Simba Bhora head coach Tonderayi Ndiraya has said the club has not yet made a decision on whether to participate in the upcoming CAF Champions League, despite securing a spot by winning the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League (PSL) title.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/simba-bhora-in-caf-champions-league-limbo/">State media</a>, Ndiraya said that if the club chooses to enter the prestigious continental competition, it will need to sign high-quality players capable of competing at the highest level. Said Ndiraya:

We need to sit down as management and see if we want to play in Africa or not, but that is more of an administrative decision.
From a technical team point of view, we want to compete at this level, and that is a different challenge altogether.
While we will retain the bulk of our players, we also plan to enhance our squad to become more competitive than we were this season.
We will be facing champions from other countries, and that will not be easy. I have some experience of African football with Ngezi Platinum, Dynamos, and the national team.
I believe that this international experience will help us if we get the nod from the club leadership. We don’t want to go there just to make numbers.

In just their second season in the topflight, Simba Bhora clinched the PSL title with two games to spare, earning the right to represent Zimbabwe in the prestigious CAF Champions League.
The title win marked a historic achievement as Simba Bhora became only the fourth team, after St Paul’s Musami, Ngezi Platinum Stars, and FC Platinum, to win the championship outside of Harare and Bulawayo.
Simba Bhora also made history as the first team from Mashonaland Central Province to claim the PSL title.
St Paul’s Musami was from Mashonaland East, Ngezi Platinum is based in Mashonaland West, and FC Platinum is based in Midlands Province.
Simba Bhora will next face FC Platinum at Wadzanai Stadium before travelling to Nyamhunga Stadium to take on ZPC Kariba on the final matchday of the season.
Simba Bhora remains undefeated at home, and a win or draw against FC Platinum on Saturday will ensure an unbeaten home record for the league campaign.
At the start of the season, Simba Bhora made headlines by signing 11 new players, a move that has paid off in their remarkable title-winning run.

Reigning Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions, Ngezi Platinum Stars, faced a heartbreaking exit from the CAF Champions League after a tense penalty shootout against Congolese champions AS Maniema Union.
The second leg of the preliminary round clash, held at Stade des Martyrs in Kinshasa, DRC, ended in a 4-3 defeat on penalties for Ngezi Platinum Stars on Sunday, 25 August.
Both legs of the fixture ended in goalless draws, leading to the dreaded penalty shootout to decide the winner.
Polite Moyo and Gareth Madhake were the unfortunate fall guys for Ngezi, missing the crucial fourth and fifth kicks.
Moyo’s shot went wide, while Madhake’s attempt hit the underside of the bar and bounced back into play.
Despite the misses, Captain Kudzai Chigwida, Farai Madhanaga, and Tinotenda Musariranwa successfully converted their penalties.
However, it wasn’t enough to secure victory as Agee Basiala, Ordy Simete, Paty Ilunga, and Rodrique Kitwa scored for the hosts, sealing Ngezi’s fate.

Ngezi Platinum Stars Eliminated From CAF Champions League

Teams participating in the preliminary stages of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League and TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup will each receive US$50,000.
Previously, clubs had to reach the group stages to be eligible for any share of the overall prize money.
Zimbabwe is represented by Ngezi Platinum Stars in the CAF Champions League and Dynamos in the Confederation Cup.
The first preliminary round commenced this past weekend, with first-leg matches held on Saturday and Sunday, followed by return legs scheduled for the coming weekend. The second preliminary round will take place in September.
In recent years, the CAF executive has notably increased its investment in African club football.
The winners of the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League now receive US$4 million, up from US$2.5 million in 2022.
Similarly, the champions of the TotalEnergies CAF Confederation Cup now take home over US$2 million, compared to US$1.2 million the previous year.
In 2023, clubs benefitted from a substantial financial boost from the African Football League, which offered a total prize money of US$8 million.

