On Friday, 28 March 2025, fifteen people tragically lost their lives in separate road traffic accidents in Norton, Chegutu, and Mutare.
One of the accidents occurred around 4:25 PM on the Harare-Bulawayo Road, when a Nissan Caravan kombi, carrying 20 passengers, veered off the road and overturned. Seven people were killed, and twelve others were injured in the crash.
Another accident, also along the same road, happened just after 5:30 PM and resulted in the deaths of three people.
In Chegutu, two people were killed, and nine others were injured in a separate accident.
Meanwhile, in Mutare, a Volvo haulage truck, carrying three passengers, also veered off the road and overturned, leading to the deaths of three people.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accidents in a statement. It reads:

FATAL ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS IN NORTON, CHEGUTU AND MUTARE
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms four fatal road traffic accidents which occurred in Norton, Chegutu and Mutare, in which 15 people were killed on 28th March 2025.
In one of the road traffic accidents, seven people were killed while 12 others were injured when a Nissan Caravan kombi with 20 passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its left side at the 30 kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road at around 1625 hours.
As a result, three adults and an infant died on the spot while three others succumbed to the injuries upon admission at Norton Hospital.
In another accident which occurred at the 85 kilometre peg along Harare – Bulawayo Road at around 1732 hours, three people were killed while two others were injured when a Chevrolet Trail Blazer vehicle with five passengers on board collided with a Toyota Hilux vehicle with seven passengers on board.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle had allegedly tried to overtake the Toyota Hilux vehicle, which was turning right. S
ubsequently, the Chevrolet Trailblazer vehicle hit the Toyota Hilux vehicle on the right lamp. The Toyota Hilux vehicle overturned before landing on its left side.
Two injured victims were admitted at Chegutu General Hospital.
Meanwhile, two people were killed while nine others were injured when a Toyota Toace truck with eleven passengers on board veered off the road at a curve along Pickstone-Burn Bank Road, Chegutu, at around 1545 hours.
As a result, all the passengers in the loading box were thrown out of the vehicle. The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem, while the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In Mutare, three people were killed when a Volvo haulage truck with three passengers on board veered off the road and overturned before landing on its roof at around 1030 hours along the Harare-Mutare road near the Wise Owl turn-off.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores motorists to observe all road rules and regulations and exercise extreme caution to safeguard lives on the roads.
Drivers should be patient, observant, and avoid speeding and overtaking in situations where it is not safe to do so.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has reported a decline in the overall number of road traffic accidents during the festive season compared to the previous year. However, the rise in fatal crashes has raised concerns regarding road safety.
According to statistics released by the ZRP this week, there were 2,936 road traffic accidents recorded from December 15, 2024, to January 15, 2025, down from 3,607 during the same period last year.
Despite the overall decrease in accidents, fatal incidents increased from 118 in 2023/2024 to 133 in 2024/2025.
While the number of fatalities saw a slight decrease—155 people killed compared to 162 the previous year—the number of injuries rose from 821 to 938 this season. ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said:

In one of the accidents, three people were killed while ten others were injured when an Isuzu KB 250 vehicle with no passengers on board side swiped with a Toyota Probox vehicle with 13 passengers on board on 31st December 2024 at around 20 00 hours at the 136 kilometre peg along Harare -Chirundu Road.
In some of the fatal road traffic accidents recorded during the period, pedestrians were killed during the night while crossing the roads. In some instances, motorists did not stop after the accidents.
On 1st January 2025, a man (23) died on the spot after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident along Khami Road opposite DA Service Station, Bulawayo.
Meanwhile, another man was killed on 1st January 2025 after being hit by an unknown motorist who did not stop after the accident along Magoda Road, opposite OK Supermarket, Pamubhedha, Budiriro 5, Harare.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to exercise extreme caution and prioritize road safety, especially during the night.

ZRP Reports Decline In Accidents But Rise In Fatal Crashes During Festive Season

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released road traffic accident statistics for the period from 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024.
ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Friday that a total of 1,211 road traffic accidents were recorded during this period in 2024, compared to 1,454 accidents recorded in the same period in 2023.
This year, 65 fatal accidents were recorded, while 50 fatal accidents occurred in 2023. From 15th December 2024 to 26th December 2024, 77 people died in road accidents, compared to 71 fatalities during the same period in 2023.
Commissioner Nyathi also revealed that in 2024, 401 people were injured in road traffic accidents, compared to 393 injuries in the same period in 2023.
He noted that some accidents were caused by driver fatigue and negligent conduct, with most incidents involving private vehicles where either drivers or passengers perished.
The ZRP reported only one major road traffic accident involving public service vehicles, which occurred on 22nd December 2024, when three buses collided, resulting in two fatalities. Added Commissioner Nyathi:

On 22nd December 2024, 106 road traffic accidents were recorded where seven people were killed while 38 people were injured.
On 25th December 2024, 104 road traffic accidents were recorded where 13 people were killed while 16 people were injured.
On 26th December 2024, 87 road traffic accidents were recorded where 11 people were killed while 40 people were injured.
Accidents involving pedestrians trying to cross the roads have also been recorded. Drivers are urged to be observant especially when approaching built-up areas or places frequented by the public including residential areas.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that drivers should avoid speeding and overtaking in circumstances that are clearly not safe to do so.
Above all, motorists are implored not to overload vehicles when travelling on the country’s roads.

2024 Festive Season Records More Fatal Accidents And Deaths Compared To 2023

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Tuesday, 17 September, released the names of the victims of two fatal road traffic accidents that occurred in Masvingo and Rusape on 14 September 2024 where seven people were killed.
Police said a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
The names of four victims who were killed in the Masvingo accident are:

<li>Siyano Nyamande (40), a female adult of Crownhill, Borrowdale, Harare</li>
<li>Priscilla Musembwa (64), a female adult of Biddulph, Cranborne, Harare</li>
<li>Memory Kwenda (40), a female adult of Dzivarasekwa, Harare</li>
<li>Epson Nyamande (45), a male adult of Crownhill, Borrowdale, Harare</li>
</ul>
In the Rusape accident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
The accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries.
Two of the three victims who were killed in the Rusape accident were identified by their next of kin as follows:

In a statement, ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi attributed some of these tragic accidents to the use of unfit and unserviced vehicles.
He implored drivers to avoid overtaking in situations that are not safe to do so and urged church leaders to put in place appropriate measures to transport their congregants to curb road traffic accidents during large gatherings.
Commissioner Nyathi said that all vehicles, whether publicly or privately owned, should be regularly serviced, checked, and certified as fit to be on the roads. This, he said, is crucial to prevent such horrific incidents from occurring in the future. Reads the statement:

In the Marondera fatal road traffic accident, five people were killed while three others were injured when a Toyota Iris vehicle carrying seven passengers was involved in a head-on collision with a Freightliner truck with no passengers on board on 12th August 2024 at around 1500 hours on the 53-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road.
Three of the five victims were identified by their next of kin as:

<li>Alice Mavhudzi (46), a female adult of Elmswood Park, Marondera.</li>

The other two victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. The bodies of the victims were taken to Marondera Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.
In the Harare fatal road traffic accident, three people were killed while 32 others were injured when a Toyota Hiace kombi carrying 15 passengers side-swiped with a Mazda Bongo Van with four passengers on board at corner St Patricks and Seke Road on 13th August 2024 at around 0645 hours.
Subsequently, the Toyota Hiace Kombi went on to collide head-on, with a Nissan Caravan Kombi carrying 18 passengers.
The victims were identified by the next of kin as listed:
<ul>
<li>Wayne Chipuriro (42), a male adult of Chipuriro Village, Mutoko.</li>
<li>Pecking Feliati (40), a male adult of Unit I Extension, Seke Chitungwiza.</li>
<li>Christable Makwanya (32), female adult of Unit K Chitungwiza.</li>
</ul>
Two bodies of the victims were taken to Chitungwiza Hospital while the body of the third victim is at Sally Mugabe Hospital for post-mortem. The injured victims were admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital and Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 13th August 2024 at around 2100 hours at the 34-kilometre peg along Nyanga-Rwenya Road at Tangwena Turn off, Nyanga, five people were killed while 60 others were injured when a Hino Dutro Truck carrying 64 church congregates veered off the road.
Subsequently, some passengers were thrown out of the truck and some were dragged for approximately 30 metres. The accident occurred while the truck was descending a steep slope with a sharp curve.
The injured victims are admitted at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, Nyanga District Hospital and Regina Coeli Mission Hospital. The bodies of the victims are awaiting post-mortem at Nyanga District Hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, in another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 12th August 2024, at around 2200 hours along Magadzire-Dazi dust road near Nyagoma Village, Tangwena, Nyanga, a Nissan Caravan kombi carrying 12 passengers overturned resulting in the death of three passengers and injury to five others and the driver.
The vehicle failed to ascend a steep hill and rolled backwards before overturning several times and landing on its wheels.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police implores drivers to avoid overtaking in situations which are not safe to do so. Church leaders are once again reminded to put in place appropriate means to carry congregates to curb road traffic accidents whenever they are having large gatherings.
Above all, vehicles, whether public or privately owned, should be regularly serviced, checked and certified fit to be on the roads.

Deadly Road Crashes In Marondera, Harare, And Nyanga Claim 16 Lives

Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona has said that any vehicle involved in an accident after passing through a manned roadblock would result in the accountability of the police officers and/or Vehicle Inspectorate Department (VID) officials manning the roadblock.
Mhona made this statement in response to a question from Manicaland Senator Jane Chitsamba, who had inquired about the Ministry’s efforts to address the surge in road carnage.
In recent weeks, dozens of people have been killed in several accidents across the country, with some of the accidents attributed to unroadworthy vehicles. Said Mhona (via <a href="https://cite.org.zw/traffic-cops-to-be-held-liable-for-accidents/">CITE</a>):

It is quite saddening that over 26 precious lives were lost in June alone, with over 56 people injured.
We are taking serious measures in terms of mitigatory actions as a Ministry, but this calls for a holistic approach.
Where we have witnessed recklessness, where we did not preserve the sanctity of life on our roads, where others are driving under the influence of alcohol, and through the enforcement agents, we have said if a vehicle passes through a manned checkpoint and is involved in an accident, the officials are accountable.
Not only that, even the operators of those buses. So we are not only charging the drivers.

Mhona revealed that in all reported accidents, the vehicles did not have certificates of fitness, indicating they were unfit for the road. He said:

So we cannot continue to watch. We cannot continue to allow such anarchy and lawlessness on our roads. We are tabling a very deterrent Statutory Instrument (SI) to address such malpractices.
We are witnessing 2,000 lives lost per annum in this small country of Zimbabwe. We cannot continue to have such an alarming number.
I want to assure the august House that we will not rest on our laurels as a Ministry, but will continue to appeal to this august House for deterrent measures.

According to the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), from January to May 2024, the country had a total of 21,183 road crashes, resulting in 860 fatalities and injuring 4,350 people.

The Minister of Transport in Zimbabwe said that if a vehicle gets into an accident after passing through a roadblock, the police officers at the roadblock will be responsible. This decision was made after many accidents in the country where people died. The Minister also mentioned that many accidents happen because vehicles are not safe to be on the road. Police Officers Manning Roadblocks To Be Held Liable For Accidents, Says Minister Of Transport

The government intends to adopt the traffic penalty points system whereby drivers accumulate penalty points on their licence for committing certain traffic offences in a bid to curb road traffic accidents, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/penalty-points-to-curb-traffic-offences/">The Herald</a>.
Under the system, the number of points received depends on the severity of the offence and once a driver accumulates a certain number of points within a set time period, they may face consequences such as licence suspension, revocation or other penalties.
At present those found guilty of the less major traffic offences such as negligent driving resulting in the death of pedestrians simply pay a fine and face no further action.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) managing director, Munesu Munodawafa, said the penalty points system will help persuade drivers to comply with road rules.
Munodawafa was participating in a panel discussion with Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi and Zimbabwe Passenger Transport Organisation (ZPTO) chairperson Samson Nhanhanga last Friday. He said:

Normally if all was well, we would not expect such a system to be put in place. Our statistical analysis shows that about 94 per cent of the accidents in Zimbabwe are attributable to human error, so the Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Development, Mr Felix Mhona, has said let us encourage the human being, perhaps through this measure, to behave in a positive way.

Comm. Nyathi said the system will ensure that careless drivers will suffer the consequences of their negligence. He said:

Nhanhanga concurred with the panel on the implementation of the penalty points system but urged the Government to increase the bus driver’s age limit.
A Penalty Points System encourages safe driving behaviours by penalizing repeat offenders and helps identify high-risk drivers who may need remedial training or license suspension.
It also provides a structured system for administering traffic violations and can reduce accident rates and improve overall road safety.

The Acting Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Chris Mutsvangwa has implored drivers to exercise caution on the roads to curb avoidable accidents during the festive season following the death of 12 people in two separate accidents that occurred on Sunday and Monday.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said on Sunday, around 3 PM, three people were killed when a Sino truck with three passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a DAF truck at the 50-kilometre peg along Mutare Juliasdale Road.
Asst Comm Nyathi said on Monday, nine people were killed whilst three others were injured in a head-on collision involving two Honda Fit vehicles around 2.30 AM at the 43-kilometre peg along Harare-Mukumbura Road.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/govt-urges-caution-after-9-killed-in-head-on-collision/">The Herald</a>, Mutsvangwa urged drivers to exercise caution on the roads. He said:

Mutsvangwa Urges Caution After 12 Killed In Head-on Collisions

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has said a total of 15 people died while 85 were injured in road traffic accidents during the just-ended Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
According to statistics released by ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the total number of fatal road and traffic accidents recorded during the August holidays in 2023 was 132, down from 163 recorded during the same period in 2022.
However, the number of fatalities recorded during the 2023 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays rose threefold compared with the previous year, that is, from 04 to 12.
The total number of people killed during the holidays this year was less than those killed during the same period in 2022, that is 05 and 15, respectively.
29 people were injured during the 2023 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, down from 85 injured during the 2022 August holidays. Said Assist Comm Nyathi:

The recorded statistics show a decrease in the number of accidents recorded from 163 to 132 and an increase in the number of people killed from 5 to 15 and the number of people injured from 29 to 85.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 1530 hours at the 35-kilometre peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road where six (6) people were killed whilst six (6) others were injured.
A Nissan Caravan vehicle with thirteen (13) passengers on board veered off the road to the right and overturned before landing on its wheels.
Three (3) of the six (6) victims were positively identified by their next of kin as listed:-
<ul>
<li>Murenjekwa Tendai (76), a female adult of Silver City, Chivi,</li>
<li>Moyo Gracious (40), a male adult of Muera Village, Shumba, Chivi,</li>
<li>Muzondiwa Leonard (49), a male adult of Southerton, Harare.</li>
</ul>
The other three (3) victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. The bodies of the victims were taken to Masvingo Provincial Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, six (6) people died whilst six (6) others were injured when a Mitsubishi mini-bus with eleven (11) passengers on board was hit on the left side by a Freightliner Columbia truck with one (1) passenger on board at the 158-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road on 28th July 2023 at around 1830 hours.
As a result of the accident, the Mitsubishi mini-bus which was overtaking a convoy of vehicles was dragged by the Freightliner Columbia truck to the right for about forty (40) metres.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Rusape General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 28th July 2023 at around 2000 hours at the 56-kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road, four (4) people were killed when a Honda Fit vehicle with three (3) passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Shacman F 3000 haulage truck with no passengers on board.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Esigodini District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.
On 27th July 2023 at around 1450 hours at the 150-kilometre peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road, two (2) people died whilst one (1) person was injured when a Nissan NP 300 vehicle with two (2) passengers on board veered off the road before hitting a tree.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kotwa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured person is admitted at the same hospital.
Meanwhile, one (1) person was killed whilst eleven (11) others were injured when the left rear tyre of a Nissan Vannette vehicle burst, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road to the right before overturning and landing on its right side at the 30-kilometre peg along Harare -Nyamapanda Road on 27th July 2023 at around 1600 hours. The vehicle had eleven passengers on board.
The body of the victim was taken to Murewa Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured were admitted at Chipfumbi Clinic, Juru.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should be patient on the roads and avoid overtaking when it is not safe to do so. Above all, drivers are urged to be observant and avoid speeding.

Fatal Road Traffic Accidents In Masvingo, Rusape, Esigodini, And Murewa

The Government says it will soon introduce a new law to curb road traffic accidents that have killed hundreds of people so far this year.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona Mhona said that the Government will soon gazette a new Statutory Instrument on measures to curb the road carnage.
He said the law would ensure the right age requirement for bus drivers is met while fixing the maximum speed for buses, among other measures.
Mhona made the remarks in Dotito, Mashonaland Central province last week after visiting the scene of the CAG bus accident that claimed seven lives. He said:

The law will make sure buses that are brought into the country are fixed in a manner that makes sure they do not go above 100km/hr.
We have excitable drivers who are also inexperienced and underage. We will address all this in our new law that is coming soon.

Mhona also announced that the soon-to-be-introduced plastic discs will reduce a massive backlog of driver’s licenses. He said:

It will be acceptable in 27 countries in and out of SADC. There is a code that shows everything about the driver and on the 19th of this month, there will be an official launch of the license. It will also reduce the making of fake driver’s licenses.
We had a backlog of over 600 000 driver’s licenses and this will ensure we bring this to an end. We were having problems with licenses.

Govt Mulls New Law To Curb Road Accidents

Police have released the names of six people who were killed in a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 10 June 2023 in Dotito at the 181-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mukumbura Road.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the six victims have been identified by their next of kin. They are:

Asst Comm Nyathi urged rivers to be safety conscious and regularly check vehicle tyres to ensure that they meet road conditions.
He also implored bus operators to ensure that public service vehicles do not exceed their stipulated load capacity to safeguard lives on the roads.
The accident when a CAG bus travelling towards Harare burst a front tyre resulting in the bus veering off the road to the left before overturning and landing on its right side.

Police have released the names of ten (10) people who died in a fatal road traffic accident on the 7th of April 2023 along Harare -Masvingo Road.
In a statement, ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the victims were positively identified by their next of kin. He said:

The accident occurred when a Toyota Caravan kombi collided with a minibus at around 0600 hours resulting in the death of ten people, while 31 others were injured.

Police Release Names Of 10 People Killed In Accident On 7 April

The number of people killed in road traffic accidents during the 2023 Easter Holiday, that is, from 07 to 10 April, was low compared to the 2022 Easter Holiday.
On Tuesday, 11 April, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi released the 2023 Easter Holiday road traffic accident statistics.
The statistics showed that the total number of road traffic accidents rose to 288 in 2023 from 264 in 2022.
The total number of fatal road accidents fell to 16 during the 2023 Easter Holiday compared to 32 such accidents recorded during the 2022 Easter Holiday.
The number of people killed this year also fell to 30, from 73 recorded during the 2022 Easter Holiday.
The number of injured people also declined from 202 to 153. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

It is disturbing to note that some of the accidents recorded during the period are attributed to human error, which includes speeding, inattention, misjudgment, and failure to observe road rules and regulations, by drivers.
Most fatal road traffic accidents recorded occurred during the night when travellers were moving in numbers with vehicles overloaded, mixing goods and passengers, in the process ignoring safety measures.
On 7th April 2023 at around 0600 hours, ten people were killed, while 31 others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 192 kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Highway when a Toyota Caravan kombi collided with a minibus.
In another fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 09th April 2023, at around 2300 hours at the five kilometre peg along Mvuma -Gweru Road, six people died while five others were injured when a Mercedes Benz Sprinter with 24 passengers on board side swiped with a UD truck carrying 31 passengers.
The truck driver did not stop after the accident and was involved in another accident at the 192-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road where the truck veered off the road resulting in the injury of three passengers who were in the truck.
Meanwhile, two people died while two others were injured when a Honda Fit vehicle with four occupants on board veered off the road and landed beneath the bridge at the 213-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road on 9th April 2023 at around 2300 hours.
As the country prepares to commemorate Independence Day on 18th April 2023, the Zimbabwe Republic Police implores all motorists to be responsible on the roads and lead by example when it comes to road safety.
Let us all play our part to make roads safe and not death traps, above all drivers, should comply with all road rules and regulations in order to safeguard lives.

30 People Killed In Accidents Over The 2023 Easter Holiday

More than 1 800 people die yearly from an estimated 35 000 road accidents recorded in Zimbabwe each year.
This was said by Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona while addressing delegates at the inland Transport Committee Forum for Road Safety High-Level event in Geneva, Switzerland, on Tuesday. Mhona was quoted by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200007836/1-800-die-yearly-from-road-accidents-mhona">NewsDay</a> as saying:

According to available statistics in Zimbabwe, over 35 000 crashes occur annually, an average of at least five people are killed every day and over 1 800 people die every year.
We are currently reviewing our policies and laws with a view to strengthening the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe into a leading road traffic management agency with the powers to enforce road traffic safety management through coordination and robust regulation of the road traffic actors.
</blockquote>
Mhona added that Zimbabwe was committed to cooperating under the United Nations system towards the adoption of international good practices and standards on road safety.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on 23 January 2023 gave an update on road traffic accident statistics for the period 15th December 2022 to 15th January 2023. Here are the statistics:

 Motorists should not cross flooded rivers and bridges to curb drowning incidences.
On the other hand, public service vehicle operators are urged to adhere to speed limits on the country’s roads and stop engaging in highway races while competing for passengers.

ZRP Releases Accident Statistics For The Period 15 December To 15 January

A Masvingo tuckshop owner was shot dead by unknown robbers who also stole an unspecified amount of money on Saturday evening.
In a report seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said the robbers arrived when Michael Munhungowarwa (41) and his wife were closing their tuckshop. Reads the report:

Police in Masvingo are appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of an unknown suspect who shot dead a tuckshop owner, Michael Munhungowarwa (41), with a pistol before stealing unknown amount of cash on 07/01/23 at around 2100 hours along Kaguvi Street, Mucheke B, Masvingo. The suspect pounced at the tuckshop when the victim and his wife, Martha Taguta (26) were packing groceries while preparing to close the shop for the day. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

Accidents:
ZRP reported that two people died on the spot while 13 others were injured on Saturday 07 January 2023 at around 1730 hours at the 117 km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road when a Yutong bus was involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Hilux vehicle.
The Yutong bus which had 17 passengers on board was travelling towards Harare while the Toyota Hilux was travelling in the opposite direction.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Chegutu District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.
In another accident, three people were killed while 12 others were injured when a Toyota Hiace vehicle with 17 passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a Ford Ranger vehicle along Robert Mugabe Way, near Clyde Road, Eastlea, Harare on Saturday at 2015 hours.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured are admitted at the same hospital.

Asst Comm Nyathi implored motorists to be cautious and adhere to road rules as schools open for the first term and companies resume full operations. He said:

As alluded to in the Police press statement issued on 27th December 2022, most Fatal Road Traffic Accidents involved private cars.
The festive period has revealed that drivers need to self-introspect and reconsider the way some are driving on the country’s roads.
The bully and unruly driving conduct shown by some drivers should stop in order to save lives on the roads.
Police reiterate that drivers must be observant and concentrate while on the steering wheel to curtail fatal road traffic accidents which have been recorded during the festive season where in some instances pedestrians were hit while standing at bus stops or walking beside the road.
In one of the fatal road traffic accidents which occurred on 18th December 2022, an unknown motorist hit a man aged between 30 and 35 years along 12th Avenue, Bulawayo at around 0200 hours on 18th December 2022. The victim died on the spot and the motorist did not stop after the accident.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police reiterates that motorists should stop when involved in road traffic accidents, assist the injured if necessary and report all accidents to the Police within 24 hours.
In another accident that occurred on 25th December 2022 at 1945 hours at the 300 km peg along Bulawayo -Victoria Falls Road, a motorist who was driving a Toyota Hilux vehicle with three passengers on board towards Victoria Falls, lost control of the car and veered off the road to the left, where he ran over seven pedestrians before swerving to the right side where he rammed onto a stationary Honda Fit vehicle which had six passengers on board.
The Honda Fit vehicle overturned once and landed on its roof. As a result, three people (two pedestrians and one passenger from the Honda Fit vehicle) died, while 13 others were injured.
Similarly, on 31st December 2022 at 1000 hours, three pedestrians were killed after they were hit by a bus that had veered off the road along Zaka- Nyika Road at the 15 km peg.
As the nation gears up for social and economic activities in the year 2023, the Police implore motorists to be responsible and strive to promote road safety on the country’s roads.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to deploy police officers to curb road carnage and reckless driving conduct on the roads.
The Police need the cooperation of motorists for road safety to be realised in the country.

