34‚ were nabbed by the Hawks’ anti-human trafficking team and the City of Cape Town’s law enforcement vice squad.
The Hawks, who are South Africa’s famed crime-busting police unit, arrested the duo after a raid on a house in Milnerton last week.
In a press statement on Wednesday, Hawks spokesperson Cpt Philani Nkwalase said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwean-born woman‚ who left her country of birth to find work‚ was enticed to travel by bus with her recruiter as she could not immediately find a job in Johannesburg.</blockquote>
When the woman arrived in Cape Town, the duo took her to a house in Farnworth Street, Rugby, where she was locked up during the day and forced into prostitution and drugs at night.
The Hawks, however, did not reveal the woman’s identity.

Hawks Rescue Zim Woman From Sexual Slavery In Cape Town

A Zimbabwean man who went missing after falling off rocks into the surf near Gordon’s Bay, east of Cape Town has not yet been found.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Sunday that it activated duty crew soon after 6 pm on Sunday afternoon.
Various agencies were activated to search for the man after eyewitness reported a man falling off rocks into the surf near to Dappat Se Gat, between Gordon’s Bay and Kleinmondman.
South African authorities confirmed that a 25-year-old man from Zimbabwe, living in Cape Town, was missing in the surf.
The authorities further said that despite an extensive air, sea, and shoreline search no sign of the man has been found and a police dive unit would continue an ongoing search operation.

Zim Man Goes Missing After Falling Off Cliff Into Surf Near Cape Town

Zimbabweans based in South Africa on Monday took to the streets demanding that vice president Constantino Chiwenga who is believed to be receiving treatment in the country be deported.
Reports indicate that Chiwenga is admitted at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town. Hordes of Zimbabweans picketed at the hospital demanding that he should be deported.
The spokesperson for Zimbabweans based in the diaspora, Pearl Matibe said:
<blockquote>Citizens who are concerned over the state of affairs in Zimbabwe just came together without being organised; this was an instinctive demonstration which is just a call on leaders to develop their own health institutions instead of looting taxpayers’ money to access healthcare in other countries.</blockquote>
The government of Zimbabwe has remained mum over the reports that Chiwenga was airlifted to South Africa. Minister for Information and Publicity Monica Mutsvangwa had this to say:
<blockquote>I am not aware of that, let me find out and I will come back to you. I am not aware that the VP is in South Africa, I will first need to ask and come back to you.</blockquote>
On Monday, the South African government denied reports that Chiwenga is admitted to the hospital in Cape Town. South Africa’s Department of Health in Western Cape said in a statement:
<blockquote>The Department of Health is aware that a group of Zimbabwean citizens have gathered at Groote Schuur Hospital to protest against the alleged treatment of Zimbabwean Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga at our health facility.
In honour of our commitment to patient confidentiality, we cannot discuss patient details, however, we can confirm that he was not or currently is an inpatient at the hospital.
While we understand the concern of the Zimbabwean community, we need to balance this with the rights of other patients to receive care.</blockquote>
