Two police officers based in Norton were arrested by their colleagues with the assistance of workers at Sunny Yifeng as they attempted to evade capture shortly after accepting a US$5,000 bribe from the company.
Sunny Yifeng is a Chinese-owned tile manufacturer situated along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, just outside Norton.
As reported by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/drama-as-cops-caught-with-bribe-money-at-chinese-tile-manufacturer/">ZimLive</a>, the officers, Patrick Kwashira and Tangai Matomati, both residents of Norton, appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova on Thursday, facing charges of extortion. They were subsequently remanded out of custody on US$200 bail each.
According to prosecutors, Matomati was the investigating officer in an assault case involving one Tapfuma Nyahonda, who had filed a complaint against Hou Zesong, Methew Mapfumo, Patience Zinyimo, and Brit Mutatsi.
The court heard that Nyahonda later withdrew the assault charges against the four individuals.
It is alleged that Matomati got information that Nyahonda withdrew his case of assault without their knowledge. Prosecutors said:

Accused persons then notified their officer-in-charge about the incident alleging that Tapfuma Nyahonde supplied false information that he was assaulted by Hou Zesong, Methew Mapfumo, Patience Zinyimo and Brit Mutatsi.
Officer-in-Charge instructed accused persons to open a docket and investigate the matter against Tapfuma Nyahonda.
Accused persons then took advantage of the docket and communicated using cell phone numbers 0775630250 and 0779338288 with Sunny Yifeng Tiles Zimbabwe Company demanding US$5,000 alleging that its employees Terrify Taruvinga and Wang- Xioa-Jin had forced Tapfuma Nyahonda to withdraw an assault case which accused persons were handling.

A trap was set by the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Internal Investigations unit to catch the two accused officers.
They were invited to the premises of Sunny Yifeng Tiles Zimbabwe Company to collect the bribe money they had demanded.
It is alleged that Taruvinga handed over the bribe to Kwashira in the presence of Matomati in one of the company’s offices, where the pair had been escorted.
As they were leaving the office, ZRP Internal Investigations officers intercepted them, catching Kwashira red-handed with the bribe money.
In the chaos, Matomati managed to flee, while Kwashira dropped the bribe money, a CZ pistol magazine loaded with nine rounds, and his personal belongings before attempting to escape.
He was ultimately apprehended with the assistance of employees from Sunny Yifeng Tiles Zimbabwe Company.

Two policemen from Harare, Sergeant James Chifamba (46) and Constable Trymore Mukunza (36), were suspended from duty after being captured on camera allegedly accepting bribes from motorists.
The police are investigating not only the two officers but also motorists and commuter omnibus (kombi) crews who are suspected of offering the bribes.
Chifamba and Mukunza were charged with criminal abuse of office as public officers and appeared in court before Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa. They were remanded in custody.
Last week, a kombi driver, Tinashe Madzima, and a conductor, Ishamel Gonyora, were arrested after being seen in the video offering bribes to the policemen. Two commuter omnibuses were also impounded.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that they are continuing to identify other suspects involved in the bribery scheme, and further arrests may follow. He said:

Two Policemen Suspended After Viral Bribery Video Emerges

A kombi driver, Tinashe Madzima (31), and conductor, Ishmael Gonyora, were arrested on Wednesday at George Shopping Centre in Ruwa on charges of bribery.
The arrests followed a recent crackdown by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) after two police officers, Sergeant James Chifamba and Constable Trymore Mukunza, were detained.
The officers were implicated in a viral video circulating on social media, which showed them accepting bribes from pirate kombis, taxis, and registered public service vehicles along the Harare-Mutare Road, near the Mabvuku turn-off.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that Madzima and Gonyora were identified in the video as they were seen offering bribes to the officers. Said Comm. Nyathi:

Subsequently, the Police impounded two Toyota Hiace kombis, registration numbers ABZ 1395 and ABZ 8264 in connection with the incident.
Investigations by the Police revealed that Tinashe Madzima was driving a Toyota Hiace Kombi, registration number ABZ 1395 and was captured in the video approaching a police officer to offer a bribe. 
Meanwhile, Ishmael Gonyora, the conductor of a kombi ABZ 8264, was also seen offering a bribe to the police officers.

