The leader of the opposition United Zimbabwe Alliance (UZA) party, Elisabeth Valerio, says there is nothing wrong with the Government buying air ambulances to capacitate the country’s health delivery system.
This comes after 18 out of 32 helicopters purchased from Russia were officially handed over to President Emmerson Mnangagwa at RGM International Airport in Harare on Thursday.
Twelve of the choppers were designated as air ambulances and six were assigned to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).
The helicopters were reportedly delivered at a cost of US$10 million each, but some reports claim that the true value of each plane is US$2.5 million.
Valerio told <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/">Pindula News</a> that UZA does not have sufficient information on the cost of the planes but be that as it may, the acquisition of the helicopters is commendable as long as they are used for the intended purpose. She said:

We as a political party, and the public in general do not have sufficient information to assess the terms or cost-benefit analysis of this specific acquisition.
We do not see any problem with the acquisition of the helicopters as long as they are being used for their intended purpose.
The purchase of these helicopters on the surface complements the Sendai Framework for disaster reduction.
If it is good for the country, UZA has no reason to be in opposition to the development. The main concern we would have is around how this acquisition is being funded and how our country is paying for the helicopters.
In all developments, we as UZA are concerned about whether it is in the best interests of Zimbabweans and their national health service, and how that determination was made – or whether in truth the decision was driven by political or personal interests.
We also are skeptical, given the nature of such contracts, about whether this partnership is designed to support our woefully mismanaged rural healthcare system or is in fact targeted at medivac services for the political elite and wealthy at the expense of the majority of Zimbabweans.
The government of Zimbabwe should also prioritise service delivery, especially in the health sector for all citizens.
As a nation, we need to know our priorities and stop prioritising the politics of the day at the expense of the majority.
It is our fervent hope that the newly acquired helicopters will be used for the benefit of the citizens.
There is not much that we as UZA can do about this purchase now that the helicopters are already here.

Opposition Leader Elisabeth Valerio Says Acquisition Of Air Ambulances Commendable

Presidential spokesperson George Charamba has said President Emmerson has delivered more than Zimbabweans asked for after the Government purchased 32 planes from Russia.
Posting on Twitter, Charamba said Government critics demanded that authorities should provide ambulances to public hospitals and air ambulances have been brought. <a href="https://twitter.com/GeorgeCharamba2/status/1659645346899795968">Said Charamba</a>:

You Asked For Ambulances, We Delivered Helicopters, Says ED Spokesperson

Mbizo MP, Settlement Chikwinya (CCC), has urged the government to hasten the deployment of ambulances at toll gates to ensure that accident victims are ferried to hospitals quickly.
In May last year, the World Health Organisation (WHO) donated 10 ambulances to the government for deployment to tollgates but the vehicles are nowhere to be seen.
In a statement, Chikwinya, who is the party’s transport and infrastructure parliamentary spokesperson, noted that victims of road traffic accidents continue to lose life with the government sitting on ambulances.
He urged Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, who is the Minister of Health and Childcare, to immediately release the ambulances so that they serve their purpose. Said Chikwinya:

Recently the Insurance Council of Zimbabwe donated four more ambulances for the same purposes as Zimbabwe intends to raise the figure of Ambulances to be stationed at toll gates to twenty but still, none of these has been deployed with no explanation from Chiwenga.
Ambulances at toll gates arrive much faster at accident scenes because they do not have to weave through the high traffic volume that characterises our city centres, especially during peak hours.
This service, if properly implemented, as per the recommendations of the World Health Organization will definitely save many lives and we call upon Hon Chiwenga the Minister of Health to immediately release the available Ambulances for work so that we minimise any further loss of life.

CCC Urges Govt To Deploy Ambulances At Tollgates

Fuel company Redan has reportedly donated 3 ambulances to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who is also the country’s Health Minister, Health Times reports.
According to the pub publication:
<blockquote>Vice President and Minister for Health and Child Care General (Rtd) Dr Constatntino Chiwenga has recieved a donation of three ambulances from Redan Coupons. The three units will service Masvingo, Gwanda and Marondera and they come with world class hospital standard life support medical equipment.</blockquote>
Redan also donated DFI fuel coupons together with the ambulances.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has impounded two ambulances that were reportedly donated to Kwekwe City Council by a former ZANU PF legislator.
The development was confirmed by acting Town Clerk Lucia Mkandla, who said that she was not aware of the reasons behind ZIMRA’s move. She said:
<blockquote>The ambulances were impounded. We don’t know the reason. I believe Zimra was just doing its job.</blockquote>
NewZimbabwe.com was told by its source that some ZANU PF officials may have used their influence to smuggle the vehicles into the country. Said the source:
<blockquote>The ambulances were donated to the council by then Mbizo MP Mupereri.
The reason for the impound of the vehicles we understand is because their entry into the country was questionable. They are believed to have been smuggled into the country without any tax clearance.</blockquote>
A top ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa who has been arrested for abuse of office is thought to have used his power to facilitate the illegal entry of the ambulances into the country.

ZIMRA Seizes 2 City Of Kwekwe Ambulances

The Minister of Health, Obadiah Moyo said that the government has acquired 100 new ambulances to service provincial, district and rural health centres.
Moyo said this last week during Parliament’s question and answer session. He was responding to MDC Binga North MP Prince Dubeko Sibanda who wanted to be appraised of the government’s policy towards upgrading rural health centres. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>The issue of ambulances is very critical in all this because we want to be able to move patients from one level to the next where they will be able to get assistance.
I just indicated that we are getting 100 ambulances and we want to see an equitable distribution of these ambulances so that we can be able to take care of the problem.
At the same time, at the lower level, at the rural healthcare centre level, we want to see an integrated rural healthcare centre, which means that it will have all the facilities to be able to assist.</blockquote>

Govt Acquires 100 Ambulances - Health Minister

Bulawayo City Council has a depleted fleet of ambulances, which is making it difficult to serve all the 21 clinics in the city.
This was revealed by the latest council minutes. Councillor Silas Chigora had this to say:
<blockquote>A total of 21 ambulances would, therefore, be required. With the current financial challenges, this was not feasible.
Currently, the city has only nine operational ambulances. Operation Florian had recently donated two ambulances and this has been appreciated.</blockquote>
It was also revealed that council clinics are charging residents RTGS$5 as consultation fees yet there was no medication.
