Former President of South Africa, Thabo Mbeki, criticised his successor, Jacob Zuma, at the African National Congress (ANC) party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) Lekgotla (meeting). Mbeki spoke at the ANC’s elections commission after the National Executive Committee decided to suspend Zuma for violating the party’s constitution, <a href="https://www.sabcnews.com/sabcnews/mbeki-hits-out-at-zuma-at-nec-lekgotla/?s=08">SABC News</a> reported.
Mbeki referred to Zuma’s tenure as Head of State and party President as counter-revolutionary years that brought failure and disaster to the ANC. He specifically mentioned the deliberate attempt to undermine the South African Revenue Services (SARS) during Zuma’s ten-year term. Mbeki accused Zuma of being involved in the capture and takeover of SARS and later Eskom. He said:

He (Zuma) was directly involved in capturing and taking over SARS and subsequently Eskom.
He took over the process of destruction, him and Tom Moyane aggressively so.

According to Mbeki, Zuma’s actions significantly contributed to the negative narrative surrounding the ANC government today. He contrasted the period between 1994 and 2007, when the country’s economy was performing well, with the dramatic changes that occurred from 2008 onwards.

ANC Resolves To Suspend Zuma, Mbeki Criticises His Successor

The All African Alliance Movement (AAAM) has shown its support for the newly established political party Umkhonto We Sizwe ahead of the upcoming general elections in 2024. The AAAM, an organisation of church leaders, expressed support when former President Jacob Zuma – the face of Umkhonto We Sizwe –  addressed religious leaders in Soweto, Johannesburg. Zuma expressed his intention to campaign for and vote for the Umkhonto We Sizwe Party.
The Secretary General of the AAAM, Bishop Meshack Tebe, called on everyone to unite and vote for Umkhonto We Sizwe to achieve a two-thirds majority in the polls. Bishop Meshack Tebe said:

We want to call everyone that in order for us to achieve the 2/3rds majority in the polls. Come let us join forces and vote together and vote for Umkhonto We Sizwe.

Some members of the religious sector have expressed concern about the current state of the country and have chosen to support the newly formed MK political party in the upcoming elections.
During his address, Zuma praised the religious leaders for taking a stand and questioned why the issues faced by people living in informal settlements were not being addressed. He emphasised the need for discussions and actions to improve the lives and rights of the people of South Africa. Zuma also raised the issue of voting secrecy, suggesting that the voting process should be more transparent, with votes being counted in public view. He said:

Who are the people that live in informal settlements? In whose land? Why are we not fixing this? What are we scared of? This does not need war, it needs discussions among people that we fix the lives and rights of the people of South Africa.

Instead, he will vote for the uMkhontho weSizwe (MK) party, which is registered with the Electoral Commission of SA. Zuma made this announcement through a statement read by his daughter Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, as he was not feeling well.
Zuma expressed his dissatisfaction with the current state of the ANC, stating that it has changed from the party he joined 64 years ago. However, he mentioned that he could never completely leave the ANC and would always consider himself a member. He expressed disappointment in the practices introduced by his successor, President Cyril Ramaphosa, which he believes are different from the traditional values of the ANC. He listed a long list of complaints. Zuma-Sambudla read on her father’s behalf:

Some ANC leaders have asked me to campaign for the ANC in the 2024 elections. For the reasons Ihavestatedandmanyothers that I will share with the public in the coming months, I have decided that I cannot and will not campaign for the ANC of Ramaphosa in  2024. My conscience will not allow me to lie to the people of South Africa and to pretend that the ANC of Ramaphosa is the ANC of Luthuli, Tambo and Mandela. It is not the ANC that I joined and went to jail for. In this regard I fully agree with other former leaders like Comrade Thabo Mbeki and others that it would be a betrayal to campaign for the ANC of Ramaphosa. However, I also believe that it is not enough to withdraw from the ANC campaign which will lead our people to more misery, poverty, racism, unemployment, deepening loadshedding and a government led by sellouts and apartheid collaborators. It is also our duty to guide our people on what to do in order to save our revolution from its enemies and to achieve the society envisaged in the Freedom Charter.
I therefore wish to announce that in 2024, I will vote for the UmkhontoWeSizwe (MK)Party. It has already been registered with the IEC with my knowledge and blessings, in response to various pleas expressed to me by some religious leaders, traditional leaders, former combatants and other leaders in society. I call on all South Africans to join me in taking the important step and to vote for the MK Party and any other progressive party which seeks total liberation and the return of our land to its rightful owners, the African people. The task ahead requires young and older leaders alike to pull in the same direction. No single organisation can pull us out of the present crisis. We require the same spirit of unity which saw us defeating the monster of Apartheid.

Zuma stated that he has been holding meetings with various leaders, including political parties, to unite the historically oppressed in South Africa. He said they are discussing the formation of a Patriotic Front and a voting bloc after the 2024 election to pursue a minimum consensus program of no more than 10 points of agreement to address the present crisis. Zuma said the ultimate goal is to achieve total liberation from colonialism by uniting Africans across the country, continent, and diaspora in the fight for land, justice, and radical economic transformation towards economic freedom. Zuma emphasized that reconciliation cannot occur without socio-economic justice and equality.