Meanwhile, the two police officers, Chifamba and Mukunza, appeared before Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa, facing charges of criminal abuse of office as public officers.
Both the State and defence counsel were expected to submit written submissions by Friday, with a ruling scheduled for November 11.
Prosecutor Anesu Chirenje outlined the charges, explaining that the two officers had been deployed last week to conduct traffic enforcement duties at the Mabvuku traffic lights along Mutare Road. Their assigned task was to stop motor vehicles and check for any traffic violations.
However, contrary to their duties, Chifamba and Mukunza allegedly accepted bribes from drivers whose vehicles they had stopped, instead of conducting the required checks.
The State argues that the officers acted in favour of the motorists by accepting the bribes, thereby neglecting their official responsibilities.
Chirenje also revealed that the State has evidence, including a video recording, documenting the events in question.

Kombi Driver And Conductor Arrested For Bribing Police Officers In Mabvuku Turn-off Viral Video

Police have confirmed the arrest of two officers caught in a viral video taking bribes from motorists on the Harare-Mutare Road near the Mabvuku turn-off.
The video, which lasts over five minutes, was recorded by a motorist on Saturday, November 2, and has since gone viral.
In a statement released on Sunday, November 3, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests of Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva, saying they are facing both disciplinary and criminal charges. Reads the statement:

Mabvuku Turn-off Bribe-taking Police Officers Arrested

Two Presidential Guard and three Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officers are facing allegations of extorting US$2,000 from a Chinese miner, Enjie Zhang, at the Murodzi mining claim in Mazowe.
As reported by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/cio-presidential-guard-officers-up-for-us2000-blackmail-against-chinese-miner/">ZimLive</a>, the suspects, identified as Chamunorwa Victor Chinorwiwa (32), Hilary Maravanyika (28), Tawanda Ngoshi (39), Samuel Zvishamiso Simbabure, and Respect Zuva, allegedly posed as members of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) who were on duty.
The five, also facing robbery charges, were scheduled to be back in court on Tuesday for a ruling on their application challenging placement on remand.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority, on October 19, 2024, around midday, the group connived and proceeded to the Murodzi mining claim in Mazowe.
They allegedly ordered the miner Enjie Zhang and his 25 workers to gather and sit down in one place. Said the NPA in an outline of the charges:

Accused person one (Simbabure) and his accomplices ordered the complainant and the gathered mine workers to remain still as he would proceed to shoot them if they attempted to flee whilst showing a pistol which was placed on his waist.
The accused persons ordered the complainant and his fellow Chinese nationals who were present, Jinliang Xue, Hang Hainglin and Shan Dong Zhou to produce their identity documents, mining certificates and work permits.
Complainant and his Chinese counterparts produced their identity documents but failed to produce the mining certificates and work permits which they stated were in the custody of the company general manager, one identified as Hu, who was in Harare.
The accused persons accused the complainant and his fellow workers of conducting illegal mining operations in the area and demanded US$2,000 cash from the Chinese nationals so that they could release them.
They ordered the complainant to contact Hu so that she could bring the needed bribe money and the complainant complied.

The court heard that Simbabure communicated with Hu using the complainant’s phone to arrange for the bribe money to be delivered to Ngoshi.
Hu then contacted informant Godfrey Zambuko, who works for Holdenfield Investments in Harare, instructing him to go to Zimbabwe House and hand over the US$2,000 bribe to Ngoshi. Said the NPA:

Informant indeed proceeded to Zimbabwe House where he gave the US$2,000 bribe money to Ngoshi who is currently at large.
</blockquote>
According to court papers, one Chinese national, Hang Hainglin, escaped from the mining site and went to a nearby mine also owned by Holdenfields Investments.
There, he was given US$1,000 by another Chinese national to deliver to the accused persons in exchange for their freedom. Said the prosecution:

Kelvinator Don Paricha, employed as a Chinese company interpreter, went to the accused persons and gave them US$800 which resulted in the release of the complainant and the other mine workers. The accused persons then drove off in their getaway motor vehicle.

On October 21, 2024, Simbabure called Godfrey Zambuko from his mobile phone, inviting him to Zimbabwe House to discuss the need for an additional bribe payment. Said the NPA:

On October 22, 2024, the informant then advised the President’s Department about the issue and the two went to Zimbabwe House where they met accused one and two leading to their arrest.
Upon arrest the two accused persons implicated four accomplices who are still at large.