Dynamos, Ngezi Platinum Stars Get US$50 000 Cash Boost From CAF

Dynamos will face Zambia’s ZESCO United in the 2024/25 first Preliminary Round of the CAF Confederation Cup, scheduled for August.
If they defeat the Zambian side, the 2023 Chibuku Cup winners will then proceed to the second Preliminary Round in September, where they’ll meet either Foresters FC from Seychelles or Orapa United from Botswana.
Speaking to <a href="https://bmetro.co.zw/zesco-will-fallmangombe/">Zimpapers Sport</a> on Thursday, Dynamos’ head coach, Genesis “Kaka” Mangombe, expressed confidence that with proper preparation, they can overcome ZESCO in the upcoming games. He said:

We have been drawn against ZESCO, they are a good side. This means we have to be very prepared and address our grey areas since they are not pushovers.
It’s game on and we have to be prepared and be ready to battle.
If we tick all the right boxes, ZESCO is not going to be a problem for us they are going to fall.
We need to beef up our squad, and we need strikers with even some coming from abroad.
But we have a short space of time as they need to gel in the system since the days are near.

The Glamour Boys faced a setback the last time they were slated to participate in continental club football. They withdrew from the CAF Champions League in 2015, citing financial challenges.
Meanwhile, the 2023 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions, Ngezi Platinum Stars, have been paired with AS Maniema from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the CAF Champions League.
In the first leg, Ngezi will play as the home team, and then they’ll travel to Central Africa for the return leg.
The winner of this matchup will go on to face Petro de Luanda from Angola, who received a bye in the preliminary round.
Both draws were determined based on the teams’ geographical proximity.

Dynamos will play ZESCO United in the CAF Confederation Cup. If they win, they will face Foresters FC or Orapa United. Coach Mangombe believes they can win with proper preparation. Ngezi Platinum Stars will play AS Maniema in the CAF Champions League. The winner will play Petro de Luanda. Dynamos withdrew in 2015 due to financial problems. Matches will be played in August and September. Teams were drawn based on location. Both teams are hopeful for success but need to work hard to win.

Dynamos, Ngezi Discover Opponents In CAF Inter-club Tournaments

FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza said that his team is not ready to take part in the CAF Champions League and should use the current FIFA ban to build a team that can compete at that level.
Pure Platinum Play, who won the Premier Soccer League title in the past four seasons, is still far behind other regular CAF Champions League perennial contenders, according to Mapeza. He said:

It’s sad for our football but l have to be honest, as much as we want to compete in the CAF Champions League, we are still lagging behind.
If Zimbabwe was not suspended by FIFA we were going to play but deep down in my heart l know we are not ready for that stage. I have seen top teams in Africa and we are not at that level.
If you look at Morocco and where they are in terms of football, they are too far away.
What their national team did at the World Cup shows a clear picture of the work they are doing. We are still far behind.

Mapeza said his current squad is still young and needs time to grow and be in a position to take on continental powerhouses. He said:

Of course, we want to go to the African Safari but does it make sense for us to go out there and get hammered five or six goals, what will people say? We are not yet ready.
We have to start from somewhere and go step by step up the ladder. In football, it’s like a graph you start from stage zero going up.
We don’t want to go there when l still feel we are not there yet. We can talk of getting experience but do you think you can get experience when you get hammered 10, psychologically you all get affected.
The squad we had in 2018 l feel if they were still here we could have gone far but these guys we have now are still young.
There will be time l feel now we have a squad that can go there and gives us what we want.

