Confectionery producer Bakers Inn is undergoing significant staff cuts following a major restructuring effort aimed at streamlining its distribution processes after incurring a loss of US$1.08 million.
According to the <a href="https://www.theindependent.co.zw/business-digest/article/200030968/bakers-inn-restructures-cuts-staff-after-us1m-loss">Zimbabwe Independent</a>, Bakers Inn previously handled its logistics independently through Bakers Inn Logistics (Pvt) Ltd, a subsidiary of Innscor Africa Limited.
Simbisa Brands Limited, Bakers Inn’s parent company, was formerly part of Innscor before being unbundled into a standalone entity in 2015.
Simbisa has now decided to merge its sales and distribution operations with logistics under a single management structure within Bakers Inn.
This move has resulted in the redundancy of several positions, leading to a wave of retrenchments.
Documents obtained by the Zimbabwe Independent reveal that the restructuring was driven by escalating operational costs, which had severely impacted the company’s viability. The documents, dated July 1, read in part:

Bakers Inn Logistics division has been operating as an independent unit from the Bakers Inn Sales and Distribution division.
The business has consolidated them both and this has eradicated the need for parallel structures, especially in the finance and administration department and the human resources department.
The employer has undertaken a restructuring exercise, which has resulted in the posts of the selected employees being redundant, thereby necessitating the termination of the contracts of employment by way of retrenchment.
The move to restructure the company has also been necessitated by high operational costs in an increasingly difficult macroeconomic operating environment.

It has emerged that Bakers Inn has been operating at a loss for the past two years, primarily due to high exchange rate losses and the rising cost of doing business. The documents further state:

For example, the company realised an after-tax loss of US$1,08 million for the nine months ended 31 March 2024 and an audited loss of US$1,14 million for the year ended 30 June 2023.
This has been a result of high operational costs in an increasingly difficult macroeconomic operating environment where business performance was impacted by large exchange losses from the weakening of local currency on ZWL-denominated receivables, an increase in the cost of doing business arising from the change in VAT (value added tax) status for the baking industry from zero-rated to exempt.

According to the documents, the VAT change alone cost the company US$110,000 in the first quarter of the year.
As part of its restructuring efforts, Bakers Inn has handed over the operations of several depots to partners, who will take on the responsibility of supplying bread to those areas at their own expense.
This transition has resulted in the redundancy of numerous employees at those depots.

Bakers Inn Restructures, Lays Off Workers After US$1.08 Million Loss

President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that his government has created an economic environment for Zimbabweans to excel, therefore, citizens should not be ashamed of making money.
Speaking after commissioning the US$30 million new Bakers Inn plant in Bulawayo on Friday, Mnangagwa, however, said money should be made within the confines of the law. He said (via <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200027069/dont-be-shy-to-make-money-ed">NewsDay</a>):

We must not be shy to make money. Where we are creating an economic environment for those who want to excel, there’s no limit. Make money, make money the best way you can.

Mnangagwa also praised Innscor Africa Limited’s US$30 million investment into its Bakers Inn unit and said he expects the company to lower its production costs and deliver quality goods at reasonable prices. He said:

I want from the onset to commend Innscor Africa Limited under their Baker’s Inn flagship for choosing to make this important investment in Bulawayo.
Your bold decision is in line with our Devolution and Decentralisation Policy which seeks to realise equitable development, infrastructure development, modernisation, and industrialisation across all our cities, towns, and districts.
As I was touring the factory, I told myself that these were the fruits of the Second Republic.

Mnangagwa urged grain millers and players in the baking industry to support farmers to increase domestic wheat production. He said:

To complement government efforts, I urge players in the milling and baking industry to increase the number of contracted farmers to boost domestic wheat production and that of other crops.
Furthermore, I exhort investors to invest in the production of other raw materials required for baking, which are currently being imported, such as fats and enzymes, among others.

