A 67-year-old retired baker from Hwedza South, Mashonaland East Province, is pursuing Advanced Level studies at Gumbonzvanda High School.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200033500/zims-unlikely-student-high-school-at-67">NewsDay</a>, Helex Njara said he has now obtained nine Ordinary Level subjects, having recently passed his Biology exam.
Njara recounted his challenging upbringing in Malawi during the late 1970s, where it was difficult for him to access education.
As a child, his foster parents could not afford to send him to school, forcing him to drop out after completing Grade Six.
Determined to continue his education, Njara supported himself by taking on various menial jobs, and saving money until he was able to return to school. Said Njara:
<blockquote>
I remember I was doing Grade Six in Malawi when I stopped school. I started doing menial jobs in other people’s homes and managed to save money to go back to school. It worked.
During the holidays, I would travel to Lake Kazuni (Malawi) to buy fish for resale. It also worked and I managed to complete Grade 7.

Njara later relocated back to Zimbabwe, where he enrolled for secondary education at age 27. He said:
<blockquote>
I returned back to Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) and went straight to Wedza, where my father was staying. I wanted to enrol for Form 1, but I was blocked due to my age. I had to go for Form 2 in 1983 at the age of 27.
In 1986, I sat for my O Level examination and only passed Agriculture. The reason for my failure was that I was doubling school and pastoral work.
My father then took me to Wedza High School at Wedza Centre and I passed five subjects. I only failed Mathematics and English.

Njara then moved to Murambinda, where he worked at a bakery and acquired certificates in bakery and confectionery over time. 
However, due to Zimbabwe’s well-documented and prolonged economic challenges, the bakery where Njara was employed eventually closed down, prompting him to return to his home.
Undeterred, Njara seized the opportunity to start his own bakery shop at the Gumbonzvanda Shopping Centre.
Concurrently, Njara attended Biology lessons and sat for the final examination, which he successfully passed. Said Njara:
<blockquote>
My wife would laugh at me, but this did not deter me from attending lessons. The good thing is that Biology has worked so efficiently in our farming life.
For example, our chicken project has boomed due to cross-breeding, part of the knowledge I acquired by attending biology lessons.
</blockquote>
Njara’s deep passion for learning and education is evident in his life choices. He married at the mature age of 34, and he now has three children and three grandchildren.
Driven by his love for books and academic pursuit, Njara is currently enrolled in Advanced Level studies, focusing on the subjects of Biology and Crop Science.
He plans to sit for the public examinations in 2025, further expanding his educational achievements. Said Njara:
<blockquote>
I am doing this at home. I could have enrolled at Gumbonzvanda, but there are some people who called me promising scholarships for me to study Health Sciences at tertiary level.
</blockquote>
A professor at a university in Zambia has offered to provide him with a scholarship, while others have pledged to enrol him in a nursing school.
Njara said he desires to become a nurse or pursue a career in the health field.

He faced challenges growing up in Malawi but saved money to return to school and completed Grade 7. He later enrolled in secondary school in Zimbabwe and worked in a bakery. Despite economic challenges, he started his own bakery and continued his education. He is now studying Biology and Crop Science and plans to sit for public exams in 2025. He hopes to receive a scholarship to study Health Sciences and become a nurse.

The Deputy Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Edgar Moyo said that there is no law that says Advanced Level learners should do a certain number of subjects.
An A’ Level candidate is expected to write three subjects and attain a minimum of two “E’s”, that is, two points in two different subjects to be considered to have passed.
But Moyo said that is just a custom and practice and not based on any law. He said:
<blockquote>
The more subjects you learn the greater conceptualisation of the areas that you will be learning.
For example, if someone is doing Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Statistics, the concepts build into each other and help you in other subjects.
The requirement of two or three A’ Level passes at university is just a custom and practice. There is no law that stipulates that.
It emanated from that a child with three subjects which are related, he/she can find a career.
However, the challenge of doing more subjects might be that there will be more workload for the student especially if they are not really gifted and it also becomes a burden to the parents in terms of financing.

