A Mercedes Benz was reduced to a charred shell after a head-on collision with a Honda Fit at the 220-kilometre peg along the Harare-Mutare Road on Tuesday afternoon.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident, saying both vehicles had two passengers on board.

Tragically, three people lost their lives in the accident, while two others sustained injuries. Said Comm. Nyathi:

The three victims were positively identified by their next of kin as follows: Charles Saurombe (31), a male adult of Tsvingwe, Penhalonga, Mutare, Tafadzwa Jemwa (47), a female adult of Zambuko Trust, Harare Desire Tinarwo (31), a male adult of Zambuko Trust, Mutare.

The accident occurred around 4:30 PM when the driver of a Nissan Diesel truck lost control of the vehicle. The truck veered off the road at a curve, resulting in the fatalities and leaving two others injured.
Police have identified the victims as follows:

A 19-year-old man tragically died after being run over by a Toyota Coaster driven by his father near Landa Shops in Ushewekunze, Harare.
Police said the teenager had gone under the vehicle to fix a mechanical fault while the engine was running.
Unfortunately, the vehicle moved and crushed the man’s head. He succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Sally Mugabe Hospital for medical care. Police said:

In a separate incident, Police said eight people were injured when a Stallion Cruise bus with 16 passengers on board was involved in a serious road traffic accident which occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Mutare-Masvingo Road on Saturday.
The bus veered off the road to the left, overturned once and landed on its left side. The injured victims were taken to Mutambara Mission Hospital for treatment.

In another fatal accident which also occurred on October 4, two people were killed while three others were injured when a Toyota Sprinter vehicle with four passengers on board side-swiped with a Nissan UD lorry with one passenger on board at around 07:40 PM at the 35 kilometre peg along Harare -Mukumbura Road.
The bodies of the victims were taken to the Concession Hospital mortuary for post-mortem while the injured were admitted at the same hospital.

Four People Killed In Two Separate Road Accidents On Friday

The five pedestrians killed in Bindura on Saturday when a vehicle veered off the road and struck them were young girls from the same extended family.
In a statement posted on the official ZRP X page on Sunday, 29 September, Police confirmed the accident, saying a Nissan Primera, carrying one passenger, veered off the road and struck six pedestrians who were walking along the roadside before overturning and landing on its roof. Police said:

As a result, three pedestrians died on the spot and two died upon admission at Bindura Hospital. Another pedestrian and a passenger in the Nissan Primeira vehicle were injured and were admitted at Bindura Hospital.

A witness, Mikirina Julius, said the accident happened so fast that she did not realise her young relatives had been killed. She said:

We are deeply touched because all these girls are near the same age and they are coming from one homestead.
They were staying at their uncle’s house, so it’s painful they were all staying at one homestead.

Four of the girls, two aged 14 and two aged 13, died at the scene, while the fifth girl, whose age is unknown, passed away after being admitted to Bindura Hospital.
A sixth child sustained serious head injuries and a fractured right leg and is currently hospitalised at Bindura Hospital.

Two of the three victims who were killed in the Rusape accident were identified by their next of kin as follows:

In a statement issued on Sunday, September 15, ZRP Chief Staff Officer for Press and Public Relations, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the incidents.
In one accident, a Nissan Serena carrying eight occupants veered off the road and overturned after its rear right tyre burst at around 7:25 AM, approximately 60 kilometres along Roy–Chiredzi Road. Four people lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries.
In the second incident, a Toyota Hilux with two passengers was involved in a head-on collision with another Toyota Hilux carrying eight passengers.
Commissioner Nyathi said the second accident occurred at the 60-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road, resulting in three fatalities and seven injuries. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) on Friday confirmed a tragic road traffic accident that occurred on Thursday, September 5, 2024, at around 6:00 AM.
The accident occurred at the 217 km peg along the Harare-Masvingo road.
Police said a UD truck carrying three passengers veered into the lane of an oncoming Freightliner truck, which also had three passengers on board resulting in a head-on collision.
Tragically, three people lost their lives in the accident. Their bodies were transported to Mvuma District Hospital for post-mortem examinations.