The commissioning ceremony in the Belmont Industrial Area was also attended by Vice President Kembo Mohadi, Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Judith Ncube, Industry and Commerce Minister Mangaliso Ndlovu, Innscor Africa Limited executives, and prominent figures from the industrial sector.

Baker's Inn Has Reduced Bread Price Effective Immediately

Baker’s Inn Bakery has reduced the price of bread in response to the strengthening of the Zimbabwe dollar.
The new price of bread has been pegged at ZWL$5 800 wholesale and ZWL$6 400 retail.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/bakers-inn-slashes-bread-prices/">The Herald</a>, Baker’s Inn’s chief operating officer Benjamin Mavros commended the Government in its efforts to stabilise the market. He said:
<blockquote>
We have seen the Government’s notable efforts to combat inflation and in support of this, we have reduced the price of bread as a way to hold our local currency.
Bread is a basic commodity and should thus be affordable and available to everybody.
Baker’s Inn values its customers nationwide and that is why the new price of bread will be experienced across the entire country, from Beitbridge to Gokwe to Victoria Falls.
We expect our customers to be very excited by this reduction and as a result, we are expecting to see volume growth.

Baker’s Inn Slashes Price Of Bread

One of the country’s largest break manufacturers, Baker’s Inn, has hiked the wholesale price of bread to ZWL$559.60 per loaf. Bread will likely be retailed for at least ZWL$600 per loaf.
A leaked invoice dated 4 June 2022 signed by a Baker’s Inn salesperson shows that the wholesale price of a loaf of superior brown bread is now ZWL$559.60.
Prices of basic grocery items and services have been changing on a weekly basis over the past few months in response to the depreciating Zimbabwe dollar.

In April, Industry and Commerce Deputy Minister, Raj Modi, said the Russia-Ukraine war has caused a rise in global fuel prices, a development that affects production lines, not only in Zimbabwe but across the whole world.
Modi made the remarks soon after the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) announced a 52 per cent and 31 per cent increase for mealie-meal and flour respectively. He said:

The justification for the increase is well known by everyone, it’s because of the war (Ukraine-Russia war).
The price of fuel, which is the lifeline for any production chain in any industry went up.
To import and transport any raw materials you need fuel.
It’s not only in Zimbabwe that food prices have gone up. It’s the world over.
However, if there was no war, we would not be talking of price increases.

Price Of Bread Hiked, Again

Some Bakers have raised their prices of bread to over ZW$50 dollars as the inflation continues to soar. The prices have been increased twice this week from an average of $45 to about $53.
Some attribute the escalation to the continuous loss of value of the local currency which was this Friday being sold at around $70 for a United States dollar.
Last year, bread prices soared mainly because of the shortage of essential inputs particularly wheat with Millers indicating the reserves were running dry.
The government allegedly disbursed USD27 million for the importation of wheat and <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/02/11/gmaz-should-be-accountable-for-usd27m-it-was-given-for-wheat-importation-justice-m-wadyajena/">reports suggest that it was abused</a> by the Grain Millers Association.

A snap survey we conducted this Thursday has suggested that bread price has been increased <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/02/25/price-of-bread-goes-up-bakers-cite-rising-production-costs/">from an average of $21 for a standard loaf</a> to $25.
When the prices were reviewed up last week from $18 to $20 or $21, National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe president, Dennis Wallah, said attributed the increase to an increased production cost.
Wallah said that flour is not subsidised hence market forces were at play. The country, since last year had limited quantities of flour in its reserves following a poor agriculture season.
The increase can also be attributed to a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/03/04/picture-zera-marginally-hike-fuel-prices/">recent increase in fuel prices</a> since bread prices, like those of other commodities, usually go up in response to fuel prices.

