Former MDC Central Kwekwe MP, Blessing Chebundo, has been lauded by ZANU PF for reportedly bringing new members to the ruling party from the opposition.
Addressing ZANU PF affiliates in Midlands Province recently, ZANU PF political commissar Mike Bimha commended Chebundo for a job well done. Bimha said:

I am impressed with what Cde Chebundo is doing he is massively recruiting from those who are in opposition.
Cde Chebundo is more likely to gain an audience from opposition members more than me.
We are seeing a lot of opposition members joining us due to Cde Chebundo’s efforts.

<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/https-www-newzimbabwe-com-chebundo-lauded-for-bringing-opposition-members-to-zanu-pf/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> reported that Chebundo became famous at the turn of the millennium after he beat ZANU PF Kwekwe Central candidate Emmerson Mnangagwa in successive polls.
After the defeats, Mnangagwa retreated from Kwekwe and contested the rural Chirumhanzu-Zibagwe Constituency where he was elected MP.
Chebundo, however, left the opposition in February 2021 and joined ZANU PF after he was beaten in the then MDC Alliance party primary elections by Judith Tobaiwa.

ZANU PF Praises Former Kwekwe MDC MP Blessing Chebundo

Former MDC-T legislator Blessing Chebundo has reportedly lost respect among President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s supporters in Kwekwe after the ZANU PF candidates for Kwekwe Central (John Mapurazi) and Mbizo (Vongai Mupereri) were defeated by CCC candidates in the 26 March by-elections.
Chebundo had promised Mnangagwa that he will use his vast influence in former MDC structures to deliver the two urban seats to ZANU PF.
ZANU PF lost to Settlement Chikwinya (Mbizo) and Judith Tobaiwa (Kwekwe Central) despite Chebundo’s promises to the ruling party. Speaking in an interview before the by-elections, Chebundo said:

Over 1 000 people defected from the opposition to join ZANU PF in Kwekwe. It is because these people had seen that ZANU PF is the only party that is going to take us to Canaan.
There is no way the opposition is going to win Mbizo and Kwekwe, I declare that I am taking Kwekwe Central to its rightful owners, which is ZANU PF.
I have no doubt that ZANU PF has what it takes and has a chance to win both Kwekwe Central and Mbizo.
I am going to work and make sure that we achieve what we target, to have those two seats going back to ZANU PF.
It’s the confidence that is making me say that and also looking at the kind of individuals fielded by the opposition and when I assess them l don’t see that they have the stamina to defeat ZANU PF.

Mbizo MP Settlement Chikwinya (CCC) said Chebundo has no influence within the opposition party.
He said Chebundo is seeking protection from ZANU PF officials after he broke the law.

Chebundo's Ambitious Promises To ZANU PF Collapse

Political commentators have said ZANU PF will not benefit from parading former MDC officials as the defectors have been rejected by the opposition party and as such are of no value to the ruling party.
ZANU PF has been parading MDC defectors at its campaign rallies, using them as “political trophies” and urging opposition supporters to also join the ruling party.
MDC senior officials who defected to ZANU PF in recent years include Obert Gutu, a former MDC national spokesperson, Tracy Mutinhiri, Tongai Matutu, Blessing Chebundo and Lilian Timveous, among others.
Political commentator Davidson Mugodzwa opined that ZANU PF is using the same old tricks that will not work as the defectors are spent forces. Said Mugodzwa:

ZANU PF is using old tricks, members relegated from formerly MDC now resurfacing at campaign trails will not work any wonders for ZANU PF.
These recycled politicians like Tracy Mutinhiri, Tongai Matutu have already been rejected in their own political backyards, suddenly they cannot be expected to achieve miracles in ZANU PF.
These same politicians are really a spent force now masquerading as revolutionaries. No one will be hoodwinked to vote for them whatever colour they now cling to.

Another political analyst Wellington Gadzikwa agreed with Mugodzwa and said the defectors have no political capital as individuals. He said:

I doubt if it works because these defectors have no traction. They are mainly speaking to the already converted unless there are some ZANU PF supporters who may be feared that they will join the opposition.
These defectors were only relevant within the brand of the opposition as Zimbabwean politics is party based rather than issue based.

