The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has issued a warning to the public about false recruitment agents who deceptively charge fees, allegedly to assist people in joining the military.
Colonel Alphios Makotore, Director Army Public Relations, released a statement on Thursday, 19 September, clarifying that the ZNA does not charge any fees for recruitment or training and does not involve third parties in the process.
He said that all medical examinations are conducted by the Army free of charge.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, Colonel Makotore advises the public to verify the authenticity of any recruitment advertisement or agent through official ZNA channels. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has noted with concern the increase in numbers of bogus recruiting agents targeting unsuspecting members of the public to fleece them of their money.
These criminals pose as recruitment officers conducting official recruitment programmes and/or exercises. In the process, they demand money from prospective candidates.
The unscrupulous individuals are using various tactics, including social media platforms and fake recruitment notices and advertisements to deceive people into parting with their hard-earned money in exchange for false promises of employment within the ZNA.
The ZNA is raising these concerns because the organisation has been issuing several warnings and notices in both print and electronic media.
However, members of the public continue to fall victim as the criminals have now become so daring to the extent of flighting advertisements and notices on social media requesting for prospective candidates to present themselves for medical examinations.
The ZNA would want to stress that it neither charges any fee for recruitment or training nor include third parties.
All medical examinations are done by the Army and there are no fees charged for the service. Recruitment processes are conducted through official channels and it is pertinent to repeat that all recruitments are free of charge.
The public is advised to confirm with any ZNA Camp close to them when approached by individuals claiming to be ZNA recruitment agents.
To avoid falling victim to these scams, the public must always verify the authenticity of any recruitment advertisement or agent through the official ZNA channels. People are advised not to entertain any requests for payment or personal financial information.
The public must take note that all ZNA recruitment programmes are advertised in the mainstream print and electronic media.
Prospective applicants would then respond through written applications, after which selections are carried out at designated military camps throughout the country’s provinces.
The ZNA remains committed to serving and protecting the nation and will not tolerate any actions that seek to undermine its integrity.
The law enforcement agency will not hesitate to take action against those found perpetuating these scams.
Members of the public must report to the nearest Army Camp or Zimbabwe Republic Police Station any suspicious persons masquerading as members of the ZNA on recruitment exercises.

Fake Army Recruiters On The Prowl, Warns ZNA

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has distanced itself from a letter circulating on social media platforms purported to have been written by Commander ZNA Lieutenant General David Sigauke.
The letter alleges that JB Family Electronics, a company operating in Mbare, a high-density suburb in Harare, was an events sponsor and donor of ZNA.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, 5 July, ZNA spokesperson, Colonel Alphios Makotore said the letter was malicious, reckless and irresponsible. Part of the letter reads:

It has come to our attention that a letter purporting to have been written by Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General David Sigauke is circulating on social media.
The letter purports that J Family Electronics which is doing its business in Mbare Township is a regular ZNA and National Events Sponsor and donor.
The illegally operating company further insinuated that the Commander Zimbabwe National Army had authorised it to do business, without hindrance whatsoever.
This is blatantly false, malicious, irresponsible and reckless and should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves.
Everything about the letter is neither genuine nor authentic. This includes a faked letterhead, date stamp, office phone number, signature and the signature block itself.

Col Makotore said no such letter originated from the army headquarters and Lieutenant General Sigauke is in no way involved with JB Family Electronics Trading nor events mentioned in the document.
He said ZNA was working to bring the perpetrators to book and face the full wrath of the law.

ZNA Denies Links With JB Family Electronics

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son, Sean has reportedly been promoted to the post of an army major.
The move has raised speculation that Mnangagwa is strengthening his hold on the military as he prepares for the 2023 general elections.
NewsDay reported a source saying Sean is one of the President’s key pillars in politics. Said the source:

Sean was a lieutenant before he was promoted to the position of captain in the Presidential Guard, a position which he currently holds.
He (Sean) is set to be appointed an army major after passing a course. Sean is also a businessman and is a disciplined person.
At the moment he is one of Mnangagwa’s key pillars in politics.

Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore told NewsDay that the President’s son was still captain, but had passed a junior staff course. He said:

It is true that he passed a junior staff course, he is a captain in the army and has not been promoted.
After passing the course, and just like anyone else, everyone needs progression in life.
There was a picture of him circulating on social media saying he is now an army major.
He was just celebrating passing a junior staff course just like any individual would do after being successful.

