A Malaysian national who was arrested at Victoria Falls International Airport on Saturday after one live bullet was found in her baggage has been acquitted.
In a brief statement, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said that Lucy Kabethi Wanjiku (36), who appeared before the Victoria Falls Magistrates Court on charges of unlawful possession of ammunition was acquitted on Wednesday. It said:

The 36-year-old Malaysian national, Lucy Kabethi Wanjiku who was appearing before the Victoria Falls Magistrates Court on charges of unlawful possession of ammunition was yesterday acquitted.
The charges were emanating from an incident that took place on the 2nd of March 2024 at the Victoria Falls International Airport where one live 9mm round of ammunition was detected by the baggage scanner as part of the accused person’s luggage.

Malaysian Woman Caught With A Live Bullet At Victoria Falls Airport Acquitted

A 43-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly smuggling 30 pistols, 30 empty magazines and 1 700 rounds of ammunition from South Africa into Zimbabwe.
The guns and ammunition were found on a cross-border bus at the High Glen Bus Terminus in Harare on Monday afternoon.
The suspect has been identified by the police as Douglas Emmanuel Jekanyika (43), and his accomplice identified as Godknows Gunda, is still at large.
Zimbabwe Republic Police spokesperson for Harare Province, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-smuggles-30-guns-1-700-rounds-of-ammunition-from-sa/">The Herald</a> on Wednesday that the guns and ammunition were stashed in two boxes. He said:

On March 5, 2024, at around 1000 hours, information was received to the effect that there was a cross-border bus, Tems Logistics, that was transporting firearms and ammunition from South Africa to High Glen bus terminus, Glen Norah, Harare. A team of operatives reacted to the information. The bus arrived at around 1300 hours.
After the arrival of the bus, operatives waited for the receiver of the consignment and after about 45 minutes, accused Douglas Emmanuel Jekanyika, aged 43, arrived at the scene of the crime to collect his consignment from South Africa.
The officers rounded up the accused person who had collected his two boxes that were wrapped in black plastic bags. The parcels were marked “Thandie”. The team arrested the accused person and recovered the two boxes.
The boxes contained 30 Blow pistol firearms with 30 empty magazines and 1 700 rounds of ammunition. The 30 firearms included 10 x Blow F92,9mm calibre pistols, 20 x Blow P29,9mm pistols and 34 boxes with 50 rounds of 9mm ammunition each.
Investigations revealed that the firearms were being transported in a white Terms Logistics Bus (registration number KT25LSGP), which was towing a trailer with registration number KT68YLGP.

Jekanyika told the investigators that the parcels (two boxes) were not his and that he had been sent to collect them by his friend known as Godknows Gunda who was out of town.
The suspect was then taken to ZRP Southerton Police Station.
Further investigations by the police revealed that each firearm is valued at around US$350 while the rounds of ammunition are valued at US$250 all totalling US$14 750.

30 Guns, 1 700 Founds Of Ammunition Found On Cross-border Bus

Another foreign national has been arrested at an airport in Zimbabwe for unlawful possession of ammunition.
36-year-old Malaysian national, Lucy Kabethi Wanjiku was arrested at the Victoria Falls International Airport on Saturday, 02 March, barely 24 hours after the arrest of a South African national on similar charges.
She was arrested after one live 9mm round of ammunition was detected in her possessions by the baggage scanner.
In a statement on Tuesday, 05 March, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Wanjiku was denied bail by a Victoria Falls magistrate today and her sentence will be delivered tomorrow. The NPA said:

A 36-year-old Malaysian national, Lucy Kabethi Wanjiku was brought before the Victoria Falls Magistrates Court on charges of unlawful possession of ammunition.
The accused person was arrested on the 2nd of March 2024 at the Victoria Falls International Airport when one live 9mm round of ammunition was detected by the baggage scanner.
She applied for bail. The bail application was dismissed this afternoon. The trial was finalised and judgment will be handed down tomorrow.

On Friday, 01 March, a 25-year-old South African national, Cuan Reed Govender was arrested at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport for unlawful possession of ammunition.
He was arrested by the police after they searched his baggage and found 5 live rounds of ammunition.
Govender, whom authorities claimed was the anonymous “John Doe”, who sent a bomb/firearm alert to FastJet alleging a plan to attack Zimbabwe’s airports, particularly Victoria Falls International Airport last Friday, intended to catch an Airlink flight to South Africa.
Reports indicate that X-ray scanners detected five bullets in Govender’s blue bag he carried to the airport.
He reportedly told detectives that the bag was the one he used when going to the shooting range after buying a gun to defend himself, adding that he must have forgotten to remove the bullets.
Govender was taken to the Harare Magistrates Court on 02 March where he appeared without a lawyer before magistrate Sharon Rakafa.
He returned to the court yesterday, 04 March, where he was fined US$300 for unlawful possession of ammunition.

