NetOne, a state-owned mobile network operator (MNO), says it firmly opposes the sale of its airtime above the gazetted prices set by the Postal &amp; Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).

NetOne Responds To "Street Rate" Airtime Pricing Reports

Econet has been facing network challenges for a few days now. They communicated a couple of days ago that they were experiencing a technical issue affecting recharge and some banking services. They apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured customers that they were working to restore normal service. While some services have been restored, there are still some issues remaining.
Econet announced that customers can now top up their airtime using recharge cards purchased from an Econet vendor. However, services dependent on USSD are still not functioning properly. Calls, SMS, and internet services have been working fine, so customers can still use those features without any problems.
<h3>Techzim Affected</h3>
Techzim, a technology news website, also reported that they were affected by the network issues. They mentioned that *405#, a service code for Econet, was not working. However, they highlighted that NetOne users had alternative options like purchasing airtime on the Techzim website, via WhatsApp, or through their app.

Police have arrested four suspects for fraud and cybercrime after they allegedly stole NetOne airtime worth more than ZWL$560 million from the telecoms company.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police detectives worked with the NetOne Loss Control and Fraud Management Unit to nab the suspects. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

Police detectives teamed up with NetOne Loss Control and Fraud Management Unit to track the suspects leading to the arrest of James Mwanza.
Checks made confirmed that James Mwanza received ZWL50 000 000.00 worth of pin-less airtime from the deal. He implicated Primrose Maireti and others.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has established that a total of ZWL565 999 964.00 worth of airtime was stolen from 3rd December 2022 to 19th January 2023. NetOne employees were sharing the loot with the airtime dealers.
Police has since recovered a Honda Fit motor vehicle registration number AFW 6813 from Kumbulani Nyapfumbi, which was bought through the loot.
Investigations have also revealed that he bought a residential stand for USD11 000.00 and another Honda Fit vehicle chassis number GE6-1744428 for USD3 971.00. The vehicle is on its way from Japan.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will ensure that company employees and their accomplices face the full wrath of the law for fraudulent activities.

Diaspora Can Now Send Airtime To Zimbabwe via Techzim

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe will on Thursday launch “Smart US Dollar bundles” that will allow its subscribers to buy airtime, data and SMS products in US dollars.
Fungai Mandiveyi, the company’s Media and Corporate Communications Executive said subscribers will be able to buy the smart bundles in denominations ranging from US$0.50 up to US$10. Said Mandiveyi:

Techzim Offers Business Airtime Top-up Services

Airtime vendors have lamented a proposal by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) to phase out physical bulk airtime recharge sales and put a cap on individual electronic purchases.
In a circular sent to mobile network operators dated 22 October 2021, FIU said the move is meant to curb the rampant abuse of the platforms by illicit currency speculators.
FIU stated that going forward, airtime dealers and individuals will have to use electronic recharging as physical airtime sales are being reduced to 20 per cent and below.
The decision has sparked an outcry from bulk recharge voucher dealers and vendors who feel the proposal will cripple their business.
Airtime dealers who spoke to Chronicle in Bulawayo on Wednesday said the measures will cripple their business and affect many families who depend on the trade. Tinashe Samuel, who operates in the city centre, said:

Other business ventures are already saturated to the extent that if I start selling things like groceries, I will not get anything. Lots of jobless youths will be affected.

A shop attendant at one of the airtime wholesalers who requested anonymity said:
<blockquote>
If the Government goes ahead to ban airtime selling, then I will lose my job as I am employed here full time.

Another vendor, Tapiwa Moyo, said that the Government was targeting “small fish” and leaving out big dealers who are involved in full scale illegal foreign currency trading and money laundering. Said Moyo:

Even if we sell airtime in forex, we don’t get much from that business.
There are major players like forex dealers who spend the whole day in the streets holding bundles of money but nothing is done to them. Why are we being targeted?

He said the banning of airtime vouchers will affect many families especially the elderly people in rural areas where network connectivity is poor and some are not familiar with how to buy airtime using mobile money.
In its circular to the country’s three telecommunications MNOs, Econet, Telecel and the State-owned NetOne, FIU said:

Mobile telecommunication service providers shall take steps to reduce the production and sale of bulk physical airtime recharge vouchers and promote the increased use of electronic airtime recharge, reduce sales of physical airtime recharge to 20 per cent of all airtime sales by 31 January 2022 and to 10 per cent by 30 April 2022.

Airtime Vendors Lament RBZ Move To Restrict Bulk Airtime Sales

Relatives of the late Strive Madamombe (11) who was recently murdered by his stepfather Owen Nyamukachi have reportedly demanded US$2 000 from the murderer for them to remove their son’s blood that has congealed in the house.
According to the African custom, the blood of a murdered person can only be cleaned by a blood relative.
According to a statement by police, <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/15/harare-man-crushes-stepsons-head-over-z20-airtime/">Nyamukachi, of Zengeza 2 suburb of Chitungwiza, crushed his stepson’s head with a hammer on 7 February following a misunderstanding over the purchase of airtime recharge cards.</a>
He gave Strive US$1.00 to buy airtime worth ZWL$20.00 but instead, the boy bought airtime worth $50.
The boy’s mother, Abigail Chindomu told H-Metro that she has relocated to her brother’s house in the same neighbourhood leaving one tenant at the house. She said:
<blockquote>The house was locked and I am staying at my brother’s house since the Madamombe family is yet to settle their issues with the Nyamukachi family on the cleansing of the house.