FC Platinum Not Ready For CAF Champions League - Mapeza

South African club Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies were crowned inaugural CAF Women’s Champions League winners after their 2-0 win over Hasaacas Ladies of Ghana at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo on Friday night.
Sundowns Ladies have matched the feat that was achieved by their male counterparts who won the CAF Champions League in 2016 under former coach Pitso Mosimane.
The South Africans secured this victory through a goal in each half by attackers Chuene Morifi and Andisiwe Mgcoyi, who was named the woman of the match, as they became the first team to lift this trophy.
Sundowns Ladies opened the scoring after 32 minutes through a close-range effort of Morifi after she connected with a well-taken cross from Mgcoyi.
The Brazilians Ladies secured this match after 64 minutes when Mgcoyi, who supplied for the opening goal, turned finisher after she was released by a defence-splitting pass from Nonhlanhla Mthandi.
However, Sundowns Ladies finished the match with 10 women when substitute Regina Mogolola saw red for a dangerous tackle on Aidoo.
The referee brandished the red card following a lengthy VAR check.

FC Platinum crashed out of this season’s CAF Champions League after losing 4-5 on penalties to Angolan side Grupo Desportivo Sagrada Esperança, also known as Sagrada Esperança on Saturday afternoon.
The match, which was played at the National Sports Stadium in Harare, had to be settled by a penalty shootout after it ended 0-0 after 90 minutes.
Pure Platinum Play and Sagrada also played out a goalless draw in Angola in the first leg of the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.
Sagrada converted all their five penalties, with their goalkeeper saving Rodwell Chinyengetere’s effort.
Coach Norman Mapeza conceded defeat and he believes the experience is good for his squad ahead of the returning domestic league and the Chibuku Super Cup. Said Mapeza:

It’s very unfortunate, the boys tried their best to get goals, but it was not our day. We are picking positives from this game and we are not losing hope yet.
It was a balanced match, but you all know that penalties are tricky and once you reach there, it’s anyone’s game to win.
It’s tough for Chinyengetere, but he is a senior player and I know he will deal with that and not be disheartened and also improve.

This is the second time that the Platinum miners have been bundled out of this tournament at the preliminary round stage by an Angolan outfit.

FC Platinum Crash Out Of CAF Champions League

FC Platinum captain Petros Mhari says the boys will fight till the end, and when they fight together anything can be achieved.
Pure Platinum Play face off against Angolan champions GD Sagrada Esperanca in the CAF Champions League Preliminary second leg tie at the giant National Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The match is live on YAFM and ZBCtv.
In the reverse fixture in Angola a week ago the two teams played out a goalless draw and FC Platinum shot-stopper Mhari believes they need to maintain the solidity exhibited in Angola. said Mhari:

The lesson we have learnt in this competition is that we have to be disciplined all-round, avoid conceding goals… and most importantly when it comes to chances created, we should bury them, it is not over until the last whistle. Everyone is going all out on Saturday.

FC Platinum need not concede and if they concede Pure Platinum need to outscore the visitors to progress to the first round of the competition. Added Mhari:

It will be a difficult game but every one of us is prepared to fight and that is the most important thing.

CAF Releases 2021/22 Champions League Preliminary Round Fixtures

FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza says it is not easy for the club to set targets for the upcoming CAF Champions League season after getting the nod to resume training.
The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) gave Pure Platinum Play the green light to resume training under strict conditions. Said Mapeza:

Some of the questions are difficult to answer you know our challenges at the moment.
If you go through that letter from ZIFA, the requirements are a little bit hard on us because they’re asking us to train under this bio bubble and we still have to sit down and look at the way forward.
So for now we are just going to regroup, do our COVID-19 test and we will wait to hear from the club if we can start training under this, then we will see from there.
And as for targets, it’s not easy from where we are coming from.

FC Platinum will once again represent Zimbabwe in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Champions League for the 2021/22 season, the club has confirmed.
Last year there was no Premier Soccer League winner as football was suspended due to COVID-19 but the Zvishavane-based club had won the three previous league titles.
On Thursday, FC Platinum made it official that they will take part in the upcoming continental competition. The club said:
<blockquote>FC Platinum confirmed participants of the 2021/22 Total CAF Champions League. In unusual times where events cannot confirm critical decisions, logic often bridges the gap.
The Pure Platinum quest for continental dominance continues with the sole goal of lifting the national flag and continuing on with the legacies set by fellow countrymen on the Continental football prime showcase of the Caf Champions League.</blockquote>
To date, no Zimbabwean club has won the CAF Champions League.
In 1998, Dynamos reached the final which they lost 4-2 over two legs against ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast.
Ten years later, in 2008, DeMbare also reached the semifinals of the competition.

