Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona, said that a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) is being structured to address the rehabilitation of the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road, which is currently in poor condition.
Speaking at a media briefing in Harare on Monday, 17 March, Mhona said the PPP arrangement is undergoing due process, including a feasibility study and other preliminary assessments.
He urged the public to be patient, saying the estimated timeline for completing the rehabilitation of this vital stretch of road is 36 months.
Mhona also emphasized the capital-intensive nature of such infrastructure projects, revealing that the global average cost for road reconstruction is approximately US$1 million per kilometre. He said:

Zimbabwe’s entire road network spans close to 90 000 kilometres, including gravel roads in rural areas. Under normal circumstances, we would appeal to financiers for concessionary facilities with flexible grace periods to fund such projects. However, the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe have significantly impacted our ability to secure funding for infrastructure development.

The Minister said the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) has played a crucial role in collecting funds to ensure the maintenance of the country’s roads.
The Ministry of Transport recently announced that sections of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway, in urgent need of repair, are being addressed through a collaborative effort between the Department of Roads and Bitumen World. It added that work is already underway, with teams stationed in Hwange, Halfway, and Insuza.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development (MOTID) has said a photo circulating on social media, showing three people posing in a pothole, was not taken on any part of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway, as has been claimed.

In a statement issued on Monday afternoon, MOTID acknowledged that some sections of the highway are in urgent need of rehabilitation.
However, the ministry asserted that the images in the post do not correspond to any part of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway. The statement reads:

It has come to our attention that a social media post is circulating, showing 3 people posing in a pothole on a road claimed to be part of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway.
While we acknowledge that certain sections of the highway are in dire need of rehabilitation, the images in the post do not correspond to any section of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway.
The sections requiring urgent attention are currently being addressed through a collaborative effort between the Department of Roads and Bitumen World.
Work is already underway, with teams camped in Hwange, Halfway, and Insiza to ensure the road is rehabilitated efficiently.

The Transport Ministry said a pothole photo circulating online is not from the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway. They admit some parts of the road need fixing but say the photo is not from there. Transport Ministry Says Viral Pothole Photo Not from Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway

The deteriorating condition of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway has raised growing concerns among motorists in recent years, as navigating the road has become increasingly challenging.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona recently told parliamentarians that the government plans to repair and expand the entire stretch of the road from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls. 
While Mhona did not provide a specific timeline, he said that the Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway is among several major roads across the country set for rehabilitation.
Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, however, argues that the highway’s poor condition is a result of government neglect, pointing out that the Zimbabwean government continues to collect toll fees on the road, which he claims are often misappropriated. Said Chin’ono:

The most popular tourist attraction in Southern Africa is Victoria Falls.
This is the current state of the road that links Victoria Falls and Zimbabwe’s second-biggest city, Bulawayo.

Imagine having the blessing of Victoria Falls in your country yet failing to fix the road that takes tourists there due to the looting of public funds.

"Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road Now Looks Like An Abandoned World War II Battle Zone"

Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona said that the government intends to repair and expand the entire stretch of the road from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls, which is in poor condition.
Speaking last week in the National Assembly, Mhona was addressing concerns raised by Hwange East legislator Joseph Bonda regarding the government’s sluggish efforts to rehabilitate the deteriorating Beitbridge-Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway. Said Bonda:

The minister touched on almost all the roads, but I want to remind him that there is this road from Victoria Falls to Beitbridge, maybe if he had actually touched on it, even if there are some other arrangements that are (there).

In his response, Mhona acknowledged that the question had been raised previously, adding that the roads he mentioned were not the only ones requiring attention. He said:

My apologies, that route is very important because that accommodates a lot of international delegates.
We have a very important meeting which will be held this year. I spoke focusing in this area in Mashonaland Central but, if I simply sit down without mentioning it, people will say I did not mention it.
We go to Mukumbura Border Post, that is the same route which leads us Mozambique. If we focus on Midlands, or Chikwalakwala, or Gweru, if I mention any of those areas, others will say “why didn’t you mention up to the border post?”
Those are some of the roads that we have in the pipeline. We have close to 760km from Beitbridge to Bulawayo, then from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls.

Mhona said he was happy that there is a company which is working on those roads. He said:

We mentioned that they are working together with a certain company, we agreed that the company should concentrate on the worst affected areas.
(On the) 760km stretch, the worst areas are Hwange to Victoria Falls, Lupane to Bulawayo. Those are the areas which are actually affected.
We have a company which is going to resume its duties in repairing all those roads.

Mhona mentioned other roads that also need to be repaired, an acknowledgement that the country’s entire road network is in a sorry state. He said:

All those roads which are slightly damaged, they (the company) will simply repair them. Our aim is to expand the whole road from Bulawayo to Victoria Falls.
We are (also) going to start from Kwekwe, going to Lupane, Silobela, Lupane, Nkayi and so on. Those are some of the big roads which people are worried about.
Do not despair, I might have omitted some names of places. Other people from Mashonaland West might (want the) Binga-Cross Dete (road fixed), then we link it with the route to Bulawayo.

