Four suspects appeared in court on Wednesday charged with malicious damage to property after allegedly attempting to burn down properties owned by ZANU PF-linked businessmen on March 28, 2025.
The four men—Last Matarutse, 40, Abel Jobe, 47, Kizito Chinhanga, 40, and Thomas Chanetsa—are all from Chitungwiza.
They were not asked to plead when they appeared before Harare Magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa. They were remanded in custody and advised to seek bail at the High Court.
The four men allegedly drove vehicles and set them on fire outside the offices of Wicknell Chivayo, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a DA petrol station allegedly linked to Tagwirei, and a business complex belonging to Mutapa Investment Fund CEO John Mangudya in Goromonzi.
The incidents occurred hours after war veteran Blessed Geza named Tagwirei and Chivayo as “criminals around the president.”
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on March 28, 2025, at around 2:15 AM, Matarutse “with intent to destroy the premises of IMC Communications company located at 42 Lanack Road, Avondale, drove his silver Toyota Corolla to the premises.”
Upon arrival, he allegedly parked his vehicle at the entrance gate and set it on fire, intending to destroy the entire building owned by Chivayo. The fire damaged the lighting system and a signpost inscribed “Starlink Authorised Dealer.”
It is alleged that, on the same day, Jobe went to Sano Complex in Goromonzi, driving a blue Nissan Sunny, which he parked outside.
His intention was reportedly to burn the complex, and he set his vehicle on fire. The vehicle exploded, but no damage occurred.
Chinhanga allegedly went to Tagwirei’s Sakunda Holdings at 11 Argyle Road, Avondale, driving a blue Nissan X-Trail.
Upon arrival, he allegedly parked his vehicle at the entrance gate and set it on fire, intending to destroy the entire premises.
The NPA further alleges that Chanetsa, on the same day and at the same time, went to DA Service Station at 486A Glennara Avenue, North Highlands, Harare, with the intention to burn down the premises. The NPA said:

Four Men Charged With Malicious Damage To Property Over Vehicle Fires At Chivayo, Tagwirei And Mangudya Offices

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into reports of petrol-driven vehicle fires in and around Harare.
According to ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi, the incidents took place at various business premises in Avondale, Highlands, Newlands, and Goromonzi during the early hours of Friday, 28 March 2025.
Nyathi said the vehicles were deliberately set on fire by the individuals driving them. After igniting the fires, the perpetrators swiftly jumped into accompanying vehicles and fled the scenes at high speeds. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has received reports of petrol-instigated burning of moving vehicles at business premises in Avondale, Highlands, Newlands and Goromonzi on 28th March 2025 between 12 midnight and 4 am.
This was done by suspects who were driving the vehicles. They quickly jumped onto accompanying vehicles and ran away.

Nyathi added that the ZRP is investigating the incidents and will provide more details in due course.

The police in Zimbabwe are investigating fires starting in cars in neighborhoods in Harare. Police say that the cars were intentionally set on fire by the people driving them. The incidents happened in Avondale, Highlands, Newlands, and Goromonzi in the early hours of March 28, 2025. After setting the cars on fire, the suspects quickly got into other cars and drove away fast. The police are looking into the incidents and will give more information later.

Police Investigate Burnings Of Vehicles In Harare Suburbs

The Zimbabwe Amalgamated Railway Workers Union (ZARWU) has strongly condemned the suspected arson attacks on National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) premises in Bulawayo and Harare.
According to NRZ, a fire on September 16, 2024, at the Bulawayo mechanical workshops destroyed 44 decommissioned passenger coaches. On September 18, three coaches were set ablaze at the Harare shunters’ complex.
In a statement released on Friday, September 20, ZARWU General Secretary Nhamo Bepete characterised the incidents as well-coordinated acts of arson. He said:

These two incidents appeared to be well-coordinated arson attacks on this national asset. It must be noted that for whatever reason these attacks are meant for, ZARWU condemns in the strongest terms such shameful, archaic and barbaric acts meant to harm our national asset. In fact, such retrogressive acts must not be allowed to take place in our lifetime, not again.
We strongly believe that these attacks are meant to water down the achievements that the NRZ Board and Management have made in their quest to recapitalise and modernise our Railway system.
Furthermore, the Railway Industry has been enjoying a generally peaceful environment under the stewardship of the General Manager Ms. R Zinyanduko who has from the time of her appointment utilised social dialogue with social partners to develop the Railways.
As workers, we want to re-affirm our resolve and commitment to protect this national asset which was created out of our forefathers’ blood and sweat.
Thousands of workers draw their livelihoods from NRZ and surely thousands of workers can not just stand aside and watch this existential threat to our livelihoods unfolding without taking appropriate lawful actions to assist the police in their investigations.