Presidential Guard, CIO Officers Accused Of Extorting Chinese Miner

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has initiated criminal investigations against a police officer who was filmed assaulting a fellow officer inside a police station.
The officer, identified as Constable Foreman Matayaya, allegedly attacked his colleague and damaged state property after a road traffic incident involving his car.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, on Saturday, warned against the misuse of social media to spread negative narratives about the police force. Below is the statement issued by Comm. Nyathi:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is concerned by the abuse and misuse of social media platforms by both police officers and the public to portray a negative narrative of actual situations.
This is mostly done to drive a certain agenda which is beneficial to the parties concerned and to mislead the public with false information.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will thus ensure that comprehensive investigations are conducted and the truth revealed to the public. In the process, the law will be applied to the offending parties without fear or favour.
In this regard, reference is made to a viral video circulating on social media platforms in which two police officers are alleged to be fighting over bribe money in Mutare.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police puts on record that Constable Foreman Matayaya (38) was involved in a road traffic accident at Area 12 Depression, Dangamvura, Mutare, which involved three vehicles.
Constable Andrew Mazhindu attended to the scene and instructed the three parties to drive their vehicles to the police station.
The police officer escorted Foreman Matayaya’s vehicle to the police station after he had refused to comply with the instructions.
On reaching the police station, Foreman Matayaya became confrontational and violent. He did not want his vehicle to be impounded or the road traffic accident to be recorded in police records.
Above all, he claimed that Constable Mazhindu was siding with the other two drivers instead of him.
He assaulted Constable Mazhindu who had attended to the scene and damaged state property while raising false allegations.
Sergeant Musonza and Constable Mataringe had to intervene and stopped Foreman Matayaya from destroying police records and assaulting Constable Mazhindu.
The suspect was subsequently arrested for the due process of the law to take its course.
The suspect is facing both criminal and disciplinary charges.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police Command condemns the deplorable conduct by Foreman Matayaya and the false information which accompany the viral video circulating on social media platforms.

A member of the public assisted the police with his private motor vehicle to pursue the suspect to Flo Garages, Masvingo where the suspect became confrontational and violent towards the police while recording a video.
The Police subsequently arrested the suspect for the due processes of the law to be followed.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores the public to desist from being confrontational with the police in order to raise false allegations as a way to attract public sympathy.

ZRP Warns Against False Allegations Following Bribery Harassment Video

A Ruwa Local Board Municipal Police Officer, Lucia Sithole (44), was arrested on Friday, September 27, by members of the Southern Africa Regional Anti-Corruption Organisation (SARACO) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe from a commuter omnibus driver.
According to a memo addressed to the SARACO Chief Corruption Prevention Intelligence Officer by an Assistant Deputy Director of Operations, Sithole now faces charges of criminal abuse of office as defined by Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act [Chapter 9:23].
The allegations are that on September 27, 2024, at approximately 8:20 AM, Sithole and two other municipal police officers were on duty conducting traffic enforcement along the Harare-Mutare highway near the George shopping Centre in Ruwa. Reads the memo:

A Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus registration No AFE 7538 travelling from Harare to Goromonzi stopped at the market Bus stop along the highway and suddenly a municipal traffic officer emerged and placed a steel bar in the wheel of the commuter omnibus.
</blockquote>
All passengers were ordered to disembark and three municipal police officers jumped inside and ordered the driver to proceed to their council yard. As this was happening the other male officer was writing a fine ticket.
It is alleged that the driver of the kombi and the three municipal police officers left for the council yard, and along the way just near the shops, Sithole asked for twenty dollars from the driver.
The driver said that he had US$10 but she rejected it and insisted on $20.
After the driver gave her two US$10 notes, Sithole then instructed him to make a U-turn and drop them off immediately. Reads the memo:

The driver drove back to where he had dropped his passengers and advised the three Southern Africa Regional Anti Corruption Organisation members who had earlier on introduced themselves to him before boarding the commuter omnibus at Fourth Street.

The three members of SARACO contacted their female counterpart nearby and approached the municipal police officers.
They requested that the officers empty their pockets of all cash, but Sithole refused to comply.
Subsequently, the SARACO members searched her and discovered US$45 in her shirt pockets. Two of the US$10 bills matched the photographs taken by the kombi conductor before the money was handed over to the driver.
Sithole was then arrested and taken to Ruwa Police Station, where Chief Inspector Tinarwo was informed.
A docket was opened for violating Section 174 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, registered under ZRP Ruwa RRB number 6160549.

A police officer in Ruwa was caught taking a bribe from a driver by SARACO. The officer, Lucia Sithole, along with two others, stopped a commuter omnibus and demanded money. Ruwa Municipal Police Officer Caught In Bribery Sting By SARACO

A 28-year-old female nurse stationed at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare was recently arraigned on bribery allegations before the Harare Magistrates’ Court.
The court remanded Memory Mukura out of custody to the 16th of May 2024.
Prosecutors allege that Mukura approached two General Nurses trainees at the Gwanda Multi-Disciplinary School (GMDS) and offered to help them pass their examinations.
The two complainants sat for their final exams on the 7th and 8th of March 2024.
While the trainees were waiting for their results, Mukura informed them that they had failed, but her uncle at the Nurses Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ) was going to “ensure that they score favourable marks” for a fee of US$500 each.
The complainants promptly alerted the authorities at GMDS and they reported the matter to the Nurses’ Council of Zimbabwe (NCZ).
A report was made to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) by the NCZ and they set a trap for Mukura.
She was arrested on the 7th of May 2024, after allegedly receiving US$500 from the complainants.

Parirenyatwa Hospital Nurse Arrested For Demanding Bribes

Two female police officers stationed at Chinhoyi Police Station were recently arraigned before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court facing corruption charges after they allegedly solicited a bribe from a suspect who was due to appear in court.
It is alleged that on 02 February 2024, Sergeant Theoline Mapako and Constable Gracious Hove solicited a US$100 bribe from Thandeka Chitombo who had been arrested for impersonating a state official (CIO).
The bribe was to ensure that Chitombo gets bail.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Chitombo advised the police officers that she only had US$32.
They told her that they had already made an arrangement with her father and he had promised to give them US$50.
When Chitombo was given US$50 by her father, the police officers took her to the ladies’ toilets on the court premises where she handed over US$80 as bribe money.
After the transaction, the police officers escorted her to court where she was remanded in custody as the Prosecutor opposed bail.
The matter came to light when Chitombo was denied bail and she reported the issue to the prison officers who then alerted the police.
Mapako and Hove will appear before a magistrate on 19 March for trial.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Anti-Corruption_Commission/">Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC)</a> has announced that a senior officer in the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) has been convicted and sentenced to four years in prison for extortion.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, ZACC said Patrick Badza, the convicted officer, demanded a payment of USD9,900 from a Chinese investor who sought work permits for his workers. Badza threatened to deny the permits if the payment was not made.
The ZACC investigated the matter and arrested Badza, who subsequently faced trial and was found guilty.
The issue of extortion in Zimbabwe remains a persistent problem, as evidenced by recent reports of corruption involving law enforcement officials. In April 2022, three officers from different security agencies were arrested and charged with soliciting a bribe at the Beitbridge border post. The accused individuals, who were part of a joint operation against smuggling and illegal border crossings, allegedly demanded a bribe of R6,500 from a motorist travelling from South Africa. The victim paid the bribe and subsequently reported the incident to a relative who then filed a complaint with the Beitbridge Customs and Excise Regional Manager. The matter was then reported to the police, leading to the arrest of the three officers who were subsequently charged with criminal abuse of office. The magistrate remanded them in custody after the prosecutor successfully opposed bail. 
In 2019, the Zimbabwe Morning Post reported that some retired ministers from the ruling party ZANU-PF, who were employed at the party’s headquarters, had taken over the mandate of the Zimbabwe Investment Authority (ZIA) to promote and facilitate foreign and local investment. According to the publication, investors were directed to the ZANU-PF headquarters to discuss their business interests before going to the ZIA. The report suggested that these <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2019/06/10/zanu-pf-heavyweights-scaring-investors-by-demanding-huge-bribes/">ZANU-PF officials were demanding large kickbacks from investors as facilitation fees.</a> This situation raised concerns about the credibility of the ZIA and the country’s investment climate.
These reports emerged after Zimbabwe lost a billion-dollar investment from Dangote in 2015 due to demands for kickbacks from former first lady Grace Mugabe’s team.
Recently, President <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Emmerson_Mnangagwa/">Emmerson Mnangagwa</a> acknowledged the presence of and expressed concern about the corruption and bureaucracy that is scaring away investors. He called for an end to the practice of moving investors from office to office and person to person, which often leads to disappointment and frustration.

