Thirteen (13) retail outlets and butcheries in Bulawayo were recently found selling meat unfit for human consumption.
The meat was confiscated and disposed of at the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
According to recent council minutes seen by <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/news/article/200008481/13-retailers-censured-for-selling-bad-meat-as-council-seizes-400kg-condemned-meat-from-shops">Southern Eye</a>, Bulawayo City Council (BCC) acting director of health services, Charles Malaba over 99 kilogrammes of chicken and 170 wholesome birds, 24kg of pork, 5.2kg of fish and over 225kg of beef were confiscated from various retail outlets. Said Malaba:

The operation was holistic in its approach as it involved the inspection of butcheries in terms of hygiene and advising on areas of improvement.
Where unwholesome meat was found, it was condemned and disposed of at the SPCA.

In January this year, BCC working with the Veterinary Services Department, carried out inspections when business premises renewed their shop licences and certificates of registration.
It was during the operation that more than 400kg of condemned meat and 170 birds were seized.

Bulawayo City Council Censures 13 Retailers For Selling Bad Meat

The Department of Veterinary Services has launched an operation codenamed “Operation Nyamayabvepi,” in Manicaland Province in a bid to stop the sale of uninspected meat by butcheries.
This follows the outbreak of January disease, a tick-borne disease that has claimed thousands of cattle forcing some farmers to sell sick cattle to butcheries.
The department’s Chief Director Dr Josphat Nyika said they have partnered with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) to set up roadblocks in the province. Nyika said:

The Veterinary Services Department has been alerted and they are now in the area making sure that people are not selling uninspected meat.
The operation is already underway in Manicaland, which is led by Provincial Veterinary Director for Manicaland Dr Guri, and they have partnered with the police and erected roadblocks.

He added that the department has secured enough dip chemicals for the province to last until July this year. Said Nyika:

In solving the January Disease problem, we now have enough dip chemicals in Manicaland to last July/August, this year
We are also bringing all farmers for awareness, and education, about the January Disease.
We are encouraging them not to sell sick animals but rather treat them, we are also monitoring all abattoirs suspected to be selling uninspected meat.

Vet Department Launches Operation Targeting Unspecified Meat

Some butcheries in Mutare and Odzi are reportedly selling meat from cattle infected with suspected theileriosis, a tick-borne disease also known as January disease.
The Manica Post has established that villagers are selling their diseased cattle to butcheries at very low prices to avoid losing their beasts for nothing.
One of the affected villagers, Shupikai Mvurumutiya, revealed that farmers are selling their sick cattle for a maximum of US$50, while under normal circumstances, a bull is sold for US$300. Said the villager:
<blockquote>
We have recorded unprecedented cattle deaths in our village over the last two weeks, and this weekend alone we recorded 20 deaths. The prospect of having the entire herd wiped out by the disease is scary.
As a result, butcheries from Odzi and Mutare have deployed runners in the village to buy and slaughter all the sick cattle for sale.
If they pay you US$50 for one beast, you can consider yourself lucky. It is an opportunity for them to make money and the farmers have no other option but to sell all the sick cattle. We can’t just watch them die.

The reported cattle sales and slaughter are being done without the mandatory permits from veterinary authorities and clearance from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
Manicaland Provincial Veterinary Officer, Charles Guri, said it is illegal to sell meat that has not been examined and certified. Said Guri:

The slaughtering of sick cattle for commercial purposes is illegal. Such meat should not be sold to the public.
We have deployed our officers together with the police in the Mapembe area to get to the bottom of this scandal.
It has come to our attention that certain butcheries had deployed some runners in the affected villages to convince farmers to sell all their sick cattle for a song.
The cattle are being slaughtered without the required permits and clearance from the police, meaning they are breaking the law and must be brought to book.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said police were investigating the reports.