The Workers Union is very upset about fires at train stations in Zimbabwe. They say it was on purpose to harm the train system. They think it's bad and want the police to find who did it and punish them. The Union thinks the train system has been doing well and doesn't want it ruined. Workers Union Condemns Suspected Arson Attacks On NRZ Premises

In a statement released on Thursday, September 19, NRZ Board Chairman Mike Madiro detailed two significant incidents.

NRZ Suspects Coordinated Arson In Recent Fire Incidents At Premises

Less than a week after a devastating fire destroyed a dormitory at Matopo High School, another blaze has gutted another building at the institution. The school is run by the Brethren in Christ Church.
The initial fire incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, July 5th, when a fire broke out in the boys’ dormitory.
This resulted in the complete destruction of property, including 52 school trunks, 52 beds, students’ uniforms, and extra clothing.
In the latest incident, a fire erupted on Tuesday morning at a building where some extra mattresses were being stored. However, the school authorities were able to quickly extinguish the fire.
In a message to parents, Sibanda confirmed the latest fire incident and reassured them that the situation was brought under control swiftly. Reads the message:

Another unfortunate incident befell us in the early hours of yesterday where a small room, an extension of a Form Three hostel currently not housing any children but housing extra mattresses caught fire.
This time we were able to put out the fire quickly as fire extinguishers were availed in no time.
Sibanda said there is a huge probability of arson by one of the learners, based on preliminary investigations. He said:
One child reports that he saw a boy carrying fire using a cup and as soon as that boy got behind the building, a fire started.
Intentions of this arson are yet to be established through thorough investigation. What happened dear parents is simple mischief by our learners.

Sibanda revealed that during the winter months, the school’s electric geysers have not been performing up to expectations, making it difficult for students to access warm bathing water.
To address this, the school has been using firewood to heat the water, and this temporary solution has been working well.
However, Sibanda acknowledged that it would not be surprising if the fire that gutted the entire boys’ dormitory the previous week was caused by negligence on the part of the students.
He sought to assure parents and guardians that the school was working diligently to prevent any further incidents and to make the hostels a safe living environment for the students.

Mischievous Learners Cause Second Fire In 5 Days At Matopo High School

A 46-year-old man from Gweru, Midlands Province, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Gweru Magistrates’ Court for assault and malicious damage to property.
The accused, Joseph McCarthy, set fire to several properties in the neighbourhood after a colleague he was drinking beer with made a joke that he did not appreciate.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), however, did not reveal the nature of the joke.
McCarthy was charged with one count of assault and two counts of malicious damage to property when he was arraigned before the Gweru Magistrates’ Court.
The State proved that on 17 April 2024, McCarthy and the complainant’s brother, Rodreck Munyanyiwa were drinking at Woodlands Shops in Gweru when the latter made a joke that the accused did not take well.
Rodreck then left and went home. Still boiling with anger, McCarthy later proceeded to the complainant Munyaradzi Munyanyiwa’s residence to look for Rodreck but could not find him.
McCarthy then attacked Munyaradzi who suffered an eye injury but managed to escape leaving the accused person in his room.
McCarthy set fire to Munyaradzi’s blanket and completely destroyed the room. The fire spread next door and burnt down Rebecca Nyathi’s 13-roomed house.
The accused fled from the scene, passed through the Woodlands Phase 1 Shops, and told a security guard what he had done.
Munyaradzi teamed up with his neighbours to carry out a citizen’s arrest on McCarthy, whom they subsequently handed to the police.
The value of the damaged property is USD22 415.
McCarthy was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment of which 3 years were suspended. A further 4 years were suspended on condition of restitution of US$21 000 to Rebecca Nyathi and 1 year suspended on condition of restitution of US$755 to Munyaradzi Munyanyiwa.
He will serve two years effectively if he restitutes Nyathi with $21,000 and Munyaradzi with $755.