ZACC Confirms Senior CIO Officer Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison For Extortion

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) is investigating executives from the Industrial Development Corporation of Zimbabwe (IDC) who reportedly attempted to “bribe” President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga using fertilisers.
The probe was launched after some disgruntled IDC employees presented a dossier to ZACC of alleged corrupt activities by IDC general manager Winstone Makamure and chairperson Tome that included the flouting of tender procedures.
Makamure and Tome allegedly bought fertilisers without following the due tender process and tried to donate them to Mnangagwa and Chiwenga.
The two IDC executives were allegedly trying to influence the two leaders to give them an audience so that they could defend themselves against corruption allegations levelled against them.
However, Mnangagwa and Chiwenga are said to have refused to entertain Makamure and Tome. Part of the dossier submitted to ZACC reads:

Tome is pushing to be appointed substantive general manager so that he can cover up his shenanigans.
He favours management instead of general staff in terms of salaries and benefits.
Resultantly, the chairman and the general manager are in connivance to ensure that their misdeeds are covered up.
They bought 30 tonnes of fertilisers from (a company named) and donated to HE (Mnangagwa) and VP (Chiwenga) to buy their audience, but both refused to entertain them and just told them to leave the fertilisers in Kwekwe.
They haven’t met them up to now. The company is struggling to pay for the fertiliser up to now.

Anyway Mutambudzi the chief director for presidential communications, on Saturday told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200007064/ed-chiwenga-bribe-backfires">The Standard</a> he could not comment on a matter that was under investigation. He said:

We would not want to interfere with the investigations. ZACC can respond to that.
</blockquote>
ZACC spokesperson Thandiwe Mlobane confirmed the developments and said the matter was being investigated under case number HCR26/01/23.
ZACC investigators reportedly entered IDC offices on 24 January and served the institution with a warrant of search and seizure.
Makamure and Tome are also accused of abusing power and nepotism.
Contacted for comment by The Standard, Tome said he was in a meeting. He had not responded by the time of going to print.
Makamure also did not respond to questions sent to him by the publication.

Attempt To "Bribe" Mnangagwa, Chiwenga Fails

Police officers have been warned against taking bribes from motorists at roadblocks as this results in road traffic accidents as unroadworthy vehicles are allowed on the roads.
Assistant commissioner Levi Sibanda warned that those found wanting will face the full wrath of the law. He said:

When we introspect we look at the statistics where our citizens lost their lives through accidents. It is indeed disturbing.
I am encouraging enforcement agencies not to accept bribes from motorists. And also to encourage our transporters not to bribe or not be part and parcel of this very bad and unnecessary arrangement within our society.
We expect your fleets to be roadworthy. You must not buy your presence on our roads through bribes.

He was speaking at the World Day or Road Traffic Victims commemorations held in Bulawayo this week.
23 people were reportedly arrested in July this year within a period of four hours for bribery at a roadblock along the Harare-Bulawayo highway.
According to official data, more than 1 500 people lost their lives through road accidents between January and September this year while 7 851 were injured countrywide.
Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister, Felix Mhona, called for cooperation among stakeholders to curb road traffic accidents. He said:

We, therefore, call for partnerships and collaborations with religious communities, organised labour, business, government institutions and civil society to mitigate the occurrences and ugly impacts of his scourge.
The carnage on our roads must stop. We can’t go on pretending day by day that someone, someday will come and make a change.
Road safety is our absolute responsibility. Surely, it can only be through us that we put an end to this.
This is a war we can win as roughly 94% of road traffic accidents are directly attributed to human error.
A change in human behaviour could therefore easily result in a lowering of the worrisome statistic.
All of us want to end this carnage. All of us must end this carnage. It is now or never.

Police Officers Warned Against Taking Bribes

Former Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) boss Henrietta Rushwaya has been declared not guilty of bribery allegations by a Harare magistrate.
The Zimbabwe Miners Federation (ZMF) president was accused of offering a US$5 000 bribe to an airport official in a bid to smuggle gold worth US$330 000.
The State alleged that Rushwaya attempted to bribe a Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) official Owen Sibanda to allow her to pass through the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport with gold.
Rushwaya had denied the allegations. She said she did not have any money on the day in question and that she never avoided the normal airport routines.
Harare magistrate Learnmore Mapiye ruled that the State’s case was too weak for a reasonable court to convict. He also upheld Rushwaya’s arguments. Said Mapiye:

The State witness did not support that the accused avoided the ordinary route.
It is also common cause that Owen Sibanda, the key witness, said that he was not offered any money but was going to be offered US$5 000.
Sibanda said that he took the issue of the bribe as a joke which the court was shocked about because the issue of the bribery is not a joke.
The State witness told the court that the accused was arrested for travelling with gold without proper documents but the evidence of the State witness, especially the first one, was not convincing.
The accused might have committed the offence but the State failed to prove beyond belief that she could have committed the offence.