In the Masvingo accident which occurred at around 1630 hours, a Chikozho bus which was travelling from Masvingo to Topora along the Masvingo-Zano Road with 105 passengers on board (75 seated and 30 standing) went out of the road while negotiating a steep gradient. The bus then hit a dwala and overturned.
Seven people died while 99 were injured. 65 were treated and discharged for minor injuries at Topora Clinic while 33 who sustained serious injuries were taken to Morgenster Hospital and Masvingo General Hospital for medical attention.
Police officers are currently at the scene.
In the Gokwe accident which occurred at around 1800 hours this evening, a Nissan Sulphy hit a pot hole at the four kilometre peg along Gokwe-Siabuwa Road and in the process had a head on collision with a Nissan AD Van vehicle with nine occupants. Six people died, three from each vehicle.
Eight people were injured, three critically and five sustained moderate injuries.
They were taken to Gokwe General Hospital for medical attention.
The Police will release full details on the two road traffic accidents on 10th August 2024.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on Wednesday, August 7, at around 7:20 PM. The incident took place at the 53-kilometre-peg along the Harare-Mutare highway.
In a statement, ZRP spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, said that a Ford Ranger vehicle carrying two passengers collided head-on with a Honda Fit vehicle transporting five passengers.
The tragic collision resulted in the deaths of five individuals, while four others sustained injuries. The victims were identified as follows:

Five Killed, Four Injured In Head-on Collision On Harare-Mutare Highway

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on 28 July at around 1.30 PM along the Mutare-Masvingo Road at the 134-kilometre peg.
Police said a Mitsubishi Colt vehicle was travelling along the road when its front right tyre suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.
The Mitsubishi Colt then veered off the road and overturned multiple times before eventually landing back on its wheels.
The accident resulted in the tragic deaths of three people who were travelling in the Mitsubishi Colt.
Nine other occupants of the vehicle sustained various injuries and were rushed to the nearby Birchenough Bridge Hospital for medical treatment.
The bodies of the deceased were also transported to the hospital’s mortuary for post-mortem examinations.
In a separate incident on the same day, at around 5:45 AM, a head-on collision occurred along Willowvale Road, opposite the Old Willowvale Flats in Harare.
A Toyota Hiace Kombi, which was carrying several passengers, collided head-on with a Honda Fit vehicle.
The impact of the collision resulted in the death of one individual, while 13 others suffered injuries of varying severity.

In a statement, Police said two pedestrians and the driver of a Nissan Sulphy vehicle were killed when the vehicle veered off the road and struck the pedestrians who were waiting for transport at the Ngwena bus stop.
In addition to the three fatalities, two passengers travelling in the Nissan Sulphy vehicle were injured in the incident.
The bodies of the victims have been transported to the Kwekwe General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination, while the injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at the same hospital.
The accident occurred just a day after two pedestrians were killed, and two others were injured when a Nissan NP200 vehicle, which had no passengers on board, veered off the road and struck the victims who were walking along a footpath approximately 70 metres away from the road.

Police have confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road, at the 103-kilometre peg, on July 25, 2024, at around 7 AM.
Police said two pedestrians were killed, and two others were injured when a Nissan NP200 vehicle, which had no passengers on board, veered off the road and struck the victims who were walking along a footpath approximately 70 metres away from the road.
The bodies of the deceased victims were transported to the Zvishavane District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations, while the injured individuals, as well as the driver of the vehicle, were admitted to the same hospital for medical treatment.
In an unrelated incident, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed a serious road traffic accident which occurred at Bradford Turn-off along Bulawayo Road, Harare on the 20th of July.
12 passengers were injured when a Toyota Hiace Kombi registration number AGB 3305 with 20 passengers on board, veered off the road and landed on its left side.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed a fatal road traffic accident that occurred on July 21, 2024, at around 7:50 PM along the Ngundu-Tanganda Road.
In a statement, the ZRP said the accident occurred at the 70-kilometre peg on the road, where a Toyota Probox vehicle with registration number AFD 7476, carrying nine passengers, veered off the road and rammed into a bridge pillar.
The vehicle overturned several times, throwing all of the passengers out of the vehicle before it landed on its right side.
Tragically, eight of the passengers were killed in the accident, while the remaining two were injured. Police said:

8 Killed In Toyota Probox Accident Along Ngundu-Tanganda Road

The driver of a haulage truck, who on June 25, 2024, jumped a stop sign at the intersection of Masvingo-Mbalabala and Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Roads, resulting in a fatal crash is now facing culpable homicide charges.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/truck-driver-faces-culpable-homicide-charges/">The Herald</a> that investigations were in progress.
According to police, the crash took place on June 25 around 3:30 PM at the 55-kilometre peg on the Masvingo-Mbalalabala Road highway.
A Nissan Note vehicle carrying five passengers collided with a Freightliner truck at the intersection of the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road and the Tokwe-Mhandamhambwe Road.
The truck driver reportedly failed to stop at a stop sign, causing the tragic collision. The ZRP said:

Culpable homicide is a legal term that refers to the unlawful killing of a human being. The term “culpable” implies that the act was committed with some degree of fault or negligence, but falls short of constituting murder.
It encompasses different levels of seriousness depending on the circumstances surrounding the act, such as whether it was intentional, reckless, or negligent.
In April 2024, a police officer, Farai Muchandisiye (37), was fined US$200 by the Norton Magistrates Court following his conviction for culpable homicide.
He was facing two charges: (1) culpable homicide, and (2) failing to report an accident to the Police.
Muchandisiye pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to a fine of US$200 or 2 months imprisonment for count 1.
He was sentenced to a further US$100 fine or 1 month imprisonment for count 2.
Culpable homicide is defined by Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act as the unlawful killing of another person due to negligence or recklessness. The section reads as follows:

Any person who causes the death of another person –
(a) negligently failing to realise that death may result from his or her conduct; or
(b) realising that death may result from his or her conduct and negligently failing to guard 
against that possibility;
shall be guilty of culpable homicide and liable to imprisonment for life or any shorter period or 
a fine up to or exceeding level fourteen or both.

Haulage Truck Driver Faces Culpable Homicide Charges After Fatal Crash

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has urged motorists to avoid overloading vehicles and refrain from mixing goods with passengers when travelling on the country’s roads.
This call comes in the wake of a tragic accident on June 27, 2024, in which a Nissan UD truck carrying 38 passengers veered off the road, overturned, and landed on its roof, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to 26 others.
ZRP spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, stated on Saturday, June 29, that the accident occurred at the 106-kilometre mark along the Karoi-Binga Road at around 7:30 PM on June 27. He said:

Some passengers were thrown out of the loading box while others were trapped under the load.
34 passengers were seated on top of the load which comprised, five tonnes of maize, two grinding meals, assorted groceries and roofing sheets.

Nyathi said the driver of the truck had acted recklessly, and assured that the police will ensure the law takes its full course against such irresponsible drivers as well as the owners of the vehicles involved. He said:

This accident occurred hardly two days after eight Anglican church members were killed in a bus accident at the 26-kilometre peg along Nyabadza-Gandanza Road on Sunday, 16 June 2024 at around 7 PM.
The pilgrims were returning from their Bernard Mzeki shrine in Marondera when the bus caught fire resulting in eight people being burnt beyond recognition while ten others were injured, three of them seriously.

5 Killed, 13 Injured In Head-on Collision Along Harare-Bindura Road

Two people died while nine others were injured in a road traffic accident involving a Nissan Caravan commuter omnibus and a bicycle that occurred at the 80km peg along Kadoma-Sanyati Road on Saturday.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the kombi, with 8 passengers on board, hit a 9-year-old juvenile who was riding a bicycle.
The kombi driver fled the scene and his whereabouts are not known. The ZRP said:

Sanyati Kombi Accident Claims Two Lives

The death toll from the Harare-Mutare Road accident has risen from 4 to 5 after one of the 14 injured victims succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The accident occurred at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura on Thursday, 06 June 2024 at around 12.50 PM.
Police said the accident occurred when a Freightliner truck, which was travelling towards Marondera and occupying the outer lane, turned right onto the inner lane, in front of a Tenda bus which was travelling towards Marondera with 56 passengers on board.
The Tenda Bus, which was about to overtake the haulage truck, hit the trailer of the truck before swerving into the oncoming traffic lane.
As a result, the Tenda Bus collided with a Zhong Tong bus owned by Phils and Pats Bus Services which was travelling towards Harare with 25 passengers on board.
On Saturday, 08 June, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said two of the five victims were identified by their next of kin. They are Jerina Nhapi (38), a female adult of Buhera, and Beatrice Chihabvu (38), a female adult of Rusape Hospital.
Police released the names of the other three victims on Friday. They are Kennedy Ngoshi (40), a male adult of Zengeza, Chitungwiza, Plaxedes Kasambwa (36), a female adult of Nyabadza, Rusape, and Monica Katena (54), a female adult of Kuwadzana Extension, Harare.
Comm. Nyathi said the Freightliner truck driver, Pardon Tichaona Sungai (31) surrendered himself to the Police yesterday, 07 June. He said:

Four people died on the spot when a Ford Ranger vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Honda Fit at the 48km peg along Mutare-Juliasdale Road on Tuesday, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the ZRP said that seven people were injured in the accident and were ferried to Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital where they were admitted. Police said:

Four people were killed in a road traffic accident involving two buses and a haulage truck which occurred along Harare-Mutare Road on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said a Tenda bus collided with a haulage truck and a Phils and Pats bus at the 32-kilometre peg along Harare-Mutare Road near Mutangadura. Reads the statement:

On Zimbabwe’s roads, an average of five people tragically lose their lives every day due to road traffic accidents. This translates to approximately 153 persons killed each month.
According to road safety experts and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ), some of the primary causes of road traffic accidents are vehicle defects, speeding, animals, following too closely, driver fatigue, failure to give way and turning in front of oncoming traffic.

