Zimbabwe Mines and Mining Development Minister <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Winston_Chitando">Winston Chitando</a> has said the government is confident it will produce six million carats and generate US$1 billion from the diamond industry next year in line with set targets.
The government plans to grow the mining industry to US$12 billion by next year.
The diamond sector is projected to contribute US$1 billion; Gold is expected to generate US$4 billion, while platinum is expected to bring in US$3 billion.
When the plan was launched in October 2019, mining contributed only US$2.7 billion to economic growth and to US$5.3 billion last year.
In 2021, diamond production stood at four million carats, up from 1.8 million carats recorded in 2018.
Chitando told <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/zim-confident-of-producing-6m-carats-next-year">The Sunday Mail Business</a> that the set target in the production of precious stones was on the back of expansion projects, as well as value addition and beneficiation initiatives in the sector.
Speaking after officiating at the inaugural gemstones conference organised by the Zimbabwe School of Mines in Harare last week, Minister Chitando said:
<blockquote>
All I can say is we are achieving US$1 billion next year . . .
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the diamond industry became subdued. I would rather focus on the future and on the fact that we are going to do over six million carats next year, through which we will achieve our US$1 billion.
On the diamond side, we are very clear in terms of the gemology centre, value addition and the arrangement between ZCDC (Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company) and Aurex, and various other value addition initiatives which are being undertaken.

Current projects under expansion and development include Alrosa, Anjin and Murowa Diamond.
Meanwhile, government critics say while Zimbabwe is endowed with vast natural resources and is host to more than 40 different minerals in the categories of precious metals, base metals, industrial metals and gemstones, the resources are only benefiting political elites.
They say rampant looting in the mining sector results in the allocation of insufficient funds towards service delivery.

Zimbabwe Confident It Will Produce 6 Million Carats And Generate US$1 Bn From Diamonds

A Chinese diamond company, Anjin Investment, has publicly apologised to Headman Chiadzwa for resuming operations in his area without paying a courtesy call to the traditional leader first.
The company resumed operations early this year but did not pay a courtesy call to the traditional leader as per traditional protocols.
Speaking at Headman Chiadzwa compound last week during a visit by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development led by Edmond Mukaratigwa, Anjin human resources manager Amon Mhlanga, said:
<blockquote>
We would like to apologise to Headman Chiadzwa for our failure to pay a courtesy call when we came back to mine in his area.
We are very sorry and we admit that we erred. We did not follow the protocol to visit the headman and advise him of our presence in his area.
</blockquote>
Mhlanga also tried to assure the community that their company was no longer involved in egregious human rights violations. He said:
<blockquote>
We know there are legacy issues but we promise you to resolve some of the outstanding issues.
Our company is not yet financial strong like ZCDC (Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company).
We are still trying to make things work but definitely, we will attend to community issues.

He promised to engage his Chinese counterparts on the issue of respecting local cultures and observing human rights.
Also present at Headman Chiadzwa’s homestead were community-based, and civil society organisations among other stakeholders.
Anjin is a joint venture between a Chinese company, Anhui Foreign Economic Construction, and Matt Bronze Enterprises, which was formed by Zimbabwe’s Defence Ministry and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).
Anjin operated in Chiadzwa from 2009 to 2016 before the government revoked licences of all diamond companies operating in Chiadzwa leading to the formation of the Zimbabwe Consolidation Diamond Company (ZCDC).

Anjin Apologises For Mining Diamonds Without Headman Chiadzwa’s Blessings

Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) board members have resigned in protest after the government awarded part of the Chiadzwa diamond fields to a Chinese firm.
The ZCDC board members led by chairman Killian Ukama tendered their resignations citing lack of consultation.
They argued that the unilateral action to award Portal B (rich in resource), which is part of Chiadzwa diamond fields, undermined the authority of the board. Business Times quotes its source as saying:
<blockquote>ZCDC board members resigned recently registering their displeasure over the parcelling out of Portal B in Marange to Chinese Anjin.
The directive is said to have come from President Mnangagwa through Mines Minister Chitando after his trip to China in 2018.</blockquote>
Anjin Investments is jointly owned by Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Company Ltd of China and Matt Bronze and is an investment vehicle controlled by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
The company is expected to resume diamond extraction in July this year after being controversially barred from operating in the resource-rich Chiadzwa area in 2016.
The ZCDC board consisted of Ukama (chairman), Ellah Muchemwa, Elizabeth Nerwande Chibanda, Zenzo Nsimbi, Esau Chiadzwa, Alexander Mukwekwezeke and Niya Mtombeni.
Mines and Mining Development minister Winston Chitando told the publication that the Ministry was currently reviewing board composition in all its parastatals and companies under its wing.

ZCDC Board Members Resign En Masse

The government has given the green light a Chinese diamond mining company, Anjin, to resume mining operations in the Chiadzwa diamond fields.
Anjin was booted out during the reign of former President Robert Mugabe on February 22 2016, along with Mbada Diamonds.
The two mining firms were expelled on the grounds that their special grant licences had expired. This came after Mugabe complained that the companies were engaged in leakages of diamonds out of the country, with the nation benefitting nothing.
However, the incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa has roped in Anjin and a Russian company, Alrosa. Speaking about this latest development, Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said:
<blockquote>Anjin, which used to operate in the area, is now back on the ground. We expect that it will commence production, at the latest, by the end of May. We are looking at it is a significant producer in that regard.</blockquote>
The two companies, Anjin and Alrosa, will form partnerships with the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC), which is wholly owned by the government of Zimbabwe.

Anjin Returns To Chiadzwa Diamond Fields

First Lady Grace Mugabe allegedly received $7 million from Chinese diamond mining company Anjin Investments in order to finance the construction of her school, Grace Mugabe Junior School in Mazowe. According to a report from weekly publication, the Independent, the US$7 million state-of-the-art school was built by funds from Anjin Investments. <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/06/19/chinese-lied-used-sell-false-promises-thats-kicked-chiadzwa-mugabe/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Her husband, Robert Mugabe, recently complained that the Chineses had used him and lied to him and the people of Zimbabwe</a>.  The school is built on a 7 720-square metre plot and features 27 classrooms, a library, an art room, music room, computer room and auxiliary equipment rooms.
