A 22-year-old woman from Kwekwe, Rumbidzai Gunhu, tragically lost her one-week-old baby to a stranger in what is suspected to be a case of kidnapping.
Gunhu was returning from the hospital with her infant when she encountered a woman who offered to help carry the baby.
Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the spokesperson for the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Midlands Province, confirmed the incident. He said (via <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200035945/woman-loses-baby-to-stranger">Southern Eye</a>):
<blockquote>
Yes, there is a case of kidnapping of a seven-day-old female infant to an unknown female adult who purported to assist the mother in carrying the baby from the Kwekwe District Hospital home.
</blockquote>
He said Gunhu, of Mbizo, had gone to the hospital for post-natal care. Added Insp. Mahoko:

After the services, she left the post-natal care unit holding the baby and met an unknown female adult who offered to accompany her home assisting in carrying the baby.
On the way, the woman gave Gunhu ZiG20 to go and buy freezits while she remained holding the baby.
Gunhu returned after a few minutes and could not locate the woman and the baby.

Insp. Mahoko has appealed to anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the woman and recovery of the baby to alert any nearest police station.

A 22-year-old woman from Kwekwe named Rumbidzai Gunhu lost her one-week-old baby to a stranger. Gunhu was coming back from the hospital with her baby when a woman offered to help carry the baby. The woman disappeared with the baby while Gunhu was away for a short time. The police are looking for the woman and the baby. They are asking for anyone with information to tell the police. Gunhu is very sad and wants her baby back.

Kwekwe Woman Loses Baby To Stranger

A 30-year-old woman from Plumtree, Bulilima District, Matabeleland South Province, has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a baby at a local hospital.
According to a <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/crime-court/30-year-old-woman-arrested-after-kidnapping-baby/">ZBC News</a> report on Wednesday, 08 May, the suspect, Anite Moyo, was nabbed after she presented a seven-day-old baby at Empandeni Clinic, claiming to have given birth at home.
The nurses became suspicious after she failed to give satisfactory answers on why she had never been to any clinic during her pregnancy.
Moyo was arrested after the mother of the child positively identified the baby and the accused.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland South Police, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed Moyo’s arrest to ZBC News.
Earlier on Tuesday, CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni </a>reported that the mother of the baby, aged 22, had gone to Plumtree Hospital for a routine check-up when she met the suspected kidnapper.
The suspect claimed to the baby’s mother that she too, had a child who was admitted at the hospital.
The grandfather of the missing baby told CITE that his daughter first met up with the accused by the gate when she was going to collect some lunch money from her grandmother. He said:

My daughter had gone to hospital with her mother (my wife) who then had to leave her at the hospital as she had to prepare for another child going to school.
My daughter then asked for lunch money from her mother who then sent someone to go and give her.
It was on my daughter’s way to fetch that money that she first met up with the accused person who asked her the age of her baby before parting ways.
When my daughter returned to the queue she found the accused also in the queue without a baby claiming her child was admitted at the hospital, and then they started chatting.

The grandfather explained that as time went by, the woman told his daughter that she was hungry and wanted bananas so she asked her to go and buy the bananas at the gate. He said:

My daughter then left this woman with the baby together with the baby’s cards. When she came back she found the woman together with the baby gone.
She told the nurses about the incident, and they searched all the wards but couldn’t locate her. They then reported the matter to the police.

In March this year, the wife of a retired senior police officer from Gweru was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for kidnapping an infant aged two months.
Sakhile Tanyanyiwa (34), who is the wife of former Police Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa, appeared before the Gweru Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 12 March facing charges of kidnapping.
Tanyanyiwa will, however, serve an effective 12 months in prison after the court conditionally suspended 6 months for 5 years.

