This kind of behaviour is not only dangerous but also poses a threat to our nation’s stability and economic progress.

Chamisa: Blessed Mhlanga’s Arrest A Blow To Human Rights And Press Freedom

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior journalist Blessed “Dhara” Mhlanga was remanded in custody on Tuesday by Harare Magistrate Farai Gwatima, pending a ruling on his bail application, which is scheduled for Thursday, reports <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/journalist-blessed-mhlanga-remanded-in-custody/">ZimLive</a>.
Mhlanga was arrested on Monday and charged with inciting violence through the broadcast of an interview with war veteran and ZANU PF Central Committee member, Blessed Geza, on the publication’s broadcast unit HStv.
Geza, who is currently in hiding, has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of corruption, cronyism, nepotism, ineptitude, and poor leadership, while also calling for his resignation.
During Mhlanga’s court appearance, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) opposed his bail application, arguing that he might interfere with police investigations.
Prosecutor Ruvimbo Matyatya submitted that as a senior figure at HStv, Mhlanga could potentially intimidate his subordinates, who are expected to be called as witnesses in the case. Matyatya argued:

There is a likelihood that he will commit similar offences. The same machinery which he used in the present case before the court is yet to be recovered by the police and procedures to recover same have commenced.

I am pained that I am standing in court defending a journalist’s right to freedom of expression.
The last point is that accused did not do this once but twice, yes he didn’t do it twice but many times. It’s his job.
Whether you agree with what Geza said, the public is entitled to hear it. It’s not my client who put these statements to the public.
I pray that the court makes a finding that on the law the state has failed to find compelling reasons to detain my client.

Journalist Blessed Mhlanga Remanded In Custody Over Geza Interview

The Zimbabwe National Editor’s Forum (ZINEF) is deeply disturbed and concerned by the arrest of Alpha Media Holdings’ online broadcasting platform HStv presenter Blessed Mhlanga by police earlier [on 24 February 2024] after his recent interviews with one of the war veterans leaders Blessed Geza and others.
Police had earlier said that they had been looking for Mhlanga for questioning in connection with claimed violations of Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23; for allegedly transmitting data messages that incite violence.
The two charges emanate from statements, which were allegedly uttered by Geza, a former liberation war veteran, and a Zanu PF political party central committee member during interviews on 27 January 2025 and on 11 February 2025.
Mhlanga was interrogated by police today, 24 February 2025, about the broadcaster’s operations and press conferences addressed by Geza.
Mhlanga, who is represented by Harare lawyer Chris Mhike, has been detained overnight at Harare Central Police Station and is expected to appear in court tomorrow. Mhike confirmed Mhlanga has been detained in police cells overnight and will appear in court tomorrow.
Geza is now wanted by police who have since pressed four criminal charges against him, including undermining the authority of and insulting the President.
In the same vein, Geza’s wife Roseline Tawengwa was also picked by police over her husband’s whereabouts which remain unknown.
In this context, ZINEF strongly condemns the unwarranted arrest and harassment of Mhlanga who was simply doing his job as a journalist by interviewing war veterans in the public interest. The interviews constituted legitimate journalism practice and media business.
Mhlanga’s arrest – which has a chilling effect on journalists’ professional work – is a clear attack on press freedom and constitutionally guaranteed rights, particularly freedom of expression.
We demand the immediate release of Mhlanga and call on authorities to ensure he is not harassed, harmed or tortured while in police custody.
It is always disturbing and unacceptable to us when journalists get arrested for merely doing their job. As the now clichéd yet apt refrain goes – journalism is not a crime.
ZINEF also calls on the government to respect constitutional rights of journalists, especially media freedom enshrined in section 61 of the constitution, which protects the right to freedom of expression, including freedom to seek, receive, and communicate information, as well as freedom of the media, allowing journalists to protect their sources and enabling establishment of broadcast and electronic media subject to state licensing procedures that are independent of government influence; essentially guaranteeing the right to a free press with limitations only for necessary reasons like public safety or protecting individual reputations.
While we appreciate that freedom of expression does not include promoting violence, hate speech, or damaging people’s reputations, we are clear that Mhlanga’s interviews fall within the ambit of media freedom and freedom of expression, as read with the Bill of Rights in Chapter 4 of the constitution and other sections that protect civil and political liberties of citizens; that is freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, freedom of movement, and the right to a fair hearing.
Besides, we urge government to create a safe and conducive working environment for journalists to operate without fear of harassment or intimidation.
We stand in firm solidarity with Mhlanga, his family and colleagues, and we will continue to advocate for the protection of journalists’ rights and the promotion of press freedom and other democratic rights in Zimbabwe.

