Bulawayo’s water crisis may not ease in the short term because many of the boreholes being drilled by the government in and around the city are yielding no water.
Speaking to the <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200026612/byo-water-crisis-set-to-worsen">Southern Eye</a>, Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution secretary Paul Nyoni said the water table in the city has gone down and as a result, they have failed to reach their target for boreholes. Said Nyoni:
<blockquote>
We have sunk boreholes in the city using the drilling rig from the government, but the main problem is that there is a high percentage of dry holes.
At most times, we will have a target to sink several boreholes, but because of the water table, we do not sink the desired number.

The Bulawayo metropolitan province received one drilling rig from the central government in 2023 to help ease the city’s water crisis which has seen the council cutting off water supplies for about 120 hours a week.
Nyoni revealed that besides a receding water table attributed to El Niño-induced drought, authorities are also facing the challenge of vandalism. He said:
<blockquote>
We have been drilling boreholes mainly in institutions or if I can say parastatals that have enough security.
We have not been drilling in open spaces because there is a lot of vandalism going on hence the reason why many communities have not been noticing so much of our work.
</blockquote>
Nyoni said the provincial leadership was expecting the central government to provide another drilling rig to ensure that residents of the country’s second-largest city have access to the precious liquid.

Bulawayo Water Crisis May Worsen As New Boreholes Fail To Yield Water

The Upper Manyame Sub-Catchment Council (UMSCC) says it has detected Escherichia coli (E.coli) in boreholes that were tested in 14 residential areas of Harare.
E.coli is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains of E. coli are harmless, some can cause illness, ranging from mild gastrointestinal issues to severe infections.
In a statement, UMSCC said tests on water extracted from boreholes in Mt. Pleasant, Avondale, and Greendale to cholera-prone Budiriro, Hopley, Mbare, Glen View and Waterfalls, Eyecourt, Chitungwiza, Eastlea, Norton, and Lyton industry areas confirmed the presence of E.coli. It said:
<blockquote>
The water quality testing which was conducted by UMSCC revealed the presence of E.coli bacteria in boreholes located in the following areas: Mt. Pleasant, Budiriro, Avondale, Waterfalls, Glen View, Eyecourt, Lyton industry, Chitungwiza, Greendale, Hopley, Eastlea, Norton and Mbare.
E.coli bacteria can cause various illnesses, including cholera, which poses a significant health risk. The presence of E.coli indicates potential contamination of the water supply in these areas.
The households and institutions who had their water tested have been informed of the results. (They should) not drink, cook, or wash with untreated water from boreholes or other sources in the listed areas.

The development is quite alarming as hundreds of thousands of Harare residents use water from boreholes considering that the Harare City Council is struggling to pump treated water to residents.
The results, revealed on Monday, come at a time when cholera has spread to almost every corner of the country.
According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care, as of 26 February 2024, Zimbabwe had 26 189 suspected Cholera cases, 2 702 confirmed cases, 25 448 recoveries, 71 confirmed deaths and 485 suspected deaths.

Deadly Bacteria Found In Boreholes In Harare

Local authorities in Ward 31 in Munyathi, Kwekwe, had to disconnect a community borehole after unknown people allegedly threw cyanide and contaminated its water.
Ward 31 Councilor Tichafa Chitate told the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/community-borehole-laced-with-cyanide/">Chronicle</a> that two donkeys died instantly after consuming the contaminated water prompting the owner to raise alarm. He said:
<blockquote>
The man was making his donkeys drink water at the water source as it is used by both villagers and their livestock.
Luckily the owner did not drink the water himself but made the donkeys drink and they collapsed and died instantly.
That is when he raised alarm and we decided to disconnect the borehole as a precaution until we ascertain what happened.
The villagers are now facing acute water challenges as the next borehole is far from them. The situation is even worse for livestock.
But we are working with relevant authorities so that the situation be addressed as soon as possible.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Kwekwe District Officer, Daniel Magombedze said the samples tested positive for cyanide. Said Magombedze:
I can confirm that we rushed to Munyathi where we collected samples for testing and they indeed tested positive for poisoning.
We also advised the community to stop using the borehole until a solution is found.

Villagers in Ward 20, Ezinyangeni, Nkayi South, Matabeleland North Province, are walking long distances to find drinking water.
The villagers are appealing to the Government and donors for more boreholes as the existing ones are malfunctioning.
Their plight has been compounded y the siltation of available dams and rivers.
In a recent interview with CITE, Sithenjisiwe Sibanda said the available boreholes run dry leaving them stranded. She said:
<blockquote>
The few available boreholes run out of water and we spend hours waiting for the water levels to rise.
The dams in our area have silted and this has caused problems for our livestock which continue to die due to lack of water.
</blockquote>
Contacted from a comment by CITE, Nkayi South legislator, Stars Mathe confirmed what the villagers were saying. She said:
<blockquote>
It is true that villagers are experiencing water challenges and the siltation in rivers, the water is at the lowest levels.
</blockquote>
She however said there are programmes of drilling boreholes countrywide and Nkayi could get more boreholes.
The Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water, Climate, and Rural Resettlement this year revealed that both Matabeleland North and Matabeleland South have the least number of boreholes compared to other provinces.