'MDC Defectors Irrelevant, Add No Value To ZANU PF'

Former MDC legislator Blessing Chebundo who recently joined Zanu PF said the newly-recruited ruling party members should be given mines and farms.
Chebundo made the remarks while speaking at a recent Zanu PF meeting held at the party’s Kwekwe district offices. He said:
<blockquote>During the days when we were in the opposition when we wanted to mine or farm we would not be given access as we were told we belonged to the opposition.
The people who have joined the party from the opposition are now part of the ruling party and they also need opportunities that the people in Zanu PF are already enjoying.
The people who have joined the party must not be treated like outcasts since they are now part of Zanu PF.
They also want to be given mining and farming opportunities just like the people who are already in the party.</blockquote>
Chebundo also sought to assure his new comrades in Zanu PF that he did not join the party for any position or to become an MP but to add his efforts to national development.

MDC Defectors Demand Farms, Mines From Zanu PF

Exiled Political Science professor Jonathan Moyo has said five of the former MDC officials who have joined the ruling Zanu PF party are President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s clansmen.
Moyo alleges that all five were lured to the ruling party by the Central Intelligence Organisation ( CIO) and the significance of the defections is that they highlight “Mnangagwa’s illegal and dirty clansmanship at State House”. Moyo tweeted:

In another development, the MDC Alliance has castigated the Mnangagwa-led government as a dictatorial regime following the recall from Parliament of Harare East legislator Tendai Biti. A post on the party’s social media pages read:
<blockquote>Mnangagwa’s anti-people, the dictatorial regime has unlawfully recalled VP #BitiTendai from Parliament to thwart his anti-corruption drive in the Public Accounts Committee. He was due to table the ZINARA &amp; Command Agriculture Reports &amp; was leading the ZESA &amp; Land Baron Inquiries.
The latest bout of unlawful recalls also affects Hon. #SettlementChikwinya, Hon. #Phulu, Hon. #Madzimure , Hon #Tsunga &amp; Hon. #Mahlangu.

On Wednesday the speaker of parliament officially announced a notice from the PDP secretary-general Benjamin Rukanda that Biti, William Madzimure (Kambuzuma), Settlement Chikwinya (Mbizo), Mahlangu Sichelesile (Pumula), Regai Tsunga (Mutasa South Constituency), and Phulu Kucaca, cease to be their members, hence they cannot be parliamentarians for the party.

'MDC Defectors Are Mnangagwa's Clansmen', Says Jonathan Moyo

Former MDC T official Blessing Chebundo who defected to the ruling party last month has said he is honoured to be welsomced back into the ruling party, The Chronicle reports.
Chebudo said this at a Midlands provincial leadership during the Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting in Gweru hwere he was being introduced to other party members.
Chebundo addressed the PPC meeting and said he had been a member of Zanu PF since 1980 and the MDC was formed in his house but after 21 years in the wilderness he is happy to be home:
<blockquote>The good part is that all Politburo members here, I know them, they are friends, they are relatives. I know them as Midlanders like me.
What a privilege, what an honour, I feel highly honored to be a member of Zanu-PF and I will bring experience and supporters so that we win elections as Zanu-PF under the astute leadership of President Mnangagwa
Today should be written down as history. I am happy to be home. I was born in Shurugwi and spent my life in the Midlands which is home to President Mnangagwa. In 1980 I was a Zanu-PF member. I was in the district structures and later joined the trade unions. When we formed MDC-T, the venue was my house and this means after 21 years in the wilderness, I am bringing wealth of experience, I am bringing my followers. My movement will help the party.</blockquote>
Chebundo said he was not interested in any positions he just wanted the put to put their heads together and work towards the greater good:
<blockquote>I have said this before, I am not here for any position, it’s not about positions, It’s about getting our heads together. I will be very disappointed if the things that made us leave MDC- T also happen in Zanu-PF. The biggest enemy is having factions in the party and failure to respect offices. If we fail to do that we are finished.</blockquote>

Blessing Chebundo Honoured To Be Back AT Zanu PF

Social media personality, Killer Zivhu says the recent high profile defections from the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa do not signify the party’s demise.
Zivhu, a former Zanu PF MP (Chivi South), said those officials dumping the MDC-A for Zanu PF are past their sell-by date and their departure will not negatively impact the party’s performance at the polls. Zivhu posted on Twitter:

Zivhu’s comments come after losing MDC-A vice presidential candidate Lilian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo, who lost the Kwekwe Central Constituency primaries to a young female activist, joined ZANU PF last month.
Timveos lost to Lynette Kore, Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube for the MDC-A vice presidency at the 2019 congress held in Gweru while Chebundo defected to the MDC-T before joining ZANU PF.
In another tweet, Zivhu chided opposition activists for calling for members of the public to boycott Dendairy products saying those are childish antics. Said Zivhu:

Dendairy, a dairy company owned by Neville Coetzee who has links with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has made headlines after Government granted it communal lands inhabited by the Shangaan tribe in Chilonga, Chiredzi District for its cow grass project.

Former MDC legislators Lilian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo who recently defected to ZANU PF are set to undergo ideological reorientation at the Chitepo School of Ideology.
Addressing the 349th ordinary session of the Politburo at the party’s headquarters in Harare on Wednesday, ZANU PF First Secretary and President Emmerson Mnangagwa said people from the opposition who join the ruling party need to be nurtured in line with the party’s ideology. He said:
<blockquote>Politburo will recall that in our previous meeting, I noted that our party policies, programmes and activities are attracting more members.
Last week saw senior MDC officials and former legislators Lillian Timveous and Blessing Chebundo abandoning the opposition to join Zanu PF.
Other personalities from opposition formations in various parts of the country are also seeing the light and opting to join our winning team.
We are indeed a party with a rich revolutionary history, a party with plans for the present times and a party with a vision for the future. Party structures should embrace these comrades who have come back home.
The Chitepo School of Ideology must move with speed to re-orient and nurture these new cadres in line with the ideology of our party and the national development paradigm, which is underway.</blockquote>
Timveos and Chebundo recently abandoned their parties, MDC-A and MDC-T respectively, alleging political bickering and a lack of direction.
They were paraded at State House by President Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga as well as ZANU PF national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri.

Timveos, Chebundo Set For Chitepo School Of Ideology

When MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai died in 2018, a mass exodus of senior officials became inevitable, a political commentator has said.
Stephen Chan, a professor of World Politics at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies told the Daily News that the only surprise was that the high profile defections are only taking place now. He said:
<blockquote>In a way, it’s only surprising that defections of this sort haven’t happened earlier.
As the opposition feuds within itself, and as Zanu PF conducts behind-the-scenes defection diplomacy, it is likely more will defect in the future.
There is prestige and funding available in politics. In opposition politics, however, foreign funders are increasingly disillusioned by the unending bitterness that the splits have engendered.</blockquote>
Chan’s remarks come after MDC-A top official Lilian Timveos and Blessing Chebundo joined ZANU PF a few weeks after leaving the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance for the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora, respectively.
Chebundo and Timveos were on Wednesday welcomed by ZANU PF First Secretary and President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House.
Chan further argued that even though Chamisa may be Mnangagwa’s biggest challenger in the presidential race, both MDCs will lose more ground in the legislature. Said Chan:

MDCs May Lose More Top Officials To ZANU PF - Chan

Respected political scientist, Eldred Masunungure believes the defections to ZANU PF by MDC-A and MDC-T officials, Lilian Timveous and Blessing Chebundo, respectively will help President Emmerson Mnangagwa consolidate power in his home province, Midlands.
Masunungure, a University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer, said that Chebundo is not a political novice as he is a founding member of the MDC and has previously defeated Mnangagwa in the 2000 and 2005 parliamentary elections in Kwekwe Central.
More high-profile defections from the MDC-A are possible and the party’s president, Nelson Chamisa need to come up with a strategy to counter that. Said Masunungure:
<blockquote>In Chebundo, we are talking about someone with real political capital, having previously defeated Mnangagwa in the 2000 and 2005 parliamentary elections.
So, it is a momentous development that will help the incumbent to consolidate his power base in the Midlands.
It is normal that leaders would want to build their power bases from their home provinces before spreading their tentacles elsewhere.
Mnangagwa wants to be seen as having united the people from his home area to rally behind him after getting the likes of Timveous to his side. It will work wonders for him.</blockquote>
Some political commentators have, however, downplayed Timveos and Chebundo’s defections, saying the two are spent forces and sore losers after the former failed to clinch the vice presidency at the 2019 Congress while the latter lost heavily to a young female party activist in the Kwekwe Central primaries.