Gweru Man Burns Down Two Houses Over A Bar Joke

A man from the Highfield suburb of Harare sustained severe burns and is currently receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Hospital after he set himself alight while trying to kill his family.
<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/man-sets-himself-on-fire-in-attempt-to-kill-family-in-arson-attack/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> reported that Desmond Chendambuya (40), who resides at ZRP Highfield, had a heated argument with his wife before trying to set the house on fire.
Chendambuya’s two stepchildren aged 17 and 26, his daughter (5), and his wife escaped through a window.
He was injured when a gas tank he ignited burst during the arson attack.
He was recently remanded from his hospital bed and is being charged with attempted murder.
Harare Magistrate Donald Ndirowei presided over his case.
According to court papers, Chendambuya arrived home around midnight on 04 November 2023.
He was then involved in a fight with his wife Melody Ncube and demanded that she unlock her phone which she refused.
Chendambuya allegedly grabbed his wife’s phone and smashed it against the floor. Said prosecutors:

A misunderstanding arose between the two and the accused took his daughter, aged 5, out of the dining room, closed the door and locked it from inside.
The accused then went into the kitchen, and opened a 9kg gas tank whilst the complainants were inside the room.
He took a cigarette lighter from his pocket and ignited it causing the fire to break out from the gas tank, filling the whole room.

Chendambuya then jumped outside through the window from the second floor of his flat.
He fled from the scene before he was apprehended a few hours later.
The accused was found in agony having sustained fractures from the jump and burns injuries.
He was ferried to Parirenyatwa Hospital for medical attention.
The damaged property includes a refrigerator, sofa, electric cables, the ceiling, window panes, and kitchen utensils.

Harare Man (40) Sets Himself On Fire Trying To Kill His Wife And Stepchildren

A wildfire destroyed hundreds of citrus trees at a farm owned by self-exiled former ZANU PF Politburo member Saviour Kasukuwere in Mazowe.
Posting on X on Tuesday, Kasukuwere accused the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) of failing to enforce a High Court order to remove illegal occupants from his far. He said:

It never rains but pours: A huge fire has destroyed my prime citrus plant at Concorpia Farm, Mazowe.
Against all legal efforts to remove the invader, the ZRP has refused to enforce an HC order.
For now, we are yet to ascertain the motive behind this arson attack.

Speaking to <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/kasukuwere-loses-100s-of-citrus-trees-in-farm-fire-blames-mnangagwa/">ZimLive</a> from South Africa where he lives in exile, the former ZANU PF Political Commissar claimed the “arson attack” was part of efforts to drive him out of the farm. He said:

Kasukuwere’s farm was seized by the government and allocated to a Mashonaland Central war veterans’ leader Ephanos Mudzimunye.
The High Court ordered Mudzimunye to leave the farm, but he refused, claiming that he was allocated the land by the late Lands, Agriculture, Water, and Rural Resettlement minister, Perrance Shiri.

Fire Destroys Citrus Trees At Kasukuwere's Farm In Mazowe

The death toll from an arson attack that occurred at Mafararikwa Village, Marange on Saturday, 29 July, has risen to five after a child who escaped the fire through a window succumbed to her injuries.
In a Press Statement released on 31 July 2023, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said a 43-year-old man, who was armed with a knife, barged into a house where his niece, Violet Muchimwe (35), and four children were sleeping.
The man, Tonderai Muchimwe, then demanded to be intimate with his niece who turned him down resulting in a scuffle.
After Violet had bolted out of the house, Tonderai set the house on fire and died in the house alongside three of Violet’s children.
The four were burnt beyond recognition whilst Takunda Mundoko sustained burns all over the body after escaping out of the room through the window.
In an update on Monday evening, Police said Takunda, unfortunately, succumbed to her injuries. Police said:

Death Toll From Murder-Suicide In Marange Rises To Five

A Marange man killed himself and three minors, after his niece, who is the mother of the children, spurned his sexual advances.
Police said Tonderai Muchimwe entered a house the children were sleeping in, and set it on fire.
He died in the fire alongside the three children after their mother had fled from the scene.
In a statement released on 31 July 2023, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the incident occurred around midnight on Saturday.
Asst Comm Nyathi revealed that Police are also investigating other fire incidents that occurred in Harare, Mazowe and Shurugwi. He said:

In an unrelated incident, three family members died after a thatched bedroom they were sleeping in was set on fire by an unknown suspect on Sunday in Muzarabani. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

In a related incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating circumstances surrounding the death of Emily Kamugiya (65), Letina Chimuka (70) and Maxwell Josi (12) after the thatched bedroom they were sleeping in was set on fire by an unknown suspect on 30th July 2023 at Chitimbe Village, Muzarabani.
The police has established that Letina Chimuka was staying with the other victims after being chased away by her son from St Alberts area on allegations of witchcraft in which she was said to be causing the illness of her grandchild.
Investigations conducted by the police so far have not linked the two (2) fire incidents to political violence.

