A Zimbabwean truck driver who was kidnapped on the 15th of December this year in Mpumalanga has been rescued by police in Komatipoort.
The 42-year-old was kidnapped by two suspects aged 25 and 28 who demanded a ransom of R50 000 to be deposited by his (driver’s) employer.
The duo was arrested on Friday, <a href="https://www.iol.co.za/news/crime-and-courts/kidnappers-arrested-after-demanding-r50-000-ransom-for-zimbabwean-truck-driver-in-mpumalanga-4ebd81aa-bf9b-4b91-8db0-4bae946caf37">IOL</a> reported citing Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala. He is quoted as saying:

The truck driver from the country of Zimbabwe was kidnapped on Thursday 15 December 2022, at around 3am near Lebombo border in Komatipoort.
According to the report, the victim was kidnapped by armed suspects under the railway bridge in Komatipoort as he returned to the truck he was driving after buying some food.
It is said that he was taken by his assailants at gunpoint into the bushes. It is further indicated that the suspects demanded a ransom of R50 000 to be deposited by his (driver’s) employer.

Mohlala said various military and law enforcement stakeholders, hostage negotiators, as well as the driver’s employer, mobilised resources in order to ensure that the victim was brought back alive.
The suspects contacted a colleague as well as the victim’s employer and further made some demands.
The victim was traced and found as well as the two suspects were cornered and apprehended.
During their arrest, authorities found an air gun, four mobile phones, a large sum of an undisclosed amount of cash and two knives in the possession of the two suspects.
The two were charged with kidnapping as well as possession of suspected stolen properties and they are expected to appear at the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 19 December 2022.
Mohlala said police cannot rule out the possibility that the two could have been involved in the previous kidnapping incident where another truck driver went through a similar ordeal last week.

South Africa: Zimbabwean Truck Driver Kidnapped, Ransom Of R50K Demanded

Zimbabwean truck drivers living and working in South Africa say they fear being attacked by anti-immigrant groups who accuse them of stealing trucking jobs from South Africans.
Richard Mudhara, a Zimbabwean truck driver working in Johannesburg, told GroundUp in an interview that he was abducted on 2 March a few kilometres from Durban by three men.
He said his abductors told him they were with the All Truck Drivers Foundation (ATDF) and Operation Dudula.
Mudhara alleged that the men had stopped his truck, smashed the windows and forced him out.
They then tied him up and held him at gunpoint in bushes while his truck was driven away. Said Mudhara:

My mind was racing. They told me they were after truck drivers from Zimbabwe.
They told me to comply or be killed so I prayed for them to let me live.
… I prayed for them to let me live because some who found themselves in similar circumstances, were reported dead.
</blockquote>
He said his life was saved when the gunman received a phone call and left him there.
The drivers, with Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) permits, claim that rogue police are also extorting them for cash.
However, Operation Dudula, a rising anti-immigrant, vigilante-like group has distanced itself from the attacks.
Zandile Dabula, Operation Dudula’s secretary-general said they don’t fight people, but the government, adding that the movement was yet to focus on the trucking sector.
Not only Zimbabwean drivers are under attack, but other immigrant drivers from Zambia and Malawi are also targeted by xenophobic groups.
Vusimusi Sibanda from the African Diaspora Global Network claimed that 15 immigrant truck drivers were reported to have been killed over the past three years. He said:

People who attacked these truck drivers were not arrested, which is why we have more vigilante groups such as Operation Dudula and the ATDF.
Lives were lost and trucks were destroyed yet no one was ever held accountable and even the government has not done anything to stop these attacks.

Sibanda said the Network was pushing for SAPS and the SA government to intervene in the attacks against immigrant truck drivers.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda told GroundUp that they have made several arrests linked to attacks on truck drivers.
Netshiunda urged drivers to report any corrupt activities so that police can investigate them.
He said criminals are behind the spate of attacks on truck drivers three months ago and the attacks had nothing to do with vigilante groups.

Zimbabwean Truck Drivers In South Africa Live In Fear Of Vigilantes

South African small truck operators Friday blocked the N3 highway near Van Reenen after the government had failed to provide feedback on November 3 on the fate of foreign drivers.
The protest is said to have followed a memorandum of demands handed to transport and labour ministers Fikile Mbalula and Thulas Nxesi on October 25 during a protest on the N9 and N10 highways in the Eastern Cape.
The ministers accepted the memorandum, calling for intervention into the four-year-long debate about the employment of foreign nationals in the logistics industry and its effect on job opportunities for South Africans.
The government promised that a technical team would report back to the drivers and small truck operators, which sources claimed did not happen.
National Truck Drivers Association secretary-general Siphosihle Muthwa alleged the government had failed to respond to the drivers within seven days, as initially agreed upon. Muthwa said:

Government promised the drivers that within seven days they would provide them with feedback into the process of addressing concerns around the employment of foreign nationals, among other issues. Government never came back to them. That is why we are seeing what is happening on the N3.

Muthwa said one of the demands in the memorandum was for the government to remove the operating licences of employers hiring foreign nationals. He added:

That will stop all the things that are happening, but government do not want to give the memorandum to employers. That is why drivers are angry.

At 9 am, the N3 Toll Concession said all lanes remained closed at Van Reenen, resulting in a standstill northbound from Tugela toll plaza and southbound from Van Reenen.
Police spokesperson Brig Jay Naicker said it was alleged truck drivers parked their vehicles on the N3 and removed the keys.
He said the police were at the scene and attempts were underway to have the trucks removed.
All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied SA (ATDFASA) secretary-general Sifiso Nyathi disputed their involvement in the protests.

South African Truckers Block Roads Over Employment Of Foreign Drivers

Zimbabwe has warned that the non-renewal of work permits for Zimbabwean truck drivers in South Africa will have a huge adverse impact on the economies of SADC member countries. Reference is made to the above-mentioned subject matter.
The Ministry has received concerning reports on the imminent non-renewal of work permits for Zimbabwean truck drivers in South Africa. Over the years, we have dealt with sporadic situations where trucks were stopped, and foreign drivers attacked by violent gangs in South Africa. In many of these instances your esteemed office has been of great assistance, and we sincerely appreciate your support.
South African companies who have contracted foreigners as drivers are now under pressure to employ their nationals. Consequently, this will lead to a possible termination of employment contracts of Zimbabwean drivers if their work permits are not renewed. This is a major concern for our truck drivers and transport operators as our bilateral and regional protocols provide that cross-border road transport must be conducted in the spirit of fair competition, providing for equal treatment, and upholding the principles of non-discrimination and reciprocity. These protocols are meant to facilitate the smooth flow of cross-border traffic and promote trade within the SADC and COMESA regions. 
It is important to note that truck drivers are also key drivers of our economies within SADC, therefore must be treated with dignity, and protected by every country in the region. Therefore, we kindly request your intervention and use the diplomatic channels at your disposal to avert a potentially volatile situation.