Henrietta Rushwaya Acquitted... Magistrate Says State's Case Too Weak

A Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) officer, a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) officer, and a member of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) are in remand prison on charges of soliciting a bribe.
Munyaradzi Mupesa (32) of CIO Tsholotsho, Tyron Makati (31) of ZRP Victoria Falls and Trust Mirirayi (45) of the Mechanised Battalion in Darwendale were part of a crack team stationed at the Beitbridge border post for a joint operation against smuggling and border jumping when they committed the alleged offence.
The trio allegedly demanded a R6 500 bribe from a motorist travelling from South Africa through the Beitbridge border post on 7 April this year.
The suspects allegedly stopped Martin Severino who was driving a South African registered vehicle with a fake Temporary Import Permit and demanded a bribe.
After paying the bribe, Severino allegedly informed a relative who is also a councillor, Takavingei Mahachi.
Mahachi filed a complaint with the Beitbridge Customs and Excise Regional Manager Kenneth Mungati who reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of the security officers.
They appeared before Beitbridge Resident Magistrate Tafadzwa Gwazemba facing charges of criminal abuse of office.
The magistrate remanded the trio in custody to 5 May after Prosecutor Tinayeishe Matenga successfully opposed bail.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Deputy Minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kindness_Paradza">Kindness Paradza</a> has warned journalists against soliciting bribes.
Paradza was responding to Institute for Public Relations and Communication Zimbabwe (IPRCZ) Acting Executive Director, Proctor Nyemba, during the IPRCZ inaugural conference at Troutbeck Resort in Nyanga on Monday.
Nyemba had alleged that reporters were demanding bribes from public relations practitioners to cover up for stories that have a negative impact on their organisations. In response, Paradza said:

This is the reason why we are crafting the Zimbabwe Media Practitioners Bill so that we address issues related to ethics in the profession.

Do not pay them bribes. If possible set traps so that culprits can be exposed.
The situation has been worsened by freelancers around even though we know there are editors and reporters in the mainstream media who are also demanding bribes.

Paradza Warns Journalists Against Soliciting Bribes

ZANU PF on Tuesday refuted allegations by MDC-Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende that the ruling party attempted to bribe opposition leaders.
In a post on social media, Hwende claimed that that President Mnangagwa offered millions of dollars, cars, mines, farms among others to MDC-A leaders in a bid to destroy the opposition movement.
Hwende’s remarks came after Mnangagwa had handed over 19 Isuzu D-Max vehicles to Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) members last Friday.
ZANU PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo said Mnangagwa has no business sponsoring opposition leaders. He said:

In a statement on Monday Mr Charlton Hwende of MDC Alliance claimed that His Excellency President E.D Mnangagwa and First Secretary of ZANU PF had made attempts to pay millions of dollars to MDC Alliance officials in an effort to destroy the party. For some time, he has been quiet on the political scene but resurrected when President Mnangagwa had given out cars to Political Actors Dialogue leaders to use on development work.

The trial of Wicknell Chivayo and his company Intratrek Zimbabwe (Pvt) Limited, along with former Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) board chairperson Stanley Kazhanje kicked off on Friday at the Harare Magistrates Court.
Intratrek is alleged to have paid a US$10 000 bribe to Kazhanje in 2016, but both parties denied the charges.
Kazhanje has applied to have the charge against him dropped saying he has already been convicted of hiding the transaction.
He asserts the transaction was a straightforward business payment made in 2014 before he took the ZPC post, from his principle.
Chivayo and his company, represented by Advocate Lewis Uriri, denied ever transferring the US$10 000 to Kazhanje as a bribe.
Intratrek avers the payment to Kazhanje as payment for consultancy services rendered to his firm before Kazhanje joined the ZPC board.
Kazhanje, represented by Advocate Tawanda Nyamakura, denied the charges, saying he was once convicted on the same payment and applied that the charges be dismissed.
Brian Vito, appearing for the State, is expected to reply to Kazhanje’s application for dismissal of the charges.
Regional magistrate Ngoni Nduna presided.