Thousands of ZANU PF supporters have left the party to join the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa since the 2017 military coup that ousted the late former president Robert Mugabe.
According to Chamisa’s friend and lawyer, Advocate Thabani Mpofu, unlike President Emmerson Mnangagwa who parades MDC-A officials who defect to ZANU PF, Chamisa does not indulge in such “petty” antics when the opposition party welcomes new members from the ruling party. <a href="https://twitter.com/adv_fulcrum/status/1365954383918284800" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Mpofu posted on Twitter:</a>

We are a natural target since our President won the 2018 election whose victory the regime stole from us.
While it is not in the ordinary for me to respond to ZANU Pf allegations on our internal issues, I would like to address some of the concerns considering that they are intended to damage both my personal integrity and most importantly the repute of the party. First. allegations were levelled that party funds have been misappropriated. In addition to our audit (of the party finances in the period after 2019 congress) which was successful I must state that we have tried and tested systems of deploying financial resources in the organisation which leave no room for misappropriation by any single individual. While human beings are fallible, systems are fail-safe. I take pride in the systems we have put in place which cannot be manipulated in the manner suggested.
Second, the allegation that I have tormented people in meetings to the point of tears and even drove a few to the absurd, deplorable and treacherouS act of joining ZANU P.F. is laughable. Constitutional meetings of organs of the party have continued uninterrupted since congress in the physical and virtually in instances where we are unable to meet physically due to lockdown restrictions. The organ that was singled out by ZANU PF speaking through the renegades, the Standing Committee, is chaired by the party President. In all our Standing Committee meetings, our President has ensured that meeting etiquette is observed in line with our democratic principles of tolerance, diversity of thought and freedom of speech. Should it be the case that a member feels they have been treated unfairly by another, the party has competent mechanisms to address grievances as a way of ensuring that our platforms remain safe spaces. I state here that if any member feels aggrieved by my conduct, I am personally available and willing to subject myself before organs of the party to answer to such allegations. I presented myself before congress in Gweru and had I not been elected, I was ready and willing to work with the one elected; such is my faith and confidence in the competency of our internal democracy. In the same spirit, I am open to criticism and correction. Be this as it may, I know that the current spurt of attacks is orchestrated by ZANU PF to put a wedge between the SG and the office of the president. These efforts will continue to fail dismally as I am not mistaken in the execution of my mandate to serve the institution and to give unquestionable support to our President Adv Nelson Chamisa.
For the record those who have left the MDC Alliance have done so voluntarily without any undue pressure from any quarter. No one was pushed out of the MDC Alliance.
It must astonish any right thinking citizen that those who claim to be running away from being insulted in private in the MDC Alliance are joining ZANU PF, a party which has not only insulted them publicly in the past but has maimed and killed thousands of MDC Alliance supporters. That kind of duplicity and treachery is shocking. We all know that those who have left the MDC Alliance and joined ZANU PF have done so to benefit from ZANU PF patronage and corruption. Others have done so after failing to recover from their loss in the popularity contest during our elective congress in 2019. We will work better to give the necessary psychological support to sore “losers” as well as ideological orientation to members that in a democratic organisation like the MDC Alliance we are all winners when the best is deployed and congress must never be the basis of terminal acrimony.
Those who have decided to join the gravy train are free to do so but they should never justify their treacherous behaviour by peddling falsehoods and mudslinging those who have chosen to keep fighting and speaking for the people. Despite the odds, the people’s movement has persevered with the unwavering support of the jobless graduate, the starving pensioner, the vending mother in the dusty streets of Harare right to the support of the farmer in the last but in Umguza. I personally will never betray the people’s cause. We are up against a ruthless enemy but we will prevail. The final call is unchanged. The journey is like a pendulum swing; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left but the final call remains unchanged, victory is certain.