Jacob Zuma Says He Won't Campaign For Ramaphosa's ANC, Instead Plans To Vote For uMkhontho weSizwe

South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the country’s third biggest political party, organised a protest outside the Israeli embassy in Pretoria. Party leader Julius Malema called for the embassy’s closure, criticizing Israel’s government for its actions in the conflict with Palestine.
Malema also urged retailers to remove Israeli products from their shelves by the end of October. Malema said:

If they don’t remove products from Israel, we’ll remove them ourselves. We don’t want Israeli products sold in South Africa, we don’t want food from people who have the blood of innocent people on their hands.

The EFF declared their support for Palestine and vowed to send arms to Hamas if elected in the 2024 elections. They demonstrated in solidarity with Palestine and emphasized their opposition to neutrality in the Israel-Palestine conflict. Malema argued that progressive governments should provide military and food aid to Palestinian freedom fighters.
The EFF intends to pressure the government to close the Israeli embassy until Palestine achieves freedom. The protests reflect a broader sentiment in South Africa, with some individuals expressing concerns that the ANC fails to consider the “Jewish side of the story” in the conflict. The EFF’s stance aligns with a growing global movement advocating for Palestinian rights and criticising Israel’s policies.
The African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party, also held a similar protest outside Israel’s embassy on Friday and called for a boycott of Israeli imports.

Former ANC Secretary-General, Ace Magashule, has established a new party called the African Congress for Transformation (ACT). Despite being expelled from the ANC due to corruption allegations, Magashule reportedly remains popular among certain left-leaning voters.
Analysts suggest that the formation of the new party could further erode support for the ANC, which has faced accusations of corruption and mismanagement. Polls indicate that the ANC’s vote share may drop below 50 percent in the 2024 elections.
Magashule stated that ACT aims to advocate for all South Africans, offering a new home for those who feel betrayed, fatigued, or homeless. He defended his ally Jacob Zuma, claiming that he was unfairly targeted in a witch hunt for challenging white monopoly capital. Magashule told a press briefing in Soweto:

Magashule faces charges of corruption, fraud, and money laundering. These charges stem from allegations that he misappropriated public funds designated for the removal of asbestos from government-built homes. The investigation suggests that more than $12 million intended for the asbestos clean-up may have been embezzled.

Former ANC Secretary General Ace Magashule Forms New Party

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), is supporting Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s decision to end <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwean_Exemption_Permit_Visa/">Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs)</a>. Motsoaledi is appealing a court order that declared the termination of the permits to be unlawful and unconstitutional.
The ANC is also calling for tougher by-laws and tighter border controls due to challenges with illegal mining and drug trafficking. ANC First Deputy Secretary Nomvula Mokonyane stated that the party no longer believes that South Africa belongs to all who live in it and that the current ethos is not working for South Africans or neighbouring countries. Nomvula said:

 The issue related to our borders, we support comrade Motsoaledi.
We were a bit naive believing that South Africa belongs to all who live in it.
It’s not working for South Africans, nor is it working for the neighbouring countries. We have a challenge dealing with illegal mining, we have a problem with the drugs.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria ruled last month that South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Aaron Motsoaledi’s decision to terminate the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) was unlawful, unconstitutional and invalid. The ZEPs were set to expire at the end of 2021, but the ruling extended them by 12 months.
Motsoaledi’s department plans to appeal the court’s ruling and challenge the court’s ruling in the matter of the Zimbabwe Immigration Federation and his department. The minister stated that the court’s findings on the Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) were questionable, especially regarding public participation when a decision affects a specific category of persons, in this case, Zimbabwean nationals. He argues that the decision not to extend the ZEPs involves policy considerations that fall within the executive’s domain.

ANC Supports Ending Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs)

The <a href="https://wiki.pindula.co.zw/African_National_Congress">African National Congress</a>, the ruling party in South Africa, has said the country is not pulling out of the International Criminal Court (ICC) <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-to-pull-out-of-icc-ramaphosa/">as earlier announced</a> by President Cyril Ramaphosa. 
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the party said pulling out of the International Criminal Court was discussed by the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) as a last resort action, not something that was to be done immediately. Reads the statement issued a few hours after President Ramaphosa’s announcement:

<h2>CLARIFICATION OF ANC POSITION ON THE ICC</h2>
The African National Congress’s Secretary-General presented the discussions and decisions of the National Executive Committee to the public at a press conference earlier today. 25 April 2025. This presentation covered discussions and decisions of the National Executive Committee (NEC) on international relations issues including ANC’s position on the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Members of the NEC discussed the unequal and inconsistent way international law is applied and this includes the often-selective application of international criminal law by the ICC.
The NEC discussions highlighted the need to revitalize the Malabo protocol which would establish a continental criminal court that would complement the ICC as a court of last resort.
The NEC also discussed options to amend national legislation that would domesticate the Rome statute in manner reflects all the articles of the Rome Statute. This includes provision of article 98 of the statute that requires a waiver of immunities for persons charged by the ICC from third-party countries where there is no referral by the United Nations Security Council.
There are several jurisdictions across the world which were used as a benchmark for this approach for instance the United Kingdom domesticated the Rome Statute to incorporate the provisions of article 98.
The ANC’s post-NEC statement reflects the discussions of the NEC in this regard.
At the press conference, the Secretary-General provided a reflection on the NEC discussion to the extent that a withdrawal from the ICC was also raised. Importantly, it was raised as a measure of last resort that would arise if- and only if- the other options outlined above do not yield the desired results of fairness and consistency in the administration of international law.
In outlining this broad context of discussion, an unintended impression may have been created that a categorical decision for an immediate withdrawal had been taken. This is not so. We reiterate the resolution of conference remains our policy position until such a point where its implementation does not yield the required result. 
On the International Criminal Court, the NEC noted its 55th National Conference Resolution that the ANC and the South African government must rescind the withdrawal from the ICC Court and intensify its lobby for the ratification of the Malabo Protocol”.
The NEC aligns itself with a report of Amnesty Internationals Annual Report of 2022 which exposes double standards throughout the world on human rights and the failure of the international community to unite around consistently applied human rights and universal values.

