Zimbabwe moved closer to qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after beating Namibia 3-1 at Orlando Stadium, Johannesburg on Monday evening. The Warriors now have 8 points in Group J.
The Warriors must avoid defeat against Kenya in their next match next month to secure a place in the finals.
Cameroon leads the group with 10 points after winning against Kenya in the other group fixture at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda.
Kenya sits third with 4 points, while Namibia has been eliminated with four losses.
The first half ended goalless, with Namibia having 58% possession. In the second half, Simba Bhora forward Walter Musona scored twice, and Prince Dube added the third goal.
Musona scored from a high ball in the 50th minute and converted a penalty after a handball in the box.
Dube, who came in as a second-half substitute, scored in the 89th minute following a low cross from Jordan Zemura.
Another substitute Godwin Eiseb pulled a goal back for the Brave Warriors at the stroke of full-time following a defensive error by the Warriors.
The Warriors had defeated Namibia 1-0 in their first meeting, allowing them to secure a maximum of six points from the Brave Warriors.

Samuel Eto’o has said he is baffled by South Africa’s performance on international platforms including the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The Cameroonian who is a former professional football player who played for top clubs like Barcelona, Inter Milan, and Chelsea, wonders why the South African national team, known as Bafana Bafana, consistently underperforms in the tournament. Eto’o believes that the South African League (PSL) is well-organised and one of the best in Africa, so he doesn’t understand why the national team doesn’t perform better. He told IOL:

Some people have suggested that the poor performance of Bafana Bafana could be attributed to the management of the football association, which is led by the ANC Mayor, a political party that is considered corrupt and inefficient. Zimbabwe <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Football_Team">Warriors</a>, who were recently <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/05/24/zimbabwe-expelled-from-2023-afcon-qualifiers/">barred from participating in the 2023 AFCON</a> qualifying tournament, were this week disqualified from the upcoming CHAN qualifiers where they had been drawn to face Malawi. 
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) had included them in both qualifiers on the condition that they get the FIFA suspension lifted two weeks before the opening matches. 
The first round, first leg matches of the CHAN qualifiers have been scheduled to be held between July 22 and 24. 
However, responsible authorities have indicated that the local football administration needed greater attention and they have since embarked on a restructuring process fronted by the Sports and Recreation Commission. 
CAF on Tuesday confirmed that the Flames of Malawi were through to the second round of the 2022 CHAN qualifiers without kicking a ball following Zimbabwe’s decision. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) received a letter from CAF confirming the development. Read the letter from CAF to FAM:

We are referring to the suspension of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Football_Association_(ZIFA)">Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)</a> by FIFA Congress from all football activities.

Therefore, we hereby confirm to you that the clause indicated in the draw procedures is applied: In case the suspension of Zimbabwe FA is not lifted 2 weeks before its first match, it will be considered loser and eliminated from the competition. 
Consequently, all the matches of Zimbabwe in the frame of the 1st round of the qualifiers of CHAN 2022 are now cancelled and consequently Malawi is qualified to the 2nd round of the qualifiers.

The Flames will now wait for the winner between Zambia and Mozambique in the second round of the CHAN qualifiers. 
This is the third time in two months that Zimbabwe has been disqualified from international competition due to the FIFA suspension. 
The Warriors, who last competed at the delayed 2021 AFCON finals held in Cameroon in February this year, have been sidelined from the 2023 AFCON qualifiers and the COSAFA Cup, which is currently taking place in South Africa.

England-based Warriors midfield anchorman Marvelous Nakamba has expressed his frustration at Zimbabwe’s exclusion from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) is currently suspended from international competitions by FIFA after the Zimbabwe Government, through the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), was deemed to have violated the world football governing body’s statutes by interfering in football matters.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a UNICEF press conference which was held in Harare on Tuesday ahead of the Day of the African Child commemorated on 16 June, Nakamba said:

It’s a question you should direct to people who are on that job. I think it’s disappointing for me and also for you and for everyone, but I don’t want to be in between and answering questions that (may get me into trouble).

