A landlord from Gweru has received a four-month prison sentence, wholly suspended by a magistrate, for assaulting his tenant over unpaid rent.
Jonah Banda (40), from Ascot in Gweru, appeared before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court to face assault charges.
The court heard that on October 1, 2024, at around 12:45 PM, the complainant, a tenant in Banda’s residence, was sewing clothes in the sitting room when Banda knocked on the door and entered before she could respond.
Banda demanded payment for the overdue rent, but when the complainant explained that she had no money, he became enraged. In a violent outburst, he pulled a screwdriver from his pocket and stabbed her twice in the head.
The complainant promptly reported the incident to the police, leading to Banda’s arrest.
Ultimately, he was sentenced to four months in prison, with the sentence suspended on the condition that he does not commit a similar offence within the next five years.

Police have arrested a 30-year-old mother from Mutare for allegedly assaulting her 10-month-old daughter with a large stick while attempting to force her to crawl.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the woman was arrested in Temberere Village, Zimunya, Mutare, on Friday, following the circulation of a disturbing video of the incident on social media platforms. Police said:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of a 30-year-old woman for allegedly assaulting her baby girl (10 months) with a stick at Temberere Village, Zimunya, Mutare on 11th October 2024.
The incident came to light after a disturbing video went viral on social media, showing the woman brutally attacking the child while ordering her to be quiet and forcing her to crawl.

In response to the ZRP’s post on X (formerly Twitter), user Rickred07 suggested that the woman’s violent behaviour towards her child indicates unresolved issues with her husband. He wrote:

Her actions reflect a displacement of hatred. She harbours unresolved issues with her husband and is redirecting that anger toward the baby.
In many cases, individuals like this may tragically resort to suicide, often taking their children with them by forcing them to consume poison.
We live in a society in need of healing and a deeper understanding of how socioeconomic hardships are impacting people’s behaviour.
This is clearly reflected in the actions of this woman, and if you study the ZRP X timeline, you’ll notice numerous similar cases.
These include baby dumping, murders in rural areas, and relatives attributing misfortunes to witchcraft.

In a separate case, Tinotenda Kutsanza (24) from Chigura Village under Chief Saunyama in Nyanga appeared before the Nyanga Magistrates’ Court facing assault charges.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on August 2, 2023, Kutsanza and the complainant were in her kitchen when Kutsanza poured boiling water on the complainant, causing burns to her right hand and breast.
As the complainant attempted to flee, Kutsanza caught up with her and assaulted her with clenched fists and booted feet all over her body.
An informant intervened and restrained Kutsanza from further assaulting the complainant.
For this crime, Kutsanza was sentenced to nine months in prison, with three months suspended for five years, resulting in an effective six-month sentence.
However, the NPA did not disclose the identity of the complainant or the circumstances that led to Kutsanza’s violent behaviour.

Police Arrest Mother For Assaulting 10-Month-Old In Viral Video

A Zimbabwean couple was reportedly assaulted and their car vandalised by a mob following an accident on Sunday evening in Beta 2, Greater Noida, India.
According to the <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/cities/noida-news/gr-noida-4-booked-as-zimbabwean-couple-assaulted-over-accident-101728326341899.html">Hindustan Times</a>, Michael and his wife Amma, known by their first names, work for a private company and live in a rented apartment in Sector Xu, Greater Noida.
After the incident, they filed a complaint at the Beta-2 police station, which led to the registration of an FIR.
Viddhyut Goyal, the station house officer (SHO) at Beta-2 police station, stated that Michael was driving in the wrong lane at the time of the accident. He said:

On Sunday evening, when Michael and Amma were going in their car to run some errands, he accidentally hit the motorcycle of a deliveryman, identified as Aryan, 25, who was coming from the opposite side.

Following the collision, a heated argument broke out between Michael and Aryan, a resident of Beta 2, and later other deliverymen joined him. Added Goyal:

As tensions escalated, a bystander alerted the police by calling the emergency helpline number 112.
A team from a nearby police station was dispatched to help de-escalate the situation, and officers successfully rescued Michael and his wife.
A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the couple did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
A case under sections 115 (voluntarily causing hurt), 351 (criminal intimidation), 324 (causes the destruction of any property), and 281 (rash driving or riding on a public way) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against the delivery boy and three unidentified people at Beta 2 police station.