ANC Says South Africa Is Not Pulling Out Of International Criminal Court

The African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party in South Africa, plans to pull out the country from the International Criminal Court (ICC).
This is the second time the ANC has attempted to do so. The decision was made after the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin on March 17, accusing him of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine.
President Cyril Ramaphosa told reporters during a state visit by Finnish president Sauli Niinisto:

The governing party, the African National Congress, has taken that decision that it is prudent that South Africa should pull out of the ICC, largely because of the manner in which the ICC has been seen to be dealing with (these) type of problems.
</blockquote>
Just two days before this announcement, South Africa’s parliament said it would stop its seven-year-long effort to withdraw from the ICC’s Rome Statute. This was because the ruling party had decided in December to stay in the ICC and work for changes from the inside, but now they have changed their mind and want to leave the ICC after all.
The international arrest warrant for Putin was issued after he had been invited to attend the BRICS summit in South Africa in August. If he comes to South Africa, he could be handed over to the ICC in The Hague.
South Africa’s official in charge of relations with BRICS countries confirmed that Putin had been invited by President Ramaphosa and Russia had indicated attendance. The Kremlin has not yet decided whether Putin will attend. If he does, it could restart the process to withdraw South Africa from the ICC, but that process takes a long time and is unlikely to be completed before the summit.
In 2016, three African countries – Burundi, the Gambia, and South Africa – announced their intention to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), leading to concerns that more countries would follow. However, only Burundi and South Africa formally communicated their decision to withdraw. The Gambia initially said it would withdraw but changed its mind after a new government was elected. Despite the African Union’s agreement for a collective withdrawal from the ICC, no other countries have left the court. South Africa revoked its notice of withdrawal in March after being forced to do so by its own courts for not following proper legal procedures. <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/10/27/burundi-first-to-leave-international-criminal-court">Burundi eventually withdrew in 2017.</a>
Some African leaders, including Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta, have criticized the International Criminal Court (ICC), calling it a “bunch of useless people,” a tool of global power politics, and not about justice.
Many Africans feel that the ICC disproportionately targets African countries and does not respect their sovereignty. However, ICC’s former prosecutor Fatou Bensouda dismissed these criticisms, noting that most cases were initiated by the countries themselves. 
Even as the AU was reported to have adopted a mass withdrawal strategy, some countries, such as Nigeria, opposed it, particularly the idea of leaving en masse.
Critics say that Sudan and Libya were referred to the ICC by the UN Security Council, even though three of the five veto-wielding countries on the council (China, Russia, and the United States) are not ICC members. These critics argue that the Security Council was quick to indict leaders of these two countries, but efforts to refer countries like Syria have been blocked by some of these same countries.

As far back as 2013, Kenya wanted sitting presidents to be exempt from trial while South Africa called for presidents’ immunity from prosecution to be respected.

South Africa To Pull Out Of ICC - Ramaphosa

John Steenhuisen, leader of the Democratic Alliance (DA), will lead a march to Luthuli House this Wednesday against power cuts which the party says were engineered by the ruling African National Congress (ANC).
The DA party is also marching against cadre deployment, tariff hikes, and corruption.

South Africa has been facing a power crisis in recent years, primarily due to a lack of investment in new power generation capacity and maintenance issues at existing power plants.

South Africa: DA Marches To Luthuli House Over The Power Crisis

Mangaung Metro Municipality, run by the ruling African National Congress (ANC), has blocked the party’s planned bash citing the poor state of the proposed venue. In a letter seen by Pindula News, the local government authority said there was no running water and all toilets were vandalised. Reads the letter:

<h2>RE: PREPAREDNESS OF DR RANTLAI MOLEMELA STADIUM TO HOST EVENTS</h2>
This report seeks to advise the event owner on the shortfalls at the Dr Rantlai Molemeta Stadium in preparation for the ANC January 8th event. The facility accommodates a total 15 500 attendees, which should include amongst other hawkers, staff etc. The accommodation figures will further be reduced when the stage is erected, as that part of the stadium will be regarded as non-usable. During the assessment or inspection, the following shortfalls were identified, which could render the stadium non—compliant. 
1. The northern part of the stadium sunk after the construction. Please note that even though the correction report was submitted, it still needs to be referred to the structural engineer for a periodical assessment. 
2. All toilet facilities have been vandalised, with all water taps (No running water) 
3. No electrical certificate 
4. No lire Safety Certificate 
5. Non-operational lifts 
6. Non-availability of VIP rooms (Suites) due to damages Noting all the above, and the financial position of the municipality, it will be difficult for the municipality to implement remedial action or correction within a short period of time, further this will prohibit the municipality to issue a grading certificate for the event to take place.
Taking the above into consideration, it is suggested that the Free State Rugby Stadium be looked as an alternative.

South Africa: ANC-run Municipality Blocks Party Bash, Cites Poor State Of The Venue

South Africa’s ruling party, African National Congress (ANC), on Friday, launched a conference that will eventually elect the party leader.
President Cyril Ramaphosa looks set to be re-elected as its leader, despite <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-ppsa-speaks-on-allegations-of-violation-of-ethics-code-against-ramaphosa/">a Phala Phala Farm cash-heist scandal.</a>
Ramaphosa is bidding to retain the reins of the ANC as the party struggles with rifts and declining support after 28 years in power.
Ramaphosa, portraying himself as a graft-busting champion, took control of the ANC in 2017 after his boss Jacob Zuma became mired in corruption affairs.
The party’s majority in parliament means that it also approves the national president.
But Ramaphosa’s clean-hands image has been dented by allegations he <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-ramaphosa-says-ive-never-stolen-money-from-anywhere/">concealed a huge cash burglary at his farm rather than report the matter to the authorities.</a>
Despite this, analysts say the 70-year-old leader remains on track to win the party leadership election, set to take place among delegates on Saturday. Said political writer Ralph Mathekga:

Even those who hate him need him to win.

A victory would secure him a ticket to a fresh term as president after the 2024 elections if his party wins that vote.
Ramaphosa won a reprieve ahead of the conference when the ANC used its majority in parliament to<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-ramaphosa-evades-impeachment-as-mps-vote-against-adopting-phala-phala-report/"> block a possible impeachment inquiry.</a>
This is despite that presidential aspirant, Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma, voted in favour of the adoption of the report.
He is leading the list of only two nominated presidential candidates so far and is seen to be the most viable in the absence of better options in the 110-year-old party.
The former trade union leader led the historic negotiations to end apartheid and helped draft the country’s constitution, hailed as one of Africa’s most progressive charters.
His rival is his former health minister Zweli Mkhize, who has corruption allegations linked to COVID-19 funds hanging over his head.
The venerable party was shaped by Nelson Mandela into the main weapon that ended apartheid.

South Africa: ANC Holds Conference To Elect New Leader

South Africa’s Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has said she is eligible to contest the presidency despite disciplinary proceedings by her party.
The ANC has instituted disciplinary proceedings against Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma after she <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/12/13/south-africa-ramaphosa-evades-impeachment-as-mps-vote-against-adopting-phala-phala-report/">voted with the opposition for the adoption of a panel report</a> that could have seen President Cyril Ramaphosa impeached over <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/20/south-africa-ppsa-speaks-on-allegations-of-violation-of-ethics-code-against-ramaphosa/">the Phala Phala farm robbery.</a>
In a statement seen by Pindula News, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma who is an ANC MP said the proceedings to not affect her bid to contest for the presidency. She wrote:

Dlamini-Zuma and other ANC MPs Mervyn Dirks, former North West premier Supra Mahumapelo and former minister and Gupta ally Mosebenzi Zwane, voted for the adoption of the report by an independent panel chaired by retired chief justice Sandile Ngcobo. 
The panel found that Ramaphosa may have a case to answer over the theft of at least $580,000 at his Phala Phala farm in 2020.
ANC MPs followed the party line at the special sitting of the National Assembly on Tuesday, voting to quash the report. Ramaphosa has taken the report on judicial review.
In a letter to Dlamini-Zuma, dated December 14, acting ANC secretary-general Paul Mashatile said the national officials received a report from party chief whip Pemmy Majodina regarding the outcome of the parliamentary vote on Tuesday. Said Mashatile:

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Says She's Eligible To Contest For The Presidency Despite Disciplinary Proceedings By ANC

The executive committee of South Africa’s governing ANC party met this Monday to consider the future of President Cyril Ramaphosa.
A parliamentary report has accused Mr Ramaphosa of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-ppsa-speaks-on-allegations-of-violation-of-ethics-code-against-ramaphosa/">misconduct and potentially violating the oath of office.</a>
Public Protector of South Africa’s inquiry relates to findings that large sums of foreign currency were hidden at Ramaphosa’s private game farm and he failed to report <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-ramaphosa-says-ive-never-stolen-money-from-anywhere/">the money missing when it was stolen in 2020.</a>
Ramaphosa has denied wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crimes. He has said the money stolen was the proceeds of the sale of buffaloes and far less than the millions of dollars alleged when the theft came to light in June.
Ramaphosa said on Sunday he would attend the meeting of the African National Congress National Executive Committee (NEC) and would accept its decision.
Party leaders and supporters of Ramaphosa clad in the colours of the ANC party were seen arriving at the venue of the meeting on Monday, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/south-africas-ramaphosa-awaits-anc-panel-decision-his-fate-2022-12-05/">Reuters</a>.
Having received firm backing from his allies within the party, Ramaphosa has vowed to fight on, with his spokesman saying the panel’s findings would be challenged.

ANC Leadership Meets Over President Ramaphosa's Future

The president of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has withdrawn the new ministerial handbook that gives perks such as free water and electricity to ministers and deputy ministers.
His spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told a press conference on Monday that Ramaphosa acknowledged the public sentiment on the matter, according to <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/southafrica/news/breaking-news-live-all-the-latest-news-alerts-from-across-south-africa-with-news24-20220601">News24.</a>
The amendment to the ministerial handbook was withdrawn after public outrage amid new perks to ministers and their deputies, which would see them enjoying free water and electricity at their official residences. 
It would also have seen ministers and deputy ministers entitled to employ more staff at a cost of R87 million to taxpayers.
Ramaphosa amended the handbook in April but the move was heavily criticised by DA MP Dr Leon Schreiber for being implemented “without taxpayers or parliament being informed”.s
Serving as shadow minister for public service and administration, Schreiber said the amendment appeared to be “an effort by Ramaphosa to implement the devious plan announced earlier this year by ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe to make taxpayers pay the salaries of ANC staffers”.
The handbook allowed the minister for the public service and administration to appoint an “unlimited number of other ANC cadres upon request from his fellow ANC cadres in Cabinet”.

South Africa: Ramaphosa Makes U-turn On Ministers, Deputies Perks

South Africa’s home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi has dismissed reports saying he extended the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwean_Exemption_Permit_Visa">Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs)</a> to June 2023 as a strategy to help the ruling ZANU PF to win elections scheduled for next year.
Motsoaledi <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/south-africa-home-affairs-minister-extends-zimbabwean-exemption-permit-full-text/">extended the ZEPs</a> in late August arguing that the department had at that time received few applications by Zimbabwean nationals for ordinary visas.
Motsoaledi had, throughout the year, vowed to not renew the expiring ZEPs, meaning its holders would have to return home at the end of 2022.
Civil society organisation, the Helen Suzman Foundation (HSF), which had launched a legal challenge against the planned cancellation, said it would continue with the court fight. It added;

There is now some speculation that the reason for this most recent six-month extension is that it is a sop to Zimbabwe’s ruling party, ZANU PF: delaying the return of those who fled its murderous policies until after the next elections, scheduled for April 2023, means they cannot vote against ZANU.

In response, Minister Motsoaledi dismissed the suggestion as a “ridiculous” and “bizarre conspiracy theory”. He said in a statement:

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ZNC) has called upon South Africans to unite against violent crimes which is the order of the day in that country. In a statement seen by Pindula News, ANC said the crimes highlight the severe problem of the proliferation of firearms in South Africa. The statement comes after <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/13/south-africa-two-arrested-over-bar-killings/">19 people were killed in taverns last Saturday.</a> Two people were arrested in connection with the murders. <h2>SOUTH AFRICA MUST UNITE AGAINST VIOLENT CRIME</h2>
The African National Congress calls on the country’s security services to work with communities and all social partners to combat violent crime.
The spate of recent deadly attacks on taverns and other public spaces is clearly intended to spread fear through communities and across the nation.
The ANC calls on the South African Police Service and other law enforcement agencies to dedicate personnel and resources to investigating these crimes and prosecuting those responsible. These investigations need to establish whether there is any connection between the various incidents and identify those responsible for directing them.
These crimes take place against the backdrop of increased poverty and unemployment in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the July 2021 unrest. They take place at a time when South Africans are experiencing a rise in the cost of living and the effects of load shedding.
These crimes highlight the severe problem of the proliferation of firearms in South Africa and the high levels of violence in our society. Part of our response to incidents of this nature is to address with urgency the social and economic conditions in which South Africans live.
It is vital that law enforcement agencies work closely with communities at a local level to improve community safety, intelligence gathering and policing. The ANC supports the work of the SAPS to re-establish Community Policing Forums. and calls on all communities to ensure that they are functioning and respond to the concerns of the people.
Through the Letsema Campaign, ANC branches will work with all residents and community formations to strengthen crime prevention efforts across the country. They will also support the Molo Makhelwane programme of the ANC Women’s League to encourage people to know their neighbours, secure communities and take forward the fight against gender-based violence. 
The ANC welcomes the progress that has been made in strengthening the crime-fighting capacity of the state, including: 
– the recruitment of the first cohort of 12.000 new police personnel. 
– the framework for the nationwide re-establishment of community policing forum 
– the establishment by the SAPS of multi-disciplinary units to address crimes of economic sabotage and extortion at construction sites by so-called business forums, 
– the operationalisation of the Border Management Authority, including the deployment this week of the first cohort of 200 guards to vulnerable border posts.
The ANC is concerned by the reckless posturing of some political parties and groupings, who are seeking to use these senseless killings for political gain. If we are to stop this onslaught against communities, we need to work together as all South Africans to find and prosecute those people who want our people to live in fear. We need to work together with the police and other security services to make our homes, streets, businesses and public spaces safe and secure.

The African National Congress (ANC) notes the draconian decision by the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Russia and its entireties including global media organizations following the escalation of hostilities between Ukraine and Russia.
Subsequently, this has resulted in the South African Multichoice platform unilaterally withdrawing Russian TV from its offerings, impacting negatively on the freedom of choice to subscribers and limiting their consumption of news on the developments in the Ukraine — Russia conflict.
The ANC believes that this censorship act done in bad faith during Human Rights Month in South Africa undermines subscribers freedom of association and negatively impacts on the need for plurality of views and media freedom which is sacrosanct and provided for in our constitution.
The reasons conveyed by MultiChoice in seeking to justify this censorship act are quite bizarre and lack any legal and humane justification. Stifling the plurality and diversity of views undermines internationally agreed principles on freedom of speech, choice and association.
The ANC condemns in the strongest terms possible any form of bias by media conglomerates in South Africa which limits the plurality and diversity of views. Even at this late hour, the EU must still provide legal justification for this course of action. Our own competition commission should also act to safeguard the interest of subscribers of Multichoice by quantifying the loss and demanding of such to be reimbursed. The ANC also calls on Multichoice to reconsider its decision of censorship and immediately reinstate Russian TV on its platform.

South Africa: ANC Criticises EU For Sanctions On Russia, Rebukes Multichoice For Removing Russian TV

Members of the African National Congress (ANC), the governing party in South Africa, Saturday stormed the venue where eThekwini Municipality was sitting.
The venue has also been hit by an unexplained power cut.
Proceedings have been going slow in the metro.
Opposition parties are accusing the ANC of trying to collapse the meeting.
Democratic Alliance (DA) eThekwini mayoral candidate, Nicole Graham, <a href="https://www.enca.com/news/anc-supporters-storm-ethekwini-municipality-council-sitting">told eNCA that the ANC is deliberately frustrating the meeting.</a>
She said ANC is realising that it could lose the governance of the city hence the chaos to disrupt proceedings.
The ANC is in control of the eThekwini Metro but needs to find at least 15 more seats from coalition partners if it wants to rule.
While the ANC remains the leading party, it lost 30 seats in the 2021 elections in comparison to the 2016 Local Government Elections.

South Africa: ANC Update On Coalition Talks

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) announced the formation of a coalition negotiations team, and along with it, released a list of demands.
The list, compiled for the benefit of the African National Congress (ANC) – is quite comprehensive and covers everything from land expropriation and nationalisation to Die Stem.
The EFF said the coalitions negotiations task team consists of Deputy President Floyd Shivambu and National Chairperson Veronica Mente.
Other members include Secretary-General Marshall Dlamini, Commissar Hlengiwe Mkhaliphi, Commissar Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, and former chairperson Adv. Dali Mpofu.
The party said: “In essence, those who have approached the EFF must be prepared to agree and support these principles and general commitments with deadlines”.

ANC Dismiss Reports Saying It Intends To Suspend Head Of Presidency Sibongile Besani

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress (ZNC) has withdrawn an application with the Electoral Court which sought an order that directs the Independent Electoral Commission to amend the electoral timetable.

On 26 August 2021, the African National Congress indicated that it would lodge an application with the Electoral Court requesting it to order the Independent Electoral Commission to amend the electoral timetable and reopen the opportunity to register candidates in terms of Section 11(2)(a) of the Local Government: Municipal Electoral Act. 
We did so after a number of parties failed to register all their candidates for local government elections. This failure was due to a combination of technical challenges on the IEC’s online candidate registration system and the pressure placed on candidate selection by restrictions on meetings to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. These factors led former Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke to conclude that it would not be possible to hold free and fair elections on 27 October 2021. These factors. and this conclusion, led the IEC to approach the Constitutional Court to extend the deadline by which to hold local government elections. 
The ANC sought to follow the most rigorous, inclusive and participatory process to identify candidates that would enjoy the confidence of the people and represent them with integrity, commitment and competence to improve service delivery and create a better life for all. 
We brought this application to protect the rights of hundreds of thousands of citizens who will be deprived of the right to vote for a candidate of their choice as a result of the inability of the party of their choice to register its candidates. 
As a majority party in government at national, provincial and local level, and a leader of society, the ANC has a broader responsibility to protect, strengthen and deepen our system of multiparty democracy, a system which constitutes one of the foundational provisions of our Constitution. 
Accordingly, in view of the fact that the matter is before the Constitutional Court, the ANC has decided to withdraw its application and to await the judgment of the Court.

In a Saturday statement, the party said it wants to assure everyone, that its challenges will be resolved by initiatives including increasing membership fees and levies.
The party also said it had already agreed with provinces to take over the salary bill in provinces adding “this came to effect in the past two months.”

South Africa: ANC Pleads For Financial Assistance

South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC) has denied reports that its Treasurer General, Paul Mashatile, received money donations from a selection of business people. Pindula News presents a statement issued by the ANC on the matter.

The Office of the ANC Treasurer General Comrade Paul Mashatile has noted with concern a misleading statement by faceless people who allege that a selection of business people donated money to the Treasurer General. The TG wants to place on record that the claim is not only false but also malicious and plays on the current challenges facing the ANC. 
We view these fake news as designed to further cause confusion on the matter of staff salaries. We want to assure everybody that our challenges will be resolved based on a number of initiatives approved by the National Officials. These include crowdfunding. increasing membership fees and levies. We have already agreed with provinces to take over the salary bill in provinces and this came to effect in the past two months. 
The ANC remains committed to resolving outstanding issues of delayed salaries.

The statement is issued as the party has been forced to scale back its campaigning ahead of upcoming municipal elections because it has run short of cash.
Paul Mashatile on Thursday said ANC will have to “tighten the belt,” adding that the party will do “what is economically affordable to us.”
Commenting on ANC’s financial crisis, some South Africans said the situation reflected what the ordinary citizenry is facing on a daily basis.
In the past, there were reports that the party was being funded by the Gupta family which in turn was indirectly influencing the country’s affairs.

ANC Denies Receiving Donations From Business People

Jacob Zuma, a former president of South Africa has asked the African National Congress (ANC) to release its financial records. This is in relation to the Armsdeal payments – the “Strategic Defence Packages” which involved the procurement of arms for the defence of South Africa in early 1998. The “Preferred Bidders” of the historic Strategic Defence Packages was approved by the South African Government Cabinet on 18 November 1998. It is alleged that Zuma was involved in corruptly offering protection to persons and/or companies with a commercial interest in the Strategic Defence Packages in return for personal financial benefits. Zuma denies most vehemently that he was involved in any corrupt relationship with anyone including anyone who had an interest in the Strategic Defence Packages or that he had any personal financial benefit from these transactions in any manner including a corrupt manner. Pindula News presents a letter written by Zuma’s lawyers to ANC Treasurer-General Paul Mashatile.

Dear Sirs 
RE: REQUEST FOR INFORMATION IN RE STATE v ZUMA CASE NO. CCD30/2018 
1. We act for former President of the Republic of South Africa and the ANC, Mr Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma, (“Mr Zuma”) from whom we have instructions to address this letter to you in your capacity as the Treasury General of the ANC. As you will no doubt confirm, our client is a committed and principled member of the ANC in good standing and the Ex Officio member of its National Executive Committee (“the NEC”). His years of membership, loyalty and dedication to the objectives and work of the ANC is unquestionable. You will have his record of membership in the ANC as its former Deputy Secretary-General, Chairperson, Deputy President and President which attests to his dedication to the cause of the ANC in ensuring that it continues to use it extensive radical political mandate to champion socio-economic and political objectives that improve the lives of all South Africans. We are instructed that the ANC’s commitment to combating corruption is unquestionable and we should not hesitate to request information from it that will assist in ensuring that any investigations into corruption allegations involving its members will immediately be made public and referred to the appropriate authorities for attention. We write in that assurance of your readiness to willingly grant us access to the information that we set out in paragraph 8 of this letter. 
2. As you are aware, our client Mr Zuma has been charged by the National Prosecuting Authority (“NPA”) in matters related to the “Strategic Defence Packages” which involved the procurement of strategic arms for the defence of the Republic in early 1998. The “Preferred Bidders” of the historic Strategic Defence Packages was approved by the South African Government Cabinet on the 18 November 1998. The then Deputy President of the ANC and the Republic, the Hon Mr Thabo Mbeki was also the Chairperson of the Cabinet Sub Committee overseeing the tender adjudication process undertaken by ARMSCOR on behalf of the Department of Defence, Department of Trade and Industry and Department of Finance. The recordings of the South African Government Cabinet meetings of October 1998 and November 1998 on the “Strategic Defence Packages” reflects that former President of the ANC and the Republic of South Africa, the Hon Dr Nelson Mandela was the presiding chairperson of these Cabinet meetings. 
3. As you are aware, both our client and Thint SA formally known as Thompson CSF of France have been charged with corruption and fraud arising from the procurement processes involving the Strategic Defence Packages and are currently appearing as accused number one and two in the Pietermaritzburg High Court. In particular, a significant component of the case against our client is that he was involved in corruptly offering protection to persons and/or companies with a commercial interest in the Strategic Defence Packages in return for personal financial benefits. In the judgement of the late Judge Hilary G Squires in 2005, our client was implicated as having used his positions in government (MEC of Economic Development in Kwa Zulu-Natal Province, Deputy President of the ANC and the Republic of South Africa, in a generally corrupt manner to advance the interests of persons and or companies that were involved in tendering for contracts in the Strategic Defence Packages. The allegations against our client resulted in him being expelled by former President Thabo Mbeki from the position of Deputy President on the basis that he was implicated in the judgment of the late former Judge Squires of corruption in the so-called arms deal procurement process. Our client denies most vehemently that he was involved in any corrupt relationship with anyone including anyone who had an interest in the Strategic Defence Packages or that he had any personal financial benefit from these transactions in any manner including a corrupt manner. 
4. We are in the middle of preparing for his defence in the aforementioned trial on the corruption, fraud and money laundering charges and are instructed that the ANC has information that is relevant to his defences. Important to our client’s defence is that he was not involved at all in offering any protection to any person or company in return for any financial rewards while he served the ANC as any capacities. He most certainly did not benefit in any manner from anyone in the Strategic Defence Packages in any capacity. To properly advance his defence, we have advised him to obtain relevant information that he is aware is within the custody or knowledge of the ANC which is relevant to the defence that he was not a beneficiary of any financial rewards arising from his various roles while serving the ANC. 
5. Our client instructs us that, as President of the Republic, he established a judicial commission of Inquiry into allegations of corruption and improper conduct in the awarding of contracts to companies and individuals in the Strategic Defence Packages. We are aware that the report of the so-called Seriti Commission of Inquiry was set aside by His Lordship the Judge President Mlambo on a number of grounds.
6. During the course of the investigation, our client became aware of an affidavit or evidence under oath submitted at the Commission by Col du Plooy of an investigative unit linked to the NPA and Mr Richard M Young of C2I2 implicating both the ex-ANC President (Dr Nelson Mandela), ex-ANC President (Mr Thabo Mbeki) and the ANC itself. Documentary evidence presented by Col Du Plooy and Mr Richard Young at the Commission relates to investigations conducted by the German Prosecuting Authority in Germany as well as the NPA in South Africa. These German-based investigations reveal that the ANC received a significant financial donation from the German Corvette shipbuilders just after the awarding of the four Corvette ship contract by the South African Government to the German Corvette Consortium. 
7. There is also an affidavit by Adv Ajay Sooklal, who at some point was Counsel for Thint SA and/or Thales and/or African Defence System Pty Ltd in South Africa in which he alleges that the ANC received further financial donations from Thint SA or parties acting on its behalf in order for the NPA not to bring charges of corruption against Thint SA and/or Thales and/or African Defence Systems and/or any of its appointed foreign Executives during the 2002 to 2004 in the South African lead NPA investigations into corruption relating to the corvette ship tender process. 
8. Our client, Mr Zuma, is acutely aware that the disclosure of these facts and the request for information related to these disclosures will be used as political propaganda against the ANC. He is deeply concerned that his request for this information will arm those opposed to its strategic position as the leader of our liberation and revolution to undermine its moral authority to speak and act on corruption, but he believes that it is unavoidable to disclose to the Courts where he must answer allegations of corruption, fraud and money laundering that the true financial beneficiaries of the transactions in the Strategic Defence Packages did not involve him. He must extricate himself from the narrative entrenched both in the ANC and outside that he was involved in the corruption that involved the procurement of arms in the so-called arms deal. His defence at the trial will require him to give the Court clear evidence demonstrating that he never used his many positions both in the party and government to personally or corruptly benefit from any financial transactions involving the Strategic Defence Packages. He is required to demonstrate that it was not possible for him as an individual and capacity in the party and government to have provided any protection from an honest investigation into the allegations of corruption that are allegedly involved in these transactions. After much consultation and consideration of the issues involved in his trial and for the purposes solely of defending himself against the scandalous allegations of corruption, fraud and money laundering, Mr Zuma requires the ANC to grant him access to the following information: 
8.1. List of all and any foreign payments received from any German-based Defence Industry companies associated with the Strategic Defence Packages during the 1997/1998 and 1999/2000 financial years; 
8.2. List of all and any foreign payments received from any French-based Defence Industry companies associated with the Strategic Defence Packages during the 1997/1998 and 1999/2000 financial year; 
8.3. List of all and any foreign and/or local payments received from any companies representing or making payment on behalf of Thint SA (France) and/or African Defence Systems Pty Ltd and/or Mr Alen Thetard a senior executive of the Thint SA during the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 financial years; 
8.4. List of all and any payments received from Mr Tony Georgiadis (a Greek citizen living in London) and/or any companies associated with Mr Tony Georgiadis during the 1997/1998, 1998/1999 and the 1999/2000 financial years; 
8.5. List of all and any payments received from Mr Yusuf Surtee and/or any company associated with Mr Yusuf Surtee and/or any immediate family member of Mr Yusuf Surtee during the 1997/1998, 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 financial years; and 
8.2. List of all and any foreign payments received from any French-based Defence Industry companies associated with the Strategic Defence Packages during the 1997/1998 and 1999/2000 financial year; 
8.3. List of all and any foreign and/or local payments received from any companies representing or making payment on behalf of Thint SA (France) and/or African Defence Systems Pty Ltd and/or Mr Alen Thetard a senior executive of the Thint SA during the 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 financial years; 
8.4. List of all and any payments received from Mr Tony Georgiadis (a Greek citizen living in London) and/or any companies associated with Mr Tony Georgiadis during the 1997/1998, 1998/1999 and the 1999/2000 financial years; 
8.5. List of all and any payments received from Mr Yusuf Surtee and/or any company associated with Mr Yusuf Surtee and/or any immediate family member of Mr Yusuf Surtee during the 1997/1998, 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 financial years; and 
8.6. List of all and any payments received from Mr Bill Venter and/or Mr Bill Venter immediate family members and/or the Alton Group of companies and/or Altech Defence Systems Pty Ltd during the 1997/1998, 1998/1999 and 1999/2000 financial year. 
9. The aforementioned information is necessary for our client’s defence in relation to the corruption, fraud and money laundering charges in which it is alleged that he used his position in the party and the government to offer protection to companies and individuals from the reach of law enforcement investigations into corruption in the Strategic Defence Packages. Please provide to our offices written responses to the above request by close of business on Monday, 26 July 2021, failing which we reserve our right to resort to legal processes to obtain access to the aforementioned information. We hope that it will not be necessary to do so but that it is sufficient to rely on the ANC’s own commitment to disclose information relevant to the investigation of corruption, fraud and money laundering.