Police Release Accident Statistics For The Period 15 December To 5 January

Four people were killed in a road traffic accident that occurred at the 180 km peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on Tuesday around 6 AM.
Police said the driver of an Iveco Sprinter vehicle with nine passengers lost control of the vehicle resulting in it veering off the road and hitting a tree thereby killing four of the passengers on the spot.
In another accident, two people died when a road traffic accident involving five vehicles occurred on Tuesday at around 6.30 AM along the Harare-Mutare Road near NOIC Mabvuku, Harare.
In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police Senior Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at the 180 km peg along Masvingo-Beitbridge Road on 6th December 2022 at about 0600 hours.
An IVECO Sprinter vehicle with nine (09) passengers on board which was travelling towards Beitbridge veered off the road to the left before hitting a tree.
As a result of the accident, four (04) passengers died on the spot while six (06) others were injured.
The injured people were referred to Neshuro District Hospital for treatment while the bodies of the victims were conveyed to the same institution for post-mortem.
In another incident, two (02) people died and 12 others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident involving five vehicles which occurred on 06th December 2022 at around 0630 hours along Harare-Mutare Road near NOIC Mabvuku, Harare.
A Toyota Wish vehicle with nine passengers on board which was travelling against the flow of traffic collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla vehicle which had three passengers on board.
As a result of the accident, the Toyota Wish vehicle swerved and collided with an Isuzu FXZ Auto truck.
Subsequently, the trailer of the truck unhooked and hit two vehicles, a Mazda 323 and a Mercedes Benz, which were travelling in the opposite direction.
One passenger who was in the Toyota Wish vehicle died on the spot while the other passenger died upon admission at Pacific Hospital, Mabvuku.

5 People Killed In Harare, Masvingo Accidents - Police

153 people die through road traffic accidents in Zimbabwe every month while the country loses US$406 million per year to traffic crashes, a cabinet minister has said.
Announcing the closure of the Mbudzi roundabout in Harare to pave way for the construction of a more modern traffic interchange intersection at the site, Transport and Infrastructural Development minister Felix Mhona said that the country has recorded 40 180 on average per year between 2010 and 2021. Said Mhona:

In Zimbabwe, the average number of crashes per year between 2010 and 2021 was 40 180 and the average number of people dying as a result of road crashes was 1 858 per year.
Put differently, five people die every day on the roads in Zimbabwe and this translates to 153 persons killed per month.
The country loses about US$406 million annually from an average of forty thousand road traffic crashes every year, and this is estimated to be nearly 3% of GDP.

Mhona added that globally, 1.35 million people are killed annually in road traffic accidents involving cars, buses, trucks, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. He said:

More than half of those killed are pedestrians, motorcyclists, or cyclists.
Currently, cyclists and pedestrians make up 43% of road traffic fatalities in Africa.
As motorcycles have become more popular as a relatively affordable means of transport, motorcycle fatalities are also on the rise.
Crash injuries are estimated to be the eighth leading cause of death globally for all age groups, and the leading cause of death for children and young people.

Five People Killed Every Day On Zimbabwe's Roads - Minister

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has released the statistics on road traffic accidents recorded during the 2022 Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays.
The total number of road traffic accidents, fatalities and injuries fell significantly compared to those recorded during the same period last year.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in total, 102 road traffic accidents were this year compared to 157 recorded during the 2021 Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays.
The total number of fatal road traffic accidents was down to 3 in 2022 from the 11 recorded in 2021.
The total number of people killed in 2022 was 3 while 20 people lost their lives in accidents during the Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays last year.
In 2022, 10 people were injured while in 2021, a total of 24 people were injured according to the report by the police.
Meanwhile, police blamed the accidents on speeding, inattention, misjudgement, reversing and overtaking errors.

On Unity Day, 22nd December 2021, 120 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide of which three (03) were fatal, three (03) people were killed while 16 were injured compared to 112 road traffic accidents with four (04) fatal, five (5) deaths while 67 people were injured in the year 2020.
On Christmas day, 25th December 2021, 91 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide of which 10 were fatal, killing 13 people, injuring 59 compared to 130 road traffic accidents recorded during the same period in 2020 of which three (3) were fatal, with five (5) deaths and 44 people being injured.
On Boxing Day, 26th December 2021, 59 road traffic accidents were recorded countrywide of which 10 were fatal, killing 12 people while 25 were injured.
In 2020, 61 road traffic accidents were recorded which include five (5) fatal which killed five (5) people and injured 45 others.
On 27th December 2021, 60 road traffic accidents were recorded, one being fatal and one person killed whilst 12 people were injured compared to the year 2020 where 58 accidents were recorded, with two (2) being fatal, 17 people killed whilst 43 others injured.
Most of the road traffic accidents occurred on highways as a result of speeding, inattention, misjudgement, following too close and recklessness on the part of drivers.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges drivers to be cautious and promote road safety on the roads this holiday.
We remind drivers that road safety is a collective responsibility that needs the cooperation of all motorists.