Bread Prices Go Up, Again

The Zimbabwe Republic Police have released the names of people who died on Friday when a <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/5-die-on-spot-in-bakers-inn-truck-and-toyota-granvia-accident/">Kadoma-bound Baker’s Inn truck and a Toyota Granvia collided along the Harare-Bulawayo Road.</a>
They also revealed that the death toll that was initially at five has since risen to six. Police have named the victims of the accident. Below are the names of the victims:

<li>Norman Manjere (44) of ZRP Kadoma main camp,</li>
<li>Juliet Chinembiri (35) of Rimuka, Kadoma,</li>
<li>Aysha Muhawo (26) of Rio Zimbabwe, Kadoma,</li>
<li>Agara Faki (37) from Rimuka, and</li>
<li>Godknows Kuseka from Rimuka.</li>
</ol>
The deputy national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Blessmore Chishaka added:
<blockquote>We are still to communicate with the next of kin for the sixth victim and the name will be released as soon as they are informed.</blockquote>
The Toyota Granvia had 15 people on board and four people, including the driver, died on the spot while one other person died on admission at Kadoma Hospital.
The police indicated that the accident was caused by the Baker’s Inn truck driver who swerved to the right encroaching into the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in a head-on collision with a Toyota Granvia that was travelling in the opposite direction.

Five people have died while 12 more were left nursing wounds when a Kadoma-bound Baker’s Inn truck and a Toyota Granvia collided along the Harare-Bulawayo Road on Friday.
The accident was confirmed by Deputy national police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Blessmore Chishaka who told the Herald that the Toyota Granvia had 15 people on board and four people, including the driver, died on the spot while one other person died on admission at Kadoma Hospital. Chishaka added:
<blockquote>Circumstances are that a male adult was driving a delivery truck along Harare-Bulawayo Road towards Kadoma with two passengers on board.
On approaching the 123-kilometre peg, the truck driver swerved to the right encroaching into the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in a head-on collision with a Toyota Granvia that was travelling in the opposite direction.</blockquote>
Chishaka also said that four of the injured were referred to Kadoma Hospital and the other eight were referred to Chegutu Hospital.

5 Die On Spot In Baker's Inn Truck And Toyota Granvia Accident

Bakers Inn outlets in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bulawayo</a> slashed the price of a standard loaf of bread from $18,50 to $16.50, in a bid to lure customers back after sales fell drastically.
Bakers’ Association of Zimbabwe president Dennis Wallah confirmed the price reduction. He said:
<blockquote>I am aware that <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Bakers_Inn" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Bakers Inn</a> has reduced the price of bread to $16. However, I cannot speak for other bakers in the industry as we have no provision to regulate prices.
Other bakers may charge lower prices if they have an operating advantage and can lower costs. Generally, bread sales have been low for the past few weeks, so it will be an effort to lure more customers and push volumes in sales.</blockquote>
Street vendors have been selling bread at lower prices compared to established retail outlets, a situation that has further reduced the latter’s sales.
Some members of the public revealed that they are no longer buying bread from grocery shops in the suburbs, accusing them of selling stale bread which would have developed moulds.

Some bakers have reduced the price of bread by about $1 after the government started supplying millers with cheaper flour.
The National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe (NBAZ) chief executive Ngoni Mazango confirmed the development in a press statement on Thursday. He said:
<blockquote>Baker’s Inn as from Tuesday 29 October 2019 reduced its wholesale price from $14 to $13. The recommended retail price is between $14 and $14,50.
Consumers were having to pay as high as $15,75 in the last weeks. This price will hold for as long as Baker’s Inn Bakeries have subsidised flour.</blockquote>
Bread suddenly disappeared from supermarket shelves last month, with rumours doing the rounds that bakeries were mulling a price hike.
The price hike duly came when bread reappeared about a week after it had disappeared with the price for a loaf of bread climbing from $9.50 to $15.75.