Last week, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi appealed to the public for help in locating Mhlanga, who was wanted for violating a section of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Mhlanga said on Friday he could not report to the police due to illness.
On Monday, the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) confirmed that Mhlanga had been arrested and charged with two counts of violating Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act for allegedly transmitting data messages that incite violence. Said ZLHR:

Blessed Mhlanga, a reporter, was arrested for interviewing Blessed Geza, a political party member. The police accused Mhlanga of sharing messages that cause violence. He was supposed to go to the police last week but said he was sick. His lawyers said he will stay in jail overnight and go to court the next day. Blessed Mhlanga Arrested For Interviewing Blessed Geza

Plainclothes police officers visited Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) CEO Kenias Mafudzike at his home on Friday morning.
AMH is an independent media house in Zimbabwe. They publish several newspapers, including The Zimbabwe Independent, The Standard, NewsDay, and Southern Eye, and also operate Heart and Soul TV (HSTV).
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200038628/update-2-police-summon-amh-ceo-after-launching-manhunt-against-journalist-blessed-mhlanga">NewsDay</a>, the officers arrived at Mafudzike’s residence before summoning him to the Harare Central Police Station. He was released in the afternoon without charge.
Later on Friday, the police issued a statement announcing a manhunt for AMH senior journalist Blessed Mhlanga, accusing him of distributing content deemed harmful to the State.
Mhlanga, however, said that he would present himself to the police on Monday as he is currently unwell. He wrote on X:

This development follows a recent interview by Mhlanga with ZANU PF central committee member and war veteran Blessed Geza, who issued President Emmerson Mnangagwa an ultimatum to step down.
This week, armed security personnel visited HSTV studios twice in search of Mhlanga. On Thursday, three armed men arrived at the HSTV office, causing panic in the newsroom.
Earlier this month, Mhlanga was summoned to the Harare Central Police Station over a six-year-old case involving former Finance Deputy Minister Terrence Mukupe.

Plainclothes police visited the CEO of a media company in Zimbabwe at his home. The CEO was taken to the police station but later released. The police are also looking for a journalist from the same media company. The journalist said he would go to the police on Monday because he is sick. This all happened after the journalist interviewed someone who criticized the president. The police also visited the media company's TV studio looking for the journalist.

Plainclothes Police Visit AMH CEO Kenias Mafudzike At Home

Police have launched a manhunt for Heart and Soul TV (HSTV) journalist Blessed Mhlanga, whom they are seeking for questioning.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed on Friday, 21 February, that Mhlanga is wanted in connection with allegations of violating Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
This section pertains to the unlawful transmission of a data message to any individual, group, or the public, with the intent to incite acts of violence using a computer or information system. Said Nyathi:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is seeking information on the location and subsequent interview of journalist, Blessed Mhlanga.
This is in connection with allegations of contravening Section 164 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.

In response to Nyathi on X, Mhlanga said he is not in hiding and will surrender to the police on Monday. He wrote:

On 17 February 2025, three people with pistols reportedly visited the offices of HSTV in Harare, looking for Mhlanga.

Three Armed Men Storm NewsDay Journalist's Office

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) senior journalist Blessed Mhlanga was summoned to Harare Central Police Station on Monday by the ZRP Law and Order Section to discuss an undisclosed matter.
Mhlanga visited the station with MISA Zimbabwe’s External Legal Counsel, Chris Mhike, due to concerns about the intentions of the police.
It was later revealed that the police wanted to discuss the status of a six-year-old case against former deputy Finance minister Terrence Mukupe. Said Mhike:

We were astonished to arrive at the police station to be informed, after some dilly-dallying by officers in attendance at the station, that police only wanted to establish the status of Mhlanga’s very old case against Terrence Mukupe, Zimbabwe’s former deputy finance minister.
</blockquote>
Mhike said that in the old case, Mukupe was accused of assaulting the journalist in a radio studio during a live political debate in May 2018.
Mukupe was also accused of taking a phone belonging to Mhlanga’s wife.
This incident led to both criminal and civil legal proceedings initiated by Mhlanga against Mukupe. 
The civil matter was resolved in June 2018 when a Harare Magistrate ordered Mukupe to return the phone to its owner.
A few months later, the criminal cases between the parties were also terminated through mutual agreement. Added Mhike:

It is therefore extremely odd to hear of the police digging up a case that terminated more than six years ago.
The police were notified about the termination of the criminal, as well as the civil proceedings in the Mukupe cases, at the material time.
There was therefore no good reason for the Police to summon the journalist Mhlanga to the police station today. This behaviour amounts to harassment of the press.