Nakamba "Disappointed" To Miss Out On AFCON Qualifiers

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expelled Zimbabwe and Kenya from their respective groups ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
CAF made the drastic move after both nations failed to have their suspensions by FIFA lifted. Both Zimbabwe and Kenya were suspended by FIFA for political interference.
A statement issued by CAF on Monday, 23 May 2022, confirming Zimbabwe and Kenya’s expulsion from the qualifiers read:

As a consequence of having failed to have their suspensions by FIFA set aside, CAF has confirmed that both Kenya and Zimbabwe will not participate in the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 qualifiers.
The qualifiers will kick off on the first day of June 2022.
CAF had included them in the official draw earlier in April 2022 on condition that the suspension must be lifted two weeks before their first match day.
Kenya and Zimbabwe, suspended for political interference, have not yet met the criteria required by the FIFA Congress as a prerequisite for lifting their suspension. As a result:
<h2>Because of the suspension, the following will apply:</h2>
<ul>
<li>The two associations; Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA)will be considered losers and eliminated from the competition.</li>
<li>Groups C and K will be composed only of three teams and the order of the matches will be maintained in accordance with the match schedule that has been communicated to the teams after the draw.</li>
<li>The first and runner-up teams of those groups will qualify for the final tournament.</li>

Warriors die-hard supporter and 2019 Total AFCON final super-fan, Alvin ‘Aluvah’ Zhakata has been hospitalised in Yaounde, Cameroon after collapsing after the Malawi Vs Morocco Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals match.

He, unfortunately, arrived when the Warriors he had travelled to support had already been eliminated from the tournament.

2019 Total AFCON Final Super-fan, Alvin Zhakata Collapses After Malawi Vs Morocco Match

Zambia are on standby to play at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) should Zimbabwe be banned by FIFA before the tournament roars into life on Sunday.
Last month, football’s world governing body said a ban “may have to be imposed on” Zimbabwe unless the elected Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board was reinstated by the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) by 3 January.
This has not happened, giving Zambia hope they could contest the finals since they finished behind Zimbabwe in their AFCON qualifying group.
Zambian FA’s media officer, Sidney Mungala, told BBC Sport Africa that they hoped that FIFA would have resolved the Zimbabwe issue by now. He said:

We have followed keenly the development in Zimbabwe and have always remained open to being part of the Nations Cup if Zimbabwe is banned.
Given the length of the time, before the tournament kicks off, we would have hoped that this matter would have been resolved by now.

Mungala said in the event that Zimbabwe are indeed banned and without proper call-ups of players and timely notifications to their clubs, Zambia would expect the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA to intervene on their behalf. Added Mungala:

It would definitely present a challenge but we believe the Caf/Fifa regulations would be able to help us should the situation arise where we become part of the Nations Cup.
Additionally, we believe our players would relish the opportunity to represent their country at the continent’s biggest showpiece.

Zambia missed out on reaching the AFCON by a single point when finishing third behind second-placed Zimbabwe. Defending champions Algeria finished first in the group.
According to CAF regulations, any team that withdraws “after its qualification in the final tournament, but before its actual start, shall be replaced by the team classified next in the group”.
Alternatively, “in default, the group to which belongs the forfeiting team shall be composed of three teams” (as has happened before).

Zambia Ready To Contest AFCON Finals In Case FIFA Bans Zimbabwe

Warriors coach Norman Mapeza says he will not dwell on players who are not part of the squad set to do duty at the AFCON finals starting with a Group B match against Senegal on Monday.
Several key players missed the trip to Cameroon due to injury, that is, in the case of Marvelous Nakamba, Marshal Munetsi and Brendan Galloway, while Khama Billiat retired last year. Tendayi Darikwa was not included in the squad for personal reasons.
Mapeza said he would rather focus on the players that are available as they have the quality to represent Zimbabwe well at the tournament. He said:

We all respect Khama’s decision but let’s not take anything away from these boys.
If we keep on talking about the players who are not here, I don’t think we will be doing justice for these boys.

Warriors manager, Wellington Mpandare, on Monday revealed that Kuda Mahachi, Kundai Benyu and Petros Mhari were all fine after they limped off in the friendly against Sudan on Sunday.
He also said captain Knowledge Musona was expected to arrive this Tuesday while Admiral Muskwe was set to join the squad on Wednesday.
David Moyo and Tino Kadewere jetted into Yaounde on Monday night and on Tuesday, the duo took part in team training.
Meanwhile, Jordan Zemura is now unlikely to play in the tournament because of a COVID-19 outbreak at his English Championship side, AFC Bournemouth.