Asst Comm Nyathi said Police are investigating a case of malicious damage to property in Harare and another arson attack in Shurugwi were 10 huts were set alight. He said:

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that investigations are still in progress in relation to Brighton Mazhindu’s report at ZRP St Mary’s, Harare and another report by Leonard Kasanhai of Musonza Village A, Chiweshe over malicious damage to property by suspects who are yet to be identified.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police also confirms six (6) reports from Hanke area, Tongogara, Shurugwi where complainants, with some not inclined towards any political party, had their ten (10) houses burnt on 29th July 2023 during the night.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has so far arrested Edson Madhuveko and Edwin Madhuveko in connection with this case. The two suspects were seen running away from the burnt huts scene.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police warns criminal elements who are taking advantage of the current election mood in the country to settle marital and family scores that the law will ruthlessly deal with them.
On the other hand, the Zimbabwe Republic Police warns political parties to counsel supporters and resolve either inter-party or intra-party disputes without resorting to violence.
We also appeal to politicians to tell their members the truth on incidences to avoid misleading the nation.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police once again reiterates that the law will take its course on anyone involved in cases of political violence despite one’s stature, identity or political affiliation.

Seven People Killed In Weekend Of Arson Attacks Across Zimbabwe

A Chivi businessman reportedly ran amok in August this year and torched about 25 homes of villagers he suspected of bewitching him.
The villagers in Chivi’s Sese area are now living in fear of the businessman, Thomas Chapeta, following his return from South Africa.
Chapeta allegedly destroyed villagers’ homes on 12 and 22 August with the help of an armed mob.
A villager who spoke to NewZimbabwe.com on condition of anonymity, said Chivi residents are still living in fear that Chapeta and his accomplices might terrorise them again. Said the villager:

He came on the 12th of August with a team of more than 50 people and beat up villagers.
The gang was armed with guns, machetes and hammers beating up people even the elderly.
</blockquote>
Some of the assailants have been arrested but Chapeta, who owns a drilling company and is a son-in-law to Zion Christian Church (ZCC) leader Nehemiah Mutendi, remains a free man.
Chapeta has been seen attending some of the ZCC functions and is said to be using his relationship with Mutendi and his ZNAU PF connections to evade arrest. Said another villager:

It is now more than four months. The case keeps on dragging with postponement. We suspect underhanded practices.
Failure to arrest the chief culprit during and after disturbances raises eyebrows.

Chivi Villagers Living In Fear Of Businessman

Wheat valued at close to US$800 000 was destroyed by fire in 20 separate incidents last week, with authorities and farmers putting the blame on arsonists in most of the cases.
Agritex extension officers deployed to assess the damage caused by the fires noted that most of the fires started inside the wheat fields thus pointing to possible sabotage.
Chief director for Agriculture and Rural Development Advisory Services, Obert Jiri, said:

After our extension officers’ inspections, it was clear that in most cases, the fires were not from the veld but started infield, pointing to possible sabotage, and we want our farmers to be on the lookout.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Farmers Union executive director, Paul Zakariya, said the high number of wheat fields that have been affected by fires this year is unusual. Said Zakariya:

This is the first-ever season we have had such high numbers of fires in wheat fields.
There is suspicion that some disgruntled elements might want to disrupt the projected bumper harvest.
We need to act collectively to counter such people.

Pieter Gertenbach, a Mvurwi farmer, lost a 35-hectare wheat field to fire at his Pembi Chase Farm.
The crop was supported by the Presidential Inputs Scheme and Gertenbach believes the fire was an act of sabotage. He said:

This is an act of sabotage, no doubt about it. Some people are deliberately trying to fight the President’s efforts to improve agriculture.
This was not a wild veld fire that started out of nowhere; the fire started from within the field.

Benedict Chagumuka of Machewe Farm in Mvurwi who lost 15 hectares of wheat to a fire last week also claimed the fire started in the middle of the field. He said:

Fire Destroys US$800k Wheat, Farmers Blame Saboteurs

The government is considering amending the Environmental Management Act so that people who carelessly start veld fires are punished severely.
Speaking in the Senate on Thursday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa said that Cabinet is seized with the matter. She said:

I understood what the chief said that traditional courts deal with these cases but when cases like those of arson are brought to the magistrates’ courts, they are not dealt with in a just manner, especially considering that such people would have destroyed people’s lives and property.
This Act will have to be looked into so that it comes back to the August House to ascertain whether the law is prohibitive, but we need to ascertain whether the law is punitive enough so that when people have participated in arson, then they will be deterred by heavy sentences.
I am going to engage the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Honourable (Ziyambi) Ziyambi so that the Act should be looked at.
Even the Attorney-General should look at the law and the law will be brought to this august House so that it is reviewed or amended. Cabinet is really seized with the matter.
We spoke at length concerning the issue and the suggestion will be taken up to Cabinet but we emphasise and we understand this issue.