Price Of Bread Falls Marginally

Bakers Association of Zimbabwe has said that bakers are diverting bread from the formal to the parallel market where they charge outrageous prices. Bread on the parallel market now costs between $5 and $6 dollars as it is scarce on the formal market.
The Herald reports that most supermarkets and registered tuckshops in the city centre, Chitungwiza, Mabvuku, Mbare, Budiriro, Kuwadzana and Warren Park are no longer selling bread because of the practice.
Salespersons are reportedly offloading bread on the black market at $4 and or $4,50 per loaf, instead of shops. The sales representatives then pocket the difference. They demand payment in cash. The burden will then be passed on to the consumers who are forced to buy a loaf of bread at $6 cash from the vendors.
Wala warned against selling bread at outrageous prices saying that there will be consequences. He said:
<blockquote>As far as we are concerned, the retail price of a 700g loaf of bread should not exceed $4. Bread must be sold on the formal market. If one sells a loaf of bread over and above $4, they should be answerable for their actions.</blockquote>
Zimbabwe is facing an acute shortage of bread as wheat reserves have depleted. The scarcity of foreign currency to import wheat from other countries is another factor worsening the issue.

A Cabinet Minister has revealed that a total of 89 individuals have registered to revive or set up new small community bakeries around the country. Setting up small community bakeries is believed to be a strategy to stabilise prices.
Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister Dr. Sithembiso Nyoni said Government has received positive responses from individuals aspiring to be players in the bread industry. In an interview, Dr. Nyoni said:
<blockquote>So far 89 people have registered for the programme and we think there will be more. This is a free market and as many people should come forward. Everybody is free to participate. I know every town used to have a bakery but now you will see that a Nkayi resident will wait for bread to come from Bulawayo. The same goes for someone in Tsholotsho, waiting for bread to come from Bulawayo.</blockquote>
Dr. Nyoni also said that the government was willing to support every sector that produces products locally.
The government is accusing three major bakeries, Lobel’s, Proton and Bakers Inn for “unreasonably” increasing prices for products such as bread.

89 Register To Set Community Bakeries As Govt Takes On Big Bakeries

Shoppers in Greendale, Harare are reportedly snubbing Bakers’ Inn bread and opting for Lobel’s Bread.
The reason being that Bakers’ Inn is selling a loaf of bread for $3.50 while Lobel’s bread costs $2.50 a loaf.
The three main bakeries, Proton, Bakers’ Inn and Lobel’s hiked the price of a standard loaf of bread to roughly $3.50 last week, a move which was condemned by the government and consumer rights groups.
While retailers have generally turned a deaf ear to the government’s calls to reduce prices, it seems some are backtracking.
Writing on microblogging site Twitter, The Herald editor Ceasar Zvayi revealed that some consumers are now protesting using their purses. <a href="https://twitter.com/caesarzvayi/status/1120218005449977856" rel="noopener" target="_blank">He wrote</a>:
<blockquote>Labels are retailing at $2.50 a loaf while Bakers Inn is at $3.50 a loaf. I found a Bakers Inn truck parked at Athlone shops as the driver negotiated with the shop owner to take delivery. He was told no Bakers Inn loaf had moved and they couldn’t take anymore.</blockquote>
Retailers have been increasing prices of goods, citing the fall in the value of the RTGS dollar against the US dollar on the parallel market.

Shoppers Shun Bakers' Inn Bread, Opt For Lobel's - Report

The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Mangaliso Ndlovu said that the government will not allow bakers to hike the price of bread without approval.
In an interview with CITE, Minister Ndlovu had this to say:
<blockquote>The circular went around yesterday but I don’t think the price has actually gone up. I spoke to bakers not to increase bread. They would not be effecting the increase today and I am yet to meet the bakers on a way forward.
The bakers’ argument is they are importing certain ingredients, which they need to make bread but this is why we were doing a series trying to highlight that people should use local supplies.
Local bakers who have been using local ingredients say their bread moves faster. The other challenge the bakers said was foreign currency needed to import these ingredients but some bakers will tell you our yeast and premix are sufficient for bread production.</blockquote>
The latest bread price hike was announced by major local bread manufacturer Innscor through a circular dated March 5, 2019.
The new price for a standard loaf of bread was set at $2.70 from $1.80.