Mapeza Not Thinking About Absent Warriors Stars

The Warriors’ friendly game against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon that was supposed to take place this Tuesday has been called off.
Zimbabwe had lined up two friendly matches against Sudan and Cameroon in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals that kick off on 9 January.
The Warriors played Sudan on Sunday and this could be their only preparatory match in Cameroon before the tournament starts.
Team manager Wellington Mpandare on Sunday confirmed to The Herald that the proposed match with the Indomitable Lions will no longer take place. He said:

That game is no longer possible. Cameroon wanted to use the match venue for their opening game in the tournament but CAF advised that the venue is not available for use by any team five days before the start of the tournament, in line with the tournament rules.
So the Cameroonians wanted us to play on Monday (today) but we felt it was not ideal to play two games in successive days since we had another game lined up against Sudan (yesterday).

Cameroon wanted to use the Paul Biya Stadium as the venue for the friendly match with Zimbabwe.
The stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies of the 33rd AFCON edition.
The opening ceremony will take place this Sunday and will be followed by the match between the hosts, Cameroon and Burkina Faso.

Zimbabwe, Cameroon Friendly Match Cancelled

The country’s senior men’s national soccer team, the Warriors, is planning to play two friendly matches on 2 and 4 January in preparation for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon.
Team manager Wellington Mpandare said they have already reached an agreement to play Sudan on 2 January and are now finalising with Cameroon to play on 4 January. Said Mpandare:

We managed to secure a friendly match with Sudan on January 2 and we are finalising with Cameroon to play on January 4.
The players are motivated to come and represent the country, Musona is excited with his form, so we are looking forward to a good tournament in Cameroon.

Meanwhile, the Warriors arrived in Yaoundé, Cameroon on Thursday.
According to <a href="https://www.soccer24.co.zw/2021/12/30/just-in-warriors-arrive-in-cameroon/">Soccer24</a>, the team left Harare in two batches on Wednesday, with the first one leaving for Johannesburg, South Africa in the morning before the other one flew straight to Ethiopia in the afternoon.
Both batches met in Ethiopia and slept there before departing for Cameroon.
Europe-based players Jordan Zemura, Tinotenda Kadewere, Kundai Benyu, Admiral Muskwe and David Moyo will join the rest of the squad in Cameroon together with captain Knowledge Musona based in Saudi Arabia.

Warriors Court Cameroon For Friendly Match

The Sport and Recreation Commission (SRC) is unperturbed by a looming FIFA ban on Zimbabwe from participating in international football, less than two weeks before the 2021 AFCON finals start in Cameroon.
FIFA gave the SRC an ultimatum to reinstate the suspended Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board by 3 January or risk a ban.
However, SRC chairman Gerald Mlotshwa reiterated that they have not received any correspondence to that effect from FIFA and will only act when they receive official communication. Said Mlotshwa:

We don’t have any official correspondence from FIFA giving us any deadline for reinstatement.
What we have seen in the media is a letter purportedly from FIFA addressed to a suspended member of ZIFA.
</blockquote>
The FIFA letter was addressed to ZIFA Chief Executive Joseph Mamutse, who is also suspended by the SRC.
Meanwhile, football analyst Admire Muhimeke is of the view that 3 January is too close to the start of AFCON and it would be late for Zimbabwe to be withdrawn from the tournament. He said:

The deadline is January 3 but it does not mean a decision would be made there and then.
There is no way, at this time, Caf would agree to Zimbabwe being thrown out of the tournament.
Otherwise, it would kill the whole competition.

Sports Commission Defiant Despite Looming FIFA Ban

Warriors left-back Onismor Bhasera on Monday said they are targetting a place in the knockout stages of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which kicks off on 9 January in Cameroon.
Bhasera said the Warriors are not anxious about facing some of their star-studded opponents as the best team on the day will win. He said:

Our goal is to reach the knockout stage of the tournament this time around.
We have to do our job, the best team on the day will win it’s not about stars. We have to go out there and put in a shift, the result will always take care of itself.
What is important is to put in a shift, sometimes you lose but we have to leave everything on the field.
We are not worried about star-studded teams, we are just going there to work hard and encourage each other.