Arsonists To Get Stiffer Sentences

A mentally-challenged man allegedly set several homes on fire in Mpofu Village, Lupane in Matabeleland North Province leaving the owners of the torched homes stranded.
Among the four victims of the nocturnal arson attack were an 80-year-old granny and a 69-year-old woman identified as Concilia Moyo.
Moyo told <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/families-stranded-after-arson-attack/">The Sunday News</a> that she returned to Lupane from Chinhoyi three years ago following the death of her husband. She said:

It was just after 9 PM when we had retired to bed that I heard something burning my leg and as I woke up I saw the house engulfed in white smoke. I woke my sister up and told her the hut was on fire.
I then rushed to open the door while my sister took a six-year-old child who was sleeping with us.
The fire then engulfed the whole house and we couldn’t even grab a single thing.
We lost everything, two double beds, two wardrobes, as well as food. I work at the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme so I had been given my food allocation that included 8 x 50 kilogrammes of maize, 2 x 50 kilogrammes of wheat as well as everything we used at home.
These include kitchen utensils. I had just bought two door frames and window frames from the proceeds of the Bubi-Lupane Irrigation Scheme.
I had also placed an order for bricks and the US$150 which was reserved for the payment got burnt inside.

Thembinkosi Nyathi (19) and Nigel Mpofu were the heroes of the night after they broke a door and dragged Gogo MaPhiri (80) from the burning house.
Meanwhile, Moyo said the villagers are in need of shelter as the rainy season is fast approaching and they do not have roofs over their heads.

"Mentally-challenged" Man Torches Homesteads, Leaves Villagers Stranded

A 21-year-old man from Matinyenya Village under Chief Nhema in Shurugwi has been arrested after he allegedly torched four homesteads for no apparent reason.
The suspect, Tinashe Machando, is also accused of unlawful entry and theft.
He appeared before Shurugwi Magistrate Percy Mukumba on Tuesday last week facing arson, unlawful entry and theft charges.
Prosecutor Tafadzwa Makotore told the court that sometime in April this year Machando entered Clever Zireva’s shop at Hanke Business Center and took away cellphones, Bluetooth speakers and 35 batteries.
He was allegedly caught selling the items at Tongogara Growth Point.
On the second count, Machando allegedly set Etina Zireva’s kitchen hut on fire before running away.
He allegedly entered another house through the window and stole US$50.
Zireva told <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/possessed-young-man-burns-down-neighbours-houses/">The Mirror</a> that she suspects Machando is possessed by evil spirits as he burns down people’s homes for no reason. She said:

I think this young man is possessed by evil spirits. My hut which he burnt is the fourth one and his parents are busy preparing to renovate the house for me.
He moves around stealing and burning people’s houses for no reason. After setting houses on fire, he comes the next morning to confess and apologise.

"Possessed" Shurugwi Man Burns Down Neighbours’ Houses

A Grade 10 learner has been arrested after he allegedly set a car on fire at Northbury Secondary School in Durban in KwaZulu-Natal earlier this week.
A spokesperson for Mountain Rise SAPS, Warrant Officer Pancheal Singh, said the teenager was arrested on Thursday night. He said:

He was released into the care of his guardian. He is due in court on September 14 and faces a charge of malicious injury to property.

The boy allegedly poured petrol on the deputy principal’s Hyundai i30 after she chastised him for having a cell phone at school, which is against the school’s policy. She also confiscated the cellphone.
DA spokesperson for Education, Dr Imran Keeka urged parents to play their part in preventing such attacks. Said Keeka:

SA Grade 10 Student Burns Deputy Principal’s Car Over Cellphone Confiscation

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) is investigating the cause of a fire that briefly flared up at their Kurima House offices on Thursday before it was quickly extinguished.
Some reports had suggested that the fire could have been started by an electrical fault or deliberately by someone who wanted to destroy some documents.
In a statement, ZIMRA’s Corporate Affairs Executive, Gladman Njanji, said there was no loss of life or injuries. He said:

ZIMRA wishes to inform stakeholders and the public that there has been a fire incident on one of the floors at our Kurima House offices in Harare, which has since been contained.