Butcheries Sell Diseased Meat As Theileriosis Wreaks Havoc

Several butcheries in Mutare were closed recently after the City Council’s Health Department raided 29 of them and recovered nearly four tonnes of uninspected meat.
The butcheries could have been selling meat from carcasses of cattle that died from foot-and-mouth, anthrax, anaplasmosis, heartwater and theileriosis.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)’s Anti-Stock Theft Unit in collaboration with city officials launched “Operation Nyama Yabvepi” to clamp down on unscrupulous butcheries that were reportedly buying diseased cattle.
Butcheries that were found with uninspected meat were fined ZWL$500 each. They were also ordered to pay amounts equivalent to 10 per cent of the value of the meat recovered from them to cover the costs of burning it.
According to Manica Post, the butcheries that were found on the wrong side of the law are:
<blockquote>Madziro Butchery in Sakubva, represented by Mr Leon Madziro; Sakubva Cash Butchery, owned by Mr Gibson Zimunya; Time Butchery, operated by Mr Gift Mauchaza; Mutendazvose Butchery, run by Mr Tendai Rice; Zvirimugwara Butchery, represented by one Joram; and Saurombe Butchery, run by Mr Obert Chindudzo.
Omega Butchery, situated along Mutare’s Herbert Chitepo Street and represented by one Jasi, Zvapano Butchery in Chikanga 2, run by Mr Shepherd Mukawirapamwe, as well as Dangamvura Butchery operated by Ms Eugen Marange and Mr Tauya Fore.</blockquote>

Mutare Closes Butcheries For Selling Uninspected Beef

A joint police and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_Council" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Harare City Council</a> operation has resulted in over 25 butcheries’ closure in Harare with 754 business people and vendors arrested for selling uninspected meat, mostly in Dzivaresekwa.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Nyathi</a> revealed that the operation was ongoing. He said:
<blockquote>The operation was conducted in the past seven days following reports that some butcheries were using chemicals to preserve their meat.
Police and health inspectors are still investigating the type of substances that are being used and the effects on consumers.</blockquote>
The operation was launched following complaints that some of the butcheries were selling uninspected meat, or worse still, meat preserved using embalming chemicals.
Formaldehyde, a powerful disinfectant and anti-fungicide but toxic, and listed as carcinogenic, is suspected to have been used by the unscrupulous butcheries.

25 Unlicensed Butcheries Shut Down In Harare

A joint operation by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and Harare City authorities has resulted in the closure of several butcheries in Mabvuku, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Dzivarasekwa" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Dzivarasekwa</a>, Highfield, Southlea Park, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Warren_Park" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Warren Park</a>, Glen View and <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Budiriro">Budiriro</a>.
Some of the butchery owners and meat vendors were arrested during the blitz which targeted butcheries selling uninspected meat believed to be contaminated.
The ongoing operation was confirmed by Deputy Harare police provincial spokesperson Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova and the City Health Services Department.
The seized meat was sent for laboratory testing after some media reports alleged that some butcheries are using embalming chemicals as meat preservatives.
The chemical being allegedly used by the butcheries is formalin which is used for embalming in mortuaries to temporarily prevent the decomposition of human bodies after death.

Harare Butcheries Closed In Joint ZRP, Council Blitz

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has advised members of the public to buy meat from reputable butcheries and abattoirs.
This follows the arrest of five men in Hwedza who were found in possession of six carcasses of cattle.
The police statement reads:
<blockquote>Police in Hwedza recently intercepted a pickup truck laden with six carcasses of cattle which were destined for Harare.
Investigations revealed that the cattle had died of disease and the suspects bought the meat for resale in Harare.
The meat was condemned as unsuitable for human consumption by health inspectors and was destroyed accordingly.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the case. We urge members of the public to buy meat from reputable butcheries and abattoirs.</blockquote>

Police Advise Citizens To Buy Meat From Reputable Butcheries

Beef consumers are at risk of eating contaminated beef after some abattoirs and butcheries are alleged to be taking advantage of an outbreak of an unknown cattle disease in some parts of the country to buy sick animals, slaughter them and then sell the proceeds.
A Bindura farmer who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com had this to say:
<blockquote>We are not sure what this disease is but, it is similar to malaria in human beings. We are worried that this might spread to humans through the sale of beef by those operating butcheries.
Cattle prices have decreased from around RTGS$500 to as little as 100 RTGS$ cash or RTGS$75 hard cash per beast. It is a disaster I tell you.</blockquote>
The mysterious disease, which some have suspect could be January disease or theileriosis has ravaged the three Mashonaland Provinces.