Motorists are complaining about the terrible condition of the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo highway, which has become almost impossible to drive on.
The road is full of potholes, gullies, and mud-filled craters, causing many to avoid it and use a dusty, makeshift alternative route instead.
Near Lupane, villagers, often children and women, are trying to fix the road themselves using ordinary soil.
Truck driver Thomas Moyo, who often uses this route, shared his experience with <a href="https://vicfallslive.co.zw/vic-falls-road-crisis-motorists-slam-undrivable-highway/">VicFallsLive</a>. He said:

I’ve been driving for over 20 years, but this road is the worst I’ve ever seen.
It’s like they’ve abandoned us. We’re forced to create our own paths, but even those are becoming increasingly difficult to navigate.

Another motorist, Sarah Ndlovu, said the poor condition of the road has not only increased the risk of accidents but also caused damage to vehicles. She said:

It’s not just the damage to our vehicles; it’s the risk of accidents and injuries. I’ve seen cars stuck in the potholes, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets seriously hurt.

The bad condition of the road is also making travel times longer, with some motorists saying it takes up to 10 hours to drive 400 kilometres.
James Dube, a tourist operator, said the Victoria Falls-Bulawayo highway needs urgent repairs given that it leads to one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions.

The road from Victoria Falls to Bulawayo is in very bad shape with lots of holes and mud. People are trying to fix it themselves using soil. Drivers say it's the worst road they've ever seen and it's causing damage to vehicles. The bad road is also making travel longer and more dangerous. Tour operators are calling for urgent repairs because it leads to a famous tourist spot. Motorists Lament "Deplorable" State Of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road

Two people were killed while 51 others were injured when a truck that they were travelling on was involved in an accident along Bulawayo -Victoria Falls Road on Friday.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the accident occurred at around 6:40 PM at the 330-kilometre peg along Bulawayo -Victoria Falls Road.
Reports indicate that the Shackman Tipper truck, which was carrying 69 passengers, overturned and landed on its left side.
16 passengers were able to escape the incident unhurt.
Meanwhile, the bodies of the victims were taken to Hwange Colliery Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

A big truck with many people inside flipped over on the road. 2 people died, and 51 people got hurt. The accident happened in Zimbabwe in the evening. Some people were lucky and were not hurt. The Government says the rehabilitation of the dilapidated Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway has started, with Bitumen World (Private) Limited teams already on the ground.
This follows an urgent call by motorists and business leaders for the Government to repair the badly damaged road.
Addressing delegates during the 2023 Infrastructure Summit and Expo, which was officially opened by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Friday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona, said funds have been released for the rehabilitation of the road. He said:

We thank His Excellency for being a listening President. You don’t just hear, but act.
Last week we were inundated with calls especially from this province (Matabeleland North) complaining about the state of Victoria Falls Road, and others were saying: ‘Minister have you driven on that road yourself?.
I want to thank you Your Excellency in that when you directed and mandated me this last week that you wanted the road works to start progressively before you land in this particular city, and precisely this has happened.
I want to thank you Your Excellency for the money you have given us, the contractor is now back on the road doing the work, and for this you deserve applause.

The Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Highway is a strategic trade route on the regional north-to-south corridor, linking Zimbabwe with South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia as well as the DRC.
The deplorable state of the road has been blamed on the increased number of haulage trucks that mainly transport coal from different mining companies.

Rehabilitation Of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road Resumes - Minister

A section of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road will be temporarily closed in Hwange to allow for the construction of a crossing pipeline by Afcons Vijeta-JV on behalf of the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC).
In a statement seen by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/bulawayo-vic-falls-road-closed/">Chronicle</a>, Afcons Vijeta-JV and ZPC said the construction work will include the deployment of heavy machinery between the 337km and 338.5km pegs in Hwange. Read the notice:

The public and motorists are advised to be extremely cautious as Afcons Vijeta-JV will be executing construction works on behalf of the Zimbabwe Power Company for crossing the pipeline, which essentially includes deployment of heavy machinery at Chainage 337 to 338.5 in Hwange. Motorists are also urged to observe speed limit signs as they approach the construction site at the highway and follow direction signs to the detour provided.

Motorists have been requested to fully cooperate with flagmen deployed at the site for smooth movement of traffic.
Afcons Vijeta-JV, an Indian consortium, was awarded the contract to rebuild the Deka pump station and build the 42 km pipeline that will transport water from the Zambezi river to the Hwange power plant.

Section Of Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road To Be Temporarily Closed

Five people were injured on Wednesday when a Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) bus veered off the road, hit a tree and landed on its side.
The accident happened along the Bulawayo-Victoria falls road, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200003324/five-injured-in-bus-accident">NewsDay Zimbabwe</a> reported citing Matabeleland North Acting police Spokesperson Assistant Inspector Christopher Mahohoma. 
The officer said the bus driver lost control of the vehicle in which the injured people were travelling in. Mahohoma said:

The bus had 19 passengers on board and the five injured were not seriously hurt but the bus was badly damaged.
Drivers must be cautious on the roads when they are using public roads.
</blockquote>
Indications are that Mandlenkosi Manda (31) who was driving an unregistered Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) bus lost control when he tried to overtake another vehicle upon reaching the 1km peg along the Bulawayo-Victoria falls road.
Meanwhile, five days ago, 4 people including the driver, died on the spot while 18 others were injured on the same road when a Binga bus veered off the road.

Five Injured As ZUPCO Bus Veers Off The Road, Hits A Tree, Lands On Its Side

Three people died while two others were injured when a Fun Cargo vehicle they were travelling in veered off the road on Saturday.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the accident that happened along Bulawayo- Victoria Falls Road. Read the statement:
