Rainbow Towers Hotel has reportedly shut its doors to oppositions MP saying it can only accommodate those affiliated with ZANU PF.
The claim was made by Norton legislator Temba Mliswa who said the move forced the postponement of the pre-budget seminar. He said:

Some hotels are no longer accepting Honourable Members to board there. Rainbow Towers now says only ZANU PF members are accepted there. What is that? How can we operate like that?
Our resolution now is to give us the money for food and accommodation and we make our own arrangements.
People can rent houses or make any other provision. It will be better. The fuel we hardly get it.
Information centres were passed in the budget, but nothing has been built. This is an institution that stays beyond the current legislator, yet nothing has been done.
Now we have had to postpone the pre-budget from Monday. That is unacceptable. How do we prepare the budget now?
There is a lot of insincerity and contempt in how MPs are treated yet they deserve respect. We cannot progress with such attitudes.

Hotel Shuts Doors On Opposition, Accepts ZANU PF MPs Only

Members of Parliament are reportedly being turned away from hotels over unpaid bills whenever they come to Harare for Parliament sittings and are now sleeping in brothels.
The matter was raised in Parliament on Tuesday by Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa (Independent). He said:

I think it is also important for you to know that the conditions which the Members of Parliament are facing are rather sad.
Not only that, just decency and dignity — we are fast losing it because of the accommodation crisis.
We have Members of Parliament staying at places like the Harare Club, which is a no-star and a brothel.
I think if there is no means of accommodation; it is good to advise MPs not to come, rather than exposing them to such places.
Others are married and being seen in such places does not augur well. It causes a lot of pain and disharmony in a family.

In response to Mliswa, the Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda said the issue of legislators’ accommodation should be presented to the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube. Said Mudenda:

To that extent, that honour needs to be respected and protected. So as a way forward, we will ensure that by tomorrow when the (Finance) minister is within the country, we iron out some of these issues which not only affect Parliament but have affected all government ministries because they owe the hotels. Some hotels have been owed from six to nine months.
They have been owed for a long time and what they are owed now has been eaten up by inflation. These are the concerns also of the hotels. They also want value for money.
So these are the issues, and we will sort them out. Any challenges are there to be sorted out and get solutions accordingly.
I am sure we should be able to find lasting solutions to that effect. So your point of order Honourable Mliswa is understood in that context.

MPs Sleeping In Brothels After Being Expelled From Hotels Over Unpaid Bills

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has increased accommodation fees from ZWL$71 000 to US$616 or the equivalent in local currency for the 2022 second semester (August to December).
Accommodation fees for the semester that ended on 22 July were equivalent to US$350.
In a notice to students, UZ acting registrar Munyaradzi Madambi said the deadline for the payment of the accommodation fees for next semester is 31 July. Said Madambi:
<blockquote>
Those who have been offered on-campus accommodation for the August-December semester are required to pay the accommodation fees amounting to US$616 or its ZWL interbank rate equivalent at the time of payment.
The university has, therefore, maintained the rate of accommodation fees at US$5,50 per day or its Zimbabwe dollar equivalent for a 112-day semester.
As you are aware, the university has now changed its accommodation allocation policy, giving students the opportunity to apply for accommodation for the subsequent semester at the end of each semester.
Those who do not take up their offers on or before the above-mentioned deadline will have their provisionally allocated rooms revoked and extended to other students on the waiting list.

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) president Benon Ncube bemoaned the accommodation fees hike. He said:
<blockquote>
The accommodation fee hike is not justified because this is a government institution.
US$616 is too much considering that many parents who send their children to universities get paid in local currency.
These fee hikes remain the biggest problem hindering students from completing their studies.
As it stands, rentals off campus are ranging from US$70 to US$150 per head per month.
They have also gone up to the extent that most students would not be able to afford.