Meanwhile, political analyst Methuseli Moyo said there was nothing wrong with the President’s son making progress in the military. Said Moyo:

So far no one has brought forward any reason why he should not be promoted, except that he is the President’s son.
As to whether his upcoming promotion has a bearing on issues in ZANU PF, I think it is farfetched.
Again, to imagine that the President can consolidate power through his son in the army is stretching issues a bit too far.

Another political analyst Rejoice Ngwenya said Sean does not have an influence in the army as he does not have any war credentials.

<h2>ANOTHER BOGUS RECRUITMENT AGENT ARRESTED</h2>
The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Military Police continue to arrest more bogus recruitment agents, following the apprehension of one Emmaculanni Chimombe on 27 May 2022 in Harare.
Chimombe alias Lieutenant George duped Brian Ncube and Victor Hanembuya of USD$140.00 and USD$135.00 respectively, after promising that he could facilitate their recruitment into the ZNA.
Chimombe would collect various amounts of cash from his victims after misrepresenting himself as a recruiting officer based at Josiah Magama Tongogara Barracks.
More individuals are said to have fallen prey to Chimombe who was using his accomplices to link up with many unsuspecting job seekers in Buhera.
By the time of going to print, four (4) victims had come forward to register their complaints against Chimombe.
Chimombe was arrested after a tip-off from Ncube and Hanembuya who became suspicious as he was being evasive on the promises he had made to them.
On being apprehended, Chimombe implicated some of his accomplices who are still at large. Investigations to bring his accomplices to book are still ongoing.
The ZNA would like to commend and applaud Ncube and Hanembuya for reporting the bogus recruiting agent.
As mentioned in previous publications, the ZNA is concerned that members of the public continue to fall prey to bogus recruitment agents despite making it clear that the ZNA does not engage third parties as recruitment agents nor does it charge a fee for anyone to join the force.
All suspicious characters must be reported to the Zimbabwe Military Police on the following hotline numbers: 0712842318, 0772258410 or the nearest ZRP station and nearest military camp.
The ZNA requests members of the public to report before they become victims.

Military Police Arrest Bogus Recruitment Agent

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Court Martial has sentenced two Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) members to 40 years imprisonment each for armed robbery.
The two soldiers, Lance Corporal Tatenda Dzimbanhete and Trooper Wilfred Munesi were sentenced on 19 January.
In a statement this Friday, Director Army Public Relations Colonel Alphios Makotore said five years each of their respective sentences were suspended on condition that they restitute their robbery victim, Simon Arnold of Surrey Farm, of cash amounting to US$16 830 and R600. Said Col. Mokotore:

Two soldiers, members of the Zimbabwe National Army, Lance Corporal Dzimbanhete Tatenda and Trooper Munesi Wilfred were on 19 January sentenced to 40 years imprisonment each by the Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Court Martial for armed robbery.

General Court Martial Sentences 2 Soldiers 40 Years Imprisonment Each For Armed Robbery

Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander Lieutenant-General David Sigauke’s son, Kudzai has died, aged 31.
In a statement, director ZNA public relations, Colonel Alphios Makotore, said Kudzai died at West End Hospital of diabetes-related complications. Said Makotore:

Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant-General David Sigauke is in mourning following the passing on of his eldest son, Kudzai Sigauke. Kudzai was 31.
Kudzai succumbed to diabetes-related complications at West End Hospital in Harare on 22 December 2021 after a short illness.

Kudzai is set to be laid to rest today (Friday) at Glen Forest Cemetery.

ZNA Commander's Son Succumbs To Diabetes

Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) commander Lieutenant General David Sigauke has reportedly sent junior soldiers on forced re-training in Hwange as punishment for demanding a salary increase during an ostensibly no-holds-barred meeting, it has emerged.
Sigauke is said to have held a meeting with junior officers in Harare where some of the officers allegedly confronted him on their lowly salaries and questioned why it was not being hiked while senior government officials were amassing wealth at an alarming rate.
A chat leaked Monday also revealed resignation from the army had been banned up till the end of 2023. Read the chat:

Many servicemen are throwing in the towel but recently when General Sigauke took over he banned all resignation applications until 2023.
Those burnt beans that had been banned by General (Edzai) Chimonyo as they were not fit for consumption have been brought back by General Sigauke as he is the one who supplies them. It is bad. Sigauke recently had a meeting with soldiers in Harare and addressed them then gave them an opportunity to ask (as a drill of course), junior ranked soldiers asked about salaries and why commanders suddenly got silent about promises they made in 2017.
Sigauke responded by giving a directive that the whole Harare District Unit be taken to Hwange, 12 Infantry Battalion for retraining. As we speak they are undergoing retraining in Hwange because they asked for better salaries and why they were not being hiked yet senior politicians were stealing and not getting arrested.
</blockquote>
Army spokesperson Alphios Makotore said he does not comment on such issues over the phone.
The government is now clamping down on members of the security sector who are reportedly disgruntled over their poor salaries.
They are paid about US$200 which is some US$300 less than what they were getting under late President Robert Mugabe.