Zimbabwe is in Group B alongside west African football powerhouse, Senegal, Guinea and Malawi.
Senegal boasts of several European-based stars in its squad, among them Edouard Mendy (Chelsea), Abdou Diallo (Paris St Germain), Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Cheikhou Kouyate (Crystal Palace), Idrissa Gana Gueye (Paris St Germain), Sadio Mane (Liverpool), and Ismaila Sarr (Watford).
Meanwhile, the Warriors will be without Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba and Stade Reims’ Marshal Munetsi, who are both injured, as well as Khama Billiat who recently retired from international football.

Warriors Target AFCON Knockout Stage

The South African Football Association (SAFA) says Bafana Bafana will not qualify for the belated 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals even if Zimbabwe is disqualified.
Zimbabwe faces a possible ban from the tournament unless the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) reverses its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) board.
FIFA this week warned Zimbabwe, on the eve of the AFCON finals in Cameroon from 9 January to 6 February that the Warriors may face a ban unless ZIFA’s elected leadership regains full control.
The development sparked speculation in South Africa, especially on social media, that if Zimbabwe is disqualified, then Bafana Bafana will take their slot at AFCON.
South Africa finished third in their qualifying Group and were the best third-positioned finisher in all 12 groups on 10 points.
However, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruling is that should a team withdraw between qualifying for the Nations Cup and the start of the tournament, their four-team group become reduced to three. 
There is no replacement from outside for the team that will have been disqualified.
SAFA chief executive officer Tebogo Motlanthe confirmed that, even if Zimbabwe fails to resolve their issues and are banned, there would be no path for South Africa to qualify. Said Motlanthe:

First of all, I would say don’t get ahead of yourself because Zimbabwe might still resolve their issues.
But, yes, you are reading the rule correctly, so even if Zimbabwe were banned there would be no path for Bafana to still qualify.
I think people were just getting excited because CAF sometimes has the format in qualifying where the best runner-up or third-place team sometimes can qualify.

Article 86 of the regulations for the 2021 Nations Cup states:
<blockquote>
If a team withdraws after its qualification in the final tournament, but before its actual start, it shall be replaced by the team classified next in the group of the team in question.
In default, the group to which belongs the forfeiting team shall be composed of three teams.
</blockquote>
This means that if Zimbabwe is expelled from the 2021 AFCON finals, Guinea, currently the third-ranked side in Group B, would move up to occupy Zimbabwe’s current second ranking.
Group B would then become a three-team contest, involving top-ranked Senegal, Guinea in second and Malawi, who would move up from fourth to third.

Here Is Why SA Won't Replace Zimbabwe At 2021 AFCON

Former Warriors captain Benjani Mwaruwari has been appointed assistant Warriors coach ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals scheduled to take place in Cameroon in January and February.
Mwaruwari joins Mandla Mpofu and Taurai Mangwiro as head coach Norman Mapeza’s assistants and is set to be in Harare today.
ZIFA acting chief executive officer and spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela confirmed the development. He said:

Mwaruwari is now one of our assistant coaches and is expected to be part of the AFCON finals preparations.
</blockquote>
The 30-man provisional Warriors squad will begin training on 23 December in Harare and the final 23 players will be selected on 31 December.
Mwaruwari, a former Jomo Cosmos, Auxerre, Manchester City and Portsmouth striker, was initially appointed one of the three assistants during the World Cup qualifiers when Croatian Zdravko Logarusic was head coach.
He was left out of the Warriors technical team when Mapeza was named head on an interim basis to take charge of Zimbabwe’s final World Cup qualifiers.

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced a 30-man provisional Warriors squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
In a statement, ZIFA Communications &amp; Competitions Manager, Xolisani Gwesela said that the squad was named by the Warriors technical team, led by head coach Norman Mapeza.
Gwesela said the team will begin training on 23 December in Harare and the final 23 players will be selected on 31 December.

ZIFA Announces Provisional Warriors Squad For AFCON Finals

Bournemouth head coach Scott Parker has confirmed Zimbabwean international fullback Jordan Zemura will go to the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals provided he is fit.
Zemura (22), has missed the Cherries’ past seven league fixtures after picking up an ankle injury in October.
He had played every minute in the Championship until he was forced off during a 2-0 win at Reading.
Zemura is expected to be part of the Warriors squad when Zimbabwe takes on Senegal in their Group B opener in Cameroon on 10 January.
Asked about losing the Zimbabwean to the international tournament, Parker told the Daily Echo:

It will be a blow, yeah. I am not sure exactly what the exact state of play is on that.
Depending on how he does come out of this injury, because he has still got some bits to do, he is still not over the line here.
But yeah, in January he will be leaving, probably to go to the African Nations.