ZIMRA Investigates Fire Incident At Its Offices

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is treating a fire that destroyed cotton lint at Checheche Growth Point in Chipinge South recently as a suspected case of malicious damage to property (MDP).
At least 1.2 million kilograms of cotton lint with an estimated value of US$2.5 million was destroyed by fire at a ginning site at Checheche growth point in Chipinge South on Monday morning.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said an unidentified suspect left a note threatening to cause more fire at the scene where more than 5 300 cotton bales were burnt.
A note addressed to one CC was found by the tragedy site threatening to cause more fire if the suspect fails to receive his or her money. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

Police are investigating a suspected case of malicious damage to property (MDP) following a note found at the site where 5300 cotton bales were burnt to ashes in Checheche.
The incident took place at 0327hrs when a truck driver loading cotton bales parked his vehicle to make a call.

A note was found addressed to CC threatening to cause more fire if the suspect was not going to be paid his or her money within five days.

Chipinge Cotton Arsonist Threatens To Strike Again

A fire that destroyed cotton lint worth millions of dollars in Chipinge on Monday might have been started by disgruntled workers who were recently relieved of their duties, reported Chipinge Times.
The fire broke out at Agri Value Chain Company based in Checheche popularly known as Parrogate on Monday Monday, destroying the “white gold”.
Chipinge South legislator, Enock Porusingasi, confirmed the fire incident during an interview with Chipinge Times, saying investigations to establish the cause of the fire were ongoing. He said:

The unfortunate incident happened around 3 am today. The fire started in the storage area where lint which is ready for dispatch is kept after being processed.
The companies whose cotton lint has been burnt include Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco), Southern Cotton, Consolidated Cotton of Zimbabwe, Shawasha Cotton.
These companies buy their cotton here in Chipinge and some in Chiredzi. They then bring the cotton for ginning at Parrogate.

He further said the fire was only controlled in the afternoon after interventions by Greenfuel Pvt Ltd which provided fire tenders.
Meanwhile, Chipinge Times quoted a source as having said that the fire might have been an act of arson by disgruntled former employees. Said a source:

Some posters suspected to have been designed by workers demanding their dues were seen strewn near the company.

Disgruntled Former Workers Suspected Of Burning Cotton Worth Millions

The Cotton Company of Zimbabwe (Cottco) on Monday lost 1.2 million kilogrammes of cotton valued at about US$2.5 million to a fire outbreak that occurred at one of its toll ginning sites at Checheche growth point in Chipinge South.
The fire broke out in the wee hours of yesterday and the inferno was still raging by afternoon as firefighters continued with their efforts to completely extinguish the fire.
Cottco managing director Pious Manamike confirmed the incident, saying the cause of the fire had not been ascertained. He said:

Preliminary assessments indicate that the company has lost about 1 221 000 kg of cotton lint that was ready for export with an estimated value of US$2 500 000. A forklift was also lost in the inferno.
The fire was detected by a truck driver near the ginnery who immediately alerted the guards and management.
Fire tenders from Green Fuels and Hippo Valley were called in to assist extinguish the fire.
The fire-fighting operation was hampered by strong winds that were being experienced in the area at that time.
The cause of the fire has not yet been established and investigations are underway.

Cotton Lint Worth US$2.5 Million Burnt To Ashes In Chipinge

An axe-wielding Bulawayo man set his family home on fire following a dispute with his mother claiming that he was the owner of the property.
Trevor Nyamakawo (29) torched his family home in the Queenspark suburb and threatened to axe his family members if they resisted his orders to vacate the house.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and said they were treating the case as malicious damage to property. He told CITE:

I can confirm that we received a report of malicious damage to property. The accused person, who is still on the run, had a dispute with his mother.
He was claiming that the house they are staying in belongs to him and they should remove their property.
He threatened to kill his mother. The mother then went and made a report to the police. When she returned around 14:30 PM they found the house already in flames.
A fire brigade was called and they put out the fire. The value of the lost property is yet to be established.

Trevor’s mother, Molly, narrated that her son had only returned home on Tuesday after being in South Africa for two years. She said:

Trevor is my oldest son. After my husband’s death some years ago I raised my children on my own.
Yesterday (Thursday) morning he was smoking dagga and cigarettes in the house.
I then rebuked him, reminding him that we have a newborn baby in the house, so smoking would affect it.