Zimbabwean Couple Assaulted And Their Vehicle Damaged By Mob In India

Five villagers from Hwedza, Mashonaland East Province, have been convicted for the shocking assault of a fellow villager.
The incident occurred on July 4, 2024, when the suspects stripped the victim, brutally assaulted her with tree branches, and recorded the entire event on video.
The suspects, four of whom are juveniles under the age of 18 and one aged 19, were arrested after the video of the assault went viral on social media.
They were found guilty of multiple offences, including aggravated indecent assault, cyberbullying, unlawful detention, and assault.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/wedza-women-in-viral-assault-video-found-guilty-sentenced/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, Vimbai Mike (19) and a 17-year-old woman, who is married with two children, have each been sentenced to a total of five years in prison for indecent assault.
They received an additional year for cyberbullying related to the posting of the victim’s video on social media, one year for unlawful detention, and another year for assault. However, these sentences will run concurrently within the five-year term.
The other three juveniles involved were spared custodial sentences on the condition that they refrain from committing similar offences for the next five years.
The court heard that on July 4, 2024, at 11:00 AM, Vimbai Mike (19), Rudo Manjere (17), Lilly Rose Munyoro (16), Lillian Chido Munyoro (17) and Sandra Vhumbunu (17), lured 18-year-old Mavis Mada to Vimbai Mike’s homestead in Mupfuuri village under the pretence of giving her vegetable seedlings.
Once there, they locked her in a hut, stripped her naked, and took turns assaulting her with sticks, inserting three sticks into her private parts while recording the incident.
The victim lost consciousness, and the suspects poured water on her before releasing her at 3:00 PM.
The subsequent arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of a Vivo cellphone that had been used to record the assault.

Three police officers stationed at CID Chiredzi are facing assault charges in the Chiredzi Magistrates’ Court.
The State alleges that on January 14, 2023, at around 8:30 PM, Valentine Dhliwayo (40), James Chiduwo (43), and Isaac Musungati (34) visited the complainant’s residence in Tshovani, Chiredzi, to investigate a case of unlawful entry and theft.
After failing to recover stolen items, including a laptop and US$10,000, the officers allegedly took the complainant to CID Chiredzi and assaulted him, resulting in a leg fracture.
The accused have been remanded until August 30, 2024, for the continuation of their trial.

Three police officers in Chiredzi face assault charges for hurting someone during an investigation. They visited the person's house to solve a theft case but couldn't find the stolen things. 3 CID Chiredzi Officers Face Assault Charges

ZANU PF Masvingo provincial youth chairperson Delight Mandebvu has been handed a two-year prison sentence, wholly suspended, by Magistrate Franklin Mukwanazi for assaulting an opposition member and two other people.
According to reports by <a href="https://tellzim.com/mandebvu-convicted-gets-2-year-jail-term/">TellZim News</a> and <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/violent-zanu-pf-provincial-youth-chairman-gets-2-year-jail-sentence/">The Mirror</a>, Mukwanazi suspended the jail term after considering that the accused suffered a broken leg, which medical reports indicated was permanently damaged, during the altercation.
The suspended sentence was also conditional on Mandebvu not committing a similar offence in the next five years.
The State’s case, as presented by prosecutor Godknows Mugondo, was that on March 2, 2024, Mandebvu assaulted former Masvingo City Mayor Collen Maboke, his wife Tariro, and a relative, Simbarashe Matyei, after their car side-swiped the vehicle in which Mandebvu was travelling in along the Masvingo-Nyika road. The incident occurred at night.
Mandebvu then pursued Maboke’s vehicle, which was being driven by his wife, and blocked it after around 10 kilometres.
Mandebvu disembarked from his vehicle, accompanied by several men, and they assaulted Maboke, his wife, and Matyei, who was allegedly struck in the face with a bottle.
Mandebvu’s left foot was run over by a vehicle as he was assaulting the trio. Medical reports showed that the foot sustained permanent damage.
The case dragged on for an extended period, as Mandebvu had been presenting one excuse after another.
At one point, Mandebvu even filed attempted murder charges against Maboke, alleging that he was hit by Maboke’s vehicle, rather than any other vehicle as had been reported.
On another occasion, Mandebvu told the court that he wanted to seek a lawyer outside of Masvingo, claiming that the local lawyers were friends with Maboke and, therefore, compromised.
Ultimately, Mandebvu was convicted after the court concluded that his defence had significant flaws and that it did not make sense for Maboke to run him over after a minor misunderstanding following the side-swipe incident.

Violent ZANU PF Provincial Youth Chairman Gets 2-Year-jail Term

An 18-year-old woman from Hwedza, Mavis Made, has begun a three-month nurse aide training programme at Pacific Hospital in Mabvuku.
Made was the victim of a horrific four-hour attack by a group of fellow teenage women last month in Mupfuuri Village in Hwedza.
Her assailants recorded the brutal assault, during which they inserted three sticks into her private parts.
Despite the trauma of this savage attack, Made, who is an ardent follower of the ZCC church, told <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/teenage-woman-who-was-battered-by-five-colleagues-starts-training-as-a-nurse-aide/">H-Metro</a> that she was now feeling better. She said:

Allow me to thank Dr Mandaza of Pacific Hospital for giving me free treatment. I am now feeling better.
The hospital went on to give me the opportunity to undergo training as a nurse aide and it is my wish to succeed as a way of thanking them for their offer.