Murdered Boy's Family Demands US$2 000 To Clean His Congealed Blood

A man from Harare crushed his stepson’s head with a hammer following a misunderstanding over the purchase of airtime recharge cards, police have confirmed.
Through their Twitter account, the police said the man gave his son US$1.00 to buy airtime worth ZWL$20.00.
However, the boy used the whole amount, which is approximately ZWL$90, to buy the airtime and this angered his stepfather who then took a hammer and pounded his head. Police said:
<blockquote>A Harare man has been arrested in connection with the murder of his stepson on the 7th of February 2021. The suspect gave the victim US$1-00 to go and buy airtime worth RTGS$20-00.
The victim used the whole amount to buy airtime and this angered the suspect who pounded the victim with a hammer and he died.
Police urge the public to respect the sanctity of human life.</blockquote>
The man, who has not been named, was expected to appear in court on murder charges.

Harare Man Crushes Stepson's Head Over Z$20 Airtime

NetOne Zimbabwe has introduced an electronic airtime top-up service premised at increasing customer convenience by buying and distributing airtime virtually.
The development was announced by a senior NetOne executive, Ms Elmah Dube, in her speech during a stakeholder cocktail event hosted by the company in Bulawayo last Friday. Dube said:

There is no need for physical presence when you buy and distribute airtime.
NetOne has largely gone paperless. This brings about great convenience as airtime can now be moved 24/7 thus greatly reducing stock outs.
We also ensured there are no charges when sending float (airtime) to other dealers or vendors or on a vendor to vendor transfers. What is sent is what is received and sold.

The service is introduced when the country is still grappling with the coronavirus pandemic which seems to have gained momentum lately. 
Dube added that NetOne also introduced a discount of 11 percent with a minimum order quantity valued at only ZWL$1,000 saying this “clearly shows that this service is for everyone.”
NetOne has also launched its “GigaThanks Promotion”, which will run until February 2021.

3 Reasons Why You Should Buy Your Airtime On Pindula

Director General of the Postal and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ), Dr Gift Machengete, has defended the recent tariff hikes by mobile network operators (MNOs), Econet, NetOne and Telecel.
Machengete revealed that local data tariffs compare favourably with those charged in regional countries and that MNOs did not really raise data tariffs but only revised the promotions they were offering.
Speaking at the launch of a shared base station in Zhombe over the weekend, Machengete said:

In this regard, the authority will continue exploring ways of making tariffs more affordable including ensuring improved network efficiencies and lobbying government to reduce taxes on airtime, among other strategies.</blockquote>

POTRAZ Lobbying Govt To Reduce Tax On Airtime

A consumer rights watchdog, the National Consumer Rights Association (Nacora) has launched a campaign against expensive data tariffs being charged by local mobile network operators.
In an interview with the Southern Eye, Nacora advocacy and campaigns adviser, Effie Ncube said:
<blockquote>Let us not forget that this low-cost data campaign is about justice and fairness. We have a lot of weapons we will deploy against this theft and profiteering.
We will do media campaigns, public meetings, engage Potraz, government and service providers like Econet, Netone, Telecel, Africom, among others.
There cannot be any justification, whatsoever, why any service provider to maintain these exorbitant prices for data. It is an unfair trade and bad business practice.
Data drives economic activity and is critical to the sustenance for security and livelihoods of poor families throughout the country.
There can be no justification, whatsoever, why any service provider can resist unused data to roll over and be transferable like Airtime.
Default out-of-bundle browsing is theft of the highest kind. Millions continue to lose their hard-earned money to this monster. Out-of-bundle browsing must only take place when activated by the consumer.</blockquote>

In a statement yesterday, Econet said its subscribers are not facing disappearing data or airtime problems on their network and advised clients experiencing the challenges to contact the company.
The statement by Econet comes at a time when its customers are complaining about missing data, especially on their daily and weekly packages.Said Econet:
<blockquote>Econet maintains that there is no disappearing balance problem on their network, and that where a customer experiences a change in balance that they cannot explain, they should immediately raise the matter with the company through its call centre or shops, or use its web self-care service, which is available for customers to monitor and track their usage of data or airtime from anywhere, at any time.
To prevent this, we introduced Out-Of-Bundle Blocking, which stops background data usage from occurring. We are pleased to say to date we are the only local Mobile Network Operator that offers this convenience, and many of our customers have signed up to use this feature.
We are not aware of any customer airtime or data consumption that we have not been able to account for and resolve. Any customers in need of assistance in this regard should call any of our contact centres, shops or service centres for personal customer support.</blockquote>

There's No Disappearing Airtime Problem Says Econet

Responding to questions in Parliament last week, Minister of Health and Child Care Dr David Parirenyatwa said Government has raised $22 million from a levy imposed on airtime. The money was raised by collecting five cents from the sale of airtime recharge cards.
Parirenyatwa said the money will be used to procure drugs and other accessories at public health institutions. Said Parirenyatwa:
<blockquote>We have had a Health Levy Fund where we take five cents of every dollar to those who are using cellphones. So if you phone and your bill is a dollar, we take five cents from there and put it into Health Levy Fund. To date, this has raised $22 million and we have taken up to $16 million to purchase drugs and other accessories. These are now mostly, at the national pharmaceutical company. I am quite certain that within the next few weeks, there will be a sizeable difference in terms of supply of medicines in our institutions. The challenge that we have is that we could have used more money but the constraint has been foreign currency allocation.</blockquote>