Should Zemura make it for AFCON, he will at least be absent from the Cherries until the Warriors’ final group game against Guinea on 18 January.

Scott Parker Expects Zemura To Be Fit For AFCON

Warriors coach Norman Mapeza is yet to speak to Benjani Mwaruwari, even though he has been in constant communication with his two other assistants, Taurai Mangwiro and Mandla Mpofu.
Benjani is the Under-23 head coach who by virtue of holding that post, is part of the senior team technical team.
Last week, Mapeza rejected reports claiming that he was unwilling to work with the former Warriors, Portsmouth, Manchester City and Jomo Cosmos striker as one of his assistants.
The Sunday News reported sources as saying Mapeza has been in consultation with Mangwiro and Mpofu as the camp date for the AFCON finals draws closer.
The 40-men provisional Warriors squad is expected to go into camp on 23 December ahead of their departure for Cameroon on 29 December. Said a source:

Mapeza "Reluctant" To Engage Benjani

Ngezi Platinum Stars playmaker Denver Mukamba has been included in the Warriors provisional 40-member squad scheduled to participate at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations Finals in Cameroon next month.
Mukamba, who once wore the squad’s armband back in 2012, was being ignored by coaches as his career went off the rails due to alcohol and drug abuse.
Mukamba was last called into the Warriors by axed Croatian gaffer Zdravko Logarusic when the team played in the Chan finals also held in Cameroon early this year.
The 2012 Soccer Star of the Year was a late addition to the squad but he and Ngezi Platinum teammate Wellington Taderera were dropped for the final two group games after an alleged fall-out with Logarusic.
Current Warriors coach Norman Mapeza, who has failed to win a single game in four World Cup qualifying assignments, has also been turning a blind eye to one of the best play-makers around.
Football analysts say with Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat, retiring from international duty and Ovidy Karuru inactive for the better part of the year, it is Mukamba who could be entrusted with play-making responsibilities in Cameroon.
Of the 40 players who have been called into the squad, already Brendan Galloway and Marshal Munetsi, have been ruled out due to injuries while the country. Fears abound that Marvelous Nakamba will not make it after sustaining an injury recently.

Denver Mukamba Included In Warriors Provisional Squad

The Warriors are scheduled to get into camp two days before Christmas, six days ahead of their departure for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Cameroon.
Wellington Mpandare, the manager for national teams, told State media that the Warriors will get together on 23 December, and then leave for Cameroon on 29 December.
Warriors interim coach Norman Mapeza has since named a 40-men provisional squad that have been submitted to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as per the tournament regulations.
Mpandare revealed that the final list of 23 players has to be handed in 10 days before Zimbabwe’s opening match at the AFCON. Said Mpandare:

He said the provisional squad of 40 players will be announced this week.

Warriors AFCON Camp To Start On 23 December

Warriors defender and Wigan Athletic captain, Tendayi Darikwa, has pulled out of the Warriors provisional squad for the Africa Cup of Nations after excusing himself for personal reasons.
Darikwa was among the 40 players provisional list that was registered with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) in November but he has excused himself once again.
He missed the last three Warriors matches citing pressing family commitments.
General Manager for national teams Wellington Mpandare confirmed that Darikwa is out of the AFCON Finals which begins in Cameroon early next month. He said:

Darikwa Has Pulled Out Of AFCON Finals

FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza has been reappointed as the head coach of the Warriors and will lead the squad at the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Cameroon. 
The appointment was done after consultations and guidance from the Sports and Recreation Commission.
In a brief note, ZIFA acting chief executive officer Xolisani Gwesela said the former Warriors midfielder and captain Mapeza has been officially retained as the national team coach.
Gwesela added that Mapeza was given the discretion to choose his own assistants. Said Gwesela:

In consultation and with guidance from the Sports and Recreation Commission, coach Norman Mapeza will continue as Head Coach and will guide Warriors to the Cameroon Afcon finals. The coach has been given latitude to come up with his assistants in the interest of teamwork.