FC Platinum Confirm Participation In 2021/22 CAF Champions League

Zimbabwean international, Khama Billiat who plies his trade for South African premiership giants, Kaizer Chiefs, says Amakhosi have been trophyless for too long.
The Warriors star said the players have to work extra hard to end the club’s trophy drought and make the chairman Kaizer Motaung proud.
He speaks as the Glamour Boys have not lifted a trophy since 2015. Despite leading for most of the 2019/20 league campaign, they were beaten to it in dramatic fashion on the last day by Mamelodi Sundowns, much to the frustration of their ever-demanding faithful.
Speaking to SuperSport TV after their 1-0 CAF Champions League victory over Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto, Billiat said:
<blockquote>I personally believe that we have to go all the way, we need to be the generation that does what the best generations of this club have achieved in the past. “This club has a very good history and we don’t want to be the ones that are not pulling our weight. Amakhosi are now advancing to the Champions League group stages with a 1-0 aggregate over Angolan side Primeiro de Agosto.

Khama Billiat: Kaizer Chiefs Have Been Trophyless For Too Long

FC Platinum forward Silas Songani insists there is too much work to do this Wednesday when Pure Platinum Play take on Simba Soccer Stars at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.
Speaking after the team’s first training session in Dar Salaam, Tanzania, Songani who missed the first leg in Harare due to injury, said:
<blockquote>We had a great result against Simba Stars but one swallow doesn’t make a summer.
We still have so much in front of us but the players’ honesty and integrity, hard work and willingness to progress, those are the ingredients spurring us on.

Songani commended the club leadership for allowing the team to travel early to enable the players to acclimatise to the weather conditions in the Tanzanian capital.
At the team’s first training session the temperatures were around 31 degrees and the humidity was 66 per cent.

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions FC Platinum have announced a 23-man strong squad for the CAF Champions League return leg in Tanzania against Simba SC.

Simba SC coach Sven Vandenbroeck said that his club did not have to lose 1-0 to FC Platinum in the first leg of their 2020/21 CAF Champions League first-round tie which took place in Harare on Wednesday.
A first-half goal from FC Platinum midfielder, Perfect Chikwende, left the Tanzanian side needing a 2-0 victory in the second leg, to be held in Dar es Salaam on 6 January.
Failure to do so will see Simba SC drop to the 2020/21 CAF Confederation Cup playoffs.
Vandenbroeck believes that his charges dominated the Zimbabweans in parts of the match and should have scored had they not missed the killer touch in front of goal. He said;

Reigning Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions FC Platinum secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Simba SC of Tanzania in the first leg of the CAF Champions League group stage qualifier played at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Wednesday.
The only goal that separated the two side was netted by midfielder Perfect Chikwende in the second half.
Chikwende could have given his side the second goal late in the second half, but after breaching the Simba defence, he was thwarted by goalkeeper Claytous Chama in a one-on-one situation.

FC Platinum captain Petros Mhari says they expect a tough match against Tanzanian giants Simba S.C. in today’s CAF Champions League first-round tie to be played at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
Mhari conceded that the Tanzanians could have an advantage since they have been playing football for the greater part of the year while Zimbabwean football was under the coronavirus-induced lockdown for over six months. Said Mhari:

Tanzanian club Simba believe they have the advantage to beat their hosts, FC Platnum in their CAF Champions League match on Wednesday because of their match fitness.
The club’s chief executive officer, Barbara Gonzalez on Monday said they have an upper hand over Pure Platinum Play as the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League champions have not been seriously active for about a year because of the coronavirus. She said:
<blockquote>Simba have played a number of matches including those of CAF Champions league in the preliminaries plus several others in the Mainland Premier League. This is an advantage for us.
They are not residing in Harare, their home city’s weather is as hot as Dar es Salaam.