Pacific Hospital Sister in Charge, Nyasha Smileage Chidzingwa, said Made will undergo the training for free. She said:

By training her, the Hospital wants to equip and develop her, apart from treating her.

Hwedza Brutal Attack Survivor Starts Nurse Aide Training

A woman from Zvimba District, Mashonaland West Province, sustained injuries after she was reportedly assaulted by her husband with a hammer in the head for refusing to kill their child for ritual purposes.
As reported by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-attacks-wife-for-refusing-to-kill-child-in-ritual/">The Herald</a>, on Wednesday, Musa Hove (41) appeared before Mbare magistrate Winnet Joni charged with the assault of Evangelistah Chadzingawafa (42).
It is alleged that on Saturday, at around 2 AM, the couple was sleeping in their bedroom when Hove woke up and started accusing his wife of not respecting him.
The State alleged that since 2020, Hove had been insisting that they kill their third-born child for rituals to create wealth and enhance their business, but his wife refused.
On the fateful night, Hove instructed his wife to go and sleep in the spare bedroom with the children, and she complied.
It is alleged that soon after Chadzingawafa left the room, Hove followed with a hammer and hit her twice on the head.
She managed to disarm her husband who still went on to bite her right hand.
Chadzingawafa later went to the police to report the matter which led to the arrest of Hove.

Man Attacks Wife For Allegedly Refusing To Kill Child In Ritual

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of five teenagers who were allegedly involved in stripping naked and assaulting another teenager, following the viral spread of a video of the attack.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 11, 2024, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that the incident occurred on July 4, 2024, in Wedza, Mashonaland East Province.
According to the police statement, three of the alleged assailants are 17 years old, one is 16 years old, and the fifth individual is 19 years old. The victim in this case is an 18-year-old. Read the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Vimbai Mike (19), Rudo Manjere (17), Lilly Rose Munyoro (16), Lillian Chido Munyoro (17) and Sandra Vhumbunu (17) on 10 July 2024 in connection with the case of aggravated indecent assault which occurred at Mupfuuri Village, Wedza on 04. July 2024.
Investigations by the police revealed that on 04 July 2024 at 1100 hours, Rudo Manjere, Lilly Rose Munyoro and Lillian Chido Munyoro lured the victim, Mavis Mada (18), to Vimbai Mike’s homestead at Mupfuuri Village, Wedza on the pretext that they wanted to give her vegetable seedlings. The suspects locked the victim in one of the huts and stripped her naked.
The five suspects took turns to assault the victim with switches and went on to insert three sticks into the victim’s private parts whilst recording a video.
The victim fell unconscious and the suspects poured water on her before freeing her naked at 1500 hours.
The arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of a Vivo cellphone which was used to record the assault incident.
Vimbai Mike is detained in Police custody while the other four suspects, who are juveniles, have been released in custody of their parents and they will be taken to court for the due processes of the law to take its course.
The complainant is alive and is currently receiving medical attention at Mount St Mary’s Hospital.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores the public to settle disputes amicably without resorting to violence. The law will take its course in this case without fear or favour.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying a group of individuals seen in a viral video, who brutally attacked a helpless young woman.
In the disturbing footage, the assailants, some of whom were wearing what appeared to be school uniforms, apparently stripped their victim naked and then violently struck her legs and buttocks with rods.
The reasons behind this savage assault on the young woman, who can be heard pleading for mercy as she lies helpless on the ground, remain unclear at this time. The ZRP said in a statement:

Police Hunt For Attackers Who Stripped And Assaulted Girl In Viral Video

A member of the Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) from Guvamatanga Village, Ward 35 in Gutu Central Constituency, has appeared in court facing allegations of assaulting a village head who had refused to provide him with food aid from the Social Welfare Department.
According to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/ccc-activist-in-court-for-assaulting-village-head-over-food/">The Mirror</a>, the accused, Wilson Guvamatanga, was arrested on Wednesday and later released by a local magistrate after several days in custody.
Guvamatanga is accused of assaulting his uncle, Takakurumbira Guvamatanga, who is the village head. However, the CCC activist denies the assault allegations.
It is also alleged that the Ward 35 councillor, Benson Kurauone Dandira, has been going around forcing village heads to deny food aid to opposition members.
Former acting Chief Gutu, Amon Masanganise, is said to have intervened and ensured that everyone present received their share of the social welfare food aid, after reportedly declaring that “enough is enough.”
According to a source quoted by The Mirror, the elderly village head fell after attempting to assault Guvamatanga, sustaining injuries to his mouth.
It is alleged that Guvamatanga questioned the village head about the denial of food aid, which angered the latter and led to the confrontation.
The food distribution exercise was taking place at Chimunzwa Shops near Chamisa Primary School.
Guvamatanga is being represented by a lawyer from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Martin Mureri.