She said Trevor did not take this well so he started shouting at everyone, throwing them out of the house and threatening to kill them.
Molly said after her first attempt to calm him down she rushed to the police to report him but the police did not do much to assist her. She said:

He calmed down a bit after I had talked to him. I was still worried about his behaviour so I rushed to the police station.
They gave me one officer who was dressed in civilian clothes to accompany me but when we got home he ridiculed him and started his threats all over again.
I ran back to the police and they gave me two more uniformed officers. When we arrived, he was more violent than before.
The officers got confrontational with him, I warned them several times against it because I know how he is when he gets angry but they didn’t listen to me.

After the harsh verbal exchange with the police officers, Trevor reportedly threatened to burn the house down and the officers told him to go ahead and that was when he set the house ablaze and climbed on top of the roof. Added Molly:

He was there. On top of the roof. He was daring us to come into the house. The police restrained everyone from going into the yard.
There are some neighbours who were offering to help but the police barred them. They really let me down.
I got no help from them. I watched my house burn down.

Woman Says Police "Let Us Down" After Son Sets Family House Ablaze

A villager from Mutasa District, Manicaland Province has left fellow villagers in shock after demanding his lobola back from his in-laws before burning his mother’s kitchen hut to ashes.
Knowledge Manhanga (31) from Domborutinhira went berserk following an argument with his wife over a domestic issue.
He appeared before Mutare magistrate Rumbidzai Kabasa facing two counts of arson and was found guilty. He was expected to be sentenced today.
Prosecutors told the court that that sometime this month, the accused had an argument with his wife (not named in the State papers) over a domestic issue.
Manhanga’s wife went back to her parents. On the same day at around 9 pm, Manhanga followed his wife at his father-in-law, Charles Kombedzai’s homestead and demanded his lobola back.
The State further alleges that after an hour, an irate Manhanga set ablaze his in-laws’ kitchen hut, destroying a set of sofas, 23 live chickens, a wheelbarrow and door frames all worth $37 400.
The accused also burnt his mother Rosemary Manhanga’s kitchen to ashes in her absence.
It is not yet known why he set ablaze the kitchen.

A Kadoma man, Evans Chikowore, who unleashed a reign of terror in his neighbourhood over a week ago, has been arrested.
According to police, Chikowore (29), of Village 1 Luwana Farm, Kadoma, axed his father and set a neighbour’s house ablaze before raping a woman in a maize field.
He was not asked to plead when he appeared before Kadoma resident magistrate Shingirai Mutiro facing murder, rape and arson charges.
Mutiro remanded Chikowore in custody to July 30 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court.

Waiter’s seven-year-old son tried to escape, but was axed by Chikowore and sustained a deep cut on the head.
Chikowore then assaulted his aunt with an axe before going to another house where he dragged a woman into a maize field and raped her before robbing her of US$40.

Kadoma Murderer, Rapist And Arsonist Arrested

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched a manhunt for a man from Kadoma, Evans Chikore, who unleashed a reign of terror in his neighbourhood last week on Friday.
In a statement this Monday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the suspect fatally axed his father and aunt, burnt several huts and raped and robbed a neighbour before disappearing.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Evans Chikore, a male adult aged 29 of Village 1 Luwana Farm, Kadoma.
The suspect is being sought for two counts of murder, rape, robbery and malicious damage to property which occurred on 9 July 2021 in Kadoma.
On the said date, Evans Chikore who was armed with an axe went to his parents’ homestead in Marimari South where he attacked his father aged 61 with stones before he fatally struck him several times on the head and left shoulder with an axe for unknown reasons.
The suspect threatened to kill his mother and set on fire four round huts and a shade at the homestead.
After the incident, the suspect went to a neighbouring plot where he threatened to kill his parents’ neighbour, accusing him of previously reporting him to the police and causing his incarceration for an assault case in which he assaulted the complainant’s son.
The complainant managed to escape and the suspect struck the complainant’s son once on the forehead with an axe before setting ablaze two thatched huts at the homestead.
The suspect then proceeded to his aunt’s homestead, where he met his aunt and fatally struck her several times on the head with an axe before setting ablaze the kitchen hut and a Ford Ranger vehicle.
The suspect headed to another neighbouring plot where he robbed the complainants US$10 before dragging one of the complainants to a nearby maize field where he raped her once after threatening to strike her with an axe if she resisted.
After raping her, the suspect went to her house where he stole US$40 and a blanket. He set ablaze a hut that was used as a granary and subsequently burning property inside which include, 5 tonnes of maize, 20 buckets of sorghum and 10 bags of cement.