Three People Perish In Honda Fit Accident

The Government has declared the Beatrice road traffic accident which claimed the lives of 16 people on Friday, 26th April 2024, a national disaster.
The declaration was announced on Sunday morning by Transport and Infrastructure Development Minister Felix Mhona during an interview with <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/beatrice-accident-declared-national-disaster/">The Herald</a> at the accident scene. Said Mhona:

We are saddened by this tragic incident. Government has declared this accident a national disaster. We wish the injured a speedy recovery and we also send our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.
</blockquote>
On Saturday, 27 April, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the accident occurred at the 52-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road.
According to him, the accident occurred after an Adolph haulage truck with no passengers on board, which was travelling towards Harare, hit a VW Polo vehicle from behind. The VW polo vehicle was travelling towards Harare with no passengers on board.
The impact forced the haulage truck to veer off the road to the oncoming lane and was involved in a head-on collision with a Mercedes Benz Sprinter which was travelling towards Chivhu with 44 passengers on board.
The passengers were members of Angels Family Apostolic Church who were on their way to Makumumavi Shrine, Chivhu.
15 passengers died on the scene of the accident and one of the 29 injured victims passed away whilst admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital.
By Saturday, Police had identified 11 of the 16 victims of the accident. The names of the 11 deceased persons were listed as follows:

<li>Ezra Jack, a male infant aged 1 year 1 month of 1794 Overspill, Epworth, Harare.</li>
<li>Prudence Mahachi, a female adult aged 31 years 1794 Overspill, Epworth, Harare.</li>
<li>Talent Rangwa, a female aged 23 years of 20278, Overspill, Epworth, Harare.</li>
<li>Leeroy Kido, a male juvenile aged 8 of 20278 Overspill, Epworth, Harare.</li>
<li>Lloyd Kido, a male juvenile aged 4 of 20278 Overspill, Epworth, Harare.</li>
<li>Elmod Ncube, a male adult aged 18 of 20278 Overspill, Epworth Harare.</li>
<li>Decision Maizivei, a male adult aged 26 of Madheu Village, Chief Nyashanu, Buhera.</li>

Beatrice Road Traffic Accident Declared National Disaster

Eleven (11) of the sixteen (16) people who were killed in an accident which occurred near Beatrice along the Harare-Masvingo Highway on Friday have been identified.
In a statement issued this Saturday, 27 April, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the injured victims were admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital, whilst the bodies of the victims were conveyed to Chivhu General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem. He said:

Reference is made to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s post on the X platform released on 26th April 2024 regarding a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 26th April 2024 at the 52-kilometre peg along Harare-Masvingo Road.
The death toll has risen to 16 after one of the 29 injured victims passed on whilst admitted at Chitungwiza Hospital.
Police investigations have established that the accident occurred after an Adolph haulage truck with no passengers on board, which was travelling towards Harare, hit a VW Polo vehicle from behind. The VW polo vehicle was travelling towards Harare with no passengers on board.

Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the remaining five victims are yet to be identified by their next of kin. He added:

Above all, drivers are implored to abide by road rules and regulations to safeguard human lives.

11 Out Of 16 Victims Of Beatrice Kombi Accident Identified

Three people were killed while another person was injured when a Ford Ranger twin cab they were travelling in veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels in Kadoma, the ZRP has said.
In a statement, Police said the accident occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road around 11 AM on Independence Day. The ZRP said:

The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at the 166-kilometre peg along Harare-Bulawayo Road on 18/04/24 at around 1100 hours in which three people were killed whilst one person was injured.
A Ford Ranger twin cab with three passengers on board veered off the road before overturning and landing on its wheels.
The bodies of the victims were taken to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary for post-mortem whilst the injured is admitted at the same hospital.
</blockquote>
An average of five people die on Zimbabwean roads every day through road traffic accidents which happen every 15 minutes.
This was said by the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) Chief Executive Officer, Munesu Munodawafa when he recently appeared before parliament’s portfolio committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development.
He also said on average, 38 people are injured in accidents daily.