CCC Activist Arrested For “Assaulting” Village Head Over Food Aid Denial

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Officer In Charge of ZRP Kamativi, Stanley Siampongo (48), who was arrested for allegedly assaulting a female subordinate in February this year, was convicted and sentenced on Thursday, 06 June 2024.
Siampongo was arraigned before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court facing allegations of assault. 
He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment wherein 6 months was suspended on condition that he pay a fine of US$500.
A further 6 months imprisonment was wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in 5 years.
The State proved that Siampongo assaulted his 44-year-old female subordinate on 22 February 2024 after she had reported for duty 2 hours late.
The complainant together with another colleague was summoned to Siampongo’s office. She was asked why she failed to report for duty on time and her explanation did not go down well with the accused person.
He allegedly hit her with fists all over the body and she fell to the ground. She ran to the administration block and he followed her and continued to assault her.
A Police report was made leading to Siampongo’s arrest.

Kamativi ZRP Officer In Charge Fined US$500 For Beating Up Female Subordinate (44)

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Officer In Charge of ZRP Kamativi, Stanley Siampongo (48), was arrested for allegedly assaulting a female subordinate in February this year.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Siampongo was arraigned before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court facing allegations of assault. The NPA said:

He allegedly assaulted his 44-year-old female subordinate. On the 21st of February 2024, the complainant was directed to commence charge office duties on the 22nd of February 2024 at 0600 hours. Instead, the complainant reported for duty on the 22nd of February 2024 at 0800 hours.
The complainant together with another colleague was summoned to the accused person’s office. She was asked why she failed to report for duty on time and her explanation did not go well with the accused person. 
He allegedly hit her with fists all over the body and she fell to the ground. She ran to the administration block and he followed her and continued to assault her.
A Police report was made leading to the arrest of the accused person.

Siampongo was scheduled to appear in court on 31 May 2024 for judgment. The NPA, however, is yet to give an update on the case.

ZRP Officer In Charge Arrested For Assaulting Female Subordinate

A mushikashika crew, a driver and his conductor have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and assaulting two traffic police officers in Waterfalls, Harare.
The suspects, Kudakwashe Chigeregomo (23) and Emmanuel Denhere (18), both residents of Kuwadzana, kidnapped and assaulted Constables Godknows Maretawona (36) and Isaac Manjokoto (33), who are stationed at the Mbare Traffic Police Station.
The two police officers were at an intersection in Waterfalls, where they were deployed to maintain order at the busy intersection.
The cops arrested the pirate taxi driver and his conductor who were illegally carrying passengers in a grey Nissan AD van (AGE 6658) without an operator’s licence.
The two police officers boarded the car and ordered Kudakwashe to drive to Mbare Traffic Police Post at Masteps in Hopley.
Rather than complying with the police officers’ instructions, Kudakwashe drove the vehicle toward the east along Forbes Road, ultimately colliding with a precast wall of a house, which brought the vehicle to a halt.
Both Kudakwashe and Emmanuel attacked the two police officers, repeatedly striking them on the head and face with unidentified objects.
The assault was captured on video and shared widely on social media by an unidentified individual.
The cops eventually called for backup from their office and managed to subdue the suspects.
They sustained head injuries from the assault and were rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrest of the two men, adding that investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Mushikashika Crew Arrested For Kidnapping And Assaulting Cops In Harare

A 44-year-old female teacher at Mabunga Primary School in Mangwe is urgently requesting a transfer from the school. She faced threats of unspecified consequences from a man whose brother she testified against during a rape trial.
As reported by <a href="https://newsday.co.zw/southerneye/local/article/200025278/teacher-attacked-for-testifying-in-a-rape-case">Southern Eye</a>, Buhle Ncube, the man who threatened the teacher, appeared in court before Plumtree magistrate Joshua Nembaware on Thursday facing assault charges.
He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody awaiting sentencing.
Prosecuting, Seelstine Madziwa told the court that Sabelo Zhou( 44), a female teacher at Mabunga Primary School in Mangwe, was a witness in the rape case.
The court heard that on March 21 at around 6 pm, Zhou was at the schoolyard when Buhle arrived and confronted her for testifying against his brother, Andile.
Zhou, fearing Buhle, called her workmate Leo Moyo. Later, Buhle issued threats against the teacher. Said Buhle:

You are happy with what happened when you went to court and testified in the case of Andile and Zinhle, now he is convicted. This is not over you shall see what will happen to you.
</blockquote>
Zhou, who was now living in fear, reported the case to the police. She also applied for a transfer from the school.