Chivayo, Kazhanje Bribe Trial Commences

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA), has dismissed as fake as a WhatsApp screenshot circulating on social media alleging that Technical Director Wilson Mutekede accepted a bribe from a player who wants to play for the Warriors.
In the conversation in question, Mutekede is alleged to be speaking to a player giving him assurance that he has a place in the Warriors squad to face Algeria, with the player promising money in exchange.
ZIFA spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela said the chat was created by people who want to soil Mutekede’ reputation, saying this is not the first time ZIFA officials have been targeted. Said Gwesela:
<blockquote>As ZIFA we can confirm that we have seen the purported chat and we have spoken to Mtekede and we have also checked his text messages and, it appears, this is just another plot to try and smear his name.
As you are aware, a number of ZIFA officials have been targeted, in recent months, in such smear campaigns and there are some people out there whose mission is just to ensure that they denigrate the characters of the ZIFA officials.
It is possible to create a false chat, in this digital age, and this appears to be one of them because it’s not the first time we have seen Mtekede, and other ZIFA officials, being targeted.</blockquote>

ZIFA Clears Mutekede Of Bribery Allegations

A junior female police officer has filed a report of attempted rape against a senior male officer who she allegedly assaulted in Norton on Saturday.
The senior officer, Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo, based at Police General Headquarters, had tried to apprehend Constable Melody Tsikayi for receiving a bribe at a roadblock in Norton when the alleged assault and attempted rape took place.
A leaked memo indicated that Govo had to seek medical treatment for the injuries he sustained at the hands of his junior. The memo reads:
<blockquote>On May 29, 2020, at around 1700hrs and at 39km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road opposite Karina Service Station, Norton, Chief Superintendent Govo, who was in civilian clothes, was driving past a roadblock mounted by ZRP Norton Urban members led by Sergeant Masiya and four other members, including the accused.
He disembarked from his vehicle and walked towards the roadblock site. The accused then assaulted the complainant several times on the face and head. Sergeant Masiya went into the bush after he heard a shout for help and restrained the two who were manhandling each other, that is when he realised that the two were Constable Tsikayi and Chief Superintendent Govo.
The complainant (Govo) was then referred for medical examination. Investigations are in progress. Constable Tsikayi also made a report of attempted rape against Chief Superintendent Govo alleging that she had gone to the bush to relieve herself and was surprised when she was grabbed from behind and dragged to a secluded place where he attempted to rape her, Norton RRB 4419436 refers.</blockquote>

"Bribe-taking" Junior Cop Accuses Boss Of Attempted Rape

Former Eskom Chief Executive Officer, Matshela Koko, said he has failed to make progress on his 100-megawatt solar power plant because government officials are demanding bribes from him.
Koko’s company, Matshela Energy, was awarded a licence to generate electricity by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Energy_Regulatory_Authority" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA)</a> in July this year. Writing on microblogging site Twitter on Friday, Koko said:
<blockquote>Matshela Energy received a generation license in July 2019.
6 months later nothing has happened.
Our plan was to break ground in August 2019.
So many people have tried to extort money from me and I refused.
It is a shame.</blockquote>

Govt Officials Demand Bribes From Former Eskom CEO - REPORT

Memory Sibanda, the widow of Onward Machangara who was allegedly killed in cold blood by two police officers has filed a lawsuit against Police Commissioner-General, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Godwin_Matanga" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Godwin Matanga</a> and Home affairs minister, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Cain_Mathema" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Cain Mathema</a> for $540 000 in compensation.
In her founding affidavit, Sibanda said on March 4 her husband and colleague were stopped by armed police officers while driving a truckload of firewood in Southlea Park and ordered to lie on the ground. She explained:
<blockquote>The friend followed the order and lay down but Machangara refused. Instead, he asked his friend to stand up. The police officer threatened to shoot Machangara but still, he did not comply.
The police officer cocked his AK rifle and shot him on his upper back. The bullet pierced through his collar bone. He fell to the ground and died on the spot.</blockquote>
Sibanda filed the lawsuit at the High Court where she claims to have suffered trauma over her husband’s death and having to look after 6 children on her own.
The $540 000 is split as follows, $500 000 being damages for loss of support, $20 000 being damages for the nervous shock she suffered as a result of the traumatic circumstances of her husband’s death and $20 000 for funeral expenses.