Govt Blocks Latest Bread Price Hike

Baker’s Inn has raised the price of bread effective Wednesday, March 6, 2019.
In a letter addressed to a Mr Terrance Yeatman, the managing director of Spar, Baker’s Inn said a standard loaf of bread (all variants per unit) will cost $2.45 wholesale delivery price while the recommended retail price is $2.70.

Baker's Inn Hikes Price Of Bread To $2.70

With effect from tomorrow onwards, the price of bread will go back to its old prices of $0.90 for a standard loaf and $1.00 for a family loaf. This comes after Minister of Industry, Commerce and Enterprise Development Mike Bimha called for<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/12/18/minister-calls-for-urgent-meeting-on-the-price-of-bread/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"> an urgent meeting to discuss the price of bread</a> on Monday morning. The meeting was convened after Bakers Inn announced that the price of bread had been increased by $0.10 from $0.90 to $1.00 for a standard loaf and from $1.00 to $1.10 for a family loaf.
The meeting was held at Mukwati building and was attended by:

Minister Bimha also said that his Ministry is currently working on the price escalations for other products.  He revealed that consultations are ongoing.

Bread To Revert Back To Old Prices After Urgent Meeting Called For By Minister

The price of a loaf of bread has gone up by $0.10 cents. This comes as the price of basic commodities continues to skyrocket. One of the country’s top bakeries, Bakers Inn announced that the price of a standard loaf is now $1.00 from $0.90 while the price of a family loaf is now $1.10 from $1.00. The company said this had been necessitated by the increase in the price of raw materials.
However, this assertion was disputed by the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) which said the price increase was unjustified. GMAZ chairperson, Tafadzwa Musarara said:
<blockquote>The grain milling industry is deeply shocked by the more than 10% increase in bread prices that consumers woke up to on Saturday, December 16, 2017. As the suppliers of the major raw material in bread baking, flour, we find the increase unreasonable and devoid of any economic justification.
In that published list, bakers flour had (and still have) maximum price to bakers of US$32 per 50kg bag. The bakers did not object to this price because it is the same price that has been maintained by milling industry for the past five years. In fact, the three big bakers namely Bakers Inn, Proton and Labels who control more than 80% of the bread market, buy at much lower prices than US$32 per 50kg bag. Therefore, the increase cannot be attributed to any increase in the cost of flour because there isn’t any increase of that sort.
GMAZ avers that consumers have been short-changed during this festive season where demand is at its highest. Accordingly, bakers have a duty to explain the increase to authorities and the consuming public.</blockquote>

Price of Bread Has Gone Up By 10 Percent, Millers Say This Is Unjustified

Baker’s Inn is set to install a $5 million third production line at its Belmont plant in Bulawayo, a development that will see the company producing 220 000 loaves a day up from 120 000.
The move will create <a href="https://vacancymail.co.za/categories/agriculture-forestry-environmental-fishing-jobs-in-south-africa/">jobs</a>.
Baker’s Inn general manager Mr Felix Vazhure told Business Chronicle:
 
<blockquote>Currently, with the two production lines here, we are producing 120 000 loaves a day. The plant that is coming here from Harare is five-years-old and it produces 100 000 loaves a day. On the 19th or 20th of April that plant will be moved this side. If we are to knock it down now, it means we will not be able to meet demand during the Easter and Independence holidays as demand for bread will be high.</blockquote>
Baker’s Inn Belmont factory supplies Bulawayo, the Midlands, Matabeleland North, Matabeleland South, and Masvingo provinces as well as Eastern lowveld in Chiredzi. Turning to employment figures, Mr Vazhure said the coming on board of the third production line would create an additional 200 <a href="https://vacancymail.co.za/categories/aviation-jobs-in-south-africa/">jobs</a> indirectly. He Said:
 
<blockquote>On the production side we employ 135 people. Now with the coming in of a new plant, we are looking at employing an additional minimum of 60 people on the production side. Actually, there are more people selling than those employed in the production section because there (production) you can automate but on selling you cannot.</blockquote>