Woman (30) Arrested For Stealing Newborn From A Trusting Mother At Plumtree Hospital

A 22-year-old woman from Plumtree is emotionally shattered after her seven-day-old baby was allegedly kidnapped on Monday at Plumtree Hospital by a female stranger she met while going for a routine check-up.
CITE reported that the accused is a woman who claimed to the baby’s mother that she too, had a child who was admitted at the hospital.
The name of the mother of the missing child has been withheld as Police investigations are ongoing.
In an interview with CITE’s <a href="https://cite.org.zw/author/senzeni/">Senzeni Ncube</a>, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson in Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident. She said:

On 6 May 2024 around 2 pm, the complainant went with her seven-day-old baby to Plumtree Hospital for routine checkups. She met the unknown woman and suspects that the accused can be around 26 years old.
The mother said the description of the woman is (she looked) clean, brown in complexion, height of about 1.6 metres. The woman was wearing a green top and a pink skirt

Inspector Mangena said as the two women conversed, the accused claimed she also had a child who was admitted at Plumtree Hospital. Added Insp. Mangena:

She then asked the complainant to buy her some bananas and some soft drinks at the hospital gate, the complainant went to buy them, leaving the baby in the custody of the accused. When she returned, this accused person was nowhere to be found.

Insp. Mangena has appealed to members of the public who might have information that can lead to the arrest of this person to report to any nearest police station.

Stranger Steals Newborn From A Trusting Mother At Plumtree Hospital

The wife of a retired senior police officer from Gweru has been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for kidnapping an infant aged two months.
Sakhile Tanyanyiwa (34), who is the wife of former Police Commissioner Mekia Tanyanyiwa, appeared before the Gweru Magistrates Court this Tuesday, 12 March facing charges of kidnapping.
Tanyanyiwa will, however, serve an effective 12 months in prison after the court conditionally suspended 6 months for 5 years.
The court heard that on 08 March 2024, the infant’s mother went to Gweru Provincial Hospital to collect her baby’s birth record.
On her way back she was offered a lift into town by Tanyanyiwa who was in the company of another man and woman.
The three were in a white Toyota Aqua registration number AFW 6208.
One of the occupants in the vehicle advised the complainant that they would be making a stopover in South View on the way to Gweru Central Business District.
When they got to 6247 South View, the Tanyanyiwa asked the infant’s mother to assist the woman with a “newly born” to disembark from the vehicle. Said the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA):

As the complainant got out of the vehicle the car sped off headed towards the Gweru – Bulawayo highway with the 3 people and her baby. She reported the matter to the Police.
The accused took the child home and misrepresented to her husband that she had given birth.
Her husband did not believe that the child was a newborn infant and doubted her story all the more when he heard that a baby had been snatched in Gweru.

The retired top cop took his wife and the baby to CID Gweru. Tanyanyiwa was positively identified by the infant’s mother at a formal identification parade.

Wife Of Retired Top Cop Jailed For Stealing A Baby

A couple has been arrested for allegedly kidnapping a two-month-old baby in Gweru from its mother, who was provided a lift from the hospital to the Central Business District (CBD).
According to a police memorandum seen by <a href="https://cite.org.zw/gweru-couple-nabbed-for-kidnapping-two-month-old-baby-from-mother-leaving-hospital/">CITE</a>, Sakhile Tanyanyiwa (34), a student at Midlands State University and her husband Mekia Tanyanyiwa (59), a retired Zimbabwe Republic Police commissioner who is now self-employed, have been charged with kidnapping as defined in Section 93(1) (b) (i) (ii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
The informant in this case is the 31-year-old mother of the two-month-old baby, who is recorded as the complainant in the police memo.
The police memo said on 08 March 2024, the mother had taken her daughter (whose names have been withheld to protect their identity) to the hospital to obtain her birth record. Read the memo:
As (she) arrived at Gweru Provincial Hospital main gate, she met Sakhile Tanyanyiwa, a female adult, light in complexion, medium built, appearing to be in the early 30s of age and was wearing a red and blue floral dress.
Sakhile inquired about the directions to the maternity ward and (the mother) gave her the directions and proceeded with her mission to obtain the birth record.
After she was served, the mother returned to the main gate where she wanted to look for transport to the Gweru Central Business District.
Sakhile emerged from the hospital direction driving a Toyota Aqua and offered her a lift. Reads the memo:
<blockquote>
(The mother) got inside the car and while inside she discovered that there were two more ladies whose body appearance and dressing she did not notice.
One was seated at the front passenger’s seat and the other was seated at the right back while Sakhile was driving. Loreen sat on the left side of the back seat.
The one seated in the front passenger’s seat was holding what appeared like a newlyborn baby wrapped in nappies and she looked as if she was from giving birth. All the way she was behaving like she was in birth pain.
</blockquote>
On the way to town, Sakhile told the mother that she wanted to pass through Southview, to drop her sister before proceeding. Said the memo:
<blockquote>
While in Southview, the vehicle was parked by the gate at an unknown address purporting to drop her sister and (the mother) was asked to assist a female passenger who was holding a newly born baby.
(The mother) put her child on the seat and disembarked from the vehicle to go and offer help as requested.
</blockquote>
It is at that time that the vehicle sped off at high speed towards the Gweru to Bulawayo road together with two month old and the mother’s belongings that included an Itel A56 cellphone.
The mother screamed for help and a male adult managed to record the vehicle registration’s number and proceeded to make a report at ZRP Gweru Central.
The Police established that the vehicle registered under Glandina Nhamo’s name, had changed hands multiple times before ending up with Mekia, who was found with the baby. Reads the report:

Mekia was interviewed and he implicated his wife Sakhile Tanyanyiwa nee Tshuma as the one who was in possession of the motor vehicle in question.
</blockquote>
He added that the vehicle was brought to Harare whilst being driven by an unknown female who later escaped into the darkness.
When police contacted the mother, she positively identified her child, her bag with baby clothes and the child’s birth record. Says the memo:
<blockquote>
(The baby) was taken to Gweru Provincial Hospital for examination and was found to be stable. She was later reunited with her mother.
The motor vehicle Toyota Aqua registration number (number withheld) was seized and is held at the station as an exhibit.
</blockquote>
The police memo says when Sakhile was lured to CID Gweru for interviews, she implicated her friend Soneni Nyoni as the one whom she left with the vehicle in question whilst she was going to Masvingo.
Police said investigations continue, with efforts to locate Nyoni while the Tanyanyiwa couple will proceed to court.

Two-month-old Baby Kidnapped In Gweru Reunited With Mum

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police/">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has arrested a woman who <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/010/07/self-proclaimed-prophetess-on-the-run-after-kidnapping-a-baby/">posed as a prophetess and abducted a client’s one-month-old baby</a> in Mutare. After seeking information from the public, the police arrested Rumbidzai Nyamurowa, also known as Madzimai Getrude, at a residence in Dangamvura, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mutare/">Mutare. </a>
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the police said the suspect admitted to kidnapping the baby as a ploy to deceive her husband, who resides in South Africa, into thinking she had given birth. The husband allegedly intended to divorce her due to her inability to conceive. Read the statement:

Reference is made to the ZRP post on X platform on 07/10/23 in which information was being sought to account for a self proclaimed prophetess , Rumbidzai Nyamurowa (28) alias Madzimai Getrude, who kidnapped a baby boy (1 month) during a spiritual healing session on 06/10/23 at a bushy area near Mutare Teachers College. On 09/10/23, detectives in Mutare acted on received information and arrested the suspect at a house in Area 16, Nyamauru, Dangamvura, Mutare. Upon arrest, the suspect confessed that she kidnapped the baby to hoodwink her husband, who is based in South Africa, into believing that she had given birth to the baby. The husband was allegedly harbouring intentions of divorcing her for failing to conceive. Meanwhile, the baby was reunited with his mother.

<h3>Some Context:</h3>
On October 6, 2023, Nyamurowa who was posing as a prophetess kidnapped an ill baby in Mutare at a shrine near Mutare Teachers College. She instructed the baby’s mother to fetch herbs for the baby’s healing and while the mother was away, Nyamurowa took the baby and left. 
<h3>This is not an isolated case</h3>
In Zimbabwe, there are instances where babies are kidnapped for different purposes, including trafficking, rituals, and financial gain. Authorities are encouraging parents and guardians to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions, and report any suspicious activities. It is also essential to educate children about personal safety, staying away from strangers, and using safe travel routes.