Malaysian National Caught With Ammunition At Victoria Falls Airport

A 31-year-old Mutare man was recently arrested after he was found in possession of 11 rounds of live ammunition which he was selling at Mhaka Shopping Centre in Yeovil suburb of Mutare.
Kudzai Samson Zvinoera (31) appeared before Mutare magistrate, Langton Carter, and was charged with contravening Section 4 (1)(2) of the Firearms Act, Chapter 10:09 (Possession or acquisition of ammunition without a certificate).
He pleaded guilty to the offence and was fined ZWL$30 000. However, Zvinoera will spend 30 days in jail if he fails to pay the money by 5 December.
Prosecuting, Thurstone Mubvumbi, said Zvinoera was found in possession of 10 live rounds of ammunition and the other round was found at his place of residence. He said:

On November 14, at Mhaka Shops in Yeovil, Zvinoera was found in unlawful possession of 11 live ammunition without a certificate or licence.
On that day, police received information that Zvinoera was selling live ammunition. 
Police reacted to the information and found Zvinoera in possession of 10 live ammunition.
He was arrested and taken to his place of residence where another bullet was found in his room.

Zvinoera was asked to produce a certificate or licence authorising him to possess or acquire the ammunition but he failed to do so.
Upon cross-examination, Zvinoera said the bullets belonged to his late father who was an ex-combatant.
He said the bullets were left behind by his father when he surrendered his gun to law enforcement agents some years back.
Zvinoera also said he was jobless and he was trying to raise money for his own upkeep by selling the ammunition. He said:

I am unemployed and was looking for money for my upkeep. My late father owned the bullets. He was a war veteran.
When he was asked to surrender his firearm some years back, he complied but left the bullets at our house.

The bullets have been in our house for decades. I thought I could sell them to raise money for my upkeep.

Mutare Man Sells Bullets On The Street

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is set to raid targeted homes and business premises in search of illegally held firearms commonly linked to rampant violent crimes involving the use of dangerous weapons in the country.
This follows the Friday expiry of the 53-day amnesty declared in August by President Emmerson Mnangagwa on all illegal gun owners to voluntarily surrender their weapons without any prosecution.
Police announced Thursday 545 firearms and 260 rounds of ammunition had been surrendered since the start of the amnesty. Said police in a statement seen by Pindula News:

On 29/09/22, seven firearms were voluntarily surrendered to the Police throughout the country on the operation, “Firearms Amnesty,” bringing the cumulative figures to 545.
Meanwhile, 260 rounds of ammunition have so far been voluntarily surrendered to the Police across the country.

The number however excluded any weapons that may have been surrendered between the period the statement was issued and 30 September, the date set as the official end of the amnesty.
Police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police will soon conduct an operation targeting those who did not surrender illegal weapons with criminal charges hanging over the heads of culprits. <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2022/10/police-plan-home-raids-in-search-of-guns-as-amnesty-nets-545-firearms/">ZimLive</a> cites him as saying:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges those who are yet to surrender the firearms to utilise the opportunity before criminal charges are preferred against anyone who will be found in possession of unlicensed firearms during the pending physical check exercise to be conducted by the police on all residential and business premises where illegal firearms are suspected to be kept or hidden.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police implores all unlicensed firearm owners to visit local police stations and update their records in compliance with the Firearms Act Chapter 10.09.

He said the government extended the amnesty after finding that a lot of guns were “generally being held illegally by those with expired firearm licenses, members of gun clubs who are no longer active, farmers, hunters and individuals who may be no longer be practising.
Nyathi also said there are some firearms holders who died and their guns are inherited by their relatives.

Police Plot To Raid Homes, Business Premises In Search Of Firearms

South African security agencies are tracking down more than 1.5 million rounds of ammunition reportedly stolen during rampant looting in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces over the past several days.
The ammunition had been stored in a container at a depot in Prospecton, which was breached by looters on Wednesday.
New24 reported sources with knowledge of the incident saying that the bullets were housed in a container stacked high off the ground, lending credence to claims that the depot may have been intentionally targeted.
Johan Coertze, an ammunition importer, told the publication that the bullets belong to him. He said:
<blockquote>I can’t really give specifics about numbers and calibres, but they were ours. They were imported by us, and I am meeting the Hawks on Monday.</blockquote>
He said the ammunition would have been sold to gun shops and dealerships but would not be drawn to comment further.
While visiting police operations in the province on Wednesday evening, Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that 10 000 rounds of ammunition, thought to have originated from this container, were seized.