Teacher Faces Threats For Testifying In Rape Trial

Individuals associated with Forever Associates Zimbabwe (FAZ), a ZANU PF affiliate led by Kudzai Chidewe, have been reported to the police for an alleged assault on Tawedzerwa Runyowa, the sole CCC councillor for Chivi District.
As reported by <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/faz-members-beat-councilor-at-school-meeting/">The Mirror</a>, the incident occurred in the presence of parents and school children. FAZ is an organization known for its involvement in violence and interference during the 2023 elections.
The FAZ allegedly attempted to prevent Runyowa from attending a school meeting at Madyangove Primary School.
The case has been officially reported at Chivi Police Station under RRB number 5770498.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa stated that he is not currently aware of the case.
Speaking to The Mirror, Runyowa said he met Kudzai Chidewu and two accomplices at the school last week. He said:

I was attending a meeting at Madyangove Primary and Kudzai Chidewu and his colleagues approached me. Kudzai is well known at the Growth Point.
He asked me why I was attending a school meeting. They dragged me into a bush and accused me of giving headaches to people and the ruling party. They assaulted me with open hands and were later refrained by the people.
They assaulted me in front of parents and my children who attend school at Madyangove.
They barred me from attending the meeting notwithstanding that I am a councillor and I have children at the school.

Runyowa is the sole elected opposition candidate in Chivi. He went head-to-head with Stoneshed Chikambure, the ZANU PF candidate and a prominent businessman.

FAZ Members Assault CCC Councillor At School Meeting

Former Masvingo mayor Collen Maboke (CCC) was involved in an accident with a ZANU PF vehicle on Saturday night.
ZANU PF youth chairman Darlington Mandebvu who allegedly became violent after the accident, was seriously injured after an oncoming vehicle came and hit him while he stood in the middle of the road.
<a href="https://masvingomirror.com/category/latest/">The Mirror</a> reported sources as saying Mandebvu was ferried to the hospital where he was admitted.
Another vehicle reportedly overturned on the same spot as it allegedly tried to avoid the ZANU PF vehicle which was parked in the middle of the road.
The accident happened along the Bikita-Masvingo Highway near Mutendi Church.
Maboke told The Mirror that he was on his way from his rural home near Nyika in Bikita.
He said the car was being driven by his wife Tariro Maboke and they had one other passenger, Simbarashe Matyeia relative. Said Maboke:

At around 8 PM, our vehicle sideswiped a ZANU PF vehicle coming from the direction of Masvingo which had encroached into our lane.
The vehicle made a U-turn and blocked our vehicle. The occupants who looked drunk disembarked and assaulted my wife, myself and Simbarashe.

Maboke said that during the furore, there was a speeding oncoming vehicle that tried to avoid them and overturned. 
Immediately behind it was another vehicle which could not avoid them and hit the ZANU PF youth chairman. It is suspected that he could have suffered broken legs.
Maboke’s vehicle only suffered a broken rearview mirror although he and his relatives sustained injuries to their faces after they were allegedly assaulted with empty bottles.
The matter was reported to the Police in Masvingo.

Former Masvingo Mayor's Vehicle Sideswipes ZANU PF Truck

Police have arrested three suspects in connection with a case of assault that took place in Concession on 18 February.
Police launched investigations after a video clip of the brutal assault circulated widely on social media platforms.
In a statement issued on Saturday, 02 March, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi identified the victim as Beven Zenderani (25).
Zenderai was assaulted by Hardlife Mananga (21), Luckson Ruzive (30), a 15-year-old boy, the main suspect identified as James Gumbi, and three other suspects who are at large.
The assailants accused Zenderai and his colleague of stealing sugarcane from Gumbi’s plot.
According to TellZim News, Gumbi is a former MDC Masvingo Provincial Chairperson who hails from Zaka and has a farm in Concessions. Reads the statement:

Reference is made to the Concession Assault incident which went viral on social media platforms recently.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that the complainant, Beven Zenderani (25) has been located and taken to a local hospital for medical examination. The incident occurred on 18th February 2024.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has since arrested three suspects:-

<li>Hardlife Mananga (21)</li>
<li>Luckson Ruzive (30)</li>
<li>A 15-year-old juvenile who has been released into the custody of his parents.</li>
</ul>
The Police has activated a team to arrest the main suspect, James Gumbi in Harare, while three other suspects are also being sought by the Police.
The complainant was picked up by some of the suspects while walking in the company of a friend near James Gumbi’s plot.
The suspects allege that the complainant and his friend had stolen the sugarcane they were eating from Gumbi’s plot.
The suspects called James Gumbi to the scene. They then took turns to assault the complainant.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will provide more details on the investigation once James Gumbi has been arrested.
Meanwhile, the Police commends the public for the valuable support and cooperation in the fight against criminal acts in the country.