The issue has been topical in recent weeks after a former Ruya Adventist Secondary School student Tadiwanashe Mavetera scored 10As in the November 2022 ZIMSEC A’ Level examination.
Moyo said they have noted the debate and concerns being raised by the public and as the Ministry of Education, they will discuss the matter. He said:
<blockquote>
We have not really sat down to discuss this issue as a Ministry but it is something that we are just noting.
The public has been raising this issue of high grades so at some point we might need to sit down and look at it probably to come up with a policy because policies come up because of what will be obtaining on the ground.
At the moment what I can say is that we are noting the concerns.

Three Subjects At A' Level Is Just Custom, Not Law - Deputy Minister Moyo

“Changamire Dombo —The Legend”, a book written by a Zimbabwean author based in Germany has been adopted into the country’s Advanced Level English Literature set books.
The book is also recommended for every Zimbabwean pupil from primary to tertiary level and for social reading too.
The author of the book, Phillip Gwatidzo, said that “Changamire Dombo — The Legend” takes a person back into the 1600s and makes them feel like they were physically present in the timeline, serving the King’s first hand. He said:
<blockquote>
After the book was published, I met Dr Arthur Makanda, Director of Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and to this day I am inspired by the work ethos and the professionalism the man conducted in the evaluation process.
As a diasporan, social media funnels you to being a skeptic of engaging public office, but I have to commend the level of professionalism I encountered with the Ministry regardless of whether my material had made the cut or not.
The selection of the book is an honour of the highest magnitude, a dream that was followed by hard work to see it come true.
It is a passion project that I am excited to share with the students. As a proud, patriotic Zimbabwean and African, it was always had the desire to get to share what I feel inside for my country and continent with the rest of the world and this book became that platform.

Gwatidzo said he has reached a publishing agreement with Consultus Publishing Services which is the distributor of the book in the country. He added:
<blockquote>
This allows me to focus on phase 2 of the project which is to dramatise the book for screenplay. The intent of phase 2 is to make a global blockbuster of “Changamire Dombo — The Legend” that will screen worldwide.
It is my wish and intent to reach agreements with production companies that will shoot the movie in Zimbabwe, using the original sites such as Great Zimbabwe, Mosi Oa Tunya, Mana Pools, and Gonarezhou.
The majority of the workforce on set to be Zimbabwean, not only showcasing our beautiful country in the process but also creating a workforce during the filming process and an opportunity to showcase local talent to the world.

German-based Zimbabwean Author’s Book Included In A' Level Set Books

ZIMSEC has announced that ZIMSEC examinations will begin on 1 December, the Grade 7s will sit for their exams first and their results will reportedly be published in the same month, The Sunday Mail reports. According to the publication, ordinary and advanced level exams will also start in December but ordinary level exams will spill into January.
The matter came to light when Zimsec Board Chairperson Professor Eddie Mwenje said they were busy crafting the timetable while in an interview with the Sunday Mail:
<blockquote>Examinations will start on December 1, with Grade Seven candidates being the first to sit for the exams,” he said.This will enable their answer scripts to be marked and the results to be published in December so that parents have enough time to look for Form One places.
Advanced Level candidates will also write and complete their examinations in December, while the Ordinary Level classes will be the ones that have their examinations spill into January. Zimsec is now seized with the drafting of the timetables, which will be shared to the stakeholders before they are released to the students.</blockquote>
Mwenje also said printing of Grade 7 exams is complete and ZIMSEC was currently assessing the suitability of centres across the country to hold examinations. About 1.2 million candidates will reportedly sit for their examinations this year.

ZIMSEC Exams To Start On 1 December - ZIMSEC

Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) public relations manager Mrs Nicki Dlamini said that Tonga will be written for the first time as a public examination at Advanced Level in Zimbabwe. Dlamini also said Grade 7 pupils will write Agriculture for the first time at the end of the year.
Said Dlamini:
<blockquote>This will be the first class to write Tonga examination though they are not the first class to learn the language as it has been part of the syllabus. We have already prepared a specimen paper which we give to all pioneer classes so they have an idea of what their final paper will look like. Zimsec would like to assure members of the public that from our end, we have done all the necessary preparations for the assessment of Agriculture at Grade Seven and Tonga at A-Level.</blockquote>