Hwende Responds To Remarks By MDC-A Members Joining ZANU PF

Outspoken Norton Legislator, Temba Mliswa, said politicians who are crossing the floor to join ZANU PF are joining a shell of the former liberation party.
Mliswa’s remarks came after former MDC Alliance top official Lilian Timveos and former MDC-T Member of Parliament Blessing Chebundo were yesterday welcomed by ZANU PF First Secretary and President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House. <a href="https://twitter.com/TembaMliswa/status/1364787570710896641">Mliswa wrote on Twitter:</a>

Chebundo and Timveos defected to the ruling Zanu PF party citing a lack of direction and violent tendencies by Nelson Chamisa’s political outfit.
Meanwhile, MDC Alliance national spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said citizens have a democratic right to cross party floors but her party will not abandon the people. <a href="https://twitter.com/advocatemahere/status/1364939624708268033" rel="noopener" target="_blank">She wrote on Twitter</a>:

'Which ZANU-PF Are They Joining?' - Mliswa Speaks On MDC Defections

Two former MDC Alliance (MDC-A) top officials Lilian Timveous and Blessing Chebundo, both from the Midlands Province, have crossed the floor to join the ruling ZANU PF party.
The two met President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House this Wednesday, Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has confirmed.
The two were accompanied to State House by ZANU PF Midlands provincial chairman Mackenzie Ncube, and Minister of State for Midlands Province, Larry Mavima. <a href="https://twitter.com/Jamwanda2/status/1364539971877666816" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Charamba said in a Twitter post:</a>

Cde Blessing Chebundo had since left MDC-A to join MDC-T now led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora.

Chebundo famously defeated Mnangagwa, who was then an aspiring MP, in the 2000 and 2005 general elections, winning the Kwekwe Central seat despite threats to his life.
Timveous contested for the MDC Alliance vice presidency at the party’s congress held in Gweru in 2019 but lost to Tendai Biti, Lynette Kore and Welshman Ncube.

Two Former MDC-A Bigwigs Join ZANU PF

<blockquote>GUKURAHUNDI REBURIAL PROCESS MUST ADDRESS HISTORICAL INJUSTICES
We note with concern plans by the State to fast-track exhumations and reburials of Gukurahundi victims before there has been any accountability for the massacres and without the consultative participation of all stakeholders, particularly survivors and victims.
Over 20 000 people were killed during Gukurahundi in Matabeleland and the Midlands between 1983 and 1987. Most of the victims were buried in shallow graves.
However, over three decades later, there has been no formal acknowledgement or apology from the State for the commission of this genocide and the grave atrocities that took place.
The perpetrators have never been brought to book. The proposed reburials constitute the first indirect, official acknowledgement of the atrocities.
While the reburial of the victims is important, the surviving relatives and other key stakeholders must be heard and consulted on how the process should be carried out.
The communities that were affected must play a central role in the reburials through their traditional leaders and churches.
Truth-telling and justice must accompany any redress for survivors. The evidence associated with the atrocities must be carefully managed.
This is the only way we can ensure that there is full closure on this important national issue.
We call for a transparent, comprehensive, inclusive, gender-sensitive and consultative transitional justice process for the victims and survivors of Gukurahundi.
The process should be victim-centred and must involve representatives of all stakeholders including the traditional leaders, the surviving victims, rights-based groups, the Church and civic society. Reburials must be a part of this comprehensive process, not a standalone initiative.
The MDC Alliance stands for restorative justice, rehabilitative justice and, in appropriate cases, restitutive justice.
Reburying the victims without healing, justice, truth-telling and reparations will undoubtedly result in the wounds resurfacing in the future to the detriment of nation-building, lasting peace and reconciliation.

Blessing Chebundo the MDC politician who defeated President Emmerson Mnangagwa twice in the Kwekwe parliamentary elections has said that Mnangagwa is not as shrewd as many people think. After defeating Mnangagwa in 2000 and in 2005, Chebundo claims that he has the recipe for making “crocodile meat.” Speaking to New Zimbabwe, Chebundo said,
<blockquote>I equated this to a soccer match where you play the opponent at home and away. I felled him both home and away, proving to my detractors that Mnangagwa is actually someone who is easy to beat in an election…I used to tell our late President Tsvangirai that if Mnangagwa happens to be your opponent in an election, just come to me; I have the recipe to beat him. In as much as he is called Crocodile, I actually have the recipe to prepare crocodile meat…He is not as crafty or as shrewd a politician that people think he is.</blockquote>