Gonzalez added that the Harare weather does not bother Simba players since it is similar to that of Mbeya and Arusha where Simba played a number of Premier League matches.

Zimbabwe Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions FC Platinum beat Costa do Sol of Mozambique 2-0 in a CAF Champions League preliminary round second leg match at the National Sports Stadium on Saturday.
William Stima and Perfect Chikwende were on target for FC Platinum, with both goals coming late in the second half against a tiring Costa do Sol.
Pure Platinum Play went into the match carrying a 2-1 lead they achieved in Maputo last Saturday and the victory in Harare gave them a 4-1 aggregate win over the Mozambicans.
The Zvishavane-based club will play Simba of Tanzania in the First Round to decide which team qualifies for the mini-league stage.
The first leg will be played on 22 December and the return match on 5 January 2021.
If they beat Simba, FC Platinum will make a fourth consecutive appearance in the lucrative CAF Champions League group stage.

FC Platinum coach Hendriek Pieter De Jongh has called on all Zimbabwean to rally behind his team to ensure its success in the CAF Champions League when the tournament starts in November this year.
De Jongh said, for now, the team’s focus was to qualify for the group stages of the competition and hopefully get to the knockout stages. He said:
<blockquote>We need support from everyone at the CAF Champions League. That is the only way to success and that will bring a great name to Zimbabwean football. Our main priority, for now, is to qualify for the last 16 then we will take it from there.</blockquote>
The Dutchman said the club is waiting for the government to ease lockdown restrictions so that players can resume group training as the new campaign approaches. He said:

De Jongh also expressed his desire for Pure Platinum Play to join Highlanders and Dynamos in being the only clubs to have won the league title for four consecutive seasons.
FC Platinum won a third consecutive Premier Soccer League title last season under the then caretaker coach Lizwe Sweswe.
However, the club has crashed out of Africa’s elite football club competition in the group stages in the last two campaigns.

Reigning Castle Lager Premier Soccer League champions FC Platinum are worried over the upcoming Total Caf Champions League as their players have not played competitive football for several months.
The Zvishavane-based club last played a competitive match when they convincingly beat Highlanders 2-0 in the Castle Challenge Cup at Barbourfields Stadium in March this year.
That was before all sporting activities were suspended due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
The 2020/21 Caf Champions League was initially set to commence this weekend with preliminary round matches, but it is now likely to roll into life sometime in October.
While football activities have resumed in several African countries, in Zimbabwe there hasn’t been any timeframe set for football’s restart, with the government actually tightening lockdown restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In their first group matches of the 2019/20 edition of the tournament, FCP lost 1-2 away to Sudanese side AL Hilal while Etoile beat record Champions League winners Ahl Ahly 1-0 in Tunisia.
FCP played in the Champions League last season but exited at the group stage without winning a single match.

FC Platinum Now More Experienced In CAF Champions League - Sweswe

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/FC_Platinum" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">FC Platinum (FCP)</a> coach <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Lizwe_Sweswe" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Lizwe Sweswe</a> believes his charges could have done better in the 2-1 loss to Al Hilal in their opening match in Group B in CAF Champions League.
Speaking to reporters after the match played in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum on Friday night, Sweswe said:
<blockquote>I think we could have done better but the boys did well.
From my observation the match was okay. In terms of application they did well, l think we need to work on our defending. These are big matches you learn as you go.</blockquote>
Al Hilal scored both goals through Mohamed Musa Eldai in ether half while Never Tigere scored for FCP direct from a free-kick.
The loss leaves the Zimbabwean champions bottom on the standings after Egypt’s Al Ahly lost 1-0 away to Tunisia’s Etoile du Sahel.