Soldiers Forced To Re-train As Punishment For Demanding A Salary Increase - Report

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) on Friday announced the death of Brigadier General Mbonisi Gatsheni and Colonel Charles Pride Muchero, both succumbed to COVID-19 related complications.
Brigadier (Rtd) General Gatsheni, whose Chimurenga name was Chris Fuyane, passed away at United Bulawayo Hospitals in Bulawayo on Monday, aged 68.
He was buried on Friday at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo.
In a statement, ZNA director Public Relations, Colonel Alphios Makotore said:

The Zimbabwe National Army is deeply saddened to announce the death of Brigadier General (Rtd) Mbonisi Gatsheni and Colonel Charles Pride Muchero.

Brigadier (Rtd) General Gatsheni was born on 09 March 1953 in Gwanda District, Matabeleland South Province.
He joined the liberation struggle in 1976 when he crossed the border into Botswana, from where his group was later on uplifted to Lusaka, Zambia to join the Liberation Struggle with the ZIPRA forces.
The late Brigadier (Rtd) General Gatsheni is survived by his wife Loveness Nkosi and five children.
Meanwhile, Colonel Muchero, whose Chimurenga name was Charles Masendeke, passed away on Friday morning at Mbuya Dorcas Hospital in Harare after having been hospitalised since 22 July. He was 61.
Funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
He was born on 19 December 1960 in Rusape, Makoni District, Manicaland Province.
Colonel Muchero crossed into Mozambique and stayed at the following ZANLA bases, Guro, Moatize in Tete and Tembwe-Mazozo Base at Maroro. That was after he briefly operated as a mujibha (war collaborator).
Late in 1978, he was sent to Tanzania and received his military training at Nachingweya where he did both the basic recruit training and specialisation in mortars. 
He is survived by his two wives Anna Netsai Muchero and Beauty Muchero and six children.

Brigadier General Gatsheni, Col Muchero Succumb To COVID-19

Villagers in the Sigola area of Esigodini in Matabeleland South province are living in fear after soldiers last week allegedly visited their homes asking for information about their stands, and collecting their personal contact details.
A villager who spoke to Southern Eye on condition of anonymity said they are now stressed following the visit by the soldiers. The villager said:
<blockquote>Last year on November 27, the soldiers moved around with a hailer and told people to vacate in the next seven days.
Three days later, they were firing shots at playing grounds and instilling fear in us.
The authorities from the government came and demarcated the land and marked where the soldiers’ camp should end.
Following this development, villagers thought that the chaos was now over. But on Friday last week, two military officers moved around every house demanding stand numbers of villagers and their mobile contacts.</blockquote>
The villager added that the soldiers did not reveal what they were collecting the information for, and also they were not accompanied by government officials or village leaders. He said:
<blockquote>Some of the people, who were being asked to produce this information, are children who are under age and had no idea of what was going on. These soldiers claimed to have been sent by the commander of the area.
This has caused panic among the villagers as most of them are the victims of the Gukurahundi genocide.
If the army is interested in the area, they should follow the protocols so that we can vacate in a proper manner.</blockquote>
Village headman Mqondisi Mpofu said he had been advised that soldiers went about collecting personal details from villagers, but since then nothing has happened.
Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Alphios Makotore said they were still consulting various stakeholders affected by the issue. Said Col Makotore:

Soldiers Terrorise Villagers In Esigodini

A former soldier was last week arrested by military police for duping potential recruits of hard-earned cash after masquerading as a recruiting agent.
Mkuhuleki Munamati Nyathi (36) was once a member of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) and was discharged from the army in 2020 for disciplinary reasons.
He was arrested for defrauding potential recruits in Guruve where the ZNA was conducting a recruitment exercise.
In a statement yesterday, ZNA director public relations Colonel Alphios Makotore said:
<blockquote>A bogus soldier, Mkuhuleki Munamati Nyathi, (36) was apprehended by members of the ZNA military police at Guruve Centre last week for defrauding potential recruits of US$140. Nyathi was discharged from the force in 2020.</blockquote>
Col Makotore said Nyathi approached the complainants Michael Gunje (23) and Tatenda Chitsiga both from Guruve and promised to facilitate their recruitment into the ZNA.
He then took the duo to Harare on the pretext that he was going to introduce them to an army general.
Nyathi however, dumped the complainants near Harare Central Prison along the road leading to Josiah Magama Tongogara barracks.
The complainants made a report at the Harare District Military Police Department leading to the arrest of Nyathi.
Col Makotore said Nyathi was handed over to Guruve Police and appeared before a Guruve magistrate last Saturday and was remanded in custody pending trial.
He advised members of the public that the ZNA did not engage third parties in its recruitment processes.

Military Police Nab Bogus Soldier In Guruve

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) says it does condone criminal activities by some rogue and undisciplined members of the force who are engaging in brazen armed robberies across the country.
In a statement this Friday, ZNA director of public relations Colonel Alphios Makotore said those members of the armed forces who are bringing the name of the organisation into disrepute through engaging in criminal enterprises will be investigated and dealt with. He said:
<blockquote>In view of the recent cases of criminal activities by members of the force, the ZNA would like to put it on record for the umpteenth time that as an organisation, it does not in any way condone such behaviour nor any forms of criminality committed by any of its members purporting to be on official duty.
Anyone found to be on the wrong side of the law will be dealt with in accordance with the laws of the country. Incidents of armed robberies which were reported at Gwebi River Bridge lay-bye along Harare-Chinhoyi Road on January 6 and in Mutawatawa, Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe on January 19 will be thoroughly investigated and the culprits will be brought to book.</blockquote>

Army Warns Rogue Soldiers Committing Armed Robberies

The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has described the fatal shooting of Tatenda Munetsiwa by 52 Infantry Battalion soldiers in Guinea Fowl, near Gweru on January 16 as a case of mistaken identity.
Munetsiwa was shot dead by soldiers who were reacting to a report of the theft of copper cables by a machete-wielding gang on the fateful day.
In a statement released this Friday, ZNA director of public relations Colonel Alphios Makotore said soldiers at Guinea Fowl Army Base were despatched to apprehend a group of thieves cutting telephone copper wire following a report by William Shoko and Simon Muzondo.
Unbeknown to the military patrol, a group of civilians had already set an ambush to apprehend the suspected thieves. Said Makotore:
<blockquote>Meanwhile, a group of civilians which had, among them the now deceased Munetsiwa had already set up its own ambush to try and apprehend the reported copper wire thieves.
Unbeknown to each other, the soldiers’ patrol and the civilian group ambush teams were working for a common purpose to apprehend the copper wire thieves.
However, as fate would have it, the two groups later clashed as they each other of being the suspected copper wire thieves.
Circumstances are that when the soldiers got into the ambush, they thought the copper wire thieves wanted to disarm them.
To resist being disarmed by these civilians who were armed with machetes and iron bars, the armed soldiers had no option but to open fire resulting in the unfortunate death of Munetsiwa and the injury of three others.
… As such they sprung from the ambush intending to subdue and apprehend the soldiers.
To demonstrate that this was an unfortunate incident, both the civilian group and the soldiers’ patrol reported at Guinea Fowl Base what had transpired during the incident.
The civilians reported that they had been attacked by armed robbers, while the soldiers also reported that they had been ambushed by an armed group of copper wire thieves.</blockquote>

Army Speaks On Guinea Fowl Fatal Shooting Of Civilian

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Army" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe National Army</a> director of public relations Lieutenant Alphios Makotore has condemned an army officer who shot and killed his wife and injured his mother-in-law in the same incident.
Aaron Taurai Mlambo visited his now-deceased wife and mother-in-law around midnight last weekend in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Chitungwiza" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Chitungwiza</a> where he opened fire on the duo and later on committed suicide using his service gun, an AK47 assault rifle. In a statement, Lt Col Makotore said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe National Army categorically condemns the actions of the member and violence associated with the incident.
The Commander Zimbabwe National Army, Lieutenant General Edzai Absalom Chanyuka Chimonyo, generals and senior officers, officers, men and women of the Zimbabwe National Army regret this unfortunate incident and would like to offer heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and wish a speedy recovery to the injured mother-in-law.</blockquote>
Mlambo was attached at Kaguvi Barracks (formerly Old Cranborne Barracks) but based in Masvingo.
He had visited his wife Evelyn Madawo (24) at her 41-year-old mother Nomari Madawo when the tragic incident occurred.