Nkayi Villagers Grapple With Water Challenges

The government, through the District Development Fund (DDF), intends to sink 20 boreholes while resuscitating some that are no longer functional in the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Midlands_Province" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Midlands province</a>.
This was revealed by the District Development Coordinator for Midlands, Molly Shonhiwa. She said:
<blockquote>It is our responsibility as a department to provide water facilities in the communal areas. For that reason, we are targeting to sink about 20 boreholes across the provinces in 2019.</blockquote>
Shonhiwa expressed concern over the falling water table due to the scourge of climate change, a situation that have limited access to water by Midlanders.
She pledged to provide water for all the communities and livestock in the province while at the same time she urged communities to avoid stream bank cultivation as it results in siltation of water bodies.

Midlands To Have More Boreholes

The District Development Fund (DDF) has been allocated $1 million for 15 boreholes to be sunk in Glen View suburb in Harare.
The high-density suburb has experienced repeated cholera outbreaks due to shortages of clean drinking water.
Speaking at a drilling site in Glen View 1 on Friday, acting permanent secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet Wilfred Kachitsa said:
<blockquote>The reason we are here is to avert the possibility of water-borne diseases. We are here to drill 15 boreholes throughout Glen View constituency which could alleviate the likelihood of water-borne diseases because of the water shortages that have been announced in this particular area.
There is a budgetary allocation of $1 million that has been availed by Government through Treasury to address the crisis that is looming within the area.</blockquote>
Speaking at the same occasion, DDF director (water supplies and maintenance) Edwin Toriro revealed that the department has done more than 100 boreholes in Harare. He said:
<blockquote>We are going to set up seven boreholes in Glen View 1 and 8 in Glen View 7. So far we have drilled two boreholes out of the targeted 15. We hope by Monday next week; we should complete at least five.</blockquote>
A by-election is set to be held in Glen View South constituency in September this year after the seat fell vacant following the death of Susan Tsvangirayi Java (MDC Alliance) who was the sitting MP.

15 Boreholes Earmarked For Glen View Suburb

Acting Harare City Council town clerk Josephine Ncube said that council water is safer than borehole water and that residents should stop drinking borehole water.
Said Ncube:
<blockquote>We assure residents that our water is safe. Residents should desist from going to boreholes because some of them have contaminated water. We had to decommission some boreholes, especially at Matapi flats. We have about $8 million in our budget for pipe replacement next year. This year work has started and is progressing well. We start in areas that are really bad and we need to replace three-quarters. We expect the pace to increase next year.</blockquote>

"Stop drinking borehole water": Harare City Council tells residents

Briefing Minister of Health, Dr <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/David_Parirenyatwa">David Parirenyatwa</a>, and Minister of Local Government <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Saviour_Kasukuwere">Saviour Kasukuwere</a> during a tour of Mbare to assess the extent of the typhoid outbreak, <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_Council">Harare City Council</a> health director Dr Prosper Chonzi said almost half of Mbare and Sunningdale boreholes in Harare have contaminated water that is not fit for human consumption and they are consuming this water due to erratic water supplies.
Said Chonzi:
<blockquote>Thirteen out of 32 boreholes in the Mbare-Sunningdale area are contaminated but residents consume this water because of the erratic water supplies leading to the spread of the typhoid bacteria. People in Mbare have resorted to using the bush for toilet purposes due to no, or limited supply of water. This however, has resulted in the rain washing away the faeces to the boreholes.</blockquote>
He said new boreholes should be properly constructed to avoid contamination.

Harare City Council says 13 out of 32 boreholes in Mbare & Sunningdale have contaminated water

Harare could be facing a typhoid out break after a 13-year old girl from <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Mbare">Mbare</a> died from what is suspected to be the disease.  9 people have also been hospitalized while, 30 people have been treated. The city has recorded 139 cases of typhoid in the last 2 years.  The outbreak of the disease in Mbare is being blamed on a borehole, which is not properly secured.  There are fears that sewage and runoff water could have seeped into the borehole water.
City of Harare spokesperson Michael Chideme said:
<blockquote>We are still investigating to confirm whether the death was a result of typhoid. The girl was initially admitted at Harare Hospital and was transferred to the Beatrice Infectious Diseases Hospital (Nazareth) on Saturday. She died on admission,
<div class="leaderboard-advert"> Her siblings were also sick with similar symptoms. Her brother was admitted at the hospital. On further investigations, about 30 people on 8th and 9th Street in Mbare were then treated for suspected typhoid.</div>