Women pressure groups have warned that they will expose journalists and members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police allegedly working in cahoots with Prophetic Healing and Deliverance Ministries (PHD) founder and leader, Walter Magaya to cover up his misdeeds.
Gender Media Connect Director Abigail Gamanya told the media in Harare on Friday that some journalists and police officers are being bribed by Magaya to withhold information that will incriminate him. She said:
<blockquote>We appreciate the media for exposing the scandals that are alleged against Magaya, however, there are journalists and members of the police said to be bribed to withhold information and interfering to prevent the Man of God to be brought to book, we are going to name and shame them if necessary so that we progress with this case.
I was talking to one journalist outside and we were saying that until that happens to your daughter or mother then you will try to get him arrested but for now that it’s happening to someone’s daughter you can accept a bribe.
… We understand it’s just a reflection of the times in which we just have to do what has to be done to get money but we cannot tolerate that.</blockquote>

Women Pressure Group Says It Will Name And Shame Walter Magaya Protectors

Legislators have been accused of receiving top of the range vehicles as bribe from sugar manufacturer Tongaat Hulett so that they influence Government to issue the company with a land lease. Tongaat Hulett has no lease agreement with Government or any title to the 29 000 hectare sugar plantation after Government compulsorily acquired the land.
The issue came up during a tour of Tongaat Hulett by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Lands, Agriculture and Resettlement chaired by Zanu-PF Gokwe Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena who has vowed to investigate the matter. Said Wadyajena:
<blockquote>There is an issue of vehicles that has been raised during this meeting, Land Cruisers, and we have also been told about their registration numbers. We have to investigate through holding public hearings among others strategies. We are going to deliberate all what we have been told and do our investigations before tabling a report of our findings before Parliament. </blockquote>
However, Tongaat Hulett managing director, Mr Sydney Mutsambiwa, said he was unaware of the matter even when he was warned that he could be charged with contempt of Parliament if it turned out that he was misleading the committee by saying he did not know anything.

Harare businessman Lovemore Kurotwi has approached President Emmerson Mnangagwa in a bid to recover $17 million he says was seized by the State when he was forced out of the Chiadzwa diamond fields allegedly at the behest of former Mines minister Obert Mpofu whom he says had asked for a $10 million bribe.
In a letter to Mnangagwa dated January 4, Kurotwi said he lost $3,6 million cash which was in MMCZ’s (Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe) account, 1,4 million carats of diamonds and mining equipment worth $14 million which he had invested through his company called Canadile Miners. In by part of the letter which was seen by NewsDay, Kurotwi writes:
<blockquote>We were given this concession in partnership with Marange Resources, a government mining company under the auspices of ZMDC (Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation). In fact, ZMDC guaranteed the partnership. However, as is on record, former Minister of Mines Obert Mpofu asked me for a bribe of $10 million. Upon my refusal to give him this bribe, minister Mpofu caused my arrest on unfounded allegations of fraud. Again as is now public knowledge, I was acquitted by the courts of law for these trumped-up charges.</blockquote>
Mpofu has in the past denied allegations that he demanded a $10 million bribe from Kurotwi. NewsDay could not get in touch with him for a comment as his mobile phone went unanswered.

$10 Million "Bribe" Haunts Obert Mpofu As Businessman Approaches Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) spokesperson Douglas Mahiya has said that former Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) director general and Justice Minister Happyton Bonyongwe is bribing legislators in a bid to stop President Robert Mugabe’s impeachment process which is expected to start today. He said this while addressing Zimbabweans that are gathered at Africa Unity Square ahead of the impeachment proceedings.
Mahiya also claims that Esau Mupfumi is also trying to bribe members of Parliament in a bid to stop President Mugabe’s impeachment. Zanu-PF is expected to move a motion to impeach President Mugabe today. This comes after Zanu-PF’s Central Committee resolved to go ahead with the resolution to impeach Mugabe after he did not resign during his address on Sunday.

Inspector Takawira Sagireta, who is the officer-in-charge (board) at Police General Headquarters (PGHQ) in Harare was asked not to plead when he appeared before magistrate Josephine Sande on criminal abuse of office charges. He was granted him $100 bail and remanded the matter to September 1 to facilitate further investigations.
The court heard that sometime in September 2016, Sagireta approached Sergeant Sibongile Nyadundu, who is stationed at Mashonaland East ICT system administration, and told her that he could facilitate her transfer to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s national traffic section. He allegedly demanded a $125 bribe from Nyadundu. On September 28 2016, Nyadundu’s husband, Tapiwa Munamato, who is employed by the Zimbabwe National Army, made a mobile money transfer of $75 into Sagireta’s CABS Bank account before he made another transfer of $50 into Sagireta’s mobile wallet the next day to bring the total to $125.
Nyadundu’s husband filed a report at the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) in May this year after Sarigeta failed to facilitate the transfer. On June 2, Zacc referred the matter to PGHQ for further investigations and later referred it to the Criminal Investigation Department’s Commercial Crimes Division, leading to Sagireta’s arrest.