FULL TEXT: Police Release Festive Season Accident Statistics

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Republic_Police" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP)</a> has said that 91 people were killed while 414 others were injured in 1 141 road accidents which have so far been recorded during this festive period.
In a statement on Tuesday, National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Nyathi" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Paul Nyathi</a> also revealed that the major causes of these accidents were speeding, reversing errors and inattention. He said:
<blockquote>A total of 1 141 road traffic accidents were recorded during the period extending from December 15 to 29, 2019. Of these, 63 were fatal and claimed 91 lives while 414 were injured.
The major causes of the accidents were speeding, reversing errors, following too close and inattention.</blockquote>
Compared to the same period in 2018, the number of road accidents in 2019 has declined while the total number of deaths has remained the same.
Last year, 1605 road traffic accidents occurred of which 67 of these were fatal compared to 1 141 recorded this year.
In the same period last year, 621 people were injured while 414 were injured this year.

Accidents Claim 91 Lives During The Festive Period

A grade 7 child was hit and killed by a speeding driver in Mbare at Chishawasha grounds yesterday. The driver of a Mercedes Benz lost control, killing the child and injuring 4 other people.
Said one witness:
<blockquote>I was parked on the side of the road and when I was about to start off , I checked my rear view mirror and noticed that there was a speeding car coming behind me.
So I decided to stay put and let it pass. When I was about to check my mirror again, I heard a loud bang at the back of my car. I then saw a boy who had been pushing a cart behind me being dragged for a few metres under the speeding car. When we got to him, he was already dead.
The car then crossed over to the other side of the road and hit about four more people, including two children, resulting in them being seriously injured</blockquote>
The driver is suspected to have accidentally accelerated. The boy who was killed, Kudakwashe Mabhande, had just passed his grade 7 examinations with 8 units.

8 People where burnt to death in a kombi accident. The kombi was coming from Concession and headed to Kanyemba when it was side-swiped by a lorry near the Mutorashanga turnoff.
Acting Mashonaland Central Development Co-ordinator, Mr Cosmas Chiringa confirmed the accident which happened around 7pm.

8 Burnt To Death In Kombi Accident

The driver of the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2019/06/29/ed-declares-featherstone-accident-national-disaster/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Haulage Truck involved in an accident now known as the Featherstone Disaster</a> has been charged with 19 counts of culpable homicide.
From ZBC:
<blockquote>Jeremiah Haisoswi (30) of Epworth appeared before Magistrate Rufaro Panavanhu and was charged with having caused the death of 19 passengers in a commuter omnibus travelling from Murambinda to Harare when the haulage truck he was driving encroached onto the lane of the vehicle, resulting in the accident.
16 people died on the sport, while the other three died on admission at Chivhu hospital.
He was remanded out of custody on free bail to the 16th of this month for trial.</blockquote>

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has released a statement on the Trip Trans Bus that was swept away while trying to cross a flooded bridge. The incident happened on 15 March 2019 before the worst of the floods had started.

INCIDENT INVOLVING A TRIP TRANS BUS IN CHIMANIMANI AND A ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENT INVOLVING A CAG BUS IN KADOMA.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police is urging motorists to be cautious as the nation braces for the impact of cyclone IDAI in some parts of the country.
The Police appeal follows an incident in Chimanimani on 15 March 2019 where a TripTrans bus which had twelve occupants tried to cross a flooded river near Skyline Area and was swept away.
Nine people survived and are currently seeking shelter at a mountain whilst three others, who include two women and the conductor are missing. The bus is yet to be retrieved or located from the river.
Drivers are strongly advised not to cross flooded rivers, bridges or any other water points inorder to safeguard lives. Motorists should ensure vehicle lights, wipers, brakes and other relevant panels are in perfect condition to curtail chances of colliding with other vehicles in the wet conditions.
Meanwhile, Police are also investigating a Road Traffic Accident which occurred at the 134km peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road near Kadoma at 0545 hours this morning where a CAG bus which had 43 occupants veered off the road and overturned.
All of the occupants were injured, with seven of them being referred to Harare whilst the rest were treated at Kadoma General Hospital</blockquote>