Police Arrest 3 Suspects For Brutally Assaulting Sugarcane "Thief"

Former Finance Minister Tendai Biti has been found guilty of verbally assaulting a Russian national and investor Tatiana Aleshina in 2020.
Biti, who is a lawyer by profession and an opposition politician, was convicted after a full trial.
According to <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/former-finance-minister-biti-convicted-for-assaulting-foreign-investor/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, Biti denied the allegations arguing that the charge against him did not form a criminal offence.
Biti’s prosecution followed an incident at the Harare Magistrates Court, where there was an exchange of words between him and Aleshina.
Aleshina said she was about to leave the court gallery after the court session where she was one of the witnesses in criminal cases when she was assaulted by Biti. In her complaint, Aleshina said:

While attending to these matters at Harare Magistrates’ Court, I and my colleague at Pokugara Properties (Private) Limited have been victims of Mr Biti’s unsolicited verbal abuse and assaults which amount to gross professional misconduct.
It was clear to all people who were in the court gallery that Mr Biti took delight not only in verbally abusing me but in trying to intimidate me and felt that, as a woman and foreigner of Russian origins, I was a nonentity to him and that he would use every extrajudicial means to crush me or harm or destroy me for daring to be a witness in the criminal matter against his client.
I strongly feel Mr Biti also violated my rights as a woman by trying to show his man power over me by swearing and shouting at me in a way which clearly made me less human thereby humiliating me. His conduct in pointing against my face was a clear act of verbal assault.
</blockquote>
In convicting Biti, Harare magistrate Vongai Muchuchuti said that people cannot be allowed to call each other “idiots” and go scot-free. She said:
<blockquote>
What remains critical is that she went to receive medication. She was prescribed some medication although she refused to be admitted.
It is not in dispute that the accused and complainant had a verbal altercation on the day in question and the accused called the complainant a stupid idiot.
All the witnesses except the doctor have confirmed that the incident occurred.
The evidence that clearly stands out is that the accused pointed a finger at the complainant.
The State has managed to prove that the accused uttered the words which the accused confirmed himself.
All the witnesses are credible witnesses and the court has no reason to doubt their testimonies.
The evidence of all the state witnesses cannot be said to be worthless as alleged by the accused.
For those reasons, I find the accused person guilty.
</blockquote>
Biti is set to be sentenced at 10 AM on Tuesday and could be sentenced to a fine or up to 10 years or both.
His lawyer, Alec Muchadehama, said that they will appeal his conviction.

Biti Found Guilty Of Assault, He Called A Russian Citizen "Stupid Idiot"

Four women from Hatcliffe Extension, Harare, who brutally assaulted another woman and stripped her naked will learn their fate tomorrow, Friday, 16 February after they pleaded guilty to assault charges.
In total, five women were arrested for the assault, but one of the accused, Mitchel Kariwo (18), denied the charge.
Kariwo’s trial will start on the 20th of February 2024, while Zelpa Kanduza(19), Natasha Kanduza(17), Fortunate Tembo(25) and Olleyn Vinyungwi (18), will be sentenced tomorrow.
The five women appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on the 13th of February 2024 facing assault charges.
Allegations are that on 01 February 2024, the accused persons physically assaulted Alice Chaichai accusing her of having an affair with Mitchel Kariwo’s husband.
The accused persons dragged Chaichai out of her house and assaulted her using clenched fists, and open hands and kicked her until she became unconscious.
They also tore her clothes leaving her half-naked. A well-wisher then covered Chaichai with a piece of cloth.
Chaichai reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the Kanduza sibings, Tembo and Vinyungwi who all pleaded guilty to the charge.
The assault was recorded by bystanders and a video of the incident went viral on various social media platforms.

Hatcliffe Women Arrested For Assaulting "Husband Snatcher" To Be Sentenced

Eleven (11) Roman Catholic Church priests were allegedly assaulted by a security guard at Mbembi Farm in Mazowe after they trespassed into a mining area he was guarding, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200021410/catholic-priests-bashed-at-mine">NewsDay</a>.
The matter came to light at Concession Magistrates Courts recently where the security guard, Tsaurayi Kaunye, pleaded not guilty to 11 counts of assault.
The 48-year-old was remanded out of custody to 01 January 2024.
Prosecutor Munyaradzi Nengomasha told the court that on 11 September 2023, the complainants got lost and trespassed into the mine.
It is further alleged that Kaunye saw the clergymen and they did not give him a satisfactory explanation.
He then forced them out of their car and made them lie down before forcing them to roll several times.
Kaunye allegedly assaulted the priests with a log and they all sustained bruises.
Assault is a serious criminal offence that can lead to imprisonment for up to 10 years.
It occurs when a person intentionally or recklessly causes bodily harm to another person and involves physical attacks, threats, or acts that result in serious bodily injury.
According <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/opinion-amp-analysis/article/87616/assault-punishment-and-discipline">to a legal commentator</a>, assault is defined under Section 89 of the Criminal Codification Reform Act Chapter 9:23 as when a person physically attacks another person intending to cause that person bodily harm or does so even after realising that there is a real risk or possibility of bodily harm.
Threats to assault someone using words and gestures that are intended to inspire fear in the mind of the threatened person so that they believe physical force will be used against them are illegal.
Threats on their own are serious enough to result in a conviction and can carry similar penalties to actual assaults.
It is not an acceptable defence to plead that the threat was empty because it was impossible to carry out or that the accused could not carry out the assault. A mere threat to assault someone is a punishable crime.