ZIFA Re-appoints Mapeza As Warriors Head Coach

Marshal Munetsi has been ruled out of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals due to injury.
Munetsi will be sidelined for 10 weeks and it means he will not be able to recover in time for the tournament which starts in the second week of January 2022.
The Mabvuku-born midfielder sustained the injury on Wednesday when his Stade Reims side beat Lyon in the French premiership.
Munetsi, who lasted only 45 minutes of the match before he was injured, was devastated but vowed to rally behind his compatriots. He said:

It’s a sad feeling, obviously, having prepared and worked hard, to be playing in such big tournaments, and representing my country.
And, it’s also difficult to be missing out on playing for my club, and it’s some sad news for me, as it’s the first time, in my career, l have had such an injury.

Munetsi Ruled Out Of AFCON Due To Injury

FC Platinum coach, Norman Mapeza selected a 40-man squad that has provisionally been registered with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the delayed 2021 AFCON finals.
Mapeza was in charge of the Warriors on an interim basis for the national team’s last four World Cup qualifiers. 
The ZIFA general manager for all national teams, Wellington Mpandare, revealed that the 23-man Warriors squad for the Africa Cup of Nations finals will be selected from the 40-man list.
CAF regulations stipulate that all participating nations have to send their final squads 10 days before their first match.
Zimbabwe open its campaign against Senegal on 10 January and this means that it has until New Year’s Eve to send the squad list to CAF.
Mpandare indicated that they have already sent invitation letters to clubs. He said:

The final 23 squad has to be submitted 10 days before our first game, so it should be by December 31.
The 40 players were selected by Mapeza and his technical team. The final 23 will be selected from these 40.

He however did not disclose the 40 players selected by Mapeza who failed to win a single game during his tenure as the caretaker boss.
The Warriors are in Group B together with west African giants Senegal and Guinea as well as central African minnows Malawi.

Mapeza Names 40-man Provisional Squad For AFCON Finals

The Warriors’ participation in next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals hangs in the balance after the Government-appointed Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) with immediate effect.
Football’s world governing body FIFA disapproves of governmental interference in the running of member associations and has banned countries from all forms of football as a result in the past.
SRC chair <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gerald_Mlotshwa">Gerald Mlotshwa</a>, who is President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son-in-law, said they made the decision following several incidents of gross incompetence on the part of ZIFA contrary to the national interest. Added Mlotshwa:

We are prepared in many respects for whatever might happen.
If FIFA decides to ban Zimbabwean football we are prepared for that. If it does happen we look at it being a short-term measure.
Zimbabwean football needs this opportunity just to fix itself – if we are out of international football for a year, two years, that’s fine.
If we are suspended from AFCON next year we are prepared for that, that is fine, we need to deal with football.

The SRC took similar action in 2019 with Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC), setting up an interim leadership and receiving a three-month suspension from the International Cricket Council (ICC).
The ICC readmitted ZC after the reinstatement of the board.
Meanwhile, the Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board on Tuesday withdrew referees resulting in the abandonment of a number of Castle Lager Premiership Matchday 2 games.
Five games were lined up on Tuesday, and the affected matches include Highlanders vs Ngezi Platinum, Triangle vs Dynamos, Yadah vs ZPC Kariba, and Cranborne Bullets vs Bulawayo Chiefs.
The suspension of the ZIFA Board comes two days after the men’s national team ended their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-1 home draw against Ethiopia.
Zimbabwe finished bottom of Group G, which also included Ghana and South Africa, with two points from six games.

SRC Says It's Okay If Warriors Are Banned From 2021 AFCON

Plymouth Argyle defender Brendan Galloway has the chance over the next week to secure a place in the Warriors squad for the delayed 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals.
Galloway made his debut for Zimbabwe in a 1-0 home defeat by Ghana last month after previously playing for England at age-group levels.
The Warriors are away to South Africa at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Thursday and will then host Ethiopia at the National Sports Stadium on Sunday.
The Warriors will begin their 2021 Africa Cup of Nations campaign against Senegal in Bafoussam on January 10.
They will then play Malawi, at the same venue, four days later before taking on Guinea on Yaounde on January 18.
Speaking to The Plymouth Herald, the defender said it would be an honour to represent Zimbabwe at a huge tournament. He said:

Hopefully, I will be involved. It would be an honour to go and represent them and to get that experience at a major international competition.
If I can continue to play well here (at Argyle) and work hard, then hopefully I will see the rewards of that.