Wanted Kadoma Man Leaves Trail Of Destruction

A Shurugwi man set the family’s two-roomed house on fire after he was thoroughly beaten by his wife during a fistfight last month.
Jabulani Ncube (38) of plot 6 Manokore Farm in Shurugwi was overpowered by his wife Susan Nhongo (41) resulting in him setting the house alight and destroying $175 000 worth of property in the process.
Ncube pleaded for leniency when he appeared before Magistrate Percy Mukumba at Shurugwi Magistrate Court charged with malicious damage of property.
He said he decided to burn the family house after he lost a physical fight with his wife following an argument.
Prosecutors said Ncube who was drunk on the fateful day approached his wife and shouted obscenities.
This resulted in a vicious fistfight which he lost resulting in him setting the house alight.

Shurugwi Man Burns Family Home After Losing Fistfight To Wife

A three-roomed house belonging to MDC-Alliance spokesperson for Chikomba West Constituency Noel Kureva was set alight on Saturday afternoon destroying property worth US$3 000, Masvingo Mirror reports.
The incident happened at around 3 PM when Kureva and his family were away.
Kureva confirmed the incident and he suspects an act of violence from ZANU PF activists.
The matter was reported at Beatrice Police Station under RRB number 4321996.
MDC-Alliance Youth Secretary for Chikomba West Constituency Nyemudzai Mubayiwa told the publication that Kureva has been receiving threats from the ruling party.
Mubayiwa said ZANU PF supporters wanted Kureva to vacate a plot he occupies allegedly because he is a member of an opposition party.
He expressed concern at the increasing number of cases of political violence in Mash East, the hotbed of political killings in previous elections.
However, ZANU PF Chairman for Mashonaland East province Michael Madanha distanced the ruling party from the incident which he said was against the Zimbabwean culture. Madanha said:

MDC Alliance Official's House Torched

A man from Gweru, Midlands Province, has handed himself to the police after locking seven family members, including his wife and kids, in a house before petrol-bombing it after a domestic dispute.
Darlington Miti (42), reportedly attempted to kill himself by consuming poison some two weeks before committing the dastardly crime.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Inspector, Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident which occurred in Raylands suburb Gweru on Thursday night. He said:
<blockquote>The suspect, Darlington Miti (42) has since surrendered himself to the police and is now in custody. He is now facing attempted murder charges and will appear in court soon.</blockquote>
Insp Mahoko said property was destroyed in the attempted arson attack while all family members escaped unhurt.
Miti’s wife Chipo Mafunda, her two children from a previous marriage, her 3-year child with Miti and two other family members were in the house when he set it on fire. Added Insp Mahoko:
<blockquote>It is said Miti had a misunderstanding with his wife on Wednesday night. He then left the house only to return home around 2 am the following morning armed with a five-litre container full of petrol.
He then sprinkled the fuel around the house before setting the house on fire together with the wife’s car which was parked outside.</blockquote>
Mafunda told The Herald that they have been having some problems in their marriage and recently Miti wrote a suicide note and later consumed termite poison.
She said they rushed him to the hospital and he spent two weeks in the intensive care unit.
Mafunda said she is into some business and was fending for the family but Miti was now accusing her of infidelity.

The incident occurred in Highview suburb, Chivhu. The woman is said to have later surrendered herself to the police.

A Harare Magistrate has ordered Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga to pay more than RTGS$50 000 to a Mazowe man as compensation for damages to his vehicle, which was burnt to ashes in 2019 by some law enforcement agents, who were evicting illegal miners at Jumbo Mine in Mazowe, in Mashonaland Central province.
Philemon Jijita, who runs a tuckshop at Masasa Farm in Mazowe sued Matanga and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe in December 2019 for payment of damages to his property after some ZRP members burnt down his immobile Nissan Hi-Rider vehicle in May 2019, which was parked at the farm as it had some flat tyres.
Jijita’s vehicle caught fire when ZRP members burnt some housing structures, cabins and some grass structures that were close to his car.
His pleas to restrain the police officers fell on deaf ears as the law enforcement agents ordered him to move away.
With the assistance of Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, Jijita sued Matanga and Kazembe demanding compensation for the damage caused to his vehicle.
During the trial before Magistrate Dhliwayo, Chinopfukutwa argued that Jijita suffered severe shock and trauma at witnessing his vehicle being wantonly burnt down by ZRP officers without reasonable justification.
This resulted in Magistrate Dhliwayo ordering Matanga and Kazembe to pay RTGS$56 640 as compensation for special damages to Jijita’s property.
Through instituting such anti-impunity claims against state actors who include police officers, who often violate human rights of other people under the guise of acting within the realm of the law, ZLHR does so to deter and discourage such violations.
