In a notice, the embassy said it will be closed from Monday 19th December and will resume on Wednesday 28th December 2022. Reads the notice:

British Embassy In Harare To Close For Christmas

The United Kingdom embassy in Harare has dismissed as fake a document being shared online pretending to show a British government letter written in 2009.
This comes after another document was shared widely on Friday purportedly written by the UK government in 2001. In a message posted on its Twitter handle, the UK embassy said:
<blockquote>We’ve been alerted to another fake document being shared online, this time pretending to show a UK government letter written in 2009. We urge you not to share.</blockquote>
While the UK embassy did not identify the latest fake document, ZANU PF activists have been sharing on social media platforms a document dated 2009. Below is the document:

Dear Mr Miliband,
Further to your request at the meeting with Zimbabwe Prime Minister, Mr Morgan Tsvangirai, we have attached the financial statement of funding to civil society organisations in Zimbabwe for September.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has met recently with Dr Alex Magaisa who is chairperson of the Zimbabwe Diaspora Development Interface (ZDDI), an organisation whose objectives are in line with our national and international objectives.
I have also attached a list of trustees in the organisation whom we have met with or are mentioned in the documents.
We have been funding the organisation as part of the wider initiative of funding civil society organisations to promote change in Zimbabwe.
We believe civil society has a much greater role in the transformation of Zimbabwe. Britain, as a former colony, cannot be seen interfering directly to effect regime change.
Other organisations that have been identified and funded include Global Zimbabwe Forum, Trust Africa and Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa.

British Embassy Dismisses As Fake Another Letter Shared Online

The British Embassy in Harare has expressed concern over the enforced disappearance of three MDC Alliance activists who were arrested on Wednesday during a flash demo in Warren Park, a suburb in Harare.
In a post on Twitter, the UK Embassy urged Zimbabwean authorities to locate the missing activists and for the security services to act in line with the national Constitution. It said:
<blockquote>Concerned to hear lawyers still not told of whereabouts of 3 female MDC officials reportedly arrested in Harare.
Urge authorities to use their resources to locate urgently in line with security services’ obligation to act at all times in line with Zimbabwe’s law and constitution.</blockquote>
Earlier on Thursday, Rosely Hanzi of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said they were yet to locate the three MDC Alliance youths. Hanzi said:
<blockquote>ZLHR Lawyers searched at Hre Central, Milton Park, Warren Park, Rhodesville, Mbare, Matapi, Stoddart and Braeside Police Stations, failing to locate Joana Mamombe, Cecilia and Netsai. Legally speaking, this is enforced disappearance and a violation of Section 86(3) of Constitution.
Very sad that state has a penchant of misdirecting a lot of energy, resources, time violating rights rather than comply with Constitution and investing more energy, time and resources fighting COVID-19.</blockquote>
Cecilia Chimbiri, Netsai Marova and Joana Mamombe were arrested in Warren Park on Wednesday while demonstrating against the government’s failure to provide safety nets for the vulnerable during the lockdown but appear not to have been taken to a police station and their whereabouts are unknown.

British Embassy Urges Zimbabwean Govt To Locate 3 Missing MDCA Activists

British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing has said that her country will support a programme by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help Zimbabwe clear its foreign arrears. Laing revealed this after a meeting with Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube in Harare on Tuesday. Speaking to the media after the meeting, Laing said,
<blockquote>We are here to give that support to try and encourage a process back to an IMF programme, perhaps through an interim staff monitoring programme as soon as possible…We will be tracking both pathways, the economic pathway and political pathway. We want Zimbabwe to succeed.</blockquote>
Laing also wrote on her social media account that she has called for further political reforms. Said Laing,
<blockquote>Useful meeting with Mthuli Ncube today. We discussed the cholera outbreak, challenges ahead for Zimbabwe &amp; GOZ’s plans for economic reform. I stressed the importance of further political reforms and for Commission of inquiry to ensure accountability for Aug 1 violence.</blockquote>

We Want Zim To Succeed, We Will Support IMF Programme: UK Ambassador

The British Embassy in Harare has said that it has been involved in talks with Zimbabwean authorities to ensure that opposition politician Tendai Biti will be granted his constitutional rights. This comes after Biti was handed over to the Zimbabwean authorities by their Zambian counterparts in defiance of a court order from the Zambian High Court. Biti was denied political asylum by the Zambians who said that his case was very weak as there was no breakdown of law and order in Zimbabwe.
Writing on Twitter, the British Embassy said,

We continue to follow Tendai Biti’s case very closely. UK diplomats spoke to Zambian and Zimbabwean authorities overnight. We (and others) are seeking clear assurances from the Zimbabwean authorities that his safety will be guaranteed and constitutional rights fully respected.</blockquote>

UK  Seeks Assurances That Tendai Biti's Rights Will Be Respected

The United Kingdom allegedly insisted that <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/08/07/full-text-eu-canada-usa-switzerland-condemn-violence-and-acts-of-intimidation-targeted-at-opposition-leaders-supporters/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">the joint statement released by the European Union, the United States, Canada and Switzerland</a>, should not describe the shooting of civilians by the army as an excessive or disproportionate use of force. Instead, the United Kingdom insisted that the statement should condemn “the eruption of violence” as they wanted Nelson Chamisa to take some of the heat. The statement has been described in some quarters as benign compared to statements from the Commonwealth Observer Group and the Australian Embassy.
United Kingdom publication, The Times wrote,
<blockquote>The statement, released yesterday, failed to attribute the deaths of six civilians to the army, which turned live fire on unarmed demonstrators after the disputed ballot. Instead, the heads of missions of EU states in Zimbabwe and those of the US, Canada and Switzerland urged President Mnangagwa’s government to respect the rights of citizens and to ensure that the defence forces “act with restraint”.</blockquote>
Piers Pigou, an analyst with the International Crisis Group also told The Times,
<blockquote>I think that any statement that highlights the MDC role in any violence is irresponsible if at the same time there is a downplaying of the excessive use of force by the security apparatus. There is clear evidence of assaults, abductions, torture and sexual violence being used right now against MDC supporters and any view that points to the party’s culpability in inciting any state-sponsored violence will be seen by Zanu (PF) as just a green light to continue these actions.</blockquote>
British Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Catriona Laing has repeatedly been accused of being partisan towards President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
