Police have issued a stern warning to bus operators and their crews, urging them to prioritise road safety and ensure that loaders or conductors (MaHwindi) do not hang from moving vehicles.
This advisory follows a tragic incident on 17 November 2024, when a loader for Dubbies Bus Service lost his life after being run over by the bus.
The accident occurred around 1:30 AM along Dandanda-Jotsholo Road. According to a statement from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the loader was tragically struck and killed by the very vehicle he was loading. It says:

The Police warns bus operators and crew to be road safety conscious and ensure that they do not allow loaders or conductors to hang dangerously on moving vehicles.
This follows a fatal road traffic accident in which a Dubbies Bus Service loader died after being run over by the bus on 17/11/24 at about 0130 hours along Dandanda-Jotsholo Road.
The victim slipped and fell while hanging precariously on the moving bus.

Last month, a tragic incident claimed the life of a 27-year-old bus conductor who fell onto the tarmac and was run over by the bus’ left rear wheels. The accident occurred on 19 October along Nemakonde Road near Conway College.
The conductor had opened the door to pick up a passenger while the bus was still moving, leading to the fatal fall.
The victim suffered severe head injuries and was rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries upon arrival.

Bus Conductor Falls From Moving Bus, Crushed To Death

Police have warned conductors against opening doors while the vehicles are in motion following the tragic death of a 27-year-old bus conductor.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said that on Saturday, October 19, 2024, the conductor opened the door to pick up a passenger while the bus was still moving.
He fell onto the tarmac and was struck by the bus’s left rear wheels along Nemakonde Road near Conway College in Harare. Police said:

The ZRP warns bus and commuter omnibus conductors against opening doors while the vehicles are in motion.
This follows after a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 19/10/24 along Nemakonde Road near Conway College, Harare were a bus conductor (27) died.
The victim allegedly opened the door while the bus was in motion intending to pick a passenger and he fell on the tarmac before he was hit by the bus’ left rear wheels.
The victim sustained head injuries and was ferried to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospital where he succumbed to injuries up on arrival.

In a separate incident, police said that two people died and 11 others were injured on Friday when a Freightliner truck collided with a Nissan Caravan carrying 11 passengers.
The Nissan Caravan was travelling along Dabuka Road, turning onto Harare-Mutare Road, while the Freightliner, which had no passengers, was travelling on Harare-Mutare Road. The impact caused the Nissan Caravan to overturn, killing one passenger instantly. Another victim succumbed to injuries upon arrival at the hospital.
The bodies of the two victims were taken to the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary, while the injured were also admitted at the same hospital.

Bus Conductor Falls From Moving Vehicle And Is Fatally Crushed

A 29-year-old Gokwe man was arrested for stealing a $600 000 bus from Mbare and driving it all the way to his rural home.
Phibion Mavhondo who allegedly intended to travel to Gokwe but did not have bus fare found the bus parked with its engine running at Mbare Bus Terminus.
He first pleaded guilty to theft of a motor vehicle when he appeared before regional magistrate Jacqueline Pratt in Harare on Wednesday, 18 October.
However, when Mavhondo said he had no intention to permanently deprive the owner of the Kukura Kurerwa bus, the magistrate altered his plea to one of not guilty.
He is jointly charged with Christopher Dube (26), who claims he was picked up along Bulawayo Road and offered a lift to Gokwe and had no idea the bus was stolen.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-desperate-to-go-home-drives-away-parked-bus/">The Herald</a> reported that Mavhondo told the court that he decided to take the bus because he had no bus fare to travel to Gokwe.
He said he found the ignition keys in and confirmed that there was enough fuel to take him to Gokwe.
Mavhondo reportedly said his intention was to leave the bus with the keys near his destination to be recovered by its owner.
Prosecutor Lawrence Phiri told the court that on 02 May 2023, the shunting driver of Kukura Kurerwa bus company left his bus parked at the Mbare bus terminus with the engine running and the ignition keys on.
Phiri said Mavhondo and Dube then got into the bus and Mavhondo, who was once a driver for the company, drove the bus.
It is further alleged that later that evening, Mavhondo parked at Masoro in Gokwe and went to visit his girlfriend, leaving Dube on the bus.
Around midnight the owner of the bus, who with two others was tracking down the vehicle, found the bus parked and arrested Dube.
Dube then implicated Mavhondo who was also arrested.
At the time of the recovery, the bus’ value had dropped $3 430 to $596 570 because of damage owing to the long drive and because the spare wheel was missing.
Dube denied the charge and told the court that he was only given a lift by Mavhondo and did not know that the vehicle had been stolen.
He claimed that Mavhondo specifically said he wanted one passenger only going to Gokwe. This was confirmed by Mavhondo in his evidence.

Man Steals Bus At Mbare And Drives Off To Gokwe, Claims He Didn't Have Bus Fare

A Rimbi Travel &amp; Tours bus accident in Mutoko today was filmed from inside the bus as it happened today.
The footage was apparently filmed by the crew of the bus who supposedly wanted to collect evidence of the recklessness of another driver driving a bus, branded Zebra Kiss, which they were trying to overtake. Passengers the bus are heard in the video complaining of the speed and circumstances, but the crew did not relent.
From the video, it seems the buses were attempting to stay in front of each other. This resulted in the two buses driving very close to each other at significant speed.
When the bus in front overtook a slow-moving vehicle, the second bus (whose crew was filming) could not react quickly enough to avoid hitting the vehicle, resulting in the accident. Reports indicate one person died and several were injured in the accident.
According to ZBC, a spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police has verified the incident.

The national speed limit on wide tar roads for public service vehicles and heavy vehicles in Zimbabwe is 80km per hour. However, it is common for buses plying connecting cities and towns to travel at speeds around 120 km per hour (the speed limit for small vehicles).
Bus accidents due to driver recklessness are quite common in the country with at least one fatal accident every other month.

A 17-year-old Mbare boy who was driving a bus with one passenger on board struck and killed a 7-year-old boy on Monday in the same suburb.
The now-deceased boy was playing football with friends along a street in the high-density suburb.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) revealed the tragic incident Tuesday via their official Twitter page but did not give further details on it. Police said:

Police in Harare are investigating a fatal road traffic accident in which an AVM DAF bus, with one passenger on board and being driven by a teenager (17) hit a boy (7) who was playing soccer on the extreme left side of Harare Street near Gwinyai Primary School, Mbare on 05/12/22. The victim died on the spot.

In an unrelated incident, 6 people died while 9 others were injured when a truck rammed into a commuter omnibus along the Kwekwe-Gokwe Highway on Sunday afternoon.
5 people who were aboard the Kwekwe-bound Nissan Caravan died on the spot while another one died upon admission at Kwekwe General Hospital.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident which happened at the 60km peg just outside Kwekwe. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/six-perish-in-horror-crash/">The Chronicle</a> quoted Asst Comm Nyathi as saying:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 60km peg along Kwekwe-Gokwe Road on 3 December 2022 at around 1300 hours, where six people died while nine others were injured.
A motorist who was driving a Scania Rigid truck towards Kwekwe with one passenger on board rammed into a Nissan Caravan vehicle travelling in the same direction with 14 passengers on board.
Five passengers from the Nissan Caravan vehicle died on the spot, while another died on admission at Kwekwe General Hospital.

17-year-old Bus Driver Runs Over, Kills Minor In Mbare

Opposition politician Linda Masarira has urged the government to ban the importation of Chinese-made buses by schools, saying they are sub-standard are therefore prone to fatal crashes.
Masarira said American-made buses are safer for schools as they have been developed over the years for that purpose.
This comes after a Higer Bus, made by Higer Bus Company Limited, a Chinese bus manufacturer, was involved in an accident on Friday night in Nyanga resulting in the death of six pupils from Tynwald High School in Harare who were on a trip. Tweeted Masarira:

The nation is mourning the preventable death of school children because we don’t value the importance of standards. 
This is the greatest difference between Africa and the Developed world. We just do things haphazardly without any standards. When we get pain it hits us hard.
The pain the nation is feeling could have been avoided had we upheld standards.
What is the best standard of the school bus in Zim? Why do all American schools use one bus type when they can afford other expensive elaborate types?
We need to emulate best safety practices! Zimbabwe should stop buying these cheap, useless Chinese buses for schools that have no regard for safety.
Our national vehicle stock will cause more deaths until we understand that we need to do things by standard to ensure the safety of all road users.
The American school bus is yellow (all of them are yellow because yellow is the first colour a human eye can see).
In Zim, any school will paint their bus anyhow. The American school bus is one of the safest vehicles on the road.
The way the body is built is different from these cheap buses. It has been in development for decades.
We need to prioritize the safety of all school-going children by ensuring that they have standard buses which are safe in the case of accidents.

Masarira Urges Govt To Ban Chinese Buses From Schools

Eighteen (18) passengers escaped death by a whisker in the wee hours of Monday after a Harare-bound BM Transport bus they were travelling on caught fire on the outskirts of Masvingo city.
All the passengers and the crew managed to escape from the bus unharmed but various goods were destroyed.
The fire is suspected to have been caused by unknown flammable substances.
By the time the fire brigade and police arrived at the scene of the incident, the bus had already been reduced to a shell.
However, the bus crew and the passengers retrieved some of the goods from the boot of the bus and also removed the trailer.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Masvingo Province Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa said the cause of the fire had not been established. He said:

The cause of the fire is still unknown but we suspect there were some flammable substances in the bus that might have triggered the fire.
Investigations are ongoing and we are still to establish the value of goods burnt in the fire.
The incident happened around 2.30 am when the bus that was carrying 18 passengers and driven by Mr Samkwazi Mabhawa from South Africa to Harare caught fire.
The bus was reduced to a shell by the fire but no one was injured. All the passengers and crew escaped unhurt.
The cause of the fire is still unknown but we suspect there were some flammable substances in the bus that might have triggered the fire.
Investigations are ongoing and we are still to establish the value of goods burnt in the fire.

Insp Dhewa said some passengers noticed smoke coming from the back seat where some goods were stashed.

18 Passengers Escape Death In Masvingo As Bus Catches Fire

An unlicensed 49-year-old man who drove a Hwenje Tours Bus from Harare to Mayo in Rusape has been barred from driving busses for the rest of his life.
Bugner Mafukidze was sentenced to an effective two-year jail sentence by local Magistrate Obedience Matare.
The magistrate also barred Mafukidze from driving any other vehicle for the next six months.
Mafukidze pleaded guilty and in mitigation, he said that he drove the bus after the driver fell sick along the way.
Prosecuting, Oripa Sagandira said that on 20 June 2022, Mafukidze was driving a public service vehicle, a Hwenje Bus Tours, with 40 passengers on board.
He approached a roadblock where he was stopped by police officers who asked for his driver’s license.
Mafukidze told the cops that he did not have a driver’s license and was arrested.

Rusape Man Banned For Life For Driving Bus Without A Licence

Long-distance bus operators plying the Bulawayo to Victoria Falls route are fighting for loading space at illegal pick up points along First Avenue and Lobengula Street.
Dayise Express bus operators are accusing competitor Stallion Cruise of encroaching on their space and loading passengers at their scheduled time.
Speaking during an interview with CITE, Dayise Express General Manager, Nkosana Hlatshwayo said:
<blockquote>
We started plying this route last year. Before we ranked here, ZUPCO was running a slot around 10 am and we engaged them for space.
The permission was granted and we started loading passengers between 4 pm to 6 pm. Other buses that ranked here also agreed to that.
But now we are now facing serious challenges from Stallion Cruise yet it was only coming to offload passengers then maybe carry a few and continue on his journey.
… Stallion Cruise has taken up our route and we don’t understand why. We have a permit to ply the Bulawayo -Victoria falls route but Stallion doesn’t even have a permit for doing so.
Their permit runs from Harare to Victoria Falls, not Bulawayo to Victoria Falls but has been loading passengers every day.
</blockquote>
Hlatshwayo said they were told that Stallion Cruise is owned by President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son and because of that, the company does not need to use permits.
He said they tried to negotiate but their competitor was not forthcoming. Said Hlatshwayo:
<blockquote>
With the way things are appearing and talk that is taking place, the end of the war will see blood spilt here on Bulawayo’s streets. 
We can’t be oppressed when we are supposed to be making a living.
Stallion loads three buses daily and zero for us yet we have workers and rent that has to be paid.
Are we non-entities while Stallion owners are the only ones supposed to make money?
We must resolve this issue in a peaceful way, no one must be greedy.

Meanwhile, General Manager of Stallion Cruise, Samson Mthombeni, told CITE that he had no knowledge there was a challenge at the rank. He added:
<blockquote>
Since 2020 we have operated from that rank, working well with other buses such as Bravo, giving each other chances. We have never quarrelled.
There’s a time when we assigned our bus to some other route but we suddenly returned. But no one declared space for themselves.
What gives them the idea they own this spot. As far as we are concerned ZUPCO is a competitor and does not have authority to apportion to another competitor any space. ZUPCO is just a player in the industry.

Mthombeni admitted the rank was an illegal terminus therefore no one had ownership as the City of Bulawayo can wake up one day and order them to stop using the site. He said:
<blockquote>
If anyone claims to own that spot, they must show documentation because what we are doing is wrong. It’s an illegal rank yet we have been loading.
We should not hide that because authorities never gave us permission just that we want to maximise getting customers.
It is better we keep quiet because we are showing the authorities where we are hiding.

Mthombeni also scoffed at allegations that Stallion Cruise was owned by President Mnangagwa’s son.

Long-distance Bus Operators Clash Over Loading Space

Bus operators are increasing security measures on their buses following a rise in armed robbery cases on buses.
Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation chairman Sam Nanhanga on Sunday said they were going to use metal detectors to prevent people with machetes or guns from boarding buses. Said Nanhanga:

We are going to have metal detectors to make sure that no persons with guns and other harmful metal objects board the bus.
Even if a person is just carrying a machete, they will be detected and will not be allowed to get into the bus.
From now, we are going to use those detecting gadgets because if we do not do that, we will be victims of robberies, especially during this festive season.
This is to ensure the safety of the passengers and the bus crews as well.

Buses have become easy targets for armed robbers who sometimes board buses pretending to be passengers while carrying dangerous weapons.
Last week on Tuesday evening, a gang of armed robbers pounced on a CAG Travellers Coaches bus at the 325km peg along the Harare-Chirundu highway.
The robbers, who have since been arrested, undressed all passengers before escaping with the clothes and more than US$20 000.

In response to the hiked fares, the government lowered the fares for its ZUPCO fleet of buses. Long distance buses reduced their bus fare apparently after government allocated them fuel. The reduced demand also contributed as there are fewer people looking to travel for the holidays after Christmas.
Trips such as the Harare-Gokwe which <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/12/25/holiday-travellers-shocked-by-bus-fares/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">were now $45</a> are back to $15.
Said one bus operator in response to the Herald:
<blockquote>At times we get fuel from the Government, so we maintain our fares. Our company gets 2 000 litres of fuel from the Government and it lasts two days. We have 13 buses. Sometimes we are forced to hike fares due to the fuel shortages. We are sometimes forced to go the black market for supplies.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is going through a fuel crisis that has lasted months. The crisis caused by yet another ongoing crisis – the currency crisis which has seen many people’s money lose value as rates have climbed drastically over the past several months.

Buses Reduce Prices Following Fuel Allocations & Dampened Demand

Long distance bus operators have increased their fares by up to 100 percent due to fuel shortages that are forcing them to buy it on the black market. They have however not ruled out increasing the fares due to the festive season.
The Chronicle reports that buses plying the Bulawayo-Nkayi route have increased fares from an average of $10 to $20 while those that travel the Bulawayo-Kezi road have increased their fares to $15 from $8. Bus fares for Bulawayo-Tsholotsho routes have also gone up as well as fares for the Bulawayo- Gwanda and Bulawayo- Filabusi routes. Luxury buses plying the Bulawayo-Harare road have also increased their fares from $40 to $50 while other buses have increased fares to between $15 and $30.