Mhlanga was allowed to leave, and Mhike urged the police to refrain from disturbing Mhlanga’s journalistic endeavours, as well as those of any other journalist working in Zimbabwe.
Mhlanga’s arrest followed his interview with ZANU PF Central Committee member and War Veteran Blessed Geza, who has been making critical comments about President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In the interview, Geza accused Mnangagwa of corruption, nepotism, tribalism, and failing to address the country’s economic challenges, while calling for his resignation.

A journalist named Blessed Mhlanga was called by the police to talk about a case that happened six years ago. The case was about an ex-deputy minister who allegedly assaulted Mhlanga during a radio debate. The case was closed in 2018, but the police wanted to know what happened. Mhlanga's lawyer said it was strange for the police to bring up an old case. The lawyer also said the police shouldn't bother journalists and let them do their work. Mhlanga was allowed to leave, and his lawyer asked the police not to disturb journalists in Zimbabwe.

ZRP Summons Prominent Journalist Over A Case Closed Six Years Ago

ZANU PF spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, believes that the presence of solar panels and boreholes in rural areas demonstrates prosperity in Zimbabwe. He claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has actively pursued practical initiatives for prosperity.
In response to Blessed Mhlanga’s inquiry about the distribution of benefits from gold production, Mutsvangwa pointed out the visible signs of economic progress, such as young people building houses and investing in boreholes through their earnings from gold. During the Heroes Day celebrations, Mhlanga stated that the majority of the population would dispute the extent of economic progress claimed by Mutsvangwa for Zimbabwe. He said:

Mutsvangwa responded by saying:

Mhlanga alleged that the Gold Mafia, not the general population, benefits from gold production in Zimbabwe. In contrast, Mutsvangwa stated that the nation is making progress towards prosperity, honouring the aspirations of fallen heroes. He encouraged both local and foreign investors to consider opportunities in lithium, platinum, and gold. Mutsvangwa denied reports of starvation, emphasizing that Zimbabwe is exploring possibilities to export grain to other nations.
Mutsvangwa also said Gold Mafia was a creation of those offended by Zimbabwe’s ability to stabilise the macroeconomy and the local currency.

Mutsvangwa Says Solar Panels And Boreholes In Rural Areas Are Signs Of Zimbabwe's Prosperity

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalists Chengeto Chidi and Blessed Mhlanga are suing the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, Kazembe Kazembe, and Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga for alleged unlawful arrest and detention.
Chidi and Mhlanga were arrested in May this year while covering a by-election in Chitungwiza.
Police officers accused the duo of using mobile phones and a canon camera to take photographs and record a video without permission from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
The incident occurred near the ward 7 polling station tent in Zengeza West, Chitungwiza.
Chidi and Mhlanga were charged with contravening section 25(a) of the Electoral Act which prohibits taking photographs at a polling station but were both found not guilty.
They have now filed a US$50 000 lawsuit against the State for unlawful arrest and detention.
Last week the two, through their lawyers submitted an intention to sue notice in terms of the State Liabilities Act as read with section 70 of the Police Act. Their lawyers wrote:

We write to give you notice of our client’s intention to sue you and various police officers employed by the State for damages arising from unlawful arrest, wrongful detention, malicious prosecution, loss of income, and self-development opportunities and expenses incurred arising out of the arrest and prosecution including but not limited to medical expenses, travelling expenses, and legal expenses.

In response, police legal services director Inspector T Gotora acknowledged receipt of their notice. Said Gotora:

Two AMH Journalists Sue Govt Over Unlawful Arrest And Detention

MISA Zimbabwe has condemned the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/seven-journalists-chased-out-of-state-house/">ejection of seven journalists from the State House</a> where President Emmerson Mnangagwa appointed a Tribunal to inquire into the removal from office of Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission’s Spokesperson John Makamure.
The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Mr Nick Mangwana had earlier shared the details of this event on his personal Twitter page and indicated that “Media is invited”.
However, upon arriving at the State House and undergoing all the required procedures, it is reported that one of the security officers then asked for press cards. 
Resultantly, Alpha Media Holdings journalists Taurai Mangudhla, Shepherd Tozvireva, Blessed Mhlanga and Chengeto Chidi, Daily News reporter Katty Nyoni and Heart and Soul TV journalists Zibusiso Ncube and Atricia Gondo were then kicked out. 
The journalists highlighted that the security officer indicated that there were specific media houses that were welcome at this event. Journalists from state media representing ZTN, ZBC and The Herald were allowed to remain and cover the event.
In a statement seen by Pindula news, MISA Zimbabwe said all journalists should be afforded fair and equal opportunities to access information. Reads the statement:

MISA Zimbabwe condemns this continuation of discrimination against private media. All media practitioners, whether from state or private media, have a constitutional right to seek, receive and impart information as part of their media freedom.
The Constitution is very clear in Section 44 that the State and every person, including juristic persons and every institution and agency of the government at every level, must respect, protect, promote and fulfil the rights and freedoms set out in the Constitution.
There is, therefore no lawful, reasonable or justifiable basis for the discrimination of journalists from private media and the infringement to the realisation of their constitutional rights.
MISA Zimbabwe calls on all stakeholders within government, including the Zimbabwe Media Commission and the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services to undertake key and practical steps towards addressing this recurring media violation.
All journalists should be afforded fair and equal opportunities to access information.

MISA Zimbabwe Condemns Ejection Of 7 Journalists From State House Event

State security officers Monday chased out seven journalists from State House where President Emmerson Mnangagwa was swearing in <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/president-mnangagwa-sets-commission-to-investigate-zacc-spokesperson/">a three-member tribunal</a> to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zacc-spokesperson-faces-expulsion-over-corruption-allegations/">investigate the removal from office</a> of Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) spokesperson John Makamure.
NewsDay chief reporter Taurai Mangudhla, photographer Shepherd Tozvireva, Heart and Soul head of current affairs and news Blessed Mhlanga and reporters Chengeto Chidi, Zibusiso Ncube and Atrishya Gondo were booted out by one of the security personnel without giving reasons.
Daily News reporter Katty Nyoni was also ejected.
This happened soon after the journalists had gone through the routine security clearance process plus COVID-19 tests at the State House clinic, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200002134/amh-journos-kicked-out-of-state-house-function">NewsDay</a>.
Meanwhile, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere has criticised the ejection of journalists from a public event. She said:

What kind of “government” chases journalists away from a national event paid for by taxpayers? It’s unconstitutional. You can’t only allow journalists you like and control. Media freedom is impossible under this regime. We need new leaders.

This ejection of the reporters comes amid calls for the implementation of media reforms to ensure the freedom of journalists and media houses.

Seven Journalists Chased Out Of State House

A Chitungwiza resident is set to be sentenced on the 23rd of August in a case he is accused of instigating violence against police officers.
Moses Hakata, is set to return to court on 23 August, where Chitungwiza Magistrate Rumbidzai Kabasa will hand down her ruling after a full trial.
<h2>Allegations:</h2>
Hakata is on trial on charges of disorderly conduct as defined in section 41 of the Criminal Law (Codification &amp; Reform) Act. Prosecutors allege that Hakata behaved in disorderly conduct while outside a polling station, where he reportedly told people to assault some ZRP officers and disregarded their orders. 
He was also charged with incitement as defined in section 187 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act wherein he is accused of persuading or inducing people to assault police officers. 
In his defence, Hakata, who is represented by Tapiwa Muchineripi of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, argued that he was arrested while trying to remonstrate with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers who were allegedly manhandling and harassing Blessed Mhlanga, an Alpha Media Holdings journalist “who was executing his duties.”
<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/05/09/alpha-media-holdings-journalists-blessed-mhlanga-and-chengeto-chidi-released-on-bail/">Mhlanga was arrested in May together with fellow journalist, Chengeto Chidi</a> and spent two nights in prison allegedly for taking pictures 60 metres from a polling station without authority.
Their actions, according to authorities, were in violation of Section 147(1) of the Electoral Act as read with Section 25 of Statutory Instrument (SI) 21/05 which prohibits the taking of photos ​​within a polling station while voting is in progress.

Journalists' Arrest: Man Up For "Instigating" Violence Against Police Officers

Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) journalists Blessed Mhlanga and Chengeto Chidi spent Saturday night in police holding cells at Harare Central Police Station following their arrest in Chitungwiza.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Mhlanga and Chidi were arrested for discharging their professional duties as media practitioners.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) accuses the scribes of taking video footage in a polling station in contravention of Section 147(1) of the Electoral Act as read with Section 25 of SI 21 of 2005, a charge which they deny.
Mhlanga and Chidi said that they were at a borehole interviewing some residents about water challenges in Chitungwiza.
Mhlanga also pressed malicious damage to property charges against Superintendent Matsika, who seized and damaged his mobile phone handset, a Pr0 40 Huawei, before releasing it.
Police officers are also accused of confiscating the journalists’ camera and a tripod.