Galloway agreed to a short-term contract with Argyle until January when he signed as a free agent before the start of the season and has gone on to put in a series of consistent performances.
His international debut against Ghana meant he returned to Zimbabwe for the first time since he was six years old and his family moved to the UK.
Speaking on his Warriors debut, Galloway said it was a proud moment for him and his family. He said:

It was a great experience being back home. There is nothing like representing your country so it was a very proud moment for me, and a proud moment for my family. Hopefully, it’s the first of many caps.
It was a lot different over there with the weather conditions and having to adapt to playing with different players who I have not played with before, but I really enjoyed it.
The atmosphere in the Zimbabwean camp is really good, we are all in high spirits.

Brendan Galloway Sets Sights On AFCON Finals

Warriors captain Knowledge Musona believes that they are able to go far at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals if the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) addresses the issue of players’ welfare before the tournament gets underway.
Speaking from his base in Saudi Arabia, Musona told The Sunday Mail that the Warriors’ campaign at the AFCON finals in Egypt in 2019 was derailed by authorities’ failure to give players their allowances. He said:

I think the main issue in Egypt was about money, so I think if everything that has to do with money and all is fixed, we will go far in this tournament.
If you look at all the meetings we were having every now and then in Egypt, it was about money. Is our money paid?
Where is our money? Is our money going to be paid?
Everyone was talking about money, money, money, and not focussing on football, and that’s why we got distracted.
The Al-Ta’ee striker backed the Warriors to finally clear the group stage in Cameroon.
So I think if this issue (player welfare) is fixed, we will go far in this tournament because, for some of us, these are our last tournaments in the national team…
So if that is fixed, I think we will be good to go and compete against the best because we know and we believe in ourselves.

Musona Reveals What ZIFA Must Fix

Hamilton Academical striker David Moyo says he is hopeful of earning a place in Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad but knows that he will have to perform at club level to do so.
Moyo has been named in a handful of squads for the Warriors and has one cap to date and understands his participation at AFCON is by no means guaranteed. He said:

Warriors coach Norman Mapeza has shifted his focus to preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals to be played in Cameroon next year after Zimbabwe’s hope of qualifying for the 2022 World Cup finals ended yesterday.
Zimbabwe goalkeeper Talbert Shumba’s shocking howler gifted Ghana a 1-0 victory at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

Speaking to journalists after the match, Mapeza expressed disappointment over the loss and admitted that qualification for the 2022 World Cup was no longer in the Warriors’ hands. He said:

He, however, refused to blame Shumba for the loss after the South African-based goalkeeper’s blunder gifted a goal to the West Africans. Said Mapeza:

I was a footballer before. I used to make mistakes as well but my coach never dropped me out of the team.
He needs to be encouraged, so, if I am going to drop him because of that mistake, I would be like Judas Iscariot.
This is football, mistakes are bound to happen, it wasn’t his day, he made that mistake but I am proud of what he did, he never looked down.

Mapeza Shifts Focus To AFCON Finals

Former Dynamos and Warriors coach Kalisto Pasuwa says Zimbabwe got the easiest Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw ever and should not have any problems progressing beyond the group stages.
Zimbabwe were on Tuesday drawn in Group B together with Senegal, Guinea and Malawi. The draw was held in the host country, Cameroon.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 16, and the four best third-placed teams from the six pools will also reach the knockout phase.
Pasuwa, who currently coaches Big Bullets in the Malawi Premier League, said:

If you want to compare with the teams that we have been drawn against in our previous participation at the tournament, I think this is the easiest.
</blockquote>
Pasuwa stated that the Warriors have a good chance of progressing beyond the group stages if they overcome their Achilles heel, namely poor preparations. He said:

This is an opportunity for us to make history by progressing to the next stage. If we can go past the group stage, you never know. We can even do much better.
This is a good chance to do well. It is a good draw, but we can’t underrate any opponent in the group. It is those so-called small teams like Malawi that will be tricky.
But everything will depend on the preparations. That has been our main downfall in the past and if we can fix that, then we have a good chance.

Pasuwa led the Warriors to the 2017 AFCON finals in Gabon and Zimbabwe was pooled in a tough group that had Senegal, Tunisia and Algeria.
After producing a gallant performance to hold Algeria to a 2-2 draw in their opening match, Zimbabwe went on to lose 2-0 to Senegal and were eventually beaten 4-2 by Tunisia to crash out of the tournament.
