The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has launched an investigation into allegations that some players in the Young Warriors squad may have manipulated their ages to qualify for the COSAFA Under-20 tournament.
The Young Warriors, coached by Orlando Pirates youth coach Simon Marange, were scheduled to depart for Maputo, Mozambique, on Monday night in preparation for their opening match on Thursday.
Due to the absence of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for the Under-20s, ZIFA has been relying on information provided by the players, their coaches, and the identity documents submitted to verify their ages.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zifa-probe-young-warriors-ages/">The Herald</a>, ZIFA technical director Jethro Hunidzarira said that their initial investigation indicated that “everything is above board.”
He said they have engaged the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage and the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council to assist in their inquiries. Said Hunidzarira:

We have investigated and ended up at ZIMSEC and Home Affairs verifying.
We also asked all the players to fill in affidavits stating that the documents and the information they provided were true.
We then followed up with the suspects and although their documents look okay, we have gone further and checked with ZIMSEC.
So, we are giving them (players) the benefit of the doubt and allowing them to travel but if the investigations show otherwise, whoever would have been caught will be recalled.
Unfortunately, at ZIFA there are no records so we rely on what the coaches give us and a player’s record on the FIFA Connect.
When we came in there was no proper hand-over-take-over and we had to start from scratch with no records. 
Indeed, the lack of records makes it very difficult to prove that someone has tampered with his age.

ZIFA is checking if all the players in the Young Warriors Under-20 soccer team are the right age. They don't have MRI to check, so they are using documents and interviews. They are also asking the players to swear that they are telling the truth. The team is getting ready to play in a tournament in Mozambique. ZIFA has talked to the Government and schools to help with the investigation. The team will still go to the tournament, but if anyone is cheating with their age, they will be sent back. The team is in Group A with three other teams.

No Age Cheats In Warriors Under-20 Squad - ZIFA

Zimbabwe football legend Moses Chunga says stiff sanctions should be imposed on football stakeholders involved in age-cheating.
Bambo, as the nomadic coach is affectionately called, believes age-cheating has been allowed to go on for a long time in domestic football when the practice should have been eradicated a long time ago.
Chunga is famous for his “Kidsnet” project at Dynamos in the mid-2000s when his squad included a number of talented youngsters who illuminated the domestic football scene.
The former Soccer Star of the Year runs the Moses Bambo Chunga Academy which he hopes to use as a model for grassroots football development.
Speaking in an interview with The Herald on Thursday, the 54-year-old former Dynamos midfielder said age-cheating is holding back the development of junior football in the country. He said:

Sometimes I feel like laughing when we talk about age-cheating in this era.
But it’s a pity because this thing has been going on since time immemorial.
It’s in human nature to cheat, the human species is good at that but since we are the ones doing it we are also capable of fixing it.
Age-cheating has to stop if we want the best for our children. We make them accomplices in our acts of dishonesty.
But I have an idea which I think can help. We can do it the easy way, let’s say by normalising what looks abnormal.
In the future tournaments to be hosted by the Moses Bambo Chunga Academy, each team will be allowed two over-aged players in every age group.
Even at the Olympics where the national Under-23 teams play, it is allowed.
If you continue to have an appetite to cheat under such an arrangement, then you need your head to be examined.
Tougher sanctions should be given against people who use unsuspecting kids to promote that vice.

Last week, Dynamos was kicked out of the inaugural Marvelous Nakamba tournament in Bulawayo after fielding a 22-year-old man at the Under-17 tournament.

Age Cheating: Moses Chunga Calls For Stiff Sanctions

Veteran football administrator Ndumiso Gumede has sarcastically said the only regret from the national Under-17 COSAFA Championship disqualification was that of being caught.
The former ZIFA vice president and current Highlanders Football Club president said Zimbabweans have normalised age-cheating to such an extent they are no longer ashamed. He posted on Twitter:
<blockquote>Our disqualification from the ongoing Cosafa Under-17 tournament in South Africa because of alleged age cheating as one ‘young’ Zim player failed an MRI scan should normally be an embarrassment. But we are used to cheating that we only regret being caught out.</blockquote>
This comes after the Zimbabwe Under-17 national team were on Friday sent packing from the Under-17 COSAFA Championship for age-cheating following a Magnetic Resonance (MRI) Imaging scan tests done by the regional soccer body.
The Young Warriors were expelled from the tournament alongside Botswana, Comoros Islands and Eswatini.

The Premier Soccer League has taken steps to eradicate cheating which is considered to be rampant in local football.
In a statement, the PSL, through its communications and media liaison officer, Kudzi Bare, said last week that teams are now required to produce the educational history of junior players. The Communique reads as follows:
<blockquote>Clubs are expected to submit signed contracts, unconditional clearance letters, certified copies of national identity cards and birth certificates for Under-19 players, educational history, signed medical examination forms and international transfer certificates for players coming from foreign leagues.</blockquote>

PSL Moves Eradicate Age-Cheating In Players

The National Association of Secondary School Heads (Nash) is considering acquiring a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine to curb age cheating by some schools.
Speaking to The Chronicle, NASH national Vice President Arthur Maphosa confirmed that they were considering buying a MRI machine. Said Maphosa:
<blockquote>We are seriously interrogating that scientific approach of vetting because we realise that mere eyes can be deceiving. Our worry could be the cost of the MRI machine, but we believe it would be a worthy investment because we note with serious concern that some schools are just too eager to win and will use every dirty trick to achieve that.</blockquote>

NASH considers acquiring MRI machine to curb age cheating

The <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Premier_Soccer_League">Premier Soccer League</a>’s disciplinary committee has fined <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Bulawayo_City_Football_Club">Bulawayo City Football Club</a> with a $2 500 for using over-age players in their developmental ranks. The players concerned, Lewis Ncube, Dean Pelius Sibanda and Bothwell Nyathi were also found guilty and have received 12 month bans with 3 months suspended on condition the players do not within that period commit a similar offence.
The trio used fraudulent documents which led to them being registered in the development quota, reserved for Under-20 players at the beginning of the year. The club is expected to pay $2,000 by end of this month, with the remaining $500 suspended for the remainder of the 2017 season on condition the club is not convicted of any offence involving dishonesty.
The club contravened order 31.2.8 of the PSL rules and regulations, that is knowingly furnishing incorrect information, of whatsoever nature to the PSL.