11 "Trespassing" Roman Catholic Church Priests Beaten Up

A sitting ZANU PF councillor in Bindura was reportedly assaulted by a Bindura University of Science Education (BUSE) student during a campaign rally on 17 March this year.
According to the Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP), Bindura North Ward 12 Councillor, Wendile Machisi was assaulted by one Webester, who accused him of bedding his wife.
During the assault, Machisi did not retaliate but remained calm for fear he will be disqualified ahead of the ZANU PF primary elections. <a href="https://twitter.com/zppINFO/status/1639542607679303680">ZPP said:</a>

On 17 March, in Bindura North Ward 12, ZANU PF sitting councillor Wendile Machisi was assaulted by a Bindura University student identified as Webester during a campaign rally at the Progress Shopping Centre bus terminus.
The incident happened around 5 PM when Machisi was addressing residents ahead of the ruling party primary elections.
Machisi was slapped in the face by Webester who accused him of having an affair with his wife.
Machisi did not fight back but only warned his bodyguards to remain calm in fear of being disqualified.

This comes after ZANU PF Harare Provincial Commissar <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zanu-pf-official-barred-from-primaries-for-assaulting-zec-officials/">Kudakwashe Damson was barred from participating in the upcoming primary elections</a> for allegedly assaulting Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) officials who were on duty conducting voter education in Epworth recently.
ZANU PF is holding primary elections today, Saturday 25 March to select candidates for the party in the upcoming general elections.
ZANU PF Secretary for the Commissariat Mike Bimha on Friday said primary elections will be held in all provinces today except Masvingo and Midlands where they will conducted on Sunday, 26 March.

ZANU PF Councillor Assaulted During Campaign Rally

ZANU PF has cancelled the suspension and prohibition on Mashonaland West provincial youth league chairman, Tapiwa Masenda, <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/masendas-suspension-uplifted/">reported The Herald</a>.
ZANU PF national secretary for security Lovemore Matuke is expected to deploy a team to conduct investigations.
Masenda was suspended by the provincial executive committee (PEC) together with the provincial secretary for administration, Rudo Munyonga recently following several allegations of misconduct levelled against him.
He was barred from calling, officiating and addressing any meetings and entering party offices.
The cancellation of Masenda’s suspension will see him continue conducting his duties until the outcome of the investigations.

ZANU PF Revokes Suspension Of Official Who Assaulted Chinese Miner

ZANU PF Mashonaland West Province has resolved to suspend its Youth League chairman, Tapiwa Masenda, for allegedly assaulting a Chinese miner, leaving him badly bruised.
The assault reportedly followed a mining dispute at a gold-rich mine in Mhangura.
A Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) meeting held in Chinhoyi at the weekend chaired by ZANU PF provincial chairperson, Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, resolved to suspend Masenda.
In a statement, ZANU PF provincial secretary for publicity and information, Godknows Murambiwa said Masenda will undergo a disciplinary hearing. Said Murambiwa:

Cde Tapiwa Masenda, Mashonaland West Youth League provincial Chairman has been issued with a Prohibition Order following several allegations of misconduct levelled against him.
His actions as described by the provincial secretary for security do not have a place in ZANU PF under the new dispensation.

ZANU PF Mashonaland West Youth League Leader Assaults Chinese Miner

An Epworth woman was recently sentenced to a wholly suspended 16 months imprisonment by a magistrate after she poured boiling water on her husband’s genitals, accusing him of cheating.
The woman recently appeared before Harare Magistrate Stanford Mambanje, who found her guilty of assault.
Mambanje sentenced the accused to a wholly suspended 16 months imprisonment. Eight months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
The other eight months were set aside on condition that she performs 280 hours of community service at Epworth Local Board.
Allegations were that on 3 September 2021, the accused got angry with her husband, Tafadzwa Kachepa (33), while in bed and poured boiling water over his genitals. Kachepa was fast asleep.
The accused allegedly attacked her husband soon after the two had finished making love.
She had accused her husband of infidelity after discovering explicit messages from a suspected girlfriend.

Community Service For Woman Who Poured Boiling Water On Sleeping Hubby's Genitals

A member of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) has been convicted of assaulting a local businessman.
The leader of the National Alliance of Patriotic and Democratic Zimbabweans (NAPDR), Devine Mhambi-Hove (44), was fined $40 000 by a magistrate.
In addition, eight months of the sentence were suspended for the next five years on condition of good behaviour.
Hove (44) who is also chairperson of POLAD monitoring, implementation and evaluation committee, denied the assault charge but was convicted by Bulawayo magistrate Musaiwona Shotgame after a full trial.
The assault charge against Hove arose following a misunderstanding that he had with Trust Muteedzi, an entrepreneur.
Muteedzi owns Basement Bar located at Duly’s Building which is situated at the corner of 11th Avenue and Jason Moyo Street where he was also running a car wash business.
Prosecutors said on the day in question and at around 12 PM Muteedzi was sitting inside his bar and behind the counter when Hove entered.
Without provocation and for no apparent reason, Hove allegedly started assaulting Muteedzi with fists several times on his face.
The court further heard that Hove left the bar and later returned armed with a plank which he used to strike Muteedzi several times on his hand, neck and head.
The complainant sustained injuries as a result of the attack and was referred to the hospital for treatment.