Zuma Asks ANC To Release Financial Records

South Africa’s governing party, the ANC has called for calm and stability in Kwazulu Natal (KZN) following widespread protests over the arrest of former president <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Jacob_Zuma">Jacob Zuma.</a>
Starting Thursday, demonstrators have been torching vehicles and blocking roads demanding an immediate release of the former president.
Zuma has been in prison since Wednesday night serving a 15-month-long jail term for contempt of court. Pindula News present ANC statement.

The African National Congress (ANC) is concerned by the ongoing violence that is gripping some parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). The destruction of property and infrastructure and looting accompany these violent protests must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
The ANC recognises and respects the rights of every South African to protest peacefully and unarmed and freely to express their views on any matter of concern. However, in exercising their constitutional rights, citizens must respect the rights of others and refrain from breaking the law or using violence. In a constitutional democracy, any matters of concern must be expressed through peaceful and legitimate channels.
We are concerned that the destruction of property and impeding the functioning of the economy will undermine efforts to create jobs and improve the lives of citizens.

The ANC urges law-enforcement agencies to act firmly and expeditiously, within the law. against any form of lawlessness, public violence, damage to property and disruption of economic activity and service delivery.

Zindzi Mandela, the youngest daughter of South Africa’s first black president Nelson Mandela has died aged 59.
She came to international prominence in 1985, when the white minority government offered to release Nelson Mandela from prison if he denounced violence perpetrated by his movement, the Africa National Congress, against apartheid, the brutal system of racial discrimination enforced in South Africa at that time.
Zindzi Mandela read his letter rejecting the offer at a packed public meeting that was broadcast around the world.

South Africa’s ruling party, the African National Congress has announced that it will be marching against the country’s power utility, ESKOM over load-shedding.
ANC said that it will be marching this Wednesday, 26 February a development that was criticised by some who said the party should have just fired the ESKOM leadership.
The announcement comes after the Economic Freedom Fighters party led by Julius Malema has also announced its march on the 28 of this month over load-shedding and privatisation of the utility.