POLAD Member Assaults Businessman

Suspected members of the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) and ruling ZANU PF activists reportedly assaulted senior journalist Godwin Mangudya while he was covering the ruling party’s Central Committee elections.
Mangudya was assaulted in the Harare suburb of Kuwadzana on 8 October 2022, according to <a href="https://zimbabwe.misa.org/media_violations/journalist-assaulted-and-forced-to-delete-footage-at-zanu-pf-meeting/">MISA Zimbabwe</a>.
Mangudya alerted MISA Zimbabwe that he was assaulted despite formally identifying himself and producing his press card.
He said he was detained for more than an hour, while the ZANU PF activists continuously demanded to further assault him.
CIO officers and ZANU PF security personnel reportedly confiscated Mangudya’s mobile phones and reset the gadgets resulting in him losing both his personal and work-related information.
On Friday, during a press briefing at the ZANU PF Headquarters in Harare, addressed by both the party’s Spokesperson, Christopher Mutsvangwa, and Political Commissar, Mike Bimha, the ruling party invited members of the media to cover its activities countrywide.

Journalist Forced To Delete Footage At ZANU PF Meeting

A 50-year-old man from Cowdray Park, Bulawayo was recently fined ZWL$24 000 by a magistrate for assaulting his wife, accusing her of infidelity and denying him sex.
Evans Farai Chitanda (50), who is employed as a general hand at Dominican Convent School, appeared before magistrate Shepherd Mjanja on Tuesday, facing one count of domestic violence.
Mnjanja warned Chitanda to desist from the conduct of violence in future and fined Chitando ZWL$24 000.
Prosecuting, Tafara Dzimbanete said on 11 September, Chitanda arrived home from work and began accusing his wife, Mary Chikumba (44) of infidelity.
Dzimbanhete assaulted Chikumba once with a fist on the cheek while further accusing her of denying him his conjugal rights.

Man (50) Assaults Wife For Denying Him Sex, Fined Z$24 000

The family of a 53-year-old Karoi woman who was assaulted by her neighbour following a dispute over trespassing cattle has accused the country’s justice system of corruption and incompetence.
Sipiwe Kasora (53), was assaulted by Denford Nyadzo (23) after she had complained that cattle belonging to the Nyadzo family had trespassed and destroyed her maize.
Kasora was severely assaulted and left with a sore head and recurring headaches. This prompted her to report the matter to the police resulting in Denford’s arrest.
Kasora’s son, Hardknocks Usayiwevu, is not happy with the way the courts handled the matter.
He told Pindula News that her mother appeared three times at the Karoi Magistrates Court over the issue but the matter was remanded further to the 20th of June.
Usayiwevu said that the 20th of June was the only day her mother was allowed in the court.
He said after she gave her own narration, the docket had a lot of ommissions and irregularities which were made by the investigating officer.
He said that the medical affidavit was also missing and her mother was then directed to go back and start afresh.
According to Usayiwevu, the ruling on Kasora’s assault case was delivered that very day in her absence and Denford was sentenced to five years imprisonment.
He said the jail term was wholly suspended on condition that Denford does not commit a similar offence in the next 6 months. Added Usayiwevu:

What hurts me the most is that the accused had the audacity to call my mother a lunatic, bludgeoned her face with his fist, undressed her and sat on her chest while beating her up.
</blockquote>
He said he feels the justice system has failed his family in freeing the suspect without giving him a custodial sentence.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has asked for “space” from the public including reporters to conduct investigations into the assault and torture of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Godfrey Karembera by police officers.
Karembera, better known as Madzibaba VeShanduko, was brutally assaulted while in custody at Harare Central Police Station on 17 March.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Saturday told The Standard the police is investigating the allegations but need “space”. Said Nyathi:

We made it clear from the onset that we are investigating allegations that Karembera was beaten by police officers and we will make sure that the law takes its course.
So we would like to appeal to the members of the public including the media to give us the space to conduct investigations.
We also want to try to avoid investigating the case while at the same time we are giving every bit of information to the media.
But I can assure you that everything is being done above board.

Karembera was arrested in central Harare last Thursday and charged for disorderly conduct and trying to deface Mbuya Nehanda’s statue.
He appeared before Harare magistrate Barbara Mateko at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals on Saturday.
Karembera is currently admitted at the hospital where he is receiving treatment following the torture and assault by police officers.
His lawyer, Doug Coltart said the magistrate refused to allow him to file an application challenging his placement on remand after the torture. Mateko said the application should be made on Monday.
